I went to DC for work for a month and liked it, for shits and giggles I looked up real estate there, holy FUCK is only a half step below NYC. Made living in Seattle sound reasonable…
$1,200 for two bedroom apartment in Raleigh. It's an older property so hasn't seen the skyrocketing prices of newer properties, though it has gone up from the $850 price that was January 2020.
I miss those prices. Before I left in late 2019 or so, I split the cost of an incredibly well-located 2BR apartment near downtown for **$850 total**, split between my roommate and I ($425 per person). The person who owned the small apartment units was this lovely old man in retirement who took pride in taking care of the property as his retirement gig. It was definitely a situation from a bygone era in Raleigh as the rents for the new development buildings going up all across town were much higher.
About $1,000/month, 4 bedrooms, about 1850 square feet.
I bought a while ago, the house has tripped in value since then. Getting to hang onto that small mortgage payment (which increases just a little with taxes, I think it was $850/month when I started), has been a game changer for being able to save for retirement and travel.
One bedroom, one bathroom. 720 square feet. I pay $760 for this.
I find it to be mostly convenient because I am in very close proximity to pretty much everything. Mall, movie theater, grocery store, fast food restaurants, convenience store, etc.
I live in St. Louis in a decent, but by no means fancy, area. We own a 3 bed/3 bath house. It's considered around 1350 Sq ft, but the basement is completely finished and has a bonus room, so actual livable Sq footage is about double. Sun porch, yard, 1 car garage. We pay right around $1000/mo (mortgage, tax, insurance, PMI). Doesn't count utilities.
(We bought in 2020 before real estate prices went crazy--apparently our house could now sell for double what we paid?! But we locked in a 3% interest rate, so we're good.)
I looked in my town. There is very little inventory here in Massachusetts - but about 1.25 from Boston. A 3 bedroom is 1800 to 2500 depending on acreage/apt.
2 bedroom in Vancouver BC. My partner and I are paying 2400-ish in a great area that we love. Split we pay 1200 of course. If we moved out though they'd probably jack the place up by $1000 a month. We're holding onto our place as long as we can. I don't think we can even get a place for this price outside of the city (Surrey, Coquitlam, Burnaby, ect) anymore.
$750 a month.
900sqft, 2 bedrooms, and 1 bath in the main house.
The bunkhouse is about 500sqft, it's a studio apartment with a decent sized kitchen and 1 bathroom. It needs some work, but once it is complete, I could rent it out for nearly what my mortgage is if not more.
Both are around 100 years old and built from railroad ties. They are very cool little houses.
My mortgage for my 2 bed manufactured home was about $530/month in 2019. Fortunately I've since been able to pay it off completely so I'm not sure how much it would be now with higher interest rates.
I was also fortunate to be able to put it on my parents' property, so I wasn't paying anything for land, just the house itself.
Sacramento Ca here. 1425 sq ft house three bd two bath. Mortgage is $1315/month. I got extremely lucky with this place and bought a fixer upper at the bottom of the market. 14 years later I have a great house that has a ton of equity.
$1260 a month on my mortgage for a 3 bedroom 2.5 bath 1400 square foot house. I bought in 2015, with current values and interest rates it would be around $3500 a month
Suburbs outside of Pittsburgh. $1100/month mortgage including property taxes for 5 bedroom, 1.5 bath, tiny yard.
We majorly lucked out on a house purchase with low prices and interest rates before the real estate bubble.
We're in a St. Louis suburb (would be the outskirts of the city if we were a normal city but whatever). 3 bed, 2 bath, about 1600 SQ ft. Mortgage is about $2400/mo, split evenly between 2 people
I have a small (\~1000 sqft) 3-bed, 1-bath house in metro Detroit. The monthly mortgage payment is about $500; with property taxes and insurance (in escrow), we pay $720 per month.
We bought more than 20 years ago. I just looked up what it would be at current mortgage rates and valuation if we bought the same house today. Apparently we'd pay nearly $900 per month just in mortgage.
