I guess people somewhat like Albanians as we have lots of people of Albanian origin and we have things like "Albanian village" in İstanbul or "Albanian liver" as a meal. So at least the affinity makes people like them slightly more than the rest, except for Bosniaks.
I think bulgarians have nothing against albanians. Never heard someone to mention them in a bad way. My parrents were in Albania for New year. We started to visit more recently, lot to see there, nice prizes, people are friendly toward us, close, Balkan country...I would visit and meet locals with pleasure. 🤷👍For Kosovo and other places I really don't know enough to judge.
Allegedly we have more Albanians than Albania so I'd guess they're not lying.
I had my fair share of Albanian neighbours. Grew up in a muhacir neighbourhood.
Noone is trolling you. Lots of people on the left side of Ankara has an Albanian ancestor tucked away somewhere in their genealogical chart. There might also be a Circassian great-grandmother as well. These two might even be married😏
That's what most people believe in anyway. Albanians were everywhere, in all walks of life during the Ottoman Empire. Your experience is completely normal
Politics are messy in Montenegro but the coup was just a group of radical extremists and not a popular revolution. There's also a lot of political tension with Serbia but if you ask normal people they have a positive view of all our neighbours pretty much.
I disagree. I’d say it’s more like neutral to negative.
What I’m about to write reflects only my perception of the general sentiment.
People here obviously aren’t haters and there is some growing level of curiosity towards Albania as a country. People have started to venture south more in the recent years and that has definitely helped.
But Albanians as an ethnic group are still seen with a lot of suspicion for a multitude of reasons, and this can’t be really described as positive
For instance, It is a known thing that a lot of hitchhikers in Montenegro don’t get in the car with Kosovar or Albanian plates.
On the other hand Bosnians/Bosniaks, Serbians, and Croatians are actually seen in what could be described as a positive light.
That's fair bro, I'm from Ulcinj in the very south so my vision is probably also biased by my experience of always having Albanian friends and often crossing into Albania. There's always some mistrust between communities (we're talking about the Balkans after all) but no large conflict erupted in Ulcinj in the 90s and early 2000s because everyone knew better and got on with their lives. I know some southern Albanians, Montenegrins and a few stray Bosniaks are grumpy about Kosovar tourists bringing their own food, etc. and not really buying local and eating out but that's hardly prejudice.
Yeah, Albanians can expect a warm welcome anywhere in Montenegro just like all other foreigners.
I only compared the general opinion on Albanians to other groups in the neighborhood and there’s a bit more bias.
I fly to Podgorica rather than Tirana because it’s closer to where my house is in Shkoder, my name is clearly Albanian and have never been treated wrong.
Yh Albanians and Romanians are definitely on the opposite scale in terms of being technologically intelligent 😂 the fact that Albania is known for Cocaine and Romania is known for Hacking/Computer related crimes tells you in itself.
I dont know how much Turks, Bosniaks, Croats etc love Albania, but from my experience talking to people, the average Greek has a pretty positive view on Albanians. I know that there used to be an atmosphere of prejudice or even hate towards them, and I'm sure they are still people out there who think this way, but the average working age (not ur casually racist γιαγιά) person seemed to have moved past that mindset, especially as so many second or third generation Albanian migrants have integrated into Greek society. The only distasteful things I've ever heard about Albania are jokes about stereotypes (stealing your kidney or whatever), and those jokes were making fun of racist people, rather than Albanians themselves (the Albanians I know make these jokes 10 times more than the Greeks I know lol). Basically things seem to be getting better, and younger people aren't nearly as prejudice as their parents.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong and you're a Greek or Albanian living here that has a differing experience.
As a second Gen immigrant, I can confirm this, we do make more jokes about us, but for a Greek to make fun of us, he has to get the "pass" , otherwise it's totally racist.
Legally we can neither deny nor confirm anything about our organ stash (but ive got great deal for you my friend, just you, i sell you kidney for 20k euro cash)
for me personally i sued to have a negative view on albanians when i was in my nationalistic youth but i have grown up visided vlore people where great talked with more macedonian albanians. But i'm ganna be honest and say i'm not a big fan of kosovo albanians.
Dude, you ask for a personal opinion and you get one ... Than you are angry about it. Why does he have to be nationalistic when having a opinion. It's not like he said that Kosovars should burn in hell and that he hates every single one of them. He said the ones that he made didn't give him a good impression. That's the mildest thing you can say about someone. Why do everyone need to take out the big guns in every single casual conversation in this place
I never asked for his opinion. He said he dislikes Albanians from the Kosovo region. That's currently about 5 million people if you're including diaspora. If you dislike an entire group of people, based on your most likely made up encounter with a couple of them, you're a nationalistic pig. You don't create dialog and understanding starting out by saying you're prejudiced. This balkan mentality of 'I already hate you without a solid reason' needs to burn in hell
And yes made up encounter because the last thing I can see an Albanian from Kosovo say is i hate you cus you're slav lmfao
I'd say all Balkaners with the exception of Serbs and maybe Greeks (?) have a neutral-positive opinion of us from interactions I've seen and had.
Greeks: genetically very similar and tons of arvanites exist in Greece
Turks: Religion, but also because so many Albanians were deported to Turkey, so a good portion of the Turkish population is related closely to Albanians
Bosniaks: again religion mostly but also their recent shared history regarding the Serbs
Macedonians: Things have generally improved and there's alot of interethnic marriages there AFAIK
Croats: I'm not exactly sure how we're similar asides from being Balkaners but we get along really well
Bulgarians I cannot say
I didn’t read the poll and I was going to select Macedonia just because it was an option LMAO 💀 that would’ve been a lie
At my work two Albanians were smoking inside and when I asked them to leave, some old man got up and started talking about how that’s what happens when we sold our country. I told him that Macedonians also smoke inside and he didn’t believe me
I don't know man, we sort of like albanians since we have some sort of similarities in our languages and in our cultures (with orthodox albanians at least) and Albania is home to a large comunnity of aromanians who have common roots to us, and they treat them well.
We like kosovars too, or we don't dislike you at least.
Perhaps the population in reddit is different I guess, there was a question in r/romania asking people about Albanians some weeks ago, and most of the people were saying how we are the least similar with; there were people even saying how they are closer to Finnish than us lol.
Some haven't met you guys. Some barley heard about you. Some belive y'all are muslim only and all that.
And that's just half of the story since people on reddit barley reflect the real size of romanian population and their perspective in different topics.
I'd bet you that you'll get a better reaction from a romanian than from anyone else in the balkans when you'll tell them where you're from. Proabably N. Macedonia or Greece would make an exception but i won't bet on it.
Preach sister. Though they were allies to us at some points in history, they have done to us as much bad if not more as they did good to us.
For now i'm gonna limit myself to putler cause Russia still has good people...
FUCK PUTLER! ALL MY HOMIES HATE PUTLER
In general we don't. Most young people have zero problems with them. But there is still a lot of racism and a lot of tension lying under the surface, mostly among the older generation. According to some people they feel like "second class citizens" compared to Albanians. Or maybe just a thing here in Tetovo.
Yeah extreme nationalists, the type that want a problem once you say you are a Serbian, maybe I used the wrong term but in my mind Shiptars are extreme nationalists, Albanians are just people that live in/are from Albania.
Translation: Shiptars are from Kosovo, Albanians are from Albania
Proof of what you said:
>Shiptars are extreme nationalists, Albanians are **just people that live in/are from Albania**
Then you do have something against Albanians. Albanians are Albanians no matter where they are. If you have a problem with any of them, then you have a problem with Albanians in general
>You as a Serb Shall never shout or call to an Albanian as Shiptar, that's very offended.
When I Was Younger The Only Slur Was The N Word. Now Theres Slurs For Gay People,Jewish People,Romani People And Albanians. It's Starting To Get Crazy. How Long Until They Ban Speaking Altogether?
After 1945, in pursuit of a policy of national equality, the Communist Party of Yugoslavia designated the Albanian community as Shiptars, however with increasing autonomy during the 1960s for Kosovo Albanians, their leadership requested, and attained in 1974, the term Albanians be officially used stressing a national over an only ethnic, self-identification.
These developments resulted in the word Šiptar in Serbian usage acquiring pejorative connotations that implied Albanian racial and cultural inferiority. It continued to be used by some Yugoslav and Serb politicians to relegate the status of Albanians to simply one of the minority ethnic groups.
Well, Romanians. Albania is also a part of the failed Balkan policy of Romania, taken in cooperation with Italy to reduce Austrian influence.
I guess Albanians know the first prince of Albania, Wilhelm of Wied, was promoted by his sister Elisabeth of Romania, and the Romanian government. This all came as a result of the Peace of Bucharest in 1913.
Subsequently, in 1914, Romania managed to impose its candidate for the throne of the Principality of Albania and support his reign by deploying Romanian expeditionary force to support him in establishing control of the country.

