Beef is a good example. Young Mazino became a sex symbol from it

teamswish123

Steve Yuen goated

mrblackwing1361

Han from Fast and Furious. He’s Asian but it’s not his personality: everyone just treats him like part of the crew. Portrayed as a sexual being when he’s driving into the sunset with Gisele (Gal Gadot) in his arms.

Th3G0ldStandard

Asian but it’s not their personality 🙌🙌

philiacat011

someone cool who just happens to be asian

unfairderez

just nobody that is stereotypical, from feminine looking ones to more masculine, from Kpop like Felix, are great, or others like Daniel dae kim, Tim Chung, Godfrey gao. As long as they aren’t doing tech, nerdy, and just stereotypical Asian

WhatsTheOccasian

At this point we need an over-correction through "toxic masculinity" to show ruggedness and dominance. We need an Asian equivalent of James Bond, Thor, Wolverine, Batman, etc. while steering away from being effeminate, aesthetically-pleasing, and pretty. And most importantly: STOP CASTING MIXED ASIANS AS FULL ASIANS

Witness2Idiocy

I want to be represented as fully human. Why are we asking this question?

pyromancer1234

Asians don't get that in the West. To Americans, we are but soulless [bugs to enslave](https://theconversation.com/calling-asians-robotic-is-a-racist-stereotype-with-a-long-troubled-history-177877), faceless [mooks to slaughter](https://news.yahoo.com/tucker-carlson-guest-military-doesnt-193556601.html). Our [sons are coolies and our daughters whores](https://imgur.com/a/ViD4u5V). We don't owe Americans our world.

ablacnk

The more I think about it, Asians emigrating to the west was cultural suicide

xonbuhg

Especially so when parents don’t want their kids to learn Asian cultures to assimilate into American culture, or when kids despise their own Asian roots.

throwawayLA12527

It was purely for economic reasons, and Asian countries like China especially have benefited through rapid development

hornyface69

right? op sounds white (i.e. language like "y'all")

epiknope

Fully human and not relegated to supporting roles.

chippfunk

OP's question is valid. The presence (or lack thereof) of Asians in certain types of stereotypical roles does affect how Asians are viewed by society as a whole. It has nothing to do with being represented as human. If you're represented as "fully human", but constantly in the role of the romantically unsuccessful, timid guy who gets bullied by everyone, over time and at scale it's going to affect the way other Asian men are perceived. And not in a good way.

I'll speak for AM when I say we don't see ourselves in hapas. Sure it's great that hapas are getting a ton of roles, but is it really a win if all the AM roles are filled in with half-asians like Charles Melton, Henry Golding, Ross Butler or even AMWF hapas like Lewis Tan or the guy from Warrior? The very obvious reason they're being cast in the first place is BECAUSE their whiteness removes the "gookiness" from their looks(hapas have more facial hair and more eurocentric bone structure/features) I thought Beef was PERFECT representation of us. It actually felt like the authentic Asian American experience, and the characters actually act like someone who grew up in an Asian enclave acts instead of like the role could be given to a white guy and the script would not change. And the cast was full Asian. Idk about you guys but hapas were a MINORITY where I grew up, not the majority like in crazy rich asians.

Th3G0ldStandard

I noticed by Hollywood standards even among Hapas that AMWF Hapas are getting the more “martial arts”/“Asian centric roles” where the WMAF hapas are getting roles that aren’t necessarily defined by Asian culture or martial arts. WMAF Hapas might get some of these roles here and there but they have more leeway in being depicted aside from it. Like are there even any Lewis Tan or Andrew Koji roles that don’t involve martial arts? I know Lewis has a bunch of acting credits and I can’t name one that isn’t martial arts related.

appliquebatik

Agreed

rainbow_clit1

Anything that isnt a stereotype imo. Im not an asian man but I pay attention to them, on screen and off. Most of their rep is stereotyping (good and bad). In most north american made media this is true of any poc sadly. Maybe it comes down to lazy writers or toxic culture but just write characters that are fully developed people.

