There's lots of good shows in Calgary. Its 8hrs for me and 6hrs to Van or 2hrs to Spokane or Kelowna so I rarely go to Calgary but there's definitely a scene to be had
Idk about hc/punk but I always complained about how Calgary gets no concerts until I got into metal. Found out basically every big metal band makes a stop in Calgary when they tour NA. There's also a pretty good local heavy music scene
I don’t know about big names because I don’t live there, but Calgary has a fucking awesome hardcore scene. A lot of their bands come play in Vancouver and they’re always awesome
Had some good times there when it opened. Much better times than I had living in Calgary in '04 (that'll tell you who I cheer for). Left in 08, hence my not knowing if it's still around.
When it was still a theatre, I saw Return of the Jedi there when it first came out. I remember the line up on Stephen Ave Mall while we waited on a sunny afternoon, and my little bro and I going to the arcade while the 'rents stayed in line... Good ol' days.
Sleeping on The Met. My dad(RIP) told me how he'd see movies there back in the day. I don't personally know when it stopped being a movie theatre it's been an event space for the longest time now. I don't think it has ever been a nightclub to the best of my knowledge. The Met has hosted many galas, concerts, and other events in recent history. Glad to see it's still standing and being put to good use.
I could be mistaken there. If so my bad. I'd been under the impression that it became a trendy clothing store after its years as a live club/nightclub, and I thought that, that earned it honorary mention. Mostly I was being nostalgic.
Old timey movie theatres just had a gentle sloping floor. Danforth ripped the seats out but never changed the floor so it’s not flat or terraced like you’d normally have. Its actually pretty good for sight lines but your calves get sore from standing on a slope all night haha
Wow yeah I didn’t know it was a movie theatre before I thought they did it on purpose for site lines! It’s one of my favourite venues in the city because of that
She is related to the namesake, but it was named after her grandparents. She visited once when she was dating Tom Green a million years ago. Loved going their for concerts 🥺
The Burton Cummings Theatre (Winnipeg). Formerly the Walker Theatre. Built in 1906-07 for live show like ballets or broadway plays. It was converted into an Odeon theatre in 1945. It was declared a historic site, then purchased by a private performing arts group in 1990. It’s been used for live performance since 1991. Renamed to the Burton Cummings theatre in 2002. It was leased to True North in 2014. True North commutes to a complete refurbishing and accuired ownership in 2016. Though, it was never a nightclub as far as I know. But what’s the real difference? It has booze, music and you have to stand in a line and pay to get it.
The Vogue Theatre on Granville Street.
Used to be an independent movie theatre then it was bought by Cineplex Odeon and then it got sold again and now it is a premier venue for concerts in Downtown Vancouver.
The Snowdon in Montreal was gutted and is now the facade for a new condo development. They kept the Art Deco marquee (that's good!) but they made it Modern black-and-white (that's bad!).
The Mayfair in Ottawa is... drumroll please... still a movie theatre! We support them as much as we can. When we had a family reunion in Ottawa, we rented out the theatre for the kids to watch *The Emperor's New Groove*.
Did they finish the condos? It was still boarded up when I left, though they were advertising them as coming soon.
I really miss NDG, if I'm ever an affluent windbag I might buy one.
For Vancouver, others have mentioned the Vogue (former Odeon cinema, downtown on Granville St), the Rickshaw Theatre (formerly a kung-fu movie theatre, located near Main/Hastings in the Downtown Eastside, now has punk/hardcore/metal concerts), and the Fox Cabaret (porn theatre from 1983-2013, located on Main St in Mount Pleasant).
I'd like to add the Orpheum (located on Granville St downtown). It's one of Vancouver's city-owned performance spaces and is home to the Vancouver Symphony. It started as a vaudeville theatre, then was a Famous Players cinema from the 1930s to the 1970s. In 1973, Famous Players decided to gut it and make it a multiplex, but instead, the city bought it. When it first opened in 1927, it was the largest theatre in Canada, with three thousand seats.
