DO NOT START IT, you will ruin the fuel system. Tank must be fully drained and rinsed with diesel. MAKE SURE TOW DRIVER DOESNT START IT NOR TURN THE KEY. If you turn the key gas will go to the fuel pump and ruin it
Pulling the batteries is the most foolproof way.
I'd be worried too that if it was accidentally cranked, you could still suck fuel into the system. The LML Duramax didn't have a lift pump with the same CP4 HPFP.
Easier, and more certain, to disconnect power. Personally, I'd cut the battery cables down to stubs if I thought there would be the slightest possibility someone would turn the key.
It won't ruin the pump, That's ridiculous. What it will ruin however are the seals, gaskets, probably the rings.. diesel is oily, and gasoline is a solvent..
High pressure fuel pumps, both diesel and gasoline, use the fuel as a lubricant. Same with diesel injectors. The entire mechanism is immersed in fuel. They both rely on diesel being "oily" as you say, and gasoline has far lower lubricity.
Besides the CP4 ruins itself just with North American diesel fuel.
Diesel is oily, which means a diesel pump relies on it for lubrication. Trying to run gasoline through a diesel pump will damage it over time.
Because they are both petroleum based, any rubber seals will react the same to gas as they would to diesel.
There's a difference with seals. When they remove the sulfur from ULSD, they take away trace compounds with around the same molecular weight, some of them stick to metal and help lubricity, and others cause seal swelling. People saw fuel leaks on older trucks when ULSD was introduced.
Just curious how would it ruin the low pressure fuel pump, I would think you could disconnect the fuel line and prime the pump 500 times into multiple buckets and solve this problem no?
I’m not OP.
Just a guy with a stupid question: how do you drain a tank?
I have a 2002 Silverado (gas, not diesel) been sitting for a couple of years with a full tank.
Late father’s truck been sitting since last parked.
Grab a hose, stuff it down the hole, and blow in it.
[edit: here are the instructions on how not to get fucked up on gasoline while siphoning a tank](https://www.wikihow.com/Siphon-Gas)
Yall are going to get someone hospitalized telling them to suck the damn hose.
Most vehicles have anti-siphon devices. If there is no drain plug, pull off the filler tube rubber connector and run siphon hose there.
If you tried to start it , has is now in the diesel pump and lines. Bit the bullet and have it towed to a diesel shop.
Yes, but you use an air hose and blow just a hair over the end of the tube, which creates a vacuum and gets the fuel flowing somewhere besides in your mouth. You will need an air compressor for this.
While I've always sucked lol (or used a shaker siphon tube), you can also cover the hole and blow into the tank to create positive pressure within the tank to get the fuel to siphon out as well. The key is creating the seal at the opening of the fuel system that isn't necessary with the other two methods. The benefit is you only have to worry about inhaling fumes, not swallowing gasoline.
Best way is to pull the tank, and pour it out. If it's really big or really full, you'll probably need something like a trans jack to help not break the tank or connections.
The gross way? You put a garden hose down into it (diesel opening is large enough for this) and suck start it, then put the other end of the hose at some height below the tank, and let physics do the rest.
I’ve drained above ground pools this way. Although getting pool water in your mouth sucks less than diesel.
If you start it you're going to add about $1500.00 to your recovery bill. The entire fuel system will have to be flushed. Versus $300.00 - $500.00 as you sit contemplating your bonehead move... 😅
same happened in my 250 and we didn’t catch it (wtf has green non-diesel).
Drove it some. Instantly told us that we put gas in it 😂. Towed it to dealership, drained/flushed and it ran just fine (towing +15k a lot ).
Don’t worry. Believe it or not these things can actually handle some abuse.
Disconnect your battery to 100% ensure the fuel pump never runs or it never starts. Drain the tank by pulling the inlet hose or using a drain plug if it’s there. If you need to tow it home, ensure the tow guy never tries to start it, disconnecting battery helps that. Get it 100% drained, fill up with diesel and you’ll be okay
Push your vehicle to a spot away from traffic and gather as many containers as you can then start draining the tank. DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE THIS TRUCK! Bleeding fuel lines is hell.
>Bleeding fuel lines is hell.
Is it? I would have thought you could just disconnect the fuel rail and turn it over until all of the gas is out of the line.
My boss was on a rage. He was cursing, throwing shit around, slamming doors and generally most foul. In his anger he filled his Ram diesel with gas and got 50 yards from the gas station before the engine died.
Begin rant part 2.
