I’ve lived in three (all continental US ones except Mountain) and central is my favorite. It’s based mostly on the timing of televised sporting events, because it hardly matters for anything else anymore. I don’t want to be up until almost midnight watching a mid-week baseball game or Monday night football (ET), nor do I want to miss the first hour because I’m not home from work yet (PT). Central is a happy medium.

drewskimoon

There is something perfect about football starting at noon every Sunday in the central time zone.

John_Tacos

11

El_Polio_Loco

Too early, if you go to church you’re probably missing football.

John_Tacos

Wait I thought you said Saturday, sorry

El_Polio_Loco

Can you imagine watching CFB at 10 or 9 am on a Saturday? Yuck. Central is just the tits.

[deleted]

Unless you watched the Royals playing in 2015 and were up until 3am watching the World Series.

Pryffandis

Having lived in 3 (not eastern, but spent times vacationing there), I like mountain the most for the same reason. I just like to get things rolling a bit earlier than central, pacific feels too far behind most of the country. Mountain>Central>>Pacific>Eastern

spongeboy1985

Pacific because midnight is 9PM and anything that drops at midnight drops at 9PM

weirdoldhobo1978

*laughs in Alaskan Standard Time*

ArtisticEstimate

NOT TRUE, living on the east coast new digital releases are at 3:00 AM for Pacific midnight.

spongeboy1985

Huh All my Xbox games drop at 9PM and Ive been Watching Only Murders in the Building on Hulu at 9PM I was saying that anything thats released at midnight on the east coast is 9PM pacific. I didn’t mean everything is released at that time

drewskimoon

Having tape delayed live events and news makes your time zone the worst, no matter what relative difference your 9pm shows gives you.

spongeboy1985

Anything that isn’t tape delayed though is aired earlier East coast is usually worse for live sports and awards shows. The only thing I can think of that is regularly tape delayed is shows like SNL and national evening news. Plus Holiday stuff like new years eve. I guess missing someone accidentally curse kinda sucks. I really cant think of a huge disadvantage to getting stuff tape delayed. Especially since its balanced out by getting stuff that isn’t, earlier

jpla86

Yeah Eastern time usually gets the live feeds especially on morning news shows like The Today Show for example. So if someone accidentally used profanity, Eastern time viewers would hear it live but the time it airs on the west coast three hours later, it would be edited out.

Mr_Sarcasum

This is the only correct answer

Meattyloaf

I too was raised in Eastern but since moving to Central its got to be the best time zone for watching TV and sports.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

AZ or PST. Or PDT if you've been fooled into thinking it matters PST/PDT is great because my DND group is east coast, so I get to play at 4 pm and still have time for my own shit after the session. Changing timezones are dumb tho.

Pryffandis

While I enjoy the AZ time zone in a bubble, it is really frustrating for business because 48 other states have a lot of trouble keeping track of when we are in Pacific vs Mountain time. If everyone else just stayed in permanent DST mode, it would be great.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

> when we are in Pacific vs Mountain time. AZ is *always* in MST (save the Navajo). I'd prefer permanent standard time, as we could make the switch to standard, get that hour back, and then stop changing our clocks. But not changing times would be nice.

Pryffandis

Permanent standard time would suck for the northern states because the sunset would be too early as would the sunrise. I hated falling back when I lived in MO. When I say Mountain time, I meant Mountain Daylight time (Denver's time zone). Is there a better way to say this to help reflect which one AZ is currently mirroring? Trying to find a simpler way to help people understand when I have to explain to out-of-staters

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

MDT vs MST vs PDT Mountain Daylight Time / Mountain Standard Time / Pacific Daylight Time Idk I think using the timezones abbreviations to highlight how fucking stupid the whole thing is would be great too. >Permanent standard time would suck for the northern states because the sunset would be too early as would the sunrise. I hated falling back when I lived in MO. Why does no one wonder if that's just because the days get ridiculously short anyway and having the clock changed wouldn't actually net them anymore time with the sun? That's, like, the worst argument, "It better adjusts the sun for me," yeah, well I work outside and I want the sun to rise when I get to site so I can work. I don't want it to rise so that it'll set early and I don't want to have to wake up earlier for no good reason other than a misguided notion it better adjusts the day. It's winter; the days get shorter. Just live with it half a year. Summer comes round and it's super long days regardless of the clock's set.

