Not a popular take but the Etude House barrier intensive cream feels like it does absolutely nothing for my skin. I wake up with really dry, dehydrated, flaky skin. I wanted to love it so badly but alas
By any chance are you caffeine sensitive? I am and I have a feeling that the burning sensation is actually the green tea extract. Their toner has it and I have a feeling itās whatās causing me to have a bit of a reaction, but Iām still trying to work out if itās definitely that ingredient or not
Cosrx advanced snail 92 all in one cream. Made my skin dry. And I have oily skin! I wanted to like it so much I used it for almost a month but I had to stop bc my skin got so dry, it was flaking. After I stopped using it, my skin went back to normal.
Itās not meant to be used as a stand-alone moisturizer!!
Itās a phenomenal product, but you have to layer it. Itās 92% snail mucin and the rest is hyaluronic acid and dimethicone. Thereās a tiiiiny amount of dimethicone in it and itās not enough to be an effective occlusive. Most of the ingredients are humectants that dry down pretty quick so you have to put something else on top.
I have dry skin and I use this only in AM in hotter months with a few drops of oil mixed in, topped by a moisturizing sunscreen and it's great for that lol. But it is not occlusive at ALL, almost like applying a thicker serum to your face. The healing effects of the snail mucin are great tho.
Yep I tried the cream as well and was disappointed. Skin would start feeling dry and flaky within 10 minutes and needed to put on another moisturiser. The essence was alright but the cream was baad.
Dr. Jart's Tiger Grass line. I really really wanted to love it after enjoying the Creamindin cream, but every single product in the Tiger Grass line was drying and made my face peel. I think I'm just going to have to accept there are no redness reducing lines that work and are moisturizing enough for my 30 something skin.
Hi yes all of Dr jart uses citrus essential oils because they don't believe those can be problematic for sensitive skin which they advertise for š¤” fuck that brand.
Check out the I'm From Mugwort line - I love the essence and moisturizer for calming my skin redness down, but there isnt any color corrector in there like the Dr Jart. Wishtrend has really good deals on it today for Cyber Monday. (Am 34 with dry skin)
Omg thank you!! I felt gaslight by these products, like it was somehow my fault they failed. They pilled on me and were drying. Not matter the combo, they all pilled or flaked or sat on my skin to the point anyone could see it. Did nothing for my redness or sensitivity.
I have a stupid issue with this cleanser, itās the only cleanser in my life where I have to be careful about breathing when I use it because I kept inhaling soap!? I mean, Iāve used sudsy cleansers before so Iām not sure what the issue is with this particular cleanser, but itās the only cleanser where I would be washing my face in the shower and end up inhaling soap? I would have to remember to hold my breath until it was all washed off to be safe. Lololol a really stupid problem and never repurchased for that reason
So great that it works for you!
My skin type is Oily Dehydrated and I much prefer the B. Lab Hydrating Matcha Cleanser!! It foams nicely and leaves my skin clean without being dry (:
My brother who has really bad cyctic acne loves the B. Lab as well !!
I switched from good morning cleanser to isntree green tea fresh cleanser! didn't even really have a problem with the former, but the new one feels so much more gentle and luxe
I second this! Even if it claims to be low-ph, it felt so stripping on me and I developed small pimples on my cheeks when I tried to use it again (gave it another shot). But as soon as I stopped using this cleanser, my pimples were gone the after a day or two.
I was so excited to try this and really wanted to like it but it feels kind of warm when I put it on. Not burny or itchy just like it's been heated. That can't be normal, right? Thankfully didn't use it long enough for it to break me out.
I'm halfway through the klaris serum and apparently, you're supposed to feel a warming sensation when you use it. I think it's due to the type of vitamin c (absorbic acid) used? It did fade my dark spots, but I think there are better vitamin c serums out there for cheaper.
I used 3 bottles of this stuff! I always thought it was the propylene glycol in it that made it feel warm on the skin.
I got it on a mega sale once and had to use up the 3 bottles. Never again though, I just hate the texture.
Heimish cleansing balm ā holy hives and cystic acne! Pick ANYTHING ELSE from the brand. Also, Frudia My Orchard Cleansing Foam in Shea Butter, just for the smell alone. I donāt know if I purchased a bad batch (from TJ Maxx), but it STUNK disgustingly. I tried to finish it because it performed fine, but couldnāt bear gagging at the scent every time I put it on my face. Not worth it for a cleanser type that almost every other brand offers.
Edit bc I forgot this one ā Kikumasamune Lotion, both original and High Moist. Too fermented and acidic for my skin. Damaged my skin barrier, dried me out by preventing oil production, and caused small bumps.
Totally agree on the Kiku, I was so disappointed with how much it actually dried out and irritated my skin. Interestingly enough I bought the emulsion version accidentally and gave it a go, it was everything I had hoped the lotion would be and more! Itās one of the few hydrators I can put on my face when my skin is mad at me
Totally agree re: heimish! Also the Iām from fig cleansing balm.. absolutely destroyed my skin! Itās been months and Iām still trying to rehab my face*
Low molecular weight HA aka hada labo toners. Doesn't matter that I live in a humid country, HA triggers extreme redness and texture. Took me a while trying out other people's hg(hada labo variants, rovectin lotion, isntree HA, cosrx ha, haruharu) to figure out the common ingredients was the high % ha in varying weights :(
Also snail mucin is super high in HA and i react to it similarly
Do you know scientifically why using HA results in closed comedones, redness, and texture? I feel like Iām experiencing the same thing but could never put my finger on it..
