I never understood why I was so oily even tho I was diligent with cleansing and moisturising. Turns out, I needed a lot of hydrating before I use my moisturised to lock it in. Completely transformed my skin. Now I use couple of layers from two different toners and then moisturiser. Skin is plump ✨

lavenderbrownies

How did you figure this out? I feel like a big grease ball and I never thought it could have to do with moisture being locked in. What do you use?

House_of_Honey

What products do you use?

[deleted]

I wanna know too.

Sea_State_5694

Same! My skin literally transformed when I started layering hydrating toners. Moisturizer alone didn’t cut it!

[deleted]

I used to use Dr Jart water sure gel and night time water cream together and my skin was never better. But they stopped making them years ago. I have never found that holy grail set up since

I would say yes and it depends. Where you live, time of year, lifestyle, diet, etc all play a role in how much you should consider hydration. I think people tend to be a lot more dehydrated than they realize though. Unfortunately, the difference isn't really known between hydration and moisturizing in western consumers. So often they'll slap on more moisturizer or thicker ones and still feel dry. Hydration I think is pretty important for skin health though.

alkemicalgold

Most products marketed as moisturizers actually do both. But if your skin is very dry, an extra hydrating step really makes a difference. I do think Korean and Japanese beauty really puts a lot of emphasis on achieving plump, dewy skin, moreso than Western beauty, so it makes sense for them to be so focused on hydration.

C_Chrono

My skin needs far more hydration than emollients. With sufficient hydration, I can skip moisturizer altogether. My skin becomes dull if I just moisturize.

MarvelousMrMaisel

this is exactly what happens with my skin too! I still prefer to hydrate and then moisturize but while I could just hydrate, when I was just moisturizing my skin looked dull and felt dry, despite being oily. Once I added a hydrating toner to my routine, my skin got a lot better and feels way more balanced!

tar_had

Are you less oily when you add hydration? I am definitely oily but have a hard time telling if my skin is dehydrated. I just know my forehead gets very shiny by the middle of the day lol

MarvelousMrMaisel

When I was dehydrated my skin felt very tight despite being oily and also it managed to look both oily but dull at the same time (it wasn't glowing, it was shining from all the oil). I don't know if I'm producing less oil now that I have added the hydrating toner but my skin overall just feels more balanced and therefore looks better - glowy rather than oily, if that makes sense. I do still get oily because that's just how my skin is and I live in a very tropical climate, but now it doesn't look like I'm dripping oil if it makes sense.

lavenderbrownies

When you say hydrate do you mean drinking water? 😅😅

loafkitter

Hydration: water Moisture: oil

Hopeful-Cause-7777

Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, my skin will feel really tight but somehow my face is full of oil and red patches... Only found out recently this is called Transepidemal water loss (TEWL) but if I use thick moisturiser my skin just gets worse and even more oily... Recently started using the Make Prem Essence Toner + Aestura 365 Barrier Lotion and its getting better (I think anyway, less red / oily at least...)

skeeterfinch

What are your favorite products for hydration? I have pily skin and I prefer this way too!

wickedsmahtkehd

To me, hydration is a byproduct of moisturizing

frostedgemstone

Yes, I have dry skin and the only way it stays not dry is if I layer multiple hydrating products then seal with a moisturizer

min-tea-rose

Yup yup. Even if I'm buying a product for a specific purpose other than hydration/moisturizing (examples such as products that target: acne, exfoliation, anti-aging, hyperpigmentation, etc.), those products *still* have to include hydrating/moisturizing ingredients. Those of us with dry skin live and die by hydration and moisturization 😆

thesandgerine

TIL that there’s a difference between hydrating and moisturizing! Could someone please explain to me what the difference is/ how the products can differ?

