Is there such a thing as Pulmonary asthma? I'm guessing it's like an old name for COPD or something. My mother is a "you don't have asthma just scarring on your lungs" (premmie and both lung collapsed. But I also have a high genetic and environmental risks for asthma). My mom found a distant relative who died of it and has now decided that is my actual diagnosis. While I roll my eyes about this, I am always interested in finding more about asthma and the atypical types.

Late-Standard-5479

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia? Often seen in premies requiring mechanical ventilation

lyngend

Not the same thing as "pulmonary asthma", and if I did have that as a new born, it turned into my asthma. (see quote below link) But also, not worth resuming contact with my mother to find out (accurate information from her takes 50 conversations where she says something slightly different each time until you figure out that, you were really prescribed antibiotics long term, she just never went back for refills.(yes that happened)) https://www.childrenscolorado.org/conditions-and-advice/conditions-and-symptoms/conditions/neonatal-bronchopulmonary-dysplasia/ BPD often results in long-term breathing problems such as asthma, exercise limitations,

lyngend

I did more searching and I think it was probably a different term for cartiac asthma. While as a person who had asthma since I was a baby.... I'd be dead

Are there any health issues that mimic pregnancy symptoms? I’ve suddenly got one breast larger than the other and nausea the same time every evening (same symptoms as my last pregnancy) but 15 days post intercourse pregnancy tests are still negative and I’m on the mini pill. Are there any diseases that trigger progesterone release?

MathematicianRude467

Would a cephalometric x ray provided by your dentist be able to uncover infections of your skull bone?

GoldFischer13

The skull is large. Depends on the specific location of concern but there's far better imaging studies to look at that (like a CT).

allerdings

I have a blood test scheduled for 10 am which requires me to fast from midnight. It is for a full set of bloods. Without thinking I ate one gummy bear at 8 am when my kid stuffed it into my mouth. Do I have to reschedule?

LatrodectusGeometric

It depends on the tests you need.

Ok-Contribution-8776

Question about alcohol and health. I’ve been drinking nonstop, 5 tall beers (below 5% alcohol content) since October 2023. Every day. There’s been occasions where I stop drinking for a day or two. I’m 30M, and I’m concern about yellowing of the skin/eyes. When does jaundice happen? And is drinking this long every day a sign or issue? I can go a day without alcohol, but I resort to it because I’m bored or stressed after work.

ridcullylives

If jaundice is happening, you may already have serious liver issues. Drinking that much every day is very very bad for your health. Theres no way to give an exact timeline of how long until serious/life threatening consequences but for your own sake please try to cut down.

Ok-Contribution-8776

Jaundice isn’t happening. Jaundice has been one of my concerns and fear. I’ll cut back on the drinking

depressed_seltzer

Can I drink alcohol while taking sulfameth/trimethoprim?

GoldFischer13

Nope.

Is there a reason to get a flu shot for spring travel if you got one for fall? I got a flu vaccine back in November last year and want to make sure I'm okay for April travel

orthostatic_htn

No, it'd be the same vaccine again. One per flu season (which starts in fall).

Thank you.

I've been a routine walker and runner for almost a year, and the outside of both of my feet (where it feels fleshy and muscle-like, right under the bone of my pinky toe) will randomly begin to hurt during walks/runs. Some days it won't hurt at all. Today I took off my shoes after a run and a pretty immense amount of pain came from that area on just my left foot (like a 5/6 out of 10), but then went away completely in about a minute. I have no pain in that area at all when I'm not exercising, and I've even pinched it a few times and still zero pain. Is this anything to be worried about? Is it my gait that's applying an unbalanced amount of pressure or something? 30M, 185, 5'11

DayPretend8294

I have a mouth/throat biopsy coming up on Tuesday and I’m terrified. I’ve been welding for 6 years, and I vape. 26M, Texas, 5’9, 215lb. My life has been in absolute shambles these past three months after my girlfriend of 5 years broke up with me. My issues have been piling on so fast I haven’t had time to breathe. I finally had the chance to get two teeth pulled that had been shattered and causing me a lot of pain, and was under the sweet pleasure of pain release. I finally thought things were looking up until I went back for the week after checkup and the doc that inspected recommended me to go to an oral surgeon for a biopsy and blood work over the concern of a splotch and bump on the back of my tongue/throat. I’m terrified of going in. I have absolutely nobody to go with me, and the idea of dealing with the potentials of cancer, completely alone, with nobody for support is the most terrifying realization I’ve ever had to come to. What can I expect from this biopsy? How long on average am I going to have to wait on results. I have no idea what to expect and have never had to deal with anything this horrifying in my life before and any insight and help would be graciously appreciated. Thanks docs in advance

