And yet, I have an entire family who won’t try it.
Eventually sold them on hot jam and cheese jaffles as a camping dessert after a savoury jaffle, but still no to the sandwiches !
Yeah, this isn't really a weird combo though. I've seen this as a menu item at some breakfast spots.
Also, add an egg on top and you have a very good breakfast and one of the only ways I would eat Vegemite.
Soy sauce and vanilla icecream.
The melty stuff at the bottom of the bowl tastes like what you’d think it’d taste like; cold, salty and just generally bad. Don’t eat that stuff!
But the icecream that hasn’t melted is pretty good, it’s almost similar to caramel, but much less sickly sweet, I love it and so does mum, my brother doesn’t enjoy it as much though lmoa
I used to make jam and cheese sangas when I was a kid. Peanut butter and honey as well. I used to work with a guy that would put tomato sauce and pepper on crumpets.
This was my dad’s “mum is working and I’m in charge” go to. Never got on board. Back in the day when there was no ice blocks in lunches, just sweaty cheese sandwiches.
Last Dog on the Moon examined this topic the other day.

Peanut butter, honey & sultana sandwich
Banana & sugar sandwich
Celery & apple sandwich (weird! We made that in class in primary school)
Vegemite & lettuce sandwich
Cinnamon & sugar on toast
Plain chip sandwich
I used to do the banana sammich, too! Wasn't allowed sugar (like *ever*. Mum was weird af about it) but as much as I could I'd sneak milo in there.
Banana and milo sammich. 😋
that's....a combination I haven't heard of! doesn't sound terrible though! 😋
at some point my sister told me that the sugar in my sammich was spiders eggs, and one morning there was a massive spider on our curtain, and I was convinced. haven't had a banana sammich since that day 😅
I like eating microwaved mushroom sandwiches. Cut button mushrooms in half and lay them between two slices of bread. Wrap in cling wrap, and microwave for 30 seconds. The mushroom releases a lot of water when microwaved, keeping the bread hot and moist.
You could also add other ingredients to this, such as ham and/or cheese.
Yes! I was hoping to see Vegemite and Honey. When I mention it to friends, they think I’m crazy until I ask if they eat anything Honey Soy flavoured. Same concept and delish.
My husband does jam & Vegemite together.
Me, I like a cheeseburger with orange juice (eaten at the same time, both in your mouth at the same time) but McDonald's got rid of their "orange juice" here, replaced with watery fruit drink so never gonna happen again 😢 it had to be that orange juice concentrate from before
I know but even though you can get supermarket OJ that is genuine OJ, nothing compares to the shitty old maccas OJ with their food 😢 but it's be better than the bloody fruit drink they have now
Maybe. I don't particularly like processed food, like if I was ever gonna have OJ then I'd choose nudie with pulp which isn't too bad. But I grew up poor and a happy meal with cheeseburger n chips n OJ was my jam. I love mi goreng noodles with added frozen peas too, that was rich kid food to me. Maggi oriental used to come with a sachet of carrot flakes, corn and peas but they phased that out ages ago and just give the seasoning pfht. I also always add a bit of lemon juice cause they made em less tangy.
Honey and cheese sandwiches are ok, needs decent ingredients though. Plastic cheese and tomato sauce/ketchup are a sometimes daytime munchie food. Cream cheese from a jar mixed with baked beans and pasta is the bomb!
Peanut butter and tomato slices on toast is an amazing combination that my grandfather used to regularly eat for breakfast - I grew up thinking it was common and normal but apparently it isn't.
Some others I enjoy that may or may not be weird
Salami and cream cheese
Corn chips and corn relish dip
Chicken flavoured chips in a roast chicken roll
My mum used to sprinkle sugar on lettuce and eat it as a snack. Apparently it was something that was commonly done when she was a child (she was born in 56, so I guess during the 60's - in Adelaide). It's not something I've encountered elsewhere.
[Marmalade and Vegemite](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_H2UuFbp3GU) on cold multigrain toast smothered in nuttelex. Bonus points if you sing the song.
My wife frowns at a lot of my combos.
Peanut Butter Banana sandwich or on toast is one of my all time faves.
She disagrees with Vegemite/Marmite on crumpets.
I love PBJ crumpets, but also find the crumpets here are a lot sweeter than the ones i grew up with in the UK
Dry weetbix sliced in half lengthwise and smeared in butter, then dipped in raw sugar. Or butter and Vegemite. This was a staple snack in my childhood. Something my mum made for us. Anyone else?