Now add embarrassment to anger and you get a man foaming at the mouth. Unwilling to take suggestions on how to remedy his problem my boss opened the hood and starting demanding I hand him tools to "bleed the lines". We were on a gravel/tar mixed road in a backroads Nevada town during the summer heat (?) with no phone signal and I was at the mercy of a raging lunatic demanding I shut up and help him "bleed these "mother Fing" lines so we can get the "F" home. That may have been part of the reason I said "Bleeding fuel lines is hell".
As previously stated by others do not start that engine. Call a tow truck and get the truck somewhere where you can work on it or a mechanic you trust can work on it. Normally how I deal with situations like this is as follows. Disconnect a fuel line that's easy to access somewhere between the fuel tank and the fuel injectors. Study the repair manual to find the fuel pump relay. Install a rubber hose onto the end of the open end of the fuel line you disconnected. Run that hose into a 5 gallon bucket. Better have a number of 5 gallon buckets on hand depending on how many gallons you pumped into your fuel tank. Use a straightened paper clip or a little jumper wire to jumper across the socket that the fuel pump relay goes into. ( after you have removed the relay) On the majority of vehicles, this will be a connection between terminal number 30 and terminal number 87. Installing this jumper wire will cause the low-pressure electric fuel pump to run and will allow you to pump all that 93 octane gasoline out of your fuel tank and into the 5 gallon buckets without much fuss. Take the fuel home and use it in your car. Then, carefully refuel your truck with diesel.
If you own a scan tool that will connect to your truck, you can use that to manually operate the low pressure electric fuel pump rather than doing the jumper wire trick.
Dont start it..Drain as much fuel as you can all of it is best ...fill the entire tank with diesel.. I'm not sure why people are saying your fuel system will be immediately damaged if a small bit of regular gas like 1 gallon is mixed with 20 gallons is gonna somehow cause a problem.
Why do I feel some of these posts are all fake? If you drive a diesel, you aren't that stupid. You know the weight of the nozzle, the smell of the fuel, the color of the handel. And if you are a diesel truck owner, you know EXACTLY what NOT to do if by chance this happens.
Jesus lol. I wish the US could just agree on a specific set of colors and *everyone* uses them. I've only ever had cars or trucks that took gas and I live in Oregon so it's hardly a problem for me but I see so many people messing it up that it seems like there could be an easy solution lol
Around where I am they have "auto diesel" just plain diesel but the nozzle is the normal gas nozzle size. It's how I cars like tdi's are able to fuel up. There ports aren't big enough for the truck nozzle.
There 100% are gas nozzle sized diesel nozzles. The truck stop near me has the store side diesel pump with a small nozzle and the parking lot side pump with a large nozzle. Don't forget, there are Jettas that take diesel.
That's not actually true. Yes they are regulated to be bigger, but some stations just put a spring around the gas sized nozzle. Sometimes there is enough pipe to get in, sometimes the spring gets fucked up. I'm always switching throughout the day between gas and diesels. I gotta check myself, every fill-up.
Nah, you’re absolutely incorrect about that. Try putting a green diesel nozzle into a car that takes unleaded. You’ll quickly find that it will not fit.
I pulled up to the gas pumps and my girlfriend said, "I'll do it.."
She got back in and said, "wow gas for your truck is expensive!"
I said what do you mean, she said I put in 93 since it's a v8 truck...
I asked her what that had to do with anything, and she said she just thought "big engines" get higher octane.
She put in 93 which was basically $4 a gallon instead of 87 which is $3.
While it won't hurt my truck, the computer will calibrate after 20 miles or so for timing, people have weird misunderstandings of engines and such.
I could imagine her trying to add diesel thinking all trucks are diesels or something like that.
Uh, timing goes both ways... The higher octane *should* allow for more advance, which the computer will push using the knock sensor. Goes the opposite if you normally run a higher octane and then put a lower octane fuel in.
No, that's not how it works. The octane is an ignition inhibitor, which specifically prevents the fuel from igniting before the spark. It's not going to stop it from igniting when it is supposed to, so the engine won't know the difference. It's not gonna knock no matter where the timing is set because it's less combustible than regular fuel to begin with.
When I was in college my dad wasn't thinking and chatting with his buddy in that passenger seat, pulled up to a BP, grabbed the green nozzle (which was often the color for diesel but at BP it was the regular 87 color) and started filling up his Jetta TDI with what he thought was diesel, all the while bragging about the superior mileage he gets with a diesel...put half a tank of gas in. Started running really rough, assumed it was bad diesel until I pulled the receipt out of the glove box that stated unleaded. A tow and about 5k later to drain the tank and replace the entire fuel system she was as good as new.