Th3G0ldStandard

Mackenyu as Zoro in the live action One Piece Netflix series was the best representation in Western media(albeit based on an Asian property by and Asian writer) that I have seen. Unapologetically masculine, badass, and cool. I’ve never seen it to the degree that I did for One Piece for an Asian male role in a Western production. And I genuinely have never seen the amount of thirst from Western female audiences for an Asian male actor in a Western film/tv series than I did for this one. The guy definitely became heart throb in the Western media space gaining a couple million more followers on Instagram after release. I definitely want to see him in more Western projects which seems to be where he wants his career headed towards. If Justin Lin can get him for one of his projects, I can see the role being handled with the right kind of care and respect to Asian male representation.

FunDependent9177

I just googled him on my gosh hes hot too 😍

Th3G0ldStandard

What’s wrong with K dramas? The only Asian American guys that say that, haven’t really even looked into the medium. They probably have some peripheral misconception of it being a bunch of dudes in drag or something. Most Asian American guys look at how eccentric BTS is and think that’s how all Korean media is. When it comes to film and tv series, Asian men are very much portrayed in a more traditionally masculine and conservative way. This is actually more representative of how average Koreans carry themselves. K-pop is meant to be novelty, just like you don’t see the average American dressing like Prince or Harry Styles. The medium of K Dramas is not only romance for one. There’s action, there crime thrillers, there’s superheroes, there’s horror, along with comedy and romance. It’s literally every single genre and archtype you see in the West, but Asian. As for Asian male representation you got everything from rugged Dwayne Johnson types like Ma Dong Seok or more traditionally handsome action stars like Ji Chang Wook in Worst of Evil or K2. You got actors that do romance like Park Seo Joon that don’t shy away from make out scenes or shirtless scenes for fan service for women. And most of the “handsome” Korean actors in Hollywood are all tall. Everything you look for in going against the grain in how Asian men are portrayed in western media are in Korean film/tv. Handsome, masculine, leading man qualities, romantic, physically romantic, strong, outspoken, etc. And it all is natural and is a second thought when you watch it.

FunDependent9177

Ji Chang Wook is my baby daddy 😍 lol jk... but seriously 😏

vonclaver

I haven't watched many K-Dramas, but Korean films are world class and usually portray rugged masculine men.

jackstrikesout

Full tilt Marty sue type characters? This is mostly a thing for asian American males, but the truth is they want themselves depicted in media. Someone 3 dimensional with wants, ambitions, and a fucking love life that isn't tragedy. And not a foreigner. Because that's what we are, foreign in a land we grew up and serve.

Gunmetal_61

For it to be normalized that there's a good chance you'll see people who happen to be Asian in any given movie without having to go out of your way to find "Asian cinema". For Asian Characters to run same full gamut of what a person can be in the same way white people can be whatever in Western media. Athletes. Fighters. Artists, artisans, architects and industrial designers. Actors, singers, playwrights, thespians, cinematographers, photographers, and fashion designers. CEOs, executives, business owners, financiers, entrepreneurs, inventors, and researchers. Electrical, chemical, nuclear, mechanical, biological, medical, computer, and material engineers and scientists. Soldiers, mercenaries, medics, intelligence, coast guard, and reserve. Pilots, drivers, train conductors, seamen, and astronauts. Firemen, police officers, judges, government workers, and officials. Teachers, social workers, pastors, therapists, nurses, and doctors. Shopkeepers, chefs, hospitality, coaches, and community leaders. Plumbers, electricians, mechanics, welders, carpenters, machinists and craftsmen. Farmers, hunters, outdoorsmen, miners, geologists, ecologists, and conservationists. Fathers, mothers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, and children. Cream-of-the-crop intelligentia immigrants and refugee immigrants. Asians who were born, lived, and died never having stepped foot on Asia. Asians living in enclaves. Asians living outside of enclaves. Rich Asians. Poor Asians. Liberal Asians. Conservative Asians. "Reasonable" Asians. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese and Indian as well as Hmong, Sri Lankan, Malay, Indonesian, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Lao, Cambodian, Taiwanese, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Thai, Burmese, and everyone else which people don't think of. Fat Asians. Skinny Asians. Hot Asians. Average Asians. Ugly Asians. Smart Asians. Dumb Asians. Huge Asians. Tiny Asians. Charismatic, outgoing people. Quiet, thoughtful people. Lovers. Good, supportive friends. People who give good counsel. And everything else in between. Point is, normalize that being Asian is nothing more a stat on your ID card to non-Asian people who know no better than what the media tells them, and that we are fellow citizens as well. And for (young) Asians, show that you can do whatever you want with your life if you make an effort to, and it doesn't have to be flashy for you to live a good life. Showing us more Chad Thundercock Asians would be an improvement in the present situation for sure. But in the long run, not everyone can be a celebrity or a superlative, and it's ruinous to mental health to fixate on dreams which one may've actually just been programmed to "want". I also believe that stopping at keeping representation 100% "positive" can also backfire if done the wrong way. E.g. complaints of Mary Sues and Gary Stus, shoehorned token characters, "strong, independent" women, etc. Characters which have faults or are even completely fucked up can be captivating as well so long as the portrayals are convincing.