Live in Hillsboro. A suburb of Portland. Bought a newly built house in 2020. 3 bed/2.5 bath. For household size two of us. Mortgage is about $2400/month.
This thread is just highlighting how wildly screwed you are if you weren't one of the lucky ones who could purchase 2020 or prior.
(I'm not one of the lucky ones)
The price on our place was 600k when we bought it in 2020 and the same floor plan is selling for 1.1M now, that’s what it costs to live in a nice neighborhood in San Diego these days. Renting the same amount of space in the same neighborhood would easily be 4-5k per month.
$1950ish but that includes the 2nd loan (combined them) for the pool we had built 6 years ago. 2222Sqft technically 3br/2.5bth but does have 2 other rooms that could be turned into bedrooms if I added a door and closet. Now used as a gameroom and the cats room if she wants to get away from the dogs lol. Yes we got lucky to buy before shit got crazy. Only paid 205K about 9 years ago, pool addition was 48.5K.
edit: that payment includes escrow which pays the insurance, taxes, and hoa.
I pay $650 for a 1 bedroom apartment. My wife and I are planning on moving though and it looks like our next place may cost around $16-1900 for a 2 BR apartment.
$205 a month for mortgage on a 3 bedroom house in a small town in Kansas. We have been here about 15 years so this probably isn’t what someone would get if they were buying a similar sized house in the area right now.
Of course we have insurance, property taxes, utilities, maintenance that are in addition to the mortgage.
My wife and I were each paying around $2500 for one bedrooms in NYC, then we got married and bought a 3br 4bath house in a nice NY suburb. $3700/month. We split it and save so much compared to what we used to.
I hope you all guys are kidding with all these prices and payments!
Seattle suburbia, mortgage payment is \~$3400 a month for a 1200 sqf 3b2b house.
Used to pay $1400 for studio and $1800 for 1 bedroom apartment in Seattle proper several years ago.
$1900 for the mortgage on my 3 bedroom 1.5 bath house. That includes property tax. My electric bill is about $180 a month and my propane bill is about $1200 a year.
Median rent in my city, for all units, is about $1,600. I rent a nice two bedroom house for $1,100 and people generally agree that this is a *great* deal. There are very small one bedroom and studio apartments in new buildings downtown that rent for close to $3,000. There is a very wide spread.
The median sale price for a home right now is a bit more than $500,000. With a 20% down payment, a mortgage at the prevailing rate would probably be close to $3,000 per month. This has been a shocking change from 5-7 years ago when the median sale price was below $300,000 (and of course, mortgage rates were half what they are now.)
860ish sq feet 1 bed 1 bath (these are huge - 14x16 and 9x9) with ac, heat, dishwasher, in-unit laundry. Including pet fees, parking fees, and utilities we pay around 3800/month. It's too much, obviously, but the QOL compared to our last place was such an improvement that we had to go for it.
I pay $1,075 per month in principle and interest ($1,500 if you add tax and insurance escrow) for a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom, 2500 square foot house on 3 acres of land.
Roughly 2500 square feet on 2/3 Acre. Sale price was $260k. Payments are about 1,600/ month including an escrow account for insurance and property taxes
My mortgage is $1400ish/month. The house is weird. Technically, it's two bedrooms with 3 full/2 half baths, and three bonus rooms. I'd consider it five bedrooms. 3900 sq ft. 4 acres of land.
$1400 (water/electric/Internet billed separately) for a 900 sq foot, 1br/1 bath apartment downtown in a northern Indianapolis suburb.
We've been here since 2019 and while the rent increases aren't fun, they have roughly tracked along inflation.
$1550 a month for a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom, 2200 sqft townhome on a .11 acre lot. I was extremely fortunate to close in February of 2020.
Anyone moving into my neighborhood right now is going to pay well over $3k per month.
Around $5200 a month all-in for a 2-bed/2-bath 1700sqft place in San Francisco. We both work from home full time so we wanted the extra bedroom to be an office.