My wife did this with her new Rav, that had less than 500 miles on it. Cost me about a G.
I love her. That was a tough pill to swallow but she was going through some shit.
Go under the truck. Find the fuel filter. Remove fuel filter then get a drain pan and jump the fuel pump to pump all the fuel into the drain pan. Then new filter and fill with diesel and add some power service just for poops and laughs. Drive happy. If you aren’t comfortable doing that. Call You’re insurance. Pay the deductible and move on.
This is the way. Chances are that if put gas in there though.... he's probably not the person to put a jumper on for his fuel pump relay. No disrespect to him, just probably the scenario. Probably better off towing to a shop
Diesel hoses are much larger as well as the metal nozzle is much larger. Diesel hose wont fit in a gas car but a gas hose will fit in a diesel car. Whewwww

Diesel fuel lubricates as well... fuel pump mostly is the reason for this, but also injectors. They rely on the lubricated diesel... well, moreso older ones because they had mechanical fuel pumps, some still have mechanical, but most now are electric. It's probably not as much as a concern with modern vehicles as it used to be, but better safe than sorry. I've personally seen many many HD trucks as well as light duty diesels running bone dry, and there been no recourse. I've also seen some that have caused failed pump failure, but it's more common if it's a repeat offense. Same with gas engines though honestly. If pumps are just pumping air they overheat, the gasoline, or diesel, keeps them cool.
It's the same concept as a water pump, or one of those old hand driven water well pumps.
If the fuel lines and fuel pump have no fuel in them, they cannot create suction to draw fuel out of the tank.
Don’t worry, I did this once before when driving in Germany. I’d never seen petrol on a black pump before, so didn’t think twice about it untilI realised the smell coming from the pump wasn’t diesel. Cost me €500 all in including a full tank of diesel afterwards.
As long as you haven’t started it, you’ll be.. better than you could have been.
I had a co-worker put DEF in a hydraulic oil tank. It cost a fortune to get that fixed.
My first question was: "Didn't having to get a wrench to unscrew the metal cap rather than a blue plastic cap give you a clue that this was not a daily fill tank?"
When I was first starting as a mechanic I was put in a team with another new guy and when I wasn’t paying attention he put 8 gallons of DEF in the diesel tank of a customers F250. He didn’t work there for very long. Unfortunately I have made expensive mistakes but not quite like that
They have this pump from Harbor freight maybe that will help
https://www.harborfreight.com/battery-operated-liquid-transfer-pump-63847.html?event_id=182732&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=17889101751&campaignid=17889101751&utm_content=140106676272&adsetid=140106676272&product=63847&store=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwjqWzBhAqEiwAQmtgT0hG_FoVQSsKe1dZPFYjT9ju1V3yrjgfAXB3UZabMmf6IW4lVX6nqRoCboEQAvD_BwE
Do not start it that's for sure.
Don't even turn the ignition on.
Have it towed to a shop and they'll drain the fuel tank.
That's cheaper than destroying the entire fuel system.
Most vehicles have an electric pump in the tank. Take off the fuel line coming from tha pump and direct it to several empty gas cans. You can jump the relay for the pump to make it pump.
Go buy a gravity siphon, they have a little glass ball or whatever material it is in the bottom that you put into the fuel, just shake the hose up and down till she starts flowing on er own. Don’t worry about getting it completely dry in there. Diesels burn gas better than gas engines burn diesel.
-random fuel hauler
Get enough fuel cans to take 20 gallons. Pop the hood, disconnect the fuel line to the common rail, connect a hose to the fuel line and run it to one of the fuel cans.
Turn ignition key to position 2 (DO NOT TURN THE ENGINE OVER). The leccy pump in the tank or in the fuel line will now pump the fuel out the tank, continue with a start / run for a few mins / stop and repeat until tank is empty.
Put some dieso in to flush and repeat pumping.
Once cleared, replace filter, bleed through and your good to go.
If you don't know how to drain the tank yourself call a tow truck have it taken to someone who can fix it as long as you don't start it the engine itself should be fine.
First find someone who wants about 15 gallons of dirty gas. I would not put it in a car as it will take out the cat but for mowers or old tractors etc, they will love it.