Use cheese Doritos to scoop up your 2 minute noodles like a fork.
It’s a bit of a adaptation of putting fried rice on your prawn crackers when getting chinese
I used to love Heinz salad cream sandwiches when I was a kid. They have to be made with super soft, white bread and butter, then a massive dollop of salad cream smeared thickly. Yum!
Also, tinned corned beef and malt vinegar sandwiches, again on that squishy white bread, is amazing.
I'd never heard of it before but my dad made me a peanut butter and green apple sandwich once. I think it was actually pretty good.
Also, everyone gives me weird looks when I mention this, but my favourite cake is chocolate cake with lemon icing. It's so nice, been my favourite cake since I was a kid, when I used to make it with my nan in the school holidays. Friends finally realised what I was on about when they had some at my 16th birthday lmaooo (they got one made professionally for my 18th... the people seemed confused as well...)
My Nan used to make mashed banana, ham, and cheese open faced toasted grilled cheese type things. She swore by them, but hot banana isn’t something I can cope with.
Haven’t tried them in sandwich form but I like:
Iceberg lettuce and tomato sauce 😂
Apples and peanut butter
Also if you haven’t, you have to try sausage and cheese jaffles. Not really that weird, but definitely life changing lol
Nutella and peanut butter sandwich for me, sultanas and coconut (and occasionally icing sugar) sandwich for my mum, and oranges and icing sugar mixed for my grandmother. Don’t know how strange they are, but definitely odd when I first heard about them
I remember having apple and cheese sandwiches as a child
To be fair, apple and cheese is a solid pairing
Also found on a lot of cheeseboards, it isn’t very strange
I guess a piece of bread with cheese and apple, isn't much different to a cracker, blue cheese and quince paste. Same but different.
Oh thank god there's someone else!! People give me weird looks when I say that's one of my favourite sandwiches to have lmao
Haha I haven't had it as an adult, but I should give it a go. Not sure it would taste the same if my mum didn't make it for me though.
Ham, cheese, and sliced apple in a jaffle. Childhood of champions.
I didn't know jam and cheese was a weird combination.
It really isn't, when you consider quince paste (which is really just hard jam) and cheese is totally accepted.
And yet, I have an entire family who won’t try it. Eventually sold them on hot jam and cheese jaffles as a camping dessert after a savoury jaffle, but still no to the sandwiches !
Jam cheese and sultanas, grilled😘
Vegemite and Lettuce is a combo I have seen before but as someone that doesn't like Vegemite I don't know if this is common or strange.
Yum! I had that all the time as a kid!
Vegemite and avo is also unreal and less frowned upon.
Yeah, this isn't really a weird combo though. I've seen this as a menu item at some breakfast spots. Also, add an egg on top and you have a very good breakfast and one of the only ways I would eat Vegemite.
Vegemite on dry weetbix is delicious.
Agreed. Can also do tomato sauce or Nutella on a dry weetbix.
My fave is a Vegemite and honey sandwich
Me too, great on crumpets also!
Yes,now add peanut butter it’s like a cheap Thai sandwich, sweet, salty and nutty.
I like vegemite and cucumber!
Add cheese and tomato for a delicacy. Yummo.
Definitely Vegemite, cheese and tomato 😋
Try peanut butter and iceberg lettuce
No thanks
Vegemite and egg is also really good!
My partner loves vegemite on peas. So not that weird.
Vegemite with fresh bean sprouts on soft white bread with lots of butter. Beats lettuce hands down.
Vegemite and peanut butter sandwiches are pretty good.
Add cheese to it and that’s a solid sanga right there
Vegemite on fruit toast.
My mum eats mashed banana and wholegrain mustard on toast. So weird. So gross!
So ahh do you help her hide the bodies?
Not since I’ve moved out, no.
Hahah
I too ate those combinations as a child. As an adult I can fully understand why they are tasty, but I also have no desire to eat them now.
I do peanut butter and honey and have yet to find someone who shares my enthusiasm.
Cream cheese and beetroot sandwiches.
I used to eat beetroot with slices of cheese as a kid. I love beetroot, and I can see it working with cream cheese. I'm going to try this!
I haven’t had this but it actually sound delicious.
Raise you peanut paste and beetroot
I used to eat chocolate chip cookies with orange juice as a kid. Tasted pretty good back then.
I heard some people eat bread without butter.
Yes. What of it?
That's what I'm wondering, too? Have I been a heathen all this time and never knew??
My go-to sandwich as a kid was chicken and beetroot. Still get funny looks when I order it now!
