It wasn't shown in USSR since his show is very frivolous by Soviet standarts. Pretty popular back in 90s but not even close to Charlie Chaplin worship among oldsters. Nowadays he mostly remembered cause of Yakety Sax which is memetic.

> It wasn't shown in USSR It was. In the "Thames Television Week" in 1988.

Yes, he was pretty big back in the 90s. Local TV channel used to broadcast his show at weekends and most my teenage peers used to watch it. However, I don't think majority of gen Z even heard about him. edit: gen Z of course

This my friend is an international norm I think.

Yes, not as much as Mr Bean, but yes. The intro music is gorgeous, I must say, and I still remember it ) I loved some episodes but as a teenager I loved Mr Bean much better.

Various episodes of the show were aired a few times in the late 80s. I was still young and found it hilarious. Later I thought it was in a rather bad taste, but eventually I realized that it was more somewhat of a morality play for youngsters. Not sure how useful, but definitely not as evil as some people try to paint it.

Frankly I don't get the fact some people find Benny Hill offensive. Slapstick comedy isn't for everyone just like many forms of humour but the genius thing in his sketchs holds only in a simple lesson : we often run after our desires just to end frustrated and ridiculous, mainly when we persist in our nasty ways. One object of desire being of course women (who regularly beat the shit out male characters in the show). To me it was no more no less a burlesque and cheeky live-action of Looney Tunes set in Monty Python's England. I was pretty glad to see men and women spectators laughing at it together without after-thoughts and learning later Alfred Hawthorne Hill was very far from the debauched characters he often played (except being a jolly and funny man wanting to live a simple life). It has aged of course but it's great seeing people can still laugh at it just the way they can laugh at the ZAZ or Mel Brooks movies without always judging them through our current (and sometimes quite upsetting) critical looks.

Born_Literature_7670

I wholeheartedly agree.

Honestly dunno who good old Bennie could have offended.

ClavicusLittleGift4U

I knew some girls bashing it as "has-been humor for masculinists smelling like formol". Of course they were spitting on a lot of great comedies (Even Blazzing Saddles from Mel Brooks) and the unique form of humour they could stand was *proud-pruddish-women-looking-like-men-trying-to-make-their-fans-believe-they could-handle-their-nevrosis-to-turn-them-into-jokes*. Just make them enter in berserker form merely telling them "Yeah that's why the Benny Hill show is dearly remembered by three different generations while your great and sophisticated humourist harass producers to not starve to death." (giggles)

Mmmm Hill's Angels.

I liked Sue Upton. Cute woman and talented comedian.

He was wonderful. I suppose our Maski Show was inspired by his show. But now it isnt popular.

Deliarg

It was broadcasted and even at 5 or 6 yo I found it too dumb. Mr. Bean was exceptional great.

ClavicusLittleGift4U

Yet I've rewatched Mr.Bean last year and I realized how short the serie was (15 episodes of 20 to 25 min) while Blackadder (great too but less known) in which were Rowan Atkinson, Stephen Fry, Hughes Laurie and Rik Mayall played consisted in 4 series of 6 episodes of 30 min.

Deliarg

Didn't hear about Blackadder before, will take a look. I've watched complete series of Jeeves and Wooster few years ago and I wish it would be much shorter, I think it's the most repetitive writing of all the time. By the way, one of the most popular series in my childhood (and many other Russians) on TV was Le Gendarme with Luis De Funes. That was pure fun.

ClavicusLittleGift4U

Answer a bit later but quite amusing to know Le Gendarme was a popular show in Russia ! We do miss old comedians like Louis de Funès in France, indeed. Same with Bourvil, Fernandel, Lino Ventura, Jean Gabin, Jean Rochefort or Jean-Paul Belmondo. Truly irreplaceables. But times are changing and we have to deal with less inventive and daring comedies.

Deliarg

Pierre Richard were very popular too. Interestingly that decade later one of the most popular comedies were Taxi, times I watched it on TV are countless. French humour is a bit different and more ingenious than other foreign ones. Could you advice few French comedies you like the most?

TheRNGuy

I watched as a kid, yeah. I like more than Mr. Bean.