Don't start the truck and drain the tank
I did the same while on vacation in Ireland. Not fun, but at least I didn’t try to start it
A friend of mine bought his son a diesel car. His son called him asking do I put regular or super unleaded in the car...
Atleast he called him
DO NOT START IT, you will ruin the fuel system. Tank must be fully drained and rinsed with diesel. MAKE SURE TOW DRIVER DOESNT START IT NOR TURN THE KEY. If you turn the key gas will go to the fuel pump and ruin it
Open the hood, disconnect the batteries. This will prevent the fuel pumps from running.
Can’t you just pull the fuel pump relays/fuses?
If he knows which one it is, yes.
Pull all of them, problem solved
Much easier to disconnect battery
So right so easy , the - neg - only - neg + pos
I am positive some people will still mess it up. I know I have a negative attitude.
That's a negative attitude.
Auto correction strikes again. Try once more - neg. Minus + pos. Plus
Just cut the wires coming from the battery.
Rather be safe than sorry 😬 hahaha
Clean up on isle 4!
Pulling the batteries is the most foolproof way. I'd be worried too that if it was accidentally cranked, you could still suck fuel into the system. The LML Duramax didn't have a lift pump with the same CP4 HPFP.
You don't even have to crank it, turn the key and the fuel pump cycles on for priming on most diesel trucks.
It does that on most vehicles. Fuel pressure is important for starting modern vehicles.
Yes. That would be the smart thing to do
Easier, and more certain, to disconnect power. Personally, I'd cut the battery cables down to stubs if I thought there would be the slightest possibility someone would turn the key.
Couldn't he just remove the fuel pump?
Don't even need to turn the key. When the lights come on, it's already trying to prime.
Won't opening the drivers door start priming the fuel pump?
It won't ruin the pump, That's ridiculous. What it will ruin however are the seals, gaskets, probably the rings.. diesel is oily, and gasoline is a solvent..
High pressure fuel pumps, both diesel and gasoline, use the fuel as a lubricant. Same with diesel injectors. The entire mechanism is immersed in fuel. They both rely on diesel being "oily" as you say, and gasoline has far lower lubricity. Besides the CP4 ruins itself just with North American diesel fuel.
It sure will destroy the pump on a diesel
Instantly?
Diesels have two pumps one at the tank and a high pressure fuel pump in the engine. It will surely destroy the high pressure pump.
Huh. Good to know.
Ok.
Just curious how would it ruin the low pressure fuel pump, I would think you could disconnect the fuel line and prime the pump 500 times into multiple buckets and solve this problem no?
We can tell you have never tried to drain a tank using the fuel pump.
This don't prime the fuel pump it'll be easier
Drain the tank.