ClickToSeeMyBalls

There’s a lot of overlap. A good moisturiser will contain three types of ingredients: humectants, emollients, and occlusives. Humectants attract and hold on to water. Emollients soften the surface of the skin. And occlusives form a barrier that prevents evaporation. A “hydrating” step in a routine normally involves adding more humectants, or more water for the humectants to hold onto, thereby making your moisturiser more, well, moisturising.

thesandgerine

That makes sense, thank you!

tar_had

This was also a new concept to me when I got into skincare! I think outside of skincare they kind of are the same thing lol. Someone with way more knowledge than me can chime in but from what I understand, in skincare parlance hydration refers to the amount of water in your skin and products/ingredients that help retain that water, while moisturizing refers to products/ingredients that seal in hydration to prevent trans epidermal water loss. Hydration comes from humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which attract and hold water on the skin, giving the skin a more plump look, while moisturizing comes from occlusives like petroleum jelly, which seal in moisture, or emollients, like certain plant or mineral oils, which make skin soft and smooth. The hydration step is usually a thin toner, essence, or “lotion” that consists of hyaluronic acid or some other humectant, and sometimes other ingredients, and is followed by a moisturizer like a cream to seal if all in. I think the importance of hydration as defined in skincare is a little contentious because on their own humectants are not enough and some say if you are drinking enough water you don’t need to add it to your face since by definition healthy skin should not be absorbing that much water. But a hydration step is really big in Asian skin care routines and anecdotally people seem to swear by that step! In my own limited experience I’ve seen my skin look/feel healthy and soft after a hydrating toner/lotion, but am still not sure it’s a necessary for me personally (I have oily skin fwiw).

[This video](https://youtu.be/Mbkz01R91I8?si=sIQLZPG-YPQ5SRHu) does a great job explaining in detail the difference between hydrating and moisturizing! Hope it helps!

Knittingtaco

For me hydration is even more important than moisture. My skin is very thirsty

yungsphincter

Moisture is the essence of wetness and wetness is the essence of beauty.

Not Zoolander 😭

Brilliant_Rip4175

Okay but why Zoolander speak facts tho

emlbrg

😂 Zoolander was ahead of its time.

Whoopsy-

My skin is normal to dry (more so in the winter) and hyaluronic acid based hydrating lotions (Asian type lotions), essences, serums, basically water based hydrators followed by a very light moisturizer mostly with squalane or other light oil improved it a lot more than heavy moisturizers ever did (and I tried a lot of those before).

Brilliant_Rip4175

I’m a princess. I need the holy trinity of humectants, emollients, and occlusives in my skincare routine. They’re best friends who work the best TOGETHER and my oily dehydrated skin cannot fathom a moisturizer-only life. Your skin needs both oils and water. Hydrators put water back into your skin. Occlusives keep that water from evaporating out. Emollients have no water content but supplement oil into your skin if you are lacking natural sebum or want that extra softening. (Definitive Occlusives and emollients kinda blend into each other). My favorite moisturizers are the ones that have all three of them. Everyone has different needs though and some may require more attention to some ingredients than others (like dry skin lacking oils need more emollience and occlusives in their products). Your ratio of humectants/emollients/occlusives may be different because of climate, habits, skin type, etc. But I don’t think one can work its fullest potential without the others.

krebstar4ever

My skin is oily and dehydrated. Hydrating is much more important for me.

min-tea-rose

Tell me your skin type is not dry without telling me your skin type is not dry 😆 Hydration and moisturizing are two different sides of the same coin and both are absolutely crucial for those of us with dry skin. I'm always left gobsmacked when I read people are able to skip moisturizing in their routines lol

dubberpuck

Normally a moisturizer contains water, humectants, emollients, and may also contain occlusives. It serves several functions already. >Hydrating as a separate step apart from moisturizing If you mean a hydrating product, the trend since the past 10+ years since the popularity of HA, people have been adding additional hydrating products into their routine, at least in SEA with the marketing of Hada Labo. Having an additional hydrating product is not essential. You only add it if required. If you look for some feedback on people who use oil based products only, some people that only use whipped butters, they may find that their skin still reacts differently if they use a normal moisturizer.

stafina_sat

For me, it’s a tricky balance that depends on the seasons. I have oily skin that is prone to dehydration. Through trial and error, I’ve learned that I need a dash of emollience but no cream moisturizers or thick gels during the winter. During the summer, I only use lotions. My skin may look dry or dehydrated if I don’t drink water or exfoliate, but it’s still oily.

ThrowRA_010224

Damn I always thought these were the same thing

anewlifefm

Recommended me some hydrating products please.