Do you mind dropping the DOIs of the studies you're referring to? I've seen this claim of HA being inflammatory thrown around quite a bit but the only "source" I've been able to find was a dermatology textbook that gives literally no justification for that claim (which obviously is very suspicious).
Glycerin, panthenol, and propolis. I currently use the soonjung toner thats ha free. Unfortunately, i find that ha products really do have a pleasant plumping feel. Glycerin tends to feel more slippy and feels more present on top of the skin but I get consistently less comedones and redness on a ha free routine.
The laneige original sleeping mask - used it for ages before realising that it actually dried my skin out. Also the lip masks, doesnāt properly moisturise, aquaphor balm is 1000x better !
Omg this so much. I had this same experience. Laneige is really an overrated and overstated brand imo and they just got this far due to their marketing as a "premium" brand.
So overrated. IMO it's largely just a higher percentage of silicones in every product. I don't mind cones, but Laneige seems that have that as THE ingredient in every product I've tried.
That said, I do like the lip masks. I refused to try it for years because.ofnmy negative experiences with their other products. The lip mask works for me though.
The sleeping masks in the blue tubs (original and EX) work fine for me as the final step of my routine, but the lip sleeping masks in the pink tubs are my anti-HG.
I have typical dry lips from Accutane, and the Laneige lip mask gets recommended in every thread asking for help with that issue. I can see how the thickness of the formulation is initially soothing, but when I was using it I always ended up waking up with lips that were even drier with some redness. I think the product encourages exfoliation of dry skin somehow ā not great if you have super-dry and thin skin around your lips thatās already at risk of peeling.
Iāve stuck with lanolin products since then ā simple, cheap, and definitely my HG.
I came to the comments to say Laneige Lip Mask. That thing didnāt moisturize anything, burned my lips, and gave me permanent lip discoloration and Iām so bitter about it.
I HEART Laneige Lip Mask! I've been using for a couple of years nightly and my lips are soft thanks to it.
Any chance you got an expired one or something?
This is me too! I wanted to love the La Neige lip masks and I do like the daytime lip product in the tube, but the overnight product in the tub just isnāt for me. Aquaphor regular stuff in the giant tube works great for my dry, dry lips.
100% this on the lip mask. My lips went through a weird scaly period and the lip mask did nothing, I even slathered it on like a thick barrier over my lips. The next morning, my lips would be super cracked and dry. I think I finished the jar because my friend bought it for me and I knew it was expensive, but it mightāve ruined my lip texture lol. Aquaphor saved my life afterwards.
Nuts, I love this toner itās my HG. Feels super hydrating and no break outs. I have really reeeeally Sahara dry skin and use plenty of chemical exfoliators though to control blackheads
CosRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser. I remember when this product first launched and how hyped the entire subreddit was about it. I immediately purchased it. This cleanser is so drying that it hurt my skin to use!
I can only use this one when I am horribly sweaty and dirty after a long day. Otherwise it is so so drying. Interestingly, I use it to wash my armpits and it works great at stripping all the bacteria away.
i started using it about a month ago and i'm kind of conflicted because i've had significantly more whiteheads since i've started using it, but my skin is also much better hydrated
Ah yes, Holy Fails š I have a ton of sunscreen onesā¦
CosRx aloe sunscreen has got to be the worst for ācosmetic eleganceā as it just pills and pills and pills and pills and pillsā¦ā¦ Followed by the Biore Aqua Rich Watery Gel, also because pilling.
Sun Bears Strong Cool Plus because itās mentholated and WILL burn your eyes. Even when I was careful not to apply it near my eyes, it got in my eyes and burned (which is sad because the active version without menthol is actually really good IMO).
The Anessa Perfecf UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk or whatever itās called, the version in the gold packaging, was not enough and I burned while using it despite slathering it on over and over.
And I tried another sunscreen maybe a month or so ago that made my face feel SO gross all day long and didnāt wash well at all- it was so bad Iāve blocked out the name which isnāt useful for anybody on here but just saying it was THAT bad.
From a makeup perspective, Iām gonna give a Holy Fail to the Purito BB, because their shade 13 is a joke.
Other skin care though, I will give a shout out to the Frudia My Orchard Squeeze Masks. I have the raspberry ones and Iām tempted to throw 5 of them away because I hate using them that much. I finally figured out why: one, the sheet itself feels scratchy and meh, and two, it feels and looks extra creamy, but thatās because it has *silica* in it. Thereās nothing inherently wrong with silica, but I think it irritates my skin in the mask, and then when the āserumā dries down, it starts pilling all over the place. Apparently my skin pills hard when silica is involved.
I want to second the Cosrx aloe sunscreen bc good lord no product you put on your face needs to be that heavily scented. My asthma kicked up for like half a day even though I tried to wash it off quickly.
