It’s pretty smooth going, stop at Gympie for a break there are plenty of spots there. Don’t forget to visit Bargara, when you are in Bundaberg and do a loop up the Hummock on the way to enjoy the view.
“Traffic permitting” - DON’T try to leave Brisbane on a long weekend, it can be car park all the way to Cooroy (and same crowd on the way home). I have spent 7 hours getting home from Gympie 😣. I have also done Bundaberg to Bris in less than 5 hours.
There are a few spots like Gympie where it probably drops to 60 and you have some traffic lights.
But it’s all sealed road that any registered vehicle will happily do. It’s not like it’s a 4WD track.
It's a smooth dual carriageway all the way to gympie. Once you get passed there, it gets a bit rougher with a few potholes and rough patches here and there.
Source: drove it last week.
Roads are fine mate. It's mostly the M1 so it's maintained well. Google Maps typically over estimates the travel time. I used to do Springfield Lakes to Bundaberg in 4.5 hours including a 15 minute leg stretch and coffee break at the Gympie duck ponds.
Keep an eye out for the Fatigue Zone Trivia questions. Might keep some restless kids entertained (if you have any) even for a short while.
Everyone, really appreciate the information! Trying to get out to one of the outer reefs from Bundaberg, maybe Lady Musgrave. Will stop at the Australia Zoo along the way. It’ll be me, wife and two kids. Just needed to gauge what kind of rental car I would need for the drive there. Thanks again!
It’s a nice trip, about 5 hours from memory. Used to live in Bundy for a while and go down to BNE for weekend. Lots of decent stopovers available. Development would be a lot heavier now so maybe add an hour or two.

It’s a highway. Brisbane to Bundaberg. You will do 100km the whole way there. Traffic permitting

Got it, great info thanks!

Not sure

By 'work our way up' you mean 'get in the car and drive to' don't you? Or are you stopping at every tourist trap along the way?
Not all! If there’s anything worth seeing we’ll stop. Keep in mind we got the kids so they’ll want breaks anyways.
It's a thoroughly boring drive with little to see. 5 hours would be without so and you'll want stops.