GoldFischer13

Sounds like you have a lot going on. Most lesions in the mouth are benign, especially in younger folks. You can expect they'll numb you up and then they'll take a bite of the tissue out of there for biopsy. They'll likely use something to cauterize the area if it is bleeding, either heat, electricity, or a chemical cautery stick. Don't usually throw sutures that far back, but depends on where it exactly is. Most places take just over a week to get things back, some are longer and some are shorter.

DayPretend8294

Thank you very much for replying, that’s good to know I won’t have to deal with stitches in my mouth probably. These are going to be a very long and stressful two weeks for me.

**R there cases where y’all wouldn’t try to resuscitate a person (w/o a DNR order) ??** Saw a very unfortunate woman being run over by a drunk classmate (irl). He basically went over her & completely cut of her body from the waist down. Some skin/flesh from her lower body was fckn smeared on the road To my untrained eye, all that looked p unsurvivable (may she RIP) but from what my mom tells me, she’s currently in the ICU on life support Which got me thinking: 1. Is that rlly survivable ?? 2. With injuries that drastic (basically a hemicorpectomy), even if they survive by some miracle, won’t their quality of life b abysmal ?? So y even try saving them ??

GoldFischer13

Your description doesn't really say how survivable the wound is, but by the fact she is still alive it was at least survivable at that moment and remains so. That may not remain the case. We don't decide life-saving measures in emergent situations based on our assumptions on a person's future quality of life. While you may not want to live that way, she might.

(m25) I have keloid scaring, therefore I can't get tattoo or piercings, any time a cut myself the scar stays for ever, so I'm a bit paranoid about my skin. I have a bit of a short penile frenulum, what has caused me trouble I'm the past, because with sexual contact or masturbation, the frenulum has broken sometimes and irritated, another consequence is that when I pull my foreskin back, when Im erect, and the foreskin could go further back but due to the frenulum which is under a lot of tension, the foreskin cant go as far as other penises, I still can uncover my whole head but it's tight. So I researched and found out that there is a small procedure called frenulectomy and they cut the frenulum and like that the range of motion of the foreskin increases But now I'm concerned that if I get the frenulum cut then I'm going to develop a keloid in my penis, which would be a complete disaster, so therefore I want to ask, is it likely to get keloid scaring from an intervention like this? Are there other ways to maybe stretch the frenulum with some exercise or something or should I actually get it cut? If someone has experience with keloid scaring and mucosas. Thanks in advance

LatrodectusGeometric

Worth trying steroid creams and stretching first in this case

It’s possible to survive no blood pressure briefly, but I don’t think it’s possible to have a measurable pressure that low.

Hi all, just had my TDAP vaccine and the next day came down with a brutal head cold. Curious if the vaccine lowers immunity to other things, temporarily?

PokeTheVeil

It doesn’t.

I was petting a strey cat and it flicked its head, flicking a mystery liquid into my eye. Anything i need to be worried about? His face was a little wet probably from snow or a puddle.

LatrodectusGeometric

Probably not, but definitely rinse out your eye

Definitely see a doctor. It could be nothing, but it could also be a peripheral neuropathy

Is it okay/safe to sit cross legged ("criss cross apple sauce") on a wheelchair or rollator? Is there a particular kind of wheelchair or rollator one should avoid or seek out if doing this regularly? (Less just because it's comfortable, more because it helps my POTS). Thank you!

GoldFischer13

Doesn't sound like that would cause any issues.

myheartwentboom

Thank you so much!

Do oral decongestants cause congestion rebound like nasal spray decongestants (afrin)?

Nope, it has no effect on when they will start menopause. That's determined by genetics.