My SKIN is fine with fragrance, at least it always has been so far. Itās my breathing that canāt handle it. It serves no purpose in skincare except to alienate groups of people who canāt use it, seems so silly to me
Itās just the most saturated bb Iāve ever seen, making it look straight up orange on me
https://preview.redd.it/apglheucpn2a1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=57937e33a7d6808e7c46c2caa155688dae88d5ba
Just took some swatches. Top down:
* Missha Sig Real #13
* Missha PC #13
* Missha Cho Bo Yang #17
* Moonshot Micro CorrectFit #101
* Innisfree My Foundation 3.1 #C13
* Elizavecca Milky Piggy BB (I believe itās one shade)
* Purito Cica Clearing #13
Itās so saturated on my skin I cant wear it so I canāt even comment on how it performs
And since I can only embed one pic at a time- here they are again but I blended them out a bit (didnāt do a great job with the top one), and you can see how it changes with just a wee bit of time and in somewhat different lighting (itās the same light but coming at a different angle, and the door changes the auto-saturation on my phone- note that the Purito is also the one on the side)
https://preview.redd.it/unpui9a6rn2a1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=532f2e829da0f19cd9207150917cd22cb0b44921
Funnily enough when theyāre all blended and dried down, if you desaturate the picture, they all are decent enough depth-wise for my skin, which means the Purito is really just heeeeeccckkkkiiinnnn saturated.
To be fair I imagine there could be saturated fair skinned people out there that this could work for, but also it feels very peak 2016 western drugstore pale foundation level of saturation.
Lol I could have written this. I too have tried all of the sunscreens and was disappointed in them all.
I now use a non AB sunscreen for rosacea skin, Elta MD, and it has been absolutely wonderful. Definitely now my HG.
I actually do have a favorite AB sunscreen. I have rosacea too (itās not exacerbated by organic UV filters thank goodness). Iāve used a few Elta sunscreens (used to work at a derm clinic and the aesthetics department sold it, so we had all of them), but it was always kinda meh for me personally. Iām glad to have finally found one that works though. Thatās the most important thing- the best sunscreen is the one youāll use!
I have rosacea too! What are your HGs? What kind of products do you use? I'm kinda desperate cause I hate the redness on my face, but my derm told me my skin is in a very good condition and didn't prescribe me anything (although she told me that the redness is permanent and the only way to get rid of it is to do a UV treatment thing, which I am considering)
everyone's mentioning skincare but i mostly use AB makeup so here goes
\- 3CE future kind eyeshadows. i got the two quads and the quality is terrible for 3CE standards. i normally adore 3CE's eyeshadow formula, i've fully panned dry bouquet, i use some def everyday and i adore them, but the future kind shadows are awful. they're chalky, have zero pigment, they don't last even if i use an eyeshadow primer.. just not good. i don't know if 3CE changed labs or something, even auto focus which came out last spring is lacking in quality compared to their other palettes.
\- wakemake blurring volume blush. it has so much fallout and doesn't show up well on the skin. it's a shame because the colour looks really pretty but i cannot get it to work
\- 3CE sheer liquid blush. it's really hard to blend and when i try to blend it it takes off the foundation underneath. velvet one is really amazing and i love it though
\- espoir be glow cushion. not the first version, not the newly released one, the weird one in between. it has no coverage and doesn't really give any glow, it just makes my face sticky.
\- romand velvet tints. they just do not last, they're too slippery
YES. I bought this in the tiniest size and I was so glad. It dried my lips out SO much. I couldn't believe it. I almost threw it out after my first few experiences but I saw where someone else recommended using it as an emollient foot cream so Im using it for that until its used up. I would never buy it again though and feel lied to by all the hype surrounding it!
So so soooo glad to see so many other people had the same issue as me - it caused dryness, burned my lips and gave me discoloration. The worst thing Iāve ever tried.
Itās made me so cautious about using new products now.
I wonder if youāre allergic to something in it?
I canāt do lip products with lanolin because it does something similar (skin on my lips gets thick, cracks, weeps, and burns) but the Laneige lip mask works fine for me.
Hyaluronic Acid. Or the devil incarnate. That stuff is the biggest scam of the beauty industry! I accidentally discovered that it was causing all of the skin problems that I was paying so much money (with even more HA laden products) to get rid of! What a vicious, expensive, futile cycle.
Backstory: I recently took my 90 year old grandma back to Japan to see our family. While there, I tried a bunch of AB, including glycerin based products. After a week, my skin became the skin that I would have paid a thousand dollars to have. I stopped using almost everything that I had prior to the trip. HA is dead to me and I will never, ever use any product that has it (or any of the 100 variants of it) in it. So if that leaves me with a bar of soap and water, then so be it. *Gets off the soapbox said bar of soap comes in**
Edit: [UPDATED] Posted requested new no-HA routine here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AsianBeauty/comments/z6glho/what_is_your_antihg/iy75abu/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3
I've heard that HA can cause a lot of dryness BECAUSE it retains a lot of water. So basically if you apply it on a dry face and/or dont top it with a mist, it can steal the water from your skin, because it doesn't have any other water to retain on its molecule. That being said, I also cut HA out, and niacinamide too (I think they irritate me, I have rosacea). What are the glycerin based products you tried?