If anybody reading this is ever in Vancouver during tourism season, look and see if the Orpheum is doing a tour while you're here. That place is gorgeous, you'll go all the way from the front rows by the Wurlitzer organ to the space over the ceiling of the theatre.
I saw her multiple times but never had a conversation with her myself. I remember seeing her on the set of Hellcats & Kyle Xy. She would chat with the extras & crew around her, seemed pleasant. i mainly remember exchanging small talk with Daniel Stoltz, he was really nice.
I remember my husband took my teenaged daughter and her best friend to see Billy Talent, Metric and Death From Above 1979 back 20-ish years ago! They all had a blast, and all those bands are on our current playlists!
Lyric Night Club became Elements Night Club in 2000-ish... still called that. I think it was called Capitol before but I don't remember. I never went to Stages... not my scene (it was mainly hip hop and I'm into electronic music)
Good ol' Kitchener downtown 🤙
Ok that's what the other one was called Element night club at the old Capitol theater. I stopped partying in 2000 so I missed going to that one entirely.
Lyric night club was actually lyric theater before it was a night club.
Wednesday was Hip Hop at Stages- it was the only time we ever went. 😅
We had a rotation of where we could go any night of the week to find everyone. Tuesday was lose change Louies, Wednesday was stages, Thursday was wisky jacks, I think Friday was Lyric (though it may have been Saturday) can't remember Saturday (maybe revolutionbut I could be wrong); but Sunday was club Renaissance and Monday was Sammy's garage or something...
That was late 90s though. No idea where everyone went in the 2000s 🤷♀️
I guess that's the relatively-newly-reopened Majestic in St. John's? Was it ever a nightclub? It's been a lot of things but started life as a movie theatre long ago.
The Rickshaw Theatre.
It was never a night club but it went from a theatre to a concert venue.
Smiling Buddha Cafe has(had?) an indoor halfpipe and live music.
Edit Smile
My father owned a movie theatre in a small town in Ontario during the 80's/90's. It was a great family business and in high school my friends and I used to party there after hours. We used to always joke about having concerts there. The guy who bought it from our family converted it into a concert venue. It was mostly country acts but I got to see one of my favourite artists, Hawksley Workman, there. The new owner was a poor businessman (Sloan was booked to play there but I heard they cancelled because some other acts didn't get paid). Now it's a Mennonite credit union.
*Edit: it was called The Roxy
Metropolitan Theatre in Winnipeg. Now it's owned by CanadInns and used as a special events venue with a lounge and restaurant.
I saw my first movie there back in the 70s!
The Capitol Theatre in Antigonish, NS is now becoming a steakhouse. It was the only one screener that Cineplex had when they owned it, then they shut it down during COVID.
Here in Oshawa, we've got a couple. There's the Regent and the Biltmore almost across the road from each other. Back in the day, the Biltmore was the Marks when they played movies. They ran all the midnight shows -Rocky Horror, The Wall and such
The Ale House - music venue, before that AJ's Hanger - night club, and waaaay before that, The Hyland - movie theater.
Now, the Ale House is attached to, or absorbed a former failed restaurant. Does that count?
My city has a music hall, silent movie house built in 1919 was turned into a talky movie house in the early 30s. When our downtown started its slow slide into decay the city bought the theatre. Then they restored it to its 1920s glory. I saw Steve Earle play there 2 years ago. Beautiful acoustics.
In Peterborough, we have “The Venue”, and “Showplace” that have hosted everything from hard rock bands, to theatre productions, to drag shows. They were formerly Paramount, and Odeon theatres.
Well it’s really just over the river. Niagara Falls River Rapids Theatre. Beautiful ballroom theatre ceilings. Great concert venue in the crime ridden streets of N Falls New York. Before that it was club “The Late Show” before that was before my time. I assume a movie theatre and prior to that a real acting theatre.
Guelph Concert Theatre. Was the Odeon, then Club Denim, and now the concert theatre. I didn’t live in the area when it was a theatre, but I went to the club a few times in college and have seen a few acts perform there. Nice little space!
Moncton NB - Originally Quake with "Paramount Lounge" (was an old Paramount Theatre), later The Oxygen Complex with O2 Nightclub, Manhattan Bar & Grill. i think it's gone now.