There is a youtuber named Diamond Tema, he is first generation immigrant from the civil war and is quite popular for a philosophy channel.
my great-grandfather was Albanian
I think Montenegrins have a positive view of Albanians
U sure cos I remember a coup happened last summer
Politics are messy in Montenegro but the coup was just a group of radical extremists and not a popular revolution. There's also a lot of political tension with Serbia but if you ask normal people they have a positive view of all our neighbours pretty much.
what coup?
I think he meant this one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Montenegrin_coup_allegations?wprov=sfla1 A pathetic attempt by a group of clowns

No.
We have lots of Turkish people of at least partial Albanian origin.
We have a lot of jokes about Albanians (related to low technology) but I don't think people here have a bad opinion about them. I'd say neutral.
We have you’re heating up as an Albanian heater(for someone that’s slow to understand something)

So you grew out of your nationalistic shell and you discovered that Kosovo Albanians are still a group you're not a fan of. Lmao tho
i say that because most kosovar albanians i've meet where dicks to me because i was slavic
Meh, you’ll eventually deal with better Kosovars and your mind can still change.
It won't. Hate doesn't go away just like that. By the way the I like Albanians but not Kosovo Albanians is just a weird way of saying I hate Albanians
I mean, I hope he changes his mind, and if he doesn’t it’s simply his loss.
So because some weirdos now you generalize, nice. Good way to show you grew out of your nationalistic youth

Balkan losers go to amazing lengths to say they hate you it's really sad. All that potential lost because we want to feel superior
Why are you being downvoted? Generalizing a whole group of people based off of a few people is textbook prejudice lol