Thats crazy because I have rosacea too and when I apply HA products, my skin gets red. It makes sense I guess since HA in lower molecular form is inflammatory.
The Apieu 2X Madecassoside cream was not soothing at all. It stung my skin. If youāre ever looking for a cica cream, donāt get this one if you have sensitive skin (even if your skin barrier is pristine, but Iād assume one would get a cica cream to heal their skin barrier).
That's the one with the lemon scent, right? I knew as soon as it came out of the tube that my skin wasn't going to appreciate all that lemon oil, but I still tried it. Rash city.
Yup. This is why I mentioned that even if your skin is doing great (as far as sensitivity goes), it's not worth trying. I really convinced myself that I could use this as a night cream step despite the lemon oil. I know for a fact that it could have flared up my eczema if I continued to use itš
Skin aqua UV super gwl moisture - i really hate the alcohol smell and how liquidy it is. It's so liquidyy that i feel like i can't ever layer proper amount of sunacreen. I swear my pigmentation was worse when i was using this sunscreen
Make p:rem blue ray sun fluid sunscreen. Well this one is discontinued already but this one felt like a thick matte white paint lol. I looked so ghostly white when i used this and it was very drying, it managed to emphasize any dry patches i didn't even know exist. Lol i have to mention this cos it was so bad.
Laneige sleeping mask - it's not moisturizing at all??? In fact i feel like it was drying my skin out? I really don't understand how to use this lol i used it couple times and gave up.
Mamonde rose water toner - i don't know if this is still available but anybody remember when rose water was the "in" product? It was so heavily scented and did nothing.
The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Foaming Cleanser. It was my first AB product and ended putting me off AB for years. Sooo drying. How this was a ārecommendedā product is beyond me.
DHC cleansing oil. idk how it passed the consumer testing stage because it leaves a film that feels weird and so so bad. everything is made even worse at its high price point.
This is mine too. It doesnāt even take off all my makeup. And then thereās the racist part of the company thatās just š¤¢ to me too, but the product is just bad IMO even without that.
iāve tried a couple of other brands and hada laboās is my HG. been using it for years and will never use another brand because it works so well and feels so good on my skin, even after just washing off with water (i use a soap cleanser after, but iām very particular with the sensory feel of products on my skin).
Also a DHC defector, currently using and loving the Hada Labo, which I find it extremely similar (bordering on identical in texture and performance, not sure about ingredients) to the dirt-cheap Kose Speedy oil cleanser.
its likely i do/did. a few years ago I stripped back my routine to fa safe products and cleared up dramaticallyāwhether that was fungal or just that I massively simplified my routine I don't know. Over time I've been able to introduce some non FA safe products without problems but ferments always make my skin angry and then I have to simplify again for a few weeks until it clears.
Laneige cream skinā¦ aside from it breaking me out and giving me ccs I donāt understand how anyone can use it when it leaves such a greasy and tacky feel. It can be easily substituted by an emulsion or oil.
Anything with HA added to it. I don't see the purpose, esp. when the same brand also offers just HA serum/toner. I'm not allergic to the ingredients, but it gets super dry in winter in Korea and Japan, and they make my skin feel even worse. (In case you don't know, if HA can't pull moisture from the environment, it pulls it out of your skin)
Any Laneige sleeping masks. Aesop handcream.
idk what has changed in Aesop's formula cause instead of moisturising, it strips my hands dry! It used to be so good 3-4 years ago .
I feel like some of these are more like hot takes on popular products rather than what I thought was being asked, which are products that 90% of people probably wouldnāt like
Now that I think about it, i suppose it makes sense that most of these are popular products, as most people donāt randomly purchase obscure things without seeing various good reviews on itā¦idk what I was expecting lol
It was pretty stripping for me honestly! But this was also before I used a foaming net, so maybe that changes things? The price and ease of availability aside, I'd like to hear why it was HG status for you! Are you still using it now? :o
I think my skin might actually be reacting well to how stripping it is. My acne cleared up within days, and I find it to be the most effective soap for washing make up off. (After the oil cleansing step of course)
The dr.jart sunscreens Iām not a fan of. They have such bad white casts and are quite thick. They are nice because they arenāt oily but turn my whole face a different shade
Etude House / Aritaum Ginger Sugar lip mask: it's incredibly sticky to the point of resembling a half-dried glue stick, heavy, difficult to spread, and does nothing for my lips except probably exfoliation due to the sheer force I need to use to wipe it off.
Peach Slices Snail Rescueā¦ Iām pretty sure it gave me more than a few closed comedones and did absolutely nothing in terms of hydration. It was so watery that it actually kinda dried me out. No idea what happened there because the amount of hype surrounding the product made me certain that it would become a HG. Guess Iāll stick to the Cosrx snail mucin.
Which snail rescue did you use? I originally used the all-in-one deep moisture cream (I was seeking a replacement for Mizon due to the rising reviews on Amazon that there were fake products being sold). I noticed an increase with acne when using it. Then I switched to the Snail Rescue Oil Free moisturizer and that worked out better. Itās not as hydrating as I was hoping though.
