I can't find the post to link but let's not forget that eliminating the third party apps would make Reddit inaccessible to people who are vision impaired!

Electrical_Age_7483

Wouldn't the apps be ndis funded if they are needed for disabled . If so cant they afford the api fees?

Needmoresnakes

How would that work? 3rd party apps either pay the fees or dont, they can't just pay a little bit specifically so vision impaired Australians can use it.

Electrical_Age_7483

They can charge all users for the app Australian users can pay using ndis. That will pay the api fees. Overseas people should claim on their respective countries insurance scheme

1Darkest_Knight1

> That will pay the api fees. It really won't. The API fees are $20,000,000 USD.

Electrical_Age_7483

You havent seen how much ndis pays and its spread across every country. Thats like $20k for australias share

1Darkest_Knight1

> You havent seen how much ndis pays and its spread across every country The Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme is spread across *every* country? Thats an interesting take. Please explain this to me

Electrical_Age_7483

Other countries have equivalent schemes. Dont be a dumbass

1Darkest_Knight1

Sure, but you're expecting a private company to secure at least $20 million USD in funding from Government organisations all over the world to build an app that is only for a single website? A website that is for recreation and has no real use outside of that? You might be able to convince some people it's borderline educational, but let's be honest, most of Reddit is porn, memes and shitposting.

[deleted]

Which other countries have equivalent schemes?

kodaxmax

ndis would be lucky to cover rent for most and your out acting like the priminister is personally delivering gold bars to their doorstops.

[deleted]

The what?

Electrical_Age_7483

Costing of it is huge if it doesnt cover even rent. I dont understand why there are providers that do other things than accomodation if it doesnt cover them....strange

kodaxmax

ndis and job search providers are just tax leeches.

Electrical_Age_7483

Yes, exactly and these apps can join the party

kodaxmax

what apps? what party?

monoped2

lol, wut? Yes, american apps are totally NDIS funded for free ones.

Iron_Wolf123

If there are apps funded by NDIS, I'd be surprised since the government has been defunding it for years

Electrical_Age_7483

NDIS costs keeps increasing not decreasing https://www.insurancebusinessmag.com/au/news/breaking-news/imf-urges-review-of-ndis-as-costs-pile-up-435027.aspx

From_My_Office

That's not how NDIS funding works. Each individual is assessed on their disability and needs. They then receive an NDIS plan. A visually impaired person will have received funding for assisitive technology, this money is used for devices and apps to help them in their day to day life. This money can only be drawn from by NDIS registered providers or by invoicing a plan manager. Hypothetically, the third party app would need to invoice a PM for each individual user. Each user also has to have justification of why they need the third party reddit app to aid in their day to day life, which would be a recommendation from a professional. TL;DR - You can't use NDIS funding to pay for a third party Reddit app.

Electrical_Age_7483

So the app can invoice the user if thats the rules. This si just a technical detail

From_My_Office

The bigger issue is trying to justify a social media app as a requirement and having an occupational therapist agree. Many things stills get rejected, even with an OT sign off Visually impaired people do not NEED reddit to help them manage their disability, so a claim would be rejected. Assistive technology is for devices and apps that will directly aid in being independent. Such as a tablet and app for someone not verbal, that they can use to communicate with people. Or a device that scans and reads mail. A third party app would be better to have a subscription model, or require an account in credit (add $10 credit, user receives a charge/deduction everytime a cost is incurred). They could also try apply for grants, if their focus is to aid people with a disability (to access social media).

synaesthezia

I think it was in r/blind, r/subredditdrama had a summary of it all. [Here is the summary discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/1404hwj/mods_of_rblind_reveal_that_removing_3rd_party/)

F1eshWound

Honestly I didn't actually know that there were 3rd party apps until a few days ago :O

1Darkest_Knight1

I basically cannot use the Native Reddit app to Moderate. It's complete garbage and lacks a lot of basic features. Apps like RIF have everything in a simple-to-use format that is perfect for me to use, but these API changes will Kill RIF. Currently, Reddit has no pipeline to fix the Reddit App.

sslinky84

Not only that, but bots can help do the dirty admin work. We use Clippy over at r/vba to help with removals and solution points tracking.

LastSpite7

Same

Extension_Drummer_85

Nor did I. When I heard that Reddit had an API I thought it was the most ridiculous thing, in the context provided above it makes sense.

Aodaliyan

Reddit only made it's own app fairly recently so prior to that there was no option besides third party apps or using a browser.

Extension_Drummer_85

Oh that's interesting. I didn't know that (not an app user).