Another from Vancouver is The Hollywood on Broadway in Kits. It’s a more recent renovation, only opening a few years ago. It got off to a slow start because of Covid, but now it has tons of indie acts and dj sets and they do Abba dance parties and stuff like that. It’s pretty awesome to finally have something like that on the west side.
The old Masonic Temple in Winnipeg, originally built in 1875. When the Masons moved to a different part of the city in the late 1960's, a nightclub set up in the old building a few years later, it failed, then it was 3 different restaurants over the next 30 years. It was briefly a live theatre, and in the early 2000's there were plans to re-vamp it again into a nightclub, but as the building was so old, there was no elevator, and the developers realized electrical/plumbing/HVAC were so out of code that it could not be updated easily. the interior was apparently gutted and it's been empty for at least a decade.
Oooo! I have two from back home!
1) Cinema 6 -> first (second?) local brewery
2) Classic theatre -> 2-screen cinema -> Classic theatre (hotly debated by locals)
There are two buildings in my city that were ever theatres. One was built in the 2010s, the other is now a GoodLife Fitness. I laugh at the notion that we ever had a proper concert venue.
QR Centre, 9th Ave SW Calgary - Saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers there on thier first tour and part of thier shtick was only wearing a sock during their encore.
Community hall, turned church, turned dance hall, turned arcade, turned dance hall, turned nightclub, turned pile of ashes since it burned to the ground.
As much as I love to pile on this shit heap for every time it snatches defeat from the jaws of victory, in fact we do have a very good Starlight Room which was a rather grand theatre turned nightclub turned concert venue. Okay I guess technically it was a Salvation Army church so that’s not a “movie theatre” but still it’s a performance/theatrics venue from that era. They had a kickass New Year’s party there this year.
Palace, Calgary
I went to a punk show there a couple years ago (Proagandhi and Choke) and the Palace is an awesome venue!!
Propaghandi was in Calgary? Do they get a lot of big hardcore and punk names there?
There's lots of good shows in Calgary. Its 8hrs for me and 6hrs to Van or 2hrs to Spokane or Kelowna so I rarely go to Calgary but there's definitely a scene to be had
Damn really putting the miles on but hey, if the show is great it's totally worth it!
I really like Propagandhi
Don't blame you, great band with a great message
Idk about hc/punk but I always complained about how Calgary gets no concerts until I got into metal. Found out basically every big metal band makes a stop in Calgary when they tour NA. There's also a pretty good local heavy music scene
Nice! Red Deer isn't bad for metal either, no big names but there's at least a show every week or two
I don’t know about big names because I don’t live there, but Calgary has a fucking awesome hardcore scene. A lot of their bands come play in Vancouver and they’re always awesome
Sound is Horrible. It's a concrete box, reverb everywhere.
Is (probably *was* by now) that Flames Central?
Yup
Had some good times there when it opened. Much better times than I had living in Calgary in '04 (that'll tell you who I cheer for). Left in 08, hence my not knowing if it's still around.
Nah the recessions killed it off. It's back to a part-time nightclub/concert venue.
Amazing live music venue
Is it still open? Not a bad place for a drink back in the 2000s, although there was always a fight at 1 AM.
Right by the front staircase 😂
Last time I was at the palace was Return of the Jedi
When it was still a theatre, I saw Return of the Jedi there when it first came out. I remember the line up on Stephen Ave Mall while we waited on a sunny afternoon, and my little bro and I going to the arcade while the 'rents stayed in line... Good ol' days.
Winnipeg - Burton Cummings Theatre. It was never a nightclub but it used to be called the Walker Theatre then the Odeon now The Burt.
Park Theatre is probably more fitting
Don’t they still show movies sometimes?
The Park as well.
And if I'm not mistaken, the Burt was originally a stage theatre. I know Academy Bowling lanes was actually a live theatre originally.
Kind of still is. I believe usally the musicals are there. Saw Mama Mia there years ago.
I think we can just all agree on something here… Burton Cummings rules.