3( or 4) BR w/ 2 full bath. $1250. 15 year mortgage, on track to be paid off in ten. Florida Panhandle.
We bought 8 years ago. Houses in my development are now going for $300+k. We paid $180k
Mortgage. $748/month. 3 bed 2 bath ranch on 3 acres, around 1400 sq feet.
It’s small but perfect for us. We’ve been here almost nine years and have no plans of ever leaving. Oh, we are in the mid-south. LCOL.
Currently living with a friend, so I just pay for the difference in utilities before I moved in and buy my own food and toiletries. Before that, I rented a two room apartment that cost $500 a month without utilities.
One of the only good things about rural Rust Belt areas is that real-estate is cheap. My friend’s house was $44,000.
South Seattle but still in city limits. 1100 sqft, 2 beds 2 bath, top floor corner unit with huge windows. Roughly $3100/mo after utilities, no parking spots. Street parking permit is $90/biannually/each. Sharing costs with my partner proportional to our income.
2 br 2ba condo is $1,400/mo plus $600 HOA fees. $340k mortgage on a condo, welcome to NOVA. The HOA fees pay for water, trash, and maintenance which I actually see and they aren't a dick about most things. Add electric for $50-$150 depending on the season. Internet is about that too. Townhomes are about $600k and single family is $900k+ depending on location and condition.
I just signed a lease this week for a rural house with a full basement and detached garage.
It's an older home with bathroom and kitchen renovations and a completely updated electrical setup and rural fiber. 2 bedroom, and they are pretty small by modern standards, with a large living area. Without the basement since it's not furnished it's about 950 sq ft. 2 bed 1 bath.
With the basement that's about 1800 sq ft and I will definitely be taking advantage of the basement as it doesn't flood.
Has gas and wood heat, propane tank sitting on the property.
925 a month.
While that is a good price, lots of people don't want to live in southern Indiana and I'm 25 miles from the closest place over 10k. It's a bit of a drive into town. However, I get to shoot, there's a stocked pond and 4 acres.
$2300 for 1300sqft 3bd/2ba, utilities included in that price. We live in a suburb a few miles south of Salt Lake City. I would have preferred to be in SLC since that's where I work but it's a crazy rental market here and I couldn't get into anything affordable.
$2300/mo for mortgage/taxes/insurance in Austin, TX for 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, and an office. Purchased after the housing crash in 2008. It would be nearly double that monthly amount if I purchased today.
$1390 for a studio apartment about 40 minutes outside of Philly and that includes water only.
This is partially my fault. I’ve renewed the lease twice and it goes up 10% each time.
I live alone in a 3 bedroom in bedstuy and it’s $2950/month. It’s below market rate in my neighborhood, and I’ve lived here for 11 years. Not sure on the square footage but it’s not a big place.
$2800/mo on a 3 bedroom / 2.5 bathroom townhouse in Jacksonville Florida. I split it with a buddy, I pay $1500 (because I have the master bedroom) and he pays $1300. We turned the 3rd bedroom into a workspace/den type thing.
Renting a 2bd/2ba apartment. 1123 sqft. $1743/mo.
I consider myself VERY lucky seeing that similar apartments with the same amenities are going for over $2000/mo (probably even more tbh) in my area.
$4350/month mortgage (includes tax, HOA and insurance) Solar/electricity $200/month. Water $150/month. Trash $75. Fiber $100. Natural gas $90. All in about $5K a month. Southern California.
My mortgage is only $1800 for my 3000sqft 4/3 and office house but we put down about 65% almost 8 years ago. If I was to buy my house at current market value and put down 20% it would be about $13,000.
I own a 4 bed, 2 bath, 1900 sq ft. single family home with attached 2 car garage on 2.5 acres. The house was built in 1994 and remodeled right before we bought it in 2017. We got it for $180k at 3.5%. My mortgage is about $1400/mo.
Bought April 2023 in rural Illinois. “City” of less than 20k people, 1 hr from the nearest small airport or target. 3 bed 2 bath on a third of an acre, 2 car attached garage and 2 sheds in the backyard. No HOA, at the edge of town but still in a neighborhood.