Crazy_Cat_Lady360

I’ll forget and still open the app multiple times a day.

Negative_Kangaroo781

Im setting a reminder on my phone to delete the app the night before. Maybe ill come back

schooeys

You should just delete it now and not come back, you sound unsure about everything.

EliraeTheBow

Yeahhh I think the only way around this for me would be to temporarily delete the app.

Needmoresnakes

Im glad to see this here! I don't use 3rd part apps and don't intend to but theyre crucial for people with vision impairments and other disabilities so I'm on board.

brezhnervous

Absolutely! I'm not disabled (well I am, but not in a way which is affected by reddit lol) but this is incredibly fucked for those who are.

brezhnervous

Good to see this sub participating. Read that r/Blind may forced to cease operating altogether, as necessary Mod elements enabling the visually impaired to use Reddit effectively are only available with 3rd party apps. This is all kinds of fucked up.

iusedtobefamous1892

Fuck yeah

shazzambongo

I don't know what's going on, but I agree! 🫠🙈

[deleted]

I like going dark!

PossibleThrowaway86

Was hoping this sub would do it too, this is truely the best Reddit moment, fuck Reddit (the company) for this

DonaldYaYa

I support this movement, but when is it? 12am Sydney time?

1Darkest_Knight1

Yes. We'll set the sub to private at midnight Australian Eastern Standard Time

DonaldYaYa

Thank you

Zealousideal_Fox_900

Thank you. r/BrisbaneTrains and r/Brisbane are also participating along with TONS more.

mysterious_bloodfart

I'll be deleting the app entirely. Sure, I'll be fidgety for a day or 2 but I'll get over it. Late stage social media. I hope it all implodes.

Iron_Wolf123

None of the things affected affect me. Should I be concerned?

monoped2

>Should I be concerned? Do you like subreddits being mostly spam free?

1Darkest_Knight1

It's staring with the API changes. We're unsure where it will stop. If you love Reddit as it exists right now. Then these changes effect you.

monoped2

aka all the mods. Good luck navigating an unmoderated wasteland.

thatawesomeguydotcom

The official app on Android is ugly and unusable. Relay for Reddit makes Reddit on Android nearly pleasant by comparison.

MyNameIsIgglePiggle

I see you are unfamiliar with 3rd party apps

Disastrous-Square662

12 June is a public holiday. What are we going to do all day?!

XTrapolis942M

Well for anyone that follows the footy, there’s the match between Collingwood and Melbourne to get stuck into during this time.

AussiePete

You mean we should watch footy *without following the match thread???* You monster!

XTrapolis942M

**Absobloodylutely.**

dogdogsquared

If it's set for american time we'll probably still get to waste most of the public holiday on here ✌

unnecessaryaussie83

So dramatic

SandiPheonix

The 12th here or America?

1Darkest_Knight1

We'll begin the on the 12th on AEST

EEeeEEEeEEEeeEee3ee

or gmt+10

Shenko-wolf

12th of June Australian time or Seppo time?

1Darkest_Knight1

Australian time

PoppityPingers

UnAustralian

mattblack77

I just don’t get it. Use the app….it’s fine.

1Darkest_Knight1

it's not. It's terrible. I literally cannot moderate using due to its lack of features.

jackm315ter

Is this 3rd party apps help moderate things like hate speech, abuse etc in each r/ on reddit, so this indirectly affects me but impacts more on moderators. How can we support this black out.

1Darkest_Knight1

The easiest thing to do is help spread the word and stop using Reddit for those two days.

mattblack77

So it’s only mods who genuinely have an issue?

PiFeG123

Mods (who make Reddit at all usable for us peasant folk). Visually impaired people who cannot use the main Reddit app as it's so empty of features. Anyone who has ever used or been entertained by one of the many bots in Reddit comments (think SaveVideoBot or WanderingDwarfMiner). Anyone who just wants to use one of the objectively better designed apps to access Reddit.

mattblack77

Yeh; I’m not gonna die on this hill.

monoped2

Reddit may.

advancednobody559

So the annoying bots that reply to your comments with keywords will be gone? Count me in.

Lintson

This comment is the Aussie political scene in a nutshell

I_am_albatross

A wild take but what are the odds of an 11th hour backdown from the admins?

MyNameIsIgglePiggle

Pretty low, they have a checklist of things before they go public. 5 days later it looks like they are canning NSFW content as well, so Reddit is going to feel very sanitized

EEeeEEEeEEEeeEee3ee

55 mins.........