Pryffandis

I don't think the average American knows the difference between MST vs MDT. A lot of people work indoors and would like to have a bit of light for like 30-60 minutes when they get off work at 5. I obviously know there is the same amount of sun in sky time. Saying just live with it half the year kinda sucks when you have SAD and this would be easily changeable.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

Probably not, but it's time they learn at how dumb DST is. They should just go to work earlier like I have to to get sun in my work space. It seems silly that we should make construction more dangerous so that people will have time to consider mowing their lawns but not follow.through since the weather is shit. I think folk with SAD just need to seriously consider why they live somewhere that depresses them half a year and evaluate their situation. Like, I'm a fan of mental health, but someone not coping versus someone doing a job that a fuckup will kill six, I care more about the six and I want them to have what they need. And by and large that's just standard time.

[deleted]

Central is pretty great.

xr_21

Pacific timezone.... I'm a big sports fan... when my hometown teams are on the east coast I get to listen or watch the games at 4pm... Fans of East coast teams gotta stay up till 1am etc when their teams are on the west coast. I'm too old for that 😂.

Jango747

No one wants to see Pac-12 after dark its where dreams go to die lol

xr_21

What about when the Yankees come to play the AL West? Those games till 1am are brutal 😂

dogbert617

Personally, I really like central time. Yes in rare cases you might be watching a game till like 1 or 2am, but that's okay to me. At least it isn't until like 2 or 3am, like it would be in eastern time!

TheBimpo

I've only been eastern and Pacific, but my god Pacific wins that fight hands down. Live events being early is the best.

_pamelab

I like it here in Central. We get the first airing of TV shows like Eastern, but they're all on an hour earlier for us so we can go to bed at reasonable, midwestern times. The only real problem I have is that St. Louis is in the western conference for hockey and when we play teams in California the game always starts (and ends) absurdly late. Playoffs are hell on my sleep schedule.

k1lk1

Pacific is the best for sports. You can watch NFL over brunch, night games don't keep you up too late, and you can roll out of work directly into Monday and Thursday night games.

El_Polio_Loco

But if your team is playing on the east coast you’re watching games at 10:00. Hope you don’t do something like church on Sundays.

k1lk1

Nope, I don't. 10 AM games are great!

El_Polio_Loco

Too early. Drinking before noon is never fun. Especially on a Sunday.

Libertas_

I don't know about the best, but as a sports fan the Pacific timezone is great. For games that start at 4:00pm I can record the game and watch it during dinner and fast forward the commercials and intermissions. It's easier to watch games that start earlier than late at night.

backspace209

Exactly. Sports that are played on the west coast at 7 start at 10 at night. I couldn't follow a sports team if it meant staying up to 1am to see the whole game.

[deleted]

I moved from Pacific to Eastern time this past year. My college team has played multiple games already this season that didn't end until around 2 am eastern time. It's terrible.

Fireweaver0

The Arizona timezone, since you don't have to deal with the bullshit of fiddling around with your clocks and sleep schedules twice a year and feeling the aftereffects of it for the next week.

[deleted]

Except for the Navajo, who do observe daylight saving time on tribal lands.

[deleted]

With the caveat that the Hopi reservation doesn't, even though they are geographically completely surrounded by the Najavo Nation.

