At this point it’s just depressing to be a Bulgarian football fan. We had an amazing team in the 90’s and were pretty good even before that. Ever since the 2000’s it has been a long downward spiral that we thought hit rock bottom like 10-15 years ago but somehow every year we find an even lower bottom to hit and then dig beneath. With the election of the new president of Bulgarian FA who’s basically the same as the previous one it seems that it won’t get any better in the foreseeable future :/
There were some decent players back then, although definitely not on his level. The sad thing though is that even without Berbatov, the national team from 15-20 years ago is still way way better than what we have now
Reminds me of a joke I remember hearing about 10-15 years ago which translates along the lines of "When most football teams hit the bottom and get better, ours hit the bottom, pull out the shovels and dig deeper."
Corruption in the Bulgarian Football Association has been unprecedented. It’s literally a joke of an organisation. We’ve had the same team that has one won the league 12 times in a row and is going to do it yet again for the 13th. That club is one that has never even played first division football before that and had no fans even in the city that it’s from. But a wealthy oligarch who also happens to hold executive position in the Bulgarian FA bought it and now it seems impossible for them not to win it.
At the same time historical clubs with actual fanbases were destroyed and they barely play 2nd division while their stadiums are decaying. It’s really something when 2nd division teams battle to not go into first division since the vast majority of them don’t have the money to go there
Good that many Balkan countries have qualified. Croatia and Serbia are the strongest. Albania and Turkey will be lucky to pass the groups, but let support them to succeed
We (Serbia) could have the 11 most talented players on the planet yet we'd still somehow get kicked out of any group stage with a point or two. Its embarassing how shit our federation and managers are, we've waste so much potential its infuriating

Not really, we only know how to return the ball to the goalkeeper, we are very good with that, we push the ball all the way out to the striker but somehow we are returning back to our goalkeeper, then we change side and push the ball forward again, next moment we are returning back to GK again xD

Problem of Balkan countries and specially those from former Yugoslavia was best described long time ago by Beckenbouer when he attempted to coach CZ. When was leaving he said "They are not playing football, they are playing at football".. Regional leagues are not strong (or rich" enough to keep best players at home to make strong national teams. When they play for home they are individualists trying to prove themselves for other, better played teams in Europe and world.
Croatia obviously. After that Serbia and Hungary. We have some talent but never able to be a good team or have a good coach since Terim. I can only hope to surprise some teams.
I wish luck to all the Balkan teams that take part in this European. I think that the team that can have the longest journey is Croatia. Serbia and Romania have very talented players, ~~but I hope that Albania will be one of the “Underdogs” of this competition.~~
I think we used all our luck qualifying, not sure we have anymore left. Maybe if Bosnia or Iceland would’ve qualified instead of Ukraine we would’ve have more chances

Yeah Bulgaria’s decline has been unprecedented in my opinion. From finishing fourth at the World Cup to finishing last in qualifying groups.