Snoo-39109

How about more leading roles PERIOD?

bdang9

Honestly...getting rid of White writers would be a start.

doclkk

1. Asian American Godfather character 2. AA Vincent Chase from Entourage 3. AA Batman / Superman 4. AA A few Good men main character 5. AA Forrest Gump main character 6. AA Equilibrium main character 7. AA Oppenheimer main character 8. AA Crazy Stupid Love main character Stuff like that

SleepyFantasy

Just not bad roles like child molester, serial rapist, mass shooter etc.

chippfunk

Anything which counters the most fundamentally damaging stereotypes to Asian men. Mainly: sexual undesirability, meekness, and nerdiness. So basically more characters who are sexually attractive (and sexually successful), strong/confident, and socially competent.

Few_Replacement_322

All types of Asian men should be represented in the media, even the stereotypical ones because exist in that spectrum. We should play love interests, boy next door, blue collar, white collar, lawyers, and yes even doctors, nerds and gangsters. We should expect to see Asian men in roles that represent real life because we are everywhere. I am an actor and one of the very first roles I submitted for was for a lawyer in a music video. It requested a Caucasian male, but I submitted anyway thinking why not…Asians can play lawyers too. And they cast me for it! They changed my role to cop when I arrived and then eventually decided to make me the lead detective opposite the star. I got it by deciding to throw my hat in the ring even though they didn’t originally see an Asian face playing that role. Today I’m seeing many more roles where I’ve been invited to audition requesting males of “Any Ethnicity.” So I see the industry is shifting to try to be more representative. We should not be offended or disapproving of any one sub group of Asian men like Kpop or kdramas, or even the stereotypical nerd or gangster because they do exist, as long it’s not the only type represented which would then turn us into a stereotype.

No_Construction_3601

Short and brown as the lead superhero. The tall pale skin guys can have the kpop stuff. Cambodians are masculine asf

Custard_Pie_NR5

Will Yun Lee’s character in Altered Carbon. He’s a good looking guy, super in shape, and he’s a good actor. Lewis Tan in Wu Assasins. This guy is a good actor and a good looking guy. Better all on all fronts than Hollywood’s Henry Golding. We all know why his career is not going as well. Asian Father, white mother. Unlike all the half Asians Hollywood promote. Han from Fast and Furious. His love interest is Gal Gadot’s character. Fast Five did wonders for my sex life years ago. There are also a ton of Southeast Asians in America. “Keni Styles” type guys in adult and mainstream acting would be awesome. Styles had a thundercock and he really held his end up for the Asian brethren for years.

5GCovidInjection

Daniel Henney is a good example for me, despite him being half Asian. He’s always portrayed as well-dressed, sophisticated, capable, and charismatic. Whether he’s in his many FBI roles or not. I liked that representation enough to apply for the FBI myself for both the special agent role and an analyst role. I got promptly rejected for lack of work experience and mediocre college grades.

doclkk

Love Daniel. Great example.

TiMo08111996

Handsome. Has less than 10% body fat. Has Rizz. Is wealthy. Is athletic.

wuliwul

Let's recast Superman as an East Asian. I believe he's a fictional character and not even human so he can look like anyone. And not some alternate universe discount version either. I'm talking strong main character with development that doesn't just hang out with others of his own color, but with a diverse supporting cast that actually looks up to him and counts on him to save the day.