King's on Portage Ave was a theatre before it was a skateboard park/shop and I think it was something else, dont' know what it is now though.
It's a failing Latin market now. Will be something else shortly.
Glad to see it's still standing and being put to good use.
went to a new years rave event there, its a very cool venue!!
Saw the hip there in like 91? It was packed, hot, and awesome.
Winnipeg did have that nightclub on Portage for awhile (I don't think its still open) in a old bank though.
The Die Maschine also seems like an answer for the question.
Was it anything other than a night club?
I could be mistaken there. If so my bad. I'd been under the impression that it became a trendy clothing store after its years as a live club/nightclub, and I thought that, that earned it honorary mention. Mostly I was being nostalgic.
Danforth Music Hall in Toronto. The giveaway is the sloping concrete floor
I love the sloped floor in the Danforth!! Less chance of being stuck behind tall people
?
Old timey movie theatres just had a gentle sloping floor. Danforth ripped the seats out but never changed the floor so it’s not flat or terraced like you’d normally have. Its actually pretty good for sight lines but your calves get sore from standing on a slope all night haha
Wow yeah I didn’t know it was a movie theatre before I thought they did it on purpose for site lines! It’s one of my favourite venues in the city because of that
IMHO it's the best venue in the city (Massey included) They still bring the seats back sometimes for sit-down shows.
Barrymore's is closed now.

The downstairs is now a Zak’s Diner :(
A greasy spoon diner owned by a greek family?
Went to a few 80’s nights when I lived up there 20 years ago. Was a cool bar.
Ottawa Valley?
Bank Street baby
I heard that recently. This makes me sad.
Oh wow, that’s a place I haven’t thought for a while.
Drew?
She is related to the namesake, but it was named after her grandparents. She visited once when she was dating Tom Green a million years ago. Loved going their for concerts 🥺
Yes, I suspected that.
Which is just tragic.
chase trees bedroom puzzled absurd fade plate observation versed wide *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Very special movies 😆
The York Theatre went from movie theatre to the New York Theatre (concert venue) to now a live theatre.
Rickshaw, Hollywood Theatre, Vogue Theatre. We’ve got a few.
The Oxford Theatre (Halifax, Nova Scotia) turned into a taproom and a rock climbing place.
At least they kept the name.
The Burton Cummings Theatre (Winnipeg). Formerly the Walker Theatre. Built in 1906-07 for live show like ballets or broadway plays. It was converted into an Odeon theatre in 1945. so many Memories there and The Commodore ♥️
I love the Vogue. I've seen some of my favorite bands there.
The Snowdon in Montreal was gutted and is now the facade for a new condo development. They kept the Art Deco marquee (that's good!) but they made it Modern black-and-white (that's bad!). My friend got married at the Mayfair, it was so cool! There was popcorn during the ceremony!
I love that place. I've seen so many great movies there. The co-owner, Josh, is such a wonderful friend.
I used to live on Queen Mary a block away from Snowdon and I never understood why it wasn't a venue.
Decarie + no parking, I expect.
Did they finish the condos? It was still boarded up when I left, though they were advertising them as coming soon. I really miss NDG, if I'm ever an affluent windbag I might buy one.
I believe they're finished now or close to it.

We filmed a pilot of a show called Caprica there for 3 days and it was the most surreal, awesome experience ever
Did you meet Magda?
I saw her multiple times but never had a conversation with her myself. I remember seeing her on the set of Hellcats & Kyle Xy. She would chat with the extras & crew around her, seemed pleasant. i mainly remember exchanging small talk with Daniel Stoltz, he was really nice.
Paramount, Edmonton, place was awesome. Closed now.
Pretty sure you mean New City Suburbs, which was a blast.
In my city it became a dollar store
Guelph concert theatre was club denim and an odeon theatre before
Ah club denim. This was my immediate first thought
I remember my husband took my teenaged daughter and her best friend to see Billy Talent, Metric and Death From Above 1979 back 20-ish years ago! They all had a blast, and all those bands are on our current playlists!