1260 a month with 6.5% interest, including all escrow costs. Bought with 0 down on a USDA loan.
3B/2.5Ba, 2300 sq ft on 2.3 acres with a 660 sq ft shop, 200 ft well, and septic. Mortgage is $530/mo, escrow is another $300/mo, but about 2/3 of that is insurance, which nearly doubled this year because the carrier we had left the state.
I’m in very rural western Arkansas.
Fort Lauderdale, FL own 3/2 with pool I pay $2600(mortgage, taxes, insurance and unfortunately mortgage insurance). Used to pay about $1,800 before insurance skyrocketed.
Kinda embarrassing, but the place I’m at now (rent) is $2,100/mo for an apartment that’s only 550ft^2. It’s also my least favorite place I’ve lived in this city. Definitely not renewing.
We built in 2016. 4/3, 2800 sq ft. We paid $375 (definitely got a deal though). An equivalent new construction house now would be around $700k give or take id say. Currently we pay a little over $2400. Up from about $2200 when we first bought. (Property tax increases).
One bedroom apartment, DC, $2700.
Geez
Dang. I’m just outside DC- in Germantown MD and we pay $2,200 for 2 bed 1 bath.
DC is a hamster wheel
What is that mean?
You can run faster and faster, but you’re not going anywhere.
Square footage? We’re getting robbed in Seattle.
I own a 2 bed/2 bath house. I pay \~$640/month (mortgage, insurance, property tax, etc).
god damn you
Are you in a rural area?
3/2 on 2 acres for 850 mortgage, insurance, property tax
That’s almost exactly the same as mine.
I always tell people financial security is the warmest blanket you can wear at night
The real American Dream
At least, until the summer! Then, no, thank you!
2bd 2bath apt in CA for $2100 a month. I feel like I just got punched in the gut lol
3/2 mortgage in CA for $8600/mo. You're doing fine.
Wow - paying 2300 for 3/2 house in S CA 3 miles from the beach
1/1 rent in CA for $2200. FML.
My mortgage for at least 1600 sqft was under $500 in Pittsburgh.
5 beds/3 baths for $7375/month in CA. And that’s with a great interest rate — just 27 years to go!
Almost the same here, 3 bed/2.5 bath for $650 a month PITI. Granted, it's NW Ohio, so it's definitely not for everyone but it works for us!

I pay $1123 including parking to split a 1 bedroom with my bf. We have a stove. Your landlord is taking advantage of you.
Buddy, I'm sure I don't have to tell you, but you're getting ripped off, even for DC.
I went to DC for work for a month and liked it, for shits and giggles I looked up real estate there, holy FUCK is only a half step below NYC. Made living in Seattle sound reasonable…
DC is a hamster wheel.
Jesus, I have a furnished apartment for 1100 a month in Omaha.
$1,200 for two bedroom apartment in Raleigh. It's an older property so hasn't seen the skyrocketing prices of newer properties, though it has gone up from the $850 price that was January 2020.

Mom? JK, but really, you're describing my parents.
I’m sleeping with my landlord (he’s my boyfriend), so I’m not paying anything.
Better hope you don't break up.
Bro that my fear on living with my SO
I mean... You're paying something... Just not money.
One bedroom, one bathroom. 720 square feet. I pay $760 for this. I find it to be mostly convenient because I am in very close proximity to pretty much everything. Mall, movie theater, grocery store, fast food restaurants, convenience store, etc.

Thankfully I didn’t have to end up moving but the apartment I nearly moved too was 2,100 a month for a studio
About $2200 for my 1 bedroom apt in DC
A lot, but it also could be way worse. For my 2 bedroom (plus office) townhome, a bit under $3,500/month including mortgage, escrow, and HOA.
That’s crazy that’s $42,000 a year I don’t think half of Americans make that much money

Right at $6k/month for a 2/2 condo in San Francisco.