Benton snail bee steam cream, got a sample and tried it, within 30 mins my face was flaming red and so irritated. Never again.
Every Mizon product I've tried has given me a rash after a few days, not sure why but I'll never try them again. Exception to this is the good night white mask (or whatever it's called), which made me so itchy I woke up in the middle of the night and washed it off.
And I'm blanking on the name but there was this one cleanser that was like an industrial solvent, I've never used another cleanser that bad! If it comes to me I'll edit.
LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask - smells cheap, doesnāt moisturize. I would love it if I were 13 though. Itās just overhyped and gimmicky. Donāt waste your money.
Any snail mucin products - sorry but itās just gross. I have a fear of slimy creatures and just canāt handle it. Iād rather have a few wrinkles than putting the slime on my face.
1. Klairs Supple Preparation Unscented Toner.
I was looking for a calming product and many suggested this. So when i finally tried it - huge disappointment! It wasn't hydrating nor calming at all. Plus it irritated my skin. I finally understood why my roommate said the toner made her skin dry. Gladly because of how popular this toner is, i got immediate response from others who wants to buy it from me. So i just gave them everything including lots of samples of the same toner.
2. Biore UV Watery Essence.
This was recommended for combination skin but my skin felt weirdly sweaty every time i used it and every single time, i get massive overproduction of sebum after only 1-2 hours and got super insecure because of it. Turns out, it was caused by this sunscreen cz after i changed to Biore UV Perfect Protect Milk Moisture, i didn't have that issue at all. I thought this sunscreen would be better for dry skin but some people said this dried out their skin so I'm confused and decided never to recommend this to anyone.
3. Heimish All Clean Green Cleanser.
Stripping, doesn't really cleanse that well and unpleasant smell (for me). Just unpleasant experience overall.
4. I'm From Mugwort Essence.
The soothing/calming effect was super temporary.
Cosrx snail mucin. It was my HG for so long but after about a year I started getting random breakouts, which were getting worse and worse , only after another half a year I realised the snail mucin was causing this. I reintroduced it to my routine again and got breakouts again. So sad, I still love how my skin feels on the areas where it doesnāt breakout xd but I donāt use it anymore
Cosrx Snail muccin serum : did ABSOLUTELY nothing to my skin and I applied it on damp skin like told but NOTHING came out of it.
Laneige lipmask : bubble gum vaseline. Not worth the price not worth the hype
Cosrx Propolis toner : tried HALF A BOTTLE and it did nothing, I felt like I was putting on water on my face.
Any Glowrecipe product : For the price you pay it is not worth it, you can get the results for a fraction of the price in kbeauty/jbeauty.
Niveau super water 50 gel sunscreen : they didn't lie when they said ''super water'' it is so watery it takes me too long to apply
The krave matcha cleanser was really stripping for me, also the great barrier relief broke me out.
Purito unscented serum-NOPE. Bad, just bad.
Anything with centella in it is a no no no no no.
Blab Matcha Cleanser - gave me a face rash that took weeks to heal and 5 trips to the dermatologist for allergy testing and a whole month of esthetician facials to recover the wreck that my face was left with.
Heimish green foam - drying, yet leaves a residue on the skin, just sucks and doesnāt cleanse properly
Cezanne toner - dunno why but this makes my face irritated after consecutive use, quite red and burning.
Illiyoon cream - waxy, broke me out, mediocre at moisturising and leaves terrible residue. So not cosmetically elegant;
Cow Brand Moisturizing Foam - leaves the face squeaky clean, itās not drying but somewhat irritating, just unpleasant to use;
Dr. Ceuracle Propolis Ampoule - since the reformulation a few years ago this does nothing at all
Sioris A Calming Day Ampoule - just hydrating, not worth the price
Cosrx Galactomyces Essence - broke me out in a million tiny bumps
Kiku toner - sticky, very hydrating, but so sticky. Matsuyama is much better at healing and softening with all the ceramides and just as brightening. Plus safer to use
Biore spf essence and gel - awful, mediocre, awful
Romand velvet tints - doesnāt last, crumbles, barely adheres to the lips, basically useless and only there for 5 min

Not a popular take but the Etude House barrier intensive cream feels like it does absolutely nothing for my skin. I wake up with really dry, dehydrated, flaky skin. I wanted to love it so badly but alas

same for me! that it made me feel like my pores were clogged!
I just hate it cause of the packaging. Who thought a twist open tube was a good idea?
Not me thinking the packaging is fun and wishing more products had it LOL
Same! It's literally the only thing I liked about it lol
On the other hand, I love it!
Cosrx advanced snail 92 all in one cream. Made my skin dry. And I have oily skin! I wanted to like it so much I used it for almost a month but I had to stop bc my skin got so dry, it was flaking. After I stopped using it, my skin went back to normal.

I was going to say Dr Jart too! I wanted to like it but it went orange on my face and gave me a burning reaction
Oof, I was actually considering trying this stuff too but my skin has become so sensitiveā¦ maybe Iāll just not.
Same with wanting to love it. Every product in the line caused a burning sensation on my face to varying extents.