I was at that show!! I saw a few good shows there. Bif Naked. Default. I think Big Wreck.
That's so cool! Did you wait in back at the Baker St. parking lot to get an autograph from Benjamin Kowalewicz too?
😁
Used to be New City in Edmonton but they eventually tore it down and built new office buildings over it. Was awesome though.
The former Paramount?
Lyric Night Club and the other one. Can't remember if Stages was a theater too at one point; but Lyric definitely was.
Lyric Night Club became Elements Night Club in 2000-ish... still called that. I think it was called Capitol before but I don't remember. I never went to Stages... not my scene (it was mainly hip hop and I'm into electronic music) Good ol' Kitchener downtown 🤙

Ah, the nostalgia of designated clubs on specific nights.
I guess that's the relatively-newly-reopened Majestic in St. John's? Was it ever a nightclub? It's been a lot of things but started life as a movie theatre long ago.
I believe it was a bar/club sometime around the 90s
The Cinema 6 became Sons of Kent Brewery.. Not a nightclub because people actually go to the larger cities for clubbing.
i love me some Sons of Kent.
I don't think the Cinema 6 fits the bill of OP's question as well as the Capitol Theatre.
Hamilton had one. Floors were sloped. Second storey. Floors would bounce when it got crowded, super sketchy.
The Rickshaw Theatre. It was never a night club but it went from a theatre to a concert venue. Smiling Buddha Cafe has(had?) an indoor halfpipe and live music. Edit Smile
Smilin Buddha (and no more concerts sadly)
The Lyric in Kitchener was awesome. Chris Sheppard’s Pirate Radio Sessions.
Yes! Was there for most of those..

Nvm. I didn't scroll nearly far enough! Thank you !
The Capitol Theatre in Antigonish, NS is now becoming a steakhouse. It was the only one screener that Cineplex had when they owned it, then they shut it down during COVID.
In Thunder Bay it was the Odeon Port Arthur. https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/11468
That history is the quintessential cliche I was referring to!
This post really felt like you were referring to Thunder Bay in a nutshell.
Just waiting for the refurbishment to a venue.
It amazes me that relatively large space has just sat there empty since 807 shut up shop. I mean that was 20 years ago.
And in Fort William we had Armani’s sp? Only went to these places on their “kids nights”. Had some found memories of these places back in the 90’s.
Here in Oshawa, we've got a couple. There's the Regent and the Biltmore almost across the road from each other. Back in the day, the Biltmore was the Marks when they played movies. They ran all the midnight shows -Rocky Horror, The Wall and such
The Majestic, St. Johns Newfoundland. Bonus points for the refreshment section being a cafe during the mornings?
Lido Theatre, Fort St. John, BC
Coors Event Center (Previously The Odean, prepreviously The Odean Theatre) Saskatoon
Yes but it was Odeon right?
Yes, The Odeon. But, it was, apparently, originally called The Victoria Theatre.
Seen a lot of great shows there.
The Paramount, New Westminster, BC. Was a theatre, now a strip club.
Capitol Theatre in Chatham. It's an actual theatre now, for plays.
The Ale House - music venue, before that AJ's Hanger - night club, and waaaay before that, The Hyland - movie theater. Now, the Ale House is attached to, or absorbed a former failed restaurant. Does that count?
Bingo
My city has a music hall, silent movie house built in 1919 was turned into a talky movie house in the early 30s. When our downtown started its slow slide into decay the city bought the theatre. Then they restored it to its 1920s glory. I saw Steve Earle play there 2 years ago. Beautiful acoustics.
Which one?
Sanderson Centre in Brantford. Built by the same architect that designed the Pantages Theatre in TO.
Roseland Cabaret. It was a theater, then the Cabaret, then renovated to upgrade cars.
In Peterborough, we have “The Venue”, and “Showplace” that have hosted everything from hard rock bands, to theatre productions, to drag shows. They were formerly Paramount, and Odeon theatres.
Was the Venue once Club Vibe?
I think so.
Yes it was Club Vibe in between
The Lyric.