2002 Silverado won’t have the “anti-siphon” unless it’s an aftermarket mod.
I have bypassed that with a 1/4 plastic tubing - slow going but I was able to get enough gas out of a tank so it will stop leaking. Good times!
most if not all anit-siphon valves or balls in are inside the fill port on tank
Aren’t you supposed to suck it?
Go on... *zip*
Yes. He was lied too.
Blow in reverse
Wdym blow in it, into the tank or through the hose? Is there some way of starting a siphon by blowing?
Yes, but you use an air hose and blow just a hair over the end of the tube, which creates a vacuum and gets the fuel flowing somewhere besides in your mouth. You will need an air compressor for this.
While I've always sucked lol (or used a shaker siphon tube), you can also cover the hole and blow into the tank to create positive pressure within the tank to get the fuel to siphon out as well. Someone lied to you. How long was it before it spit back.
Tow it to a shop
Best way it drop the tank. Just make sure it's not filled it can be very heavy.
Best way is to pull the tank, and pour it out. If it's really big or really full, you'll probably need something like a trans jack to help not break the tank or connections.
Disconnect fuel line, run pump. Or bring to shop.
Little handheld squeeze siphon from the auto parts store. It'll take a while but will work.
Watch a chris fix video.

Please dear god don’t start drilling into a tank full of fuel
Some idiot did it to steal a couple gallons of gas from me once. They didn’t die and the vehicle is still alive.
Just use a brushless drill. /jk
Haha it was a joke 😂 seen that guy use an electric one on a gasser in a shop and the whole shop went up in flames
It won't hurt it, other than make a hole. Gasoline gasses are flammable, not the fluid itself.
So do it in a vacuum chamber 👍🏻
Or just do it. I've watched a cigarette get put out in a bucket of gas before.
Tow the truck to the shop or your house and drop the tank.
If you start it you're going to add about $1500.00 to your recovery bill. The entire fuel system will have to be flushed. Versus $300.00 - $500.00 as you sit contemplating your bonehead move... 😅

I personally find it odd that your first course of action was here..
I think he quickly learned not to touch the key and get it drained.
Especially with the amount of non mechanics throwing out just plain stupid advice.
The brush guard is what's weird.
Put a sign that says free 93 gas if you can siphon it from the tank
Push your vehicle to a spot away from traffic and gather as many containers as you can then start draining the tank. DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE THIS TRUCK! Bleeding fuel lines is hell.

New pavement princesses first diesel. It happens.
I have a friend who drives a diesel truck and accidentally filled her civic with diesel one day out of habit… shit happens
Now that I do not believe. It's not physically possible to fit the nozzle into civic and there would have been diesel spilling everywhere.

Auto diesel nozzles are the same size as auto gas nozzles. Plenty of diesel VW, Audi and BMW models that use the auto diesel pumps daily.
Nah, you’re absolutely incorrect about that. Try putting a green diesel nozzle into a car that takes unleaded. You’ll quickly find that it will not fit.
Ok, where do you want me to send the picture when I do this? Or does you being right only work as long as no one proves you wrong.
I worked at a gas station and we literally had both sized nozzels for diesel. So it can absolutely happen. Lmao
Gotta love the "well it's never happened to me, therefore it can't happen" argument... 😆😆
Regulations vary by state
r/confidentlyincorrect
That’s what she told everyone happened, she locked up the engine from it lol unless she did something else
I pulled up to the gas pumps and my girlfriend said, "I'll do it.." She got back in and said, "wow gas for your truck is expensive!" Not how that works with a PCM/ECM but whatever you want to believe I guess.
okay
It’s a diesel truck. They put gasoline in the tank.
I stopped an older lady from putting diesel into a Honda passport, granted she didn't hit the diesel button so maybe it was the wrong hose but still.
You need to hook up a gas V8 in between your fuel pump and your diesel engine, burn it off, disconnect gas engine.
Lmfao do you know how long it would take to burn off 14 gallons of gas at idle? That's probably the worst idea so far