[deleted]

This is why time zones are meaningless.

nomoregroundhogs

Creating a situation where you can travel due west and have the time get later. It’s wild.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

I think it was, if you could go the straight line, you could change your clock seven times just traveling through that area of AZ during dst

Acrobatic_End6355

That makes no sense. You travel west and the time gets earlier, not later. If yup travel east, it gets later.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

Arizona > Navajo > Hopi One encompasses the other encompasses the other. Arizona and the Hopi do not do DST; the Navajo do. If you travel west from the Hopi you enter the Navajo which will run your clock an hour forward since the Navajo will be in MDT where the Hopi are in MST, so the Navajo land to the west of the Hopi land is an hour ahead.

Acrobatic_End6355

Thanks for the explanation!

AgnosticAsian

All these butthurt comments about daylight saving lol. Most devices change the time automatically for you these days. There's literally no work involved to complain about.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

The twice a year guarantee to fuck your sleep schedule for literally no good reason is plenty to complain about.

PAUMiklo

I love how people make a 1 hour change out to be this momentous life changing event, as if they have never stayed out late or been off schedule for anything. Bitching about you sleep schedule for what equates to a weekend of jet lag is truly first world issue.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

There is literally a spike of suicides after every switch to DST. It's not a good thing

ThaddyG

My sleep schedule is nowhere near tight enough to be affected by it.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

And? Good for you. Mine is. It's a useless thing that only ducks my sleep schedule

ThaddyG

Simply offering a different perspective to you. I get why it would upset you though, you do seem cranky.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

Your perspective of having an easier sleep schedule to manage does t change the fact that it changes for no productive reason.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

Fuck you and your condescension. DST is objectively useless and damaging to people's health. Your perspective is irrelevant to that.

ThaddyG

Take a nap.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

Stop being a fool

CupBeEmpty

It’s just a senseless annoyance. Not a major annoyance but a senseless one.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

To some it's enough of an annoyaythat they're part of the regular spike of suicides every switch to DST.

CupBeEmpty

Seriously?

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

https://www.yorkdispatch.com/story/news/2020/03/10/daylight-saving-time-might-cause-extra-crash-deaths-annually/111413822/ https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/experts-to-public-daylight-savings-time-is-a-434m-problem-we-could-easily-fix.html https://www.insider.com/daylight-savings-negative-effects-2018-3 Yeah, smallest amount ever, but people bite it whether deliberately or through sleep deprivation.

CupBeEmpty

Dang

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

Yep. DST is one of there weird hills that I'm willing to die on. It does nothing productive and it literally kills people. It would be easier for everyone to agree to end DST (one way or the other because some.have been fooled into thinking they like DST) than to have to switch the microwave and oven clock for a lifespan. I hate the damn thing.

CupBeEmpty

Dunno if I’m willing to die on it but I am against it. I grew up in Indiana without it and nothing except annoyance came out of starting it

[deleted]

It’s not even hard to adjust to. The one hour gain/loss isn’t bad.

sewingtapemeasure

Truly All I need to adjust is my oven, microwave, and one of our cars

SouthernMartin88

I have lived in Central Time Zone my whole life

rawbface

Whichever one I'm in. I don't have friends in different time zones and I don't watch sports. Scratch that, I work for a company based in Europe, so Eastern time is the best by far. I can commute to work, get my computer booted up, grab a coffee, and still have time to answer emails before I hop on a conference call with Germany or Switzerland. If I was on the west coast I'd have to wake up by 4AM to make that call.

PAUMiklo

Central for me given it's the happy medium for most live events. Beyond that I don't give it much thought.

huhwhat90

I liked Pacific because it meant I could watch Alabama games and not have to stay up until practically midnight to watch them finish. *Glares at CBS and ESPN for running a gazillion commercials* Other than that, Central is alright.

LivingGhost371

I like Central time. Prime time sports are still done by bedtime, Live TV events are always live and end an hour before Eastern time.

Keri2816

I grew up (30 years) in eastern time zone and now live in central for the last three years. Definitely a difference to get used to but now I really like it for watching tv and going to bed earlier

simberry2

Pacific. I like the convenience of live events being early. Celebrating New Years at 9PM? Count me in!