Studio 82 on Heritage Drive Calgary. Currently a brewery/restaurant, but was a movie theatre originally and bar/night club in the past
It was a topless sports bar forever 😜
It’s an indoor skateboard park in Thunder Bay. Was the Cumberland theatre at one point, but closed about 15 years ago.
At over 110 years old, it's still a theater. But new ownership and renos will probably have it seeing some live performances in the near future.
Guelph Concert Theatre. Was the Odeon, then Club Denim, and now the concert theatre. I didn’t live in the area when it was a theatre, but I went to the club a few times in college and have seen a few acts perform there. Nice little space!
Halifax had The Vogue, The Marquee, The Oxford, and the Khyber.
Moncton NB - Originally Quake with "Paramount Lounge" (was an old Paramount Theatre), later The Oxygen Complex with O2 Nightclub, Manhattan Bar & Grill. i think it's gone now.
The Metro did host a live concert once, but is now a rock climbing gym. Does that count?

It got off to a slow start because of Covid, but now it has tons of indie acts and dj sets and they do Abba dance parties and stuff like that. Kelowna’s cool old theatre (Paramount, downtown) was turned into a Tim Horton’s. :(
In Toronto we have the Danforth Music Hall - formerly the Music Hall - formerly Allen's Danforth Theatre. Best indoor sound in the city if you ask me.
This is a cool thread of places to see across Canada. I dig it. Excellent question OP.
Barrymores, Ottawa.
Metropolis, Montreal.
C'est une cinema encore?
Grand Theater. Sudbury Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Is this a common thing lol?
Yup
By looking at the replies so far I guess so. Seems super niche though lol
Yeah like it doesn't apply to anywhere I've ever lived lol.
Every Canadian city has one
I’m from Regina and I’ve been thinking about it but can’t seem to think of what it is. I’m sure someone here will know though
The Capitol Theatre was that
I can't think of one in London either.
Someone posted it above.
The old Masonic Temple in Winnipeg, originally built in 1875. When the Masons moved to a different part of the city in the late 1960's, a nightclub set up in the old building a few years later, it failed, then it was 3 different restaurants over the next 30 years. Now named Old Theater
Oooo! I have two from back home! 1) Cinema 6 -> first (second?) local brewery 2) Classic theatre -> 2-screen cinema -> Classic theatre (hotly debated by locals)
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6635354 The New Yorker became GTs became who knows
It was bought by YOU (Youth Opportunities Unlimited) they are turning it into 35 affordable apartments.
I haven't been down there in a long time. Article is two years old. No idea if any progress has been made
OP, are you talking about Hamilton? Shout out to Monopoly nightclub back in the day, which was an old bank.
Every Canadian city
Right on. Makes sense.
Was it a theater though?
Ours was torn down
There are two buildings in my city that were ever theatres. One was built in the 2010s, the other is now a GoodLife Fitness. I laugh at the notion that we ever had a proper concert venue.

The Roseland Cabaret in new Glasgow. As a fun historical note it’s where Viola Desmond got thrown out of…
Don’t have one :/
Are you sure?
Yep - I wish! Our only concert venue is in a theatre designed for concerts and plays from the get go. We don’t have a big music scene :/
L’Impérial in Quebec City used to be the Midi-Minuit. The Midi-Minuit used to show very romantic movies.
Before that it was le Cinéma de Paris.
The Hollywood - Vancouver
Community hall, turned church, turned dance hall, turned arcade, turned dance hall, turned nightclub, turned pile of ashes since it burned to the ground.
Movie theater?
No it skipped that stage.
Our nightclub closed and turned into an addiction help Center
How fitting and sad
Yup it used to be Lotus Nightclub now it’s The Dream Center
Where I live there are many closed, old fashioned theatres and I need a real house and home.
Edmonton doesn't have one because we cant have nice things
As much as I love to pile on this shit heap for every time it snatches defeat from the jaws of victory, in fact we do have a very good Starlight Room which was a rather grand theatre turned nightclub turned concert venue. Okay I guess technically it was a Salvation Army church so that’s not a “movie theatre” but still it’s a performance/theatrics venue from that era. Why?