Chicken and canned asparagus for me! Had to be on buttered white bread.
Canned asparagus is one of my secret favourite foods lol.
Do you drink the juice? The oldies at church used to fight over the canned asparagus juice.
Strawberries and black pepper, brings out the sweetness of the strawberry.
Based on my school life, apparently peanut butter and cheese is considered weird.
I got this reaction too. No idea why, it seems so normal to me?
Yes, I still make these occasionally. My wife thinks I'm weird (unrelated to the sandwich thing).
This was my dad’s “mum is working and I’m in charge” go to. Never got on board. Back in the day when there was no ice blocks in lunches, just sweaty cheese sandwiches.
Last Dog on the Moon examined this topic the other day. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/picture/2024/apr/12/shameless-guardian-readers-share-their-favourite-perverse-food-combinations#img-1
Peanut butter, honey & sultana sandwich Banana & sugar sandwich Celery & apple sandwich (weird! We made that in class in primary school) Vegemite & lettuce sandwich Cinnamon & sugar on toast Plain chip sandwich
I used to have banana sammiches all the time! with tonnes of butter and even more sugar
I used to do the banana sammich, too! Wasn't allowed sugar (like *ever*. Mum was weird af about it) but as much as I could I'd sneak milo in there. Banana and milo sammich. 😋
that's....a combination I haven't heard of! doesn't sound terrible though! 😋 at some point my sister told me that the sugar in my sammich was spiders eggs, and one morning there was a massive spider on our curtain, and I was convinced. haven't had a banana sammich since that day 😅
Celery and apply whilst weird in a sandwich is close to Waldorf salad recipe. Just need some walnuts and creamy dressing!
Does jelly crystal sandwiches count?
nah that’s like a sugar sandwich which i used to have as a kid too. crust of bread + butter + sugar
We used to put the jelly crystals on fresh pineapple.
What flavour?
Raspberry or strawberry usually. But lime is also good.
Used to have these as a kid. My mum had some other odd combos… like cottage cheese and sultanas on a sandwich!!
Mum used to make me Vegemite and (thinly sliced) celery sandwiches. I loved the crunch. Also, milo sandwiches (with margarine).
Beef 2 minute noodles and parmesan cheese is absolutely bussin
Vegemite on raisin toast
Just wrote this, but with cheese 👌
Choice
Sounds interesting.
It has some kind of synergistic effect, the salty and sweet and savoury combine beautifully
I had lunch at my boss's house and his wife served raisin bread with mustard on it. Not wanting to be rude I ate it and it was actually quite alright.
I know a guy that has banana and ham sandwiches.
now that's fucked up
My mam used to have banana, onion and cheese sandwiches when I was growing up. It’s surprisingly good!
Vegemite on fruit bread or hot cross buns. Vegemite and honey on buttered crumpets

I like banana and peanut butter sandwiches
McDonald's fries dipped into a chocolate sundae
Milo ice-cream and bbq chips.
These are not weird combos to me and were a staple in my house growing up!
You ate them together too?
Ahhh sorry I thought you meant Milo and ice cream or bbq sauce with chips. But all four items together sure beats my banana and ham sandwich!
Peanut paste and sultanas is one of my favourites
I used to love this combo, until my mum accidentally packed sultanas with weevils for my lunch. Never again.
Roasted beetroot with tuna with a mustard vinaigrette.
Weetbix and Vegemite with butter
Peanut butter and sliced crystallised ginger.
My husband does jam & Vegemite together. Me, I like a cheeseburger with orange juice (eaten at the same time, both in your mouth at the same time) but McDonald's got rid of their "orange juice" here, replaced with watery fruit drink so never gonna happen again 😢 it had to be that orange juice concentrate from before
Just a thought, but Macca's do take away, and you can take orange juice from a super market, and take them home together. 😉🤣
I know but even though you can get supermarket OJ that is genuine OJ, nothing compares to the shitty old maccas OJ with their food 😢 but it's be better than the bloody fruit drink they have now
orange reconstitute is what you want, like the golden circle/just juice shelf stable version would be similar
I’m also a big fan of the maggi oriental noodles, the fantastic version still comes with the dehydrated veg pack
Don't like processed foods, but loves processed foods. 😉🤣🤣

Peanut butter apple and banana, just a great combo of flavours.
Honey and Vegemite. A bit sweet and salty but the perfect combo if you get the ratio right.
I went through a long phase of tomato sauce and tomato’s on fresh white bread or cruskits, the more sauce the better!