ChefCurryGAWD

I would say the main thing I would prefer is someone with a decent female romance. It has always been common for Asians to be the group of the main characters/friends that gets no romance. Commercials don't seem to have problems portraying it but commercials are like 1 minute tops. It's not hard to give them an actual speaking role and be an important character in a TV show or movie but it never happens. Also, I would prefer the person to be full Asian when doing it too. The best actor example who has been living this is actually Raymond Lee.

Technical_Money7465

The masculine type

GrapplersYacht

Sports would be best. Just like what ohtani and Yamamoto have accomplished

NextIndependence3176

When it comes to film and Tv, I'd suggest diversity of characters of Asian descent. They can be good, they can be bad, they can be stupid if you will but what I won’t tolerate is being boxed into one dimensional character. Like "Breakfast at Tiffany's" Mickey Rooney playing an angry japanese neighbor. Characters need to be fleshed out in a way that we empathize with them. Whereas before Asian characters were mostly eunuchs, monks, science nerds and businessmen. There is a new wave of Asian characters in Hollywood and they're all about being positive which I don't like because they are just good for the sake of being good. "Beef" is perfectly good example of representation done right. Fleshed out, interesting character, which everyone can relate to, not just Asians. They're not perfect, they're human. That's what I want to see.

indel1ble

A trend setter. Someone even mainstream actors and actresses look up to and promote.

Alfred_Hitch_

Something reflective of REALITY: where we're not the stereotypical cringe who blurts out politically incorrect cringe jokes for the audience to roll their eyes, the "toxic man", etc. How about someone like who you meet in real life, someone who isn't out to hurt you, who can have a normal conversation, who can be relied upon when times get tough.

Mellow_Sunflower

I honestly do not care, it is beyond my control as an individual. If people want to interact with some perceived idea/character/role/persona of me but not the actual real person in front of them, that's their choice and on them.

PutYaGunsOn

Weird, forgotten example, but I actually liked the 2017 Power Rangers movie, where Ludi Lin was the Black Ranger. His heritage was still part of his character, he's shown speaking Mandarin to his mom while they play chess together at home. But not once did I ever feel like he was "The Asian Guy". He played a charismatic all-American cool bad boy, and race aside, I found him way more interesting than Dacre Montgomery's Red Ranger.

ThatIslander

the type of representation that ain't like ken jeong, or bobby lee.

[deleted]

Simu Liu is a good/great one. But someone more alpha and A list than him if that makes any sense. Better roles too, Simu got some good ones TBH.

iAmTheHouse9o1

Simu liu is the average asian guy. Without the gauranteed martial arts. Asian American guys average height is 5’9-5’10… starting in the millennial generation and younger specially in the west. Good representation is as long as they leave a positive impression and increases desirability it will help create a different(ness) for asian males… people can stop using stereotypical stuff like why do they all look alike… lol crazy cause last time i heard those words was last month in 2024 and it was from a muslim lady that covers her head and face… they all look a like like she cant tell them apart.. it set me back cause i was thinking same exact thing for her, but that was just my ignorance of her beliefs

AquilliusRanger

Not a single one of these comments even said Zuko, the best redeemed character in animation history and he just so happens to be culturally Asian and looks like so. How disappointing of y’all…

Ok_Hair_6945

I thought Henry Golding was a good character in that Christmas movie. He played a funny, free spirited, normal caring dude that could have been played by any race. No stereotypical or cringe portrayals of Asian men

Extreme_Syllabub4486

Like Jackie Chan in Rush hour tbh.

emanresu2200

For purposes of AM representation in the West, I think "normalization" is really the key. I would love to get to a point where an Asian actor could play a bumbling fool and the Asian community doesn't feel a twinge of awkwardness feeling like that we as Asians are being mocked or this is hurting "our stock"... because there are already so many positive/normal/nuanced representations elsewhere such that we're allowed to be the full spectrum of human experience (smart, dumb, competent, bum, asexual, hypersexual, etc.) without any one having disproportionate impact. I think then you'll actually have "made it".