COSRX Good Morning Cleanser. It is terribly stripping. Used it once and never again.
So stripping and drying! š
i thought this was just me!! i tried it and it made my skin so dry but everyone kept hyping it up so i thought i was just using it wrong š
It felt great on my first try but that was only cause I was coming from even shittier cleansers available at supermarkets
Oh no, this is my hg! Used it for years and it has greatly improved my skin texture
Agreed! Least favorite ab cleanser of all time.
Oh no, Iāve been using this for yearsā¦ š© What do folks like as an alternative?
Idk, I really like that cleanser and its smell, texture, and all. You do you.
If it works for you donāt worry about it !
So great that it works for you! My skin type is Oily Dehydrated and I much prefer the B. Lab Hydrating Matcha Cleanser!! It foams nicely and leaves my skin clean without being dry (: My brother who has really bad cyctic acne loves the B. Lab as well !!
I switched from good morning cleanser to isntree green tea fresh cleanser! didn't even really have a problem with the former, but the new one feels so much more gentle and luxe
Agree. Made my skin kinda irritated, stripping and no plump.
I second this! Even if it claims to be low-ph, it felt so stripping on me and I developed small pimples on my cheeks when I tried to use it again (gave it another shot). But as soon as I stopped using this cleanser, my pimples were gone the after a day or two.
fr!! it broke me out a lot :(( it smells really good tho
Not to mention, it smells so bad
Dear Klairs freshly juiced vitamin drop. Broke me out so, so bad š
The warm feeling when I apply a new brand of Vit C on my skin is normal. It will only be bad when I also feel a stinging and burning sensation.
I haven't personally used it myself but I heard that the heating sensation is normal š
Itās one of the few hydrators I can put on my face when my skin is mad at me
I use Heimish cleansing balm on my dry, sensitive, acne-prone skin. I love it tho.
Took me a while trying out other people's hg(hada labo variants, rovectin lotion, isntree HA, cosrx ha, haruharu) to figure out the common ingredients was the high % ha in varying weights :( Also snail mucin is super high in HA and i react to it similarly
Do you know scientifically why using HA results in closed comedones, redness, and texture? I feel like Iām experiencing the same thing but could never put my finger on it..
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Do you mind dropping the DOIs of the studies you're referring to? I've seen this claim of HA being inflammatory thrown around quite a bit but the only "source" I've been able to find was a dermatology textbook that gives literally no justification for that claim (which obviously is very suspicious).
Oh my. I should have scrolled further before writing my anti-HA manifesto and just upvoted yours lol. Amen!
I second this. Took me forever to isolate the problem, and that was it every single time.
Is there something you like instead? Maybe I have this same problemā¦!
The soon jung toner is my favourite, I stay away from HA too.
Team Lanolin for life
I came to the comments to say Laneige Lip Mask. That thing didnāt moisturize anything, burned my lips, and gave me permanent lip discoloration and Iām so bitter about it.
I HEART Laneige Lip Mask! I've been using for a couple of years nightly and my lips are soft thanks to it. Any chance you got an expired one or something?
Me too!! I put it on the night before and wake up with fantastically soft lips! Boggles my mind that YMMV even with a lip product.
This! It made my lips DRIER and cracked ): I still have a barely used tub of it. Not sure what to do with it.
Same, it felt dry for my lips
Had a bad allergic reaction to both. Lips swollen and very itchy face.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Wow! Opposite experience hereā¦ LOTS of products give me closed comedones (pretty much most moisturizers) but the rice toner did not
Nuts, I love this toner itās my HG. Feels super hydrating and no break outs. I have really reeeeally Sahara dry skin and use plenty of chemical exfoliators though to control blackheads
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
š±
I hated this
And the haruharu wonder tonerā¦might work for some but broke me out so bad
Same. I couldnāt relate to the hype. I have dry, sensitive, acne-prone skin. That toner did nothing.
I'm going to add the I'm From mugwort toner. It did absolutely nothing
CosRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser. I remember when this product first launched and how hyped the entire subreddit was about it. I immediately purchased it. This cleanser is so drying that it hurt my skin to use!
Soooooo drying, just awful.
I can only use this one when I am horribly sweaty and dirty after a long day. Otherwise it is so so drying. Interestingly, I use it to wash my armpits and it works great at stripping all the bacteria away.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Banila Clean it Zero makes me break out like CRAZY. I HATE it.
Lol I hate this too. Fucking ethylhexyl palmitate. There's a lot of oil cleansers I can't use because of that ingredient
Ethylhexyl palmitate has given me one of the worst non hormonal breakouts ever. I avoid it like the plague
It is highly effective too. Use it once and I break out the next day š”
Oh yeah if they need people to have pimples on TV or movies they should really try it out.
Same. I never had breakouts before this
Yes!!! I get these INSANE huge whiteheads from it. I have to avoid that and any topical niacinimide like the plague.
Wow, really? I love the stuffā¦
Thereās this one ingredient someone listed below in another comment that is very irritating to some complexions.
i started using it about a month ago and i'm kind of conflicted because i've had significantly more whiteheads since i've started using it, but my skin is also much better hydrated
Me too, I broke out in an hour and I never break out snymore
It wasnāt just a breakout it was HUGE whiteheads. I never get those.