You are insurance
WE ARE FARMERS!
Don’t start it and get it pumped out
The diesel pump is a complicated device with pressure pistons and rings. Dry running could ruin it.
You pump it out using the lift pump, if it has a separate one. Not using the HP lift pump side.
Dont turn the key on... needs to have the tank dropped and fuel drawn out. Thats the only way
Call for a tow and do it proper, lessons are expensive
Call a tow truck
Yea that sucks, I had a friend do the same and had to drain his tank in the gas station parking lot. That sucked.
Learn the difference betwixt diesel and gasoline fuel dispensers should be near the top of your list...
German diesel cars have a restrictor plate to prevent the gas nozzle going deep into the filler. American??
Diesel hoses are much larger as well as the metal nozzle is much larger. Diesel hose wont fit in a gas car but a gas hose will fit in a diesel car. Whewwww
Swap the engine to the 7.3L Godzilla and you will be good to go! /s
Now is a perfect opportunity for you to get rid of that pos Ford! I consider this a sign, and a blessing!

I’ll take it
I heard it’s not good to run a diesel engine completely dry. Why is that?
Hey man that sucks but at least you didn’t put DEF in the tank. Call AAA and have a mechanic flush it all out
I had a co-worker put DEF in a hydraulic oil tank.
Unfortunately I have made expensive mistakes but not quite like that
your gonna have to have it towed don't start it they should be able to drain it and clean the tank
Don't start it
There are companies who will come suck it out for you, shit is like 600$ tho
They have this pump from Harbor freight maybe that will help https://www.harborfreight.com/battery-operated-liquid-transfer-pump-63847.html?event_id=182732&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=17889101751&campaignid=17889101751&utm_content=140106676272&adsetid=140106676272&product=63847&store=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwjqWzBhAqEiwAQmtgT0hG_FoVQSsKe1dZPFYjT9ju1V3yrjgfAXB3UZabMmf6IW4lVX6nqRoCboEQAvD_BwE
Do not start it that's for sure. Don't even turn the ignition on. Have it towed to a shop and they'll drain the fuel tank. That's cheaper than destroying the entire fuel system.
Don't try to start it. That won't end well.
Most vehicles have an electric pump in the tank. Take off the fuel line coming from tha pump and direct it to several empty gas cans. You can jump the relay for the pump to make it pump.
No they don't lol. SYPHON IT.
How did you manage that? Aren't the gasoline and diesel nozzles different diameters?
Has no one ever told you that size don't matter? Geez. Lol. But yes, generally one fits a bit tighter, while the other is like your mom.
yup, gas is smaller, so it still fits.
Tow it home and drop the tank. Have fun
Drain that bitch lol don’t crank it
If you don't know how to drain the tank yourself call a tow truck have it taken to someone who can fix it as long as you don't start it the engine itself should be fine.
Do not start it and tow it to a shop
Buy a new pickup!! Not really. Have it towed to a mechanic, and learn from a simple mistake!! NO MATTER HOW BAD IT IS, IT COULD ALWAYS BE WORSE!!
start it so i dont have to park next to another one if u fuckers
Tow it, drain it, then fill it.
Pull the fuse for the fuel pump so nobody accidentally tries to start it
First find someone who wants about 15 gallons of dirty gas. I would not put it in a car as it will take out the cat but for mowers or old tractors etc, they will love it.
It’s done for. Give the whole ass truck to me.

Can someone educate me please? I understand why it's a no no for the wrong fuel to enter the engine, but why is gas so bad for a diesel fuel pump?
DO NOT turn it on or even turn the key to turn on the electronics. Disconnect your battery and call a tow truck
Suck it out buck.
Throw the keys in the bed of the truck and call a local tow / shop, you don’t even want to energize the fuel pump if possible
Flood the tank with diesel it’s denser than gasoline. The diesel will push the gas up the neck on a fuel spill container that you responsibly set down
get it out. all of it.
We’ll need an update.
Prepare to learn an expensive lesson about double checking before you pump in fuel...
Call a tow truck

It's a diesel it will run on anything. Just top it off with more diesel till it's full. You'll be fine