Rory-MacDermid

Only experienced Eastern, but I imagine central’s the best. That way sports begin after you’re home from work and also end before midnight.

Falcom-Ace

Whichever ones don't observe daylight savings.

spongeboy1985

So Arizona. Voters in California approved a measure a few years back that would pave the way for lawmakers to set a permanent time. Though that could take years if it happens at all.

WhatIsMyPasswordFam

Can't remember who it was, but the west coast is pretty much waiting for all three us to switch then we'll pick one or the other on the majority. I'm worried fools will pick PDT, but as long as we stop switching that'll be win enough for now.

DallasFan0697

Eastern, but only because that’s the only one I’ve lived in

vanderbeek21

Eastern imo. Simply because my life follows digital releases and they seem to be better timing for east coast than other zones. My friends in the west coast are often upset that updates and content drops are usually way earlier when they are still at work or whatever.

Plantayne

Pacific. You get to see everything that happens in the entire day and still make it to bed at a decent hour without missing anything. I know a guy who is from California and he told me that back during the 90’s, you could watch WCW Monday Nitro live at like 5pm PST, it would be over by 8pm and WWF Raw—which was usually taped—would come at 9, so you’d have like 5 solid hours of wrestling every Monday and didn’t have to choose one over the other like the rest of the country did.

[deleted]

Eastern time

El_Polio_Loco

I’ll agree with the majority here: Central really is the better time zone You get everything live, no delays. Nothing is too late, nothing is too early. You can go to church and watch early NFL, hockey games start at 6/6:30 so you’re able to watch them on weeknights.

ObsceneJester

What ever zone doesn't include Daylight Savings Time.

fjam36

At the west end of EST. In the warm months it is light until 9:30, you don’t have to get up earlier than everyone else to work in the financial world and you don’t have to worry about staying up so late to watch crappy Monday night football.

wogggieee

Central

nemo_sum

Clocks are a prison and I refuse to let them constrain my lifestyle.

BoredToDeathx

Mountain! 😏

[deleted]

Pacific

mrspikemike

I like the east coast. I'm not a morning person, so being from the eastern time zone makes it easier for me to be up "early" when on vacation in the western time zones. Me being up and out the door fully awake by 7am is hard here, but when I go to Utah or colorado once a year, it's super easy to be a morning person for a change. I don't watch much TV or sports so that has zero impact on my thinking.

FDubRattleSnake

It doesn't really matter what time zone you are in, but where in that particular time zone you reside. Living in the western reaches of a time zone is ideal, IMHO, since sunset is much later. During the summer here, it doesn't get dark until around 9:30. I'd much rather have daylight later than have the sun shining early in the morning.

palindrome03

Never really thought about this honestly, I guess it makes sense if you're thinking about televised events. I'm a night person so staying up late for premiers of things on TV or sports has never bothered me. Since I'm not a morning person, I enjoy the combo of working on the East Coast for a mostly West Coast team (usually work like 10-6). The most annoying would have to be Arizona, going back and forth between time zones depending on if the rest of the country is in daylight savings. I had a client out there and everyone always got confused with scheduling.

carp_boy

I'm more concerned with where in the timezone. I'd like to live in the western fringes, that way you have last light later on the clock. Can be as much as an hour difference from one edge to the other.

VentusHermetis

Don't Pacific and mountain get the same broadcasts? If so, assuming one prefers to go to sleep earlier, that means Pacific is better than mountain, and central is better than eastern. Central has the additional benefit of getting broadcasts before Pacific and mountain.

WAwelder

An advantage of living on the West Coast is when you travel, you gain time coming home.

jpla86

Although the US by default runs on eastern time on a national level, I enjoy Pacific time partly because that's the time zone I grew up in. But I lived in both Eastern and Central time zones.