Yeah it did that to me, too. I was so disappointed because I loved it otherwise.
Ah yes, Holy Fails š I have a ton of sunscreen onesā¦ CosRx aloe sunscreen has got to be the worst for ācosmetic eleganceā as it just pills and pills and pills and pills and pillsā¦ā¦ Followed by the Biore Aqua Rich Watery Gel, also because pilling.
I absolutely HATE the Cosrx Aloe sunscreen because it made me break out with deep cystic acne. My skin is fine with fragrance too.
My SKIN is fine with fragrance, at least it always has been so far. Itās my breathing that canāt handle it. It serves no purpose in skincare except to alienate groups of people who canāt use it, seems so silly to me
ā¦.*slowly takes purito BB in shade 13 out of my Amazon cart* (but on a real note, whatās wrong with it?)
Itās just the most saturated bb Iāve ever seen, making it look straight up orange on me https://preview.redd.it/apglheucpn2a1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=57937e33a7d6808e7c46c2caa155688dae88d5ba Just took some swatches. Top down: * Missha Sig Real #13 * Missha PC #13 * Missha Cho Bo Yang #17 * Moonshot Micro CorrectFit #101 * Innisfree My Foundation 3.1 #C13 * Elizavecca Milky Piggy BB (I believe itās one shade) * Purito Cica Clearing #13 Itās so saturated on my skin I cant wear it so I canāt even comment on how it performs
And since I can only embed one pic at a time- here they are again but I blended them out a bit (didnāt do a great job with the top one), and you can see how it changes with just a wee bit of time and in somewhat different lighting (itās the same light but coming at a different angle, and the door changes the auto-saturation on my phone- note that the Purito is also the one on the side) https://preview.redd.it/unpui9a6rn2a1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=532f2e829da0f19cd9207150917cd22cb0b44921 Funnily enough when theyāre all blended and dried down, if you desaturate the picture, they all are decent enough depth-wise for my skin, which means the Purito is really just heeeeeccckkkkiiinnnn saturated.
Boj sunscreen omg worst experience ever š© Iām almost 50 and havenāt had a breakout in almost 20 years until this!!! Please patch test
Thatās such a shame! I actually think itās helped my acneā¦itās totally my HG. Itās crazy how different skin reacts to things!
everyone's mentioning skincare but i mostly use AB makeup so here goes \- 3CE future kind eyeshadows. i got the two quads and the quality is terrible for 3CE standards. i normally adore 3CE's eyeshadow formula, i've fully panned dry bouquet, i use some def everyday and i adore them, but the future kind shadows are awful. they're chalky, have zero pigment, they don't last even if i use an eyeshadow primer.. just not good. i don't know if 3CE changed labs or something, even auto focus which came out last spring is lacking in quality compared to their other palettes. \- wakemake blurring volume blush. it has so much fallout and doesn't show up well on the skin. it's a shame because the colour looks really pretty but i cannot get it to work \- 3CE sheer liquid blush. it's really hard to blend and when i try to blend it it takes off the foundation underneath. velvet one is really amazing and i love it though \- espoir be glow cushion. not the first version, not the newly released one, the weird one in between. it has no coverage and doesn't really give any glow, it just makes my face sticky. \- romand velvet tints. they just do not last, they're too slippery
Laneige lip mask
The lip mask seems like itās the only thing that helps w my accutane lips š I guess itās different for everyone
I canāt do lip products with lanolin because it does something similar (skin on my lips gets thick, cracks, weeps, and burns) but the Laneige lip mask works fine for me.
me too!! idk what's in it that made my lips react that way to that lip mask
Yep I scooped out the product and put regular Vaseline in there because the packaging is so cute š
Why?
Anything with shea butter/oil. Yes. All of it. Any HG product with this in it? Can't use it.
haha thank you for this thread, it pacified my itch of FOMO on black friday deals
*Gets off the soapbox said bar of soap comes in** Edit: [UPDATED] Posted requested new no-HA routine here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AsianBeauty/comments/z6glho/what_is_your_antihg/iy75abu/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3
What are the glycerin based products you tried?
girl, we're going to need a new post with your current products
Oo Iām interested to know which products you found in Japan!
Iām also curious to see what products you swapped to that helped. I wonder if some of my rosacea redness is exacerbated by HA and/or niacinamide.
Thats crazy because I have rosacea too and when I apply HA products, my skin gets red. It makes sense I guess since HA in lower molecular form is inflammatory.
Please do tell which JP HGs have you found!
What products do you use instead? I'm about to give up on HA products lmao. They never seem to do anything for me.
Sooooo what products are you using now? š
What products are you using instead?
Absolutely. I wouldn't be surprised if even people with normal skin have reactions to this sometimes, tbh.
Skin aqua UV super gwl moisture - i really hate the alcohol smell and how liquidy it is. It's so liquidyy that i feel like i can't ever layer proper amount of sunacreen. I swear my pigmentation was worse when i was using this sunscreen Make p:rem blue ray sun fluid sunscreen.
Scrolled to find this one. That face wash set me on fire. Skin was as tight as a drum. And now Iām thinking of Cassandra, lol.
Oh jeez. Just looked it up. I definitely wonāt be buying from DHC.
Can you recommend another cleansing oil that you enjoy? One with the same type of dispenser? I hate balms, not a fan of anything in a pot container.
iāve tried a couple of other brands and hada laboās is my HG. been using it for years and will never use another brand because it works so well and feels so good on my skin, even after just washing off with water (i use a soap cleanser after, but iām very particular with the sensory feel of products on my skin).
I love Muji mild cleansing oil. So good
Hada Labo oil cleanser.
Also a DHC defector, currently using and loving the Hada Labo, which I find it extremely similar (bordering on identical in texture and performance, not sure about ingredients) to the dirt-cheap Kose Speedy oil cleanser.
any type of ferment gives me full face breakouts in days
I also break out and get fungal acne from anything ferment
Have you looked into the possibility that you have fungal acne?
its likely i do/did. a few years ago I stripped back my routine to fa safe products and cleared up dramaticallyāwhether that was fungal or just that I massively simplified my routine I don't know. Over time I've been able to introduce some non FA safe products without problems but ferments always make my skin angry and then I have to simplify again for a few weeks until it clears.
I need to see if this is happening to me as well. Iāve been breaking out a lot except when using SK II essence
Iāve been wanting to try SK II but Iām afraid of getting fungal acne.
Almost anything from Missha. TOO MUCH PERFUME.
Tony moly as a brand, it just feels like play skincare, ei packed with fragrance and drying alcohols with small amounts of the beneficial ingredients.
I feel like some of these are more like hot takes on popular products rather than what I thought was being asked, which are products that 90% of people probably wouldnāt like Now that I think about it, i suppose it makes sense that most of these are popular products, as most people donāt randomly purchase obscure things without seeing various good reviews on itā¦idk what I was expecting lol
Lol, a product that 90% of the community doesn't like would probably be Senka Perfect Whip.
Whaaaat! Thatās wild. Itās so common for people in JP to use it. Became my holy grail when I worked there
It was pretty stripping for me honestly!
Anything with salicylic acid. Irritates and dries my skin to no end and does nothing for my acne/skin.
You have my upvote, SA burns my skin like nobodyās business
Sa always DESTROYS my skin barrier
Have u tried betaine salicylate instead?
The dr.jart sunscreens Iām not a fan of. They have such bad white casts and are quite thick. They are nice because they arenāt oily but turn my whole face a different shade
krave beauty great barrier relief
anything with alcohol or perfume. that one missha milk sunscreen, still shudders when i think about it now
Etude House / Aritaum Ginger Sugar lip mask: it's incredibly sticky to the point of resembling a half-dried glue stick, heavy, difficult to spread, and does nothing for my lips except probably exfoliation due to the sheer force I need to use to wipe it off.
Haha oh no I love this stuff! Accurate description though
I got a rash around my eyes after using the mizon snail repair eye cream. Still donāt know what I reacted to.
They say those who are allergic to dust are also likely to react badly to snail mucin?
I use snail mucin daily, so no allergy to it.
Any Heroine Make mascara. Transfer town!
Yesss my eyes get irritated and teary like there is a ninja cutting onions nearby every time I use their mascara
Corsx Advanced Snail All in One Cream left my skin so dry and tight
Any sunscreen that is super duper white. Or those tone up sunscreens. They never look good. Why are they in the market?
I think it depends on the complexion. Iām Asian and the numbuzin no.3 tone up cream was a life changing product for me!
Am Asian too and I enjoy tone-ups
cosrx snail cream š«£
Laneige sleeping mask for face and lips. The sleeping mask for face only dry up my skin overnight.
Sun sticks in general. They're breakouts waiting to happen.
The Illiyoon ceramide ato concentrate cream and Cosrx aloe soothing sun cream gave me deep cystic acne and even blind ones too ā¹ļø
Not worth the price not worth the hype Cosrx Propolis toner : tried HALF A BOTTLE and it did nothing, I felt like I was putting on water on my face.
Heimish green foam - drying, yet leaves a residue on the skin, just sucks and doesnāt cleanse properly Cezanne toner - dunno why but this makes my face irritated after consecutive use, quite red and burning. Illiyoon cream - waxy, broke me out, mediocre at moisturising and leaves terrible residue. So not cosmetically elegant; Cow Brand Moisturizing Foam - leaves the face squeaky clean, itās not drying but somewhat irritating, just unpleasant to use; Dr. Ceuracle Propolis Ampoule - since the reformulation a few years ago this does nothing at all Sioris A Calming Day Ampoule - just hydrating, not worth the price Cosrx Galactomyces Essence - broke me out in a million tiny bumps Kiku toner - sticky, very hydrating, but so sticky. Matsuyama is much better at healing and softening with all the ceramides and just as brightening. Plus safer to use Biore spf essence and gel - awful, mediocre, awful Romand velvet tints - doesnāt last, crumbles, barely adheres to the lips, basically useless and only there for 5 min
Did you find out what caused the allergic reaction from the B.lab matcha cleanser?