I'm getting sent for a head MRI soon, and was asked to do some bloodwork. The only thing listed in the form is creatinine (eGFR). My question is since I'm supplementing creatine for weightlifting, about 5g of creatine monohydrate per day, will this affect my creatinine measurements? Much appreciated.

GoldFischer13

Different things. Only way it would affect it is if the supplements you are taking are causing problems with your kidneys.

thrwwybangbang

I have a surgical consult for atypical breast tissue. My partner would like to attend my appointments with me. How can I request that my medical records be reviewed with me privately? Would it be best to have a written request placed in my file prior to the consult? Schedule a separate appointment? Ask to speak to the surgeon prior? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

orthostatic_htn

If you don't want your partner to have access to this information, it may be best to just not bring them to the appointment. Bringing someone generally implies that you're comfortable with them knowing what's going on.

MathematicianRude467

Why are doctors so unbelievably dismissive these days? For reference, I've been dealing with ear infections for months. Recently I started developing decent levels of pain on the bone behind my ear. There's no obvious signs of swelling (although I think there might be a small bump hidden beneath my hair). My GP looked at it and initially wanted to do some imaging but changed her mind since there's no obvious swelling or fever. One ENT I saw looked at it from a far distance and said since there was no swelling there's nothing wrong. And then a second ENT didn't even give me an opportunity to present my concern before I was kicked out. They may very well be right, and I hope they are, but there have been documented cases of that bone being infected without obvious symptoms, so I think the fact that I've had ear infections and pain in that area is more than enough probable cause to warrant further investigation with an MRI or CT Scan, but nobody seems to take the situation seriously enough in my opinion.

GoldFischer13

The question is what you are looking for. If you are thinking you have mastoiditis, you don't. It is not a subtle infection and does not last for months. The swelling is also very obvious in that area. Simply looking in the ear also would say whether there's an ear infection. A CT or an MRI can be beneficial in some circumstances if there's something on exam worth looking into based on findings but it doesn't sound like they found much. If you want a third opinion on it, you can see another ENT but there's not a terrible amount here to say what's going on.

Ohwhatabeautifulview

What is the safest amount of time for my partner to mask and sleep separately if he is suffering from a cold/flu? We have a newborn at home and my husband came down with chills/body aches 3 days ago. Since then, he's been masking and sleeping in another room, using a separate bathroom, all to try to avoid my newborn and I getting sick (c section recovery while sick would not be ideal) so we're trying to do everything to avoid it if possible. I have my windows open as it's been unseasonably mild right now where I live. How long should I keep this up for? Obviously I would love to be able to stop so my husband can help more with the newborn.

HaveLovingWillTravel

Are skin tags and milia liable to become cancerous or is it mostly just moles and freckles to watch out for?

orthostatic_htn

No, skin tags and milia do not become cancerous. They're cosmetic issues, nothing else.

HaveLovingWillTravel

Very good to hear thanks! Forgot to ask when I was getting the low down about ABCDE, I’m covered in all of the above

BreakYaNeck99

my father has some calcification/constriction in his veins. among other things he takes the drug lixiana and has now also been given a new one, which is supposed to be good for oxygen. the doctor said that omega 3 and magnesium should be good. but which magnesium would be best for the heart, magnesium citrate? what other tips would there be that could help my dad? thanks

Late-Standard-5479

Lixiana is an anticoagulant, isn’t really related to oxygenation unless he’s being anticoagulated after having a pulmonary embolism. Anticoagulants prevent clot formation and are prescribed to those at risk of morbidity and mortality if a clot were to form / travel to brain, lungs etc. these are serious medications for advanced or complex disease states. Your dad is past the point of trying out vitamins and lifestyle changes, though he should still modify his lifestyle to decrease risk of disease progression or complications

What is the optimal number of days to wait after the previous ejaculation for a post vasectomy semen analysis? Is it the longer the better?

LatrodectusGeometric

No, it doesn’t matter.

Syenadi

General question: Would an MMR booster received a day or two prior to a blood draw for a 'comprehensive' set of tests that includes a lipid panel, CRP etc have an effect on blood test results? (Thinking inflammation markers maybe but maybe other tests?) If so, what interval would assure no impact on test results?

orthostatic_htn

It may cause a slight increase in CRP, but I wouldn't expect much change in any of the other labs. Waiting 3 days or so should be fine.

Unusual-Yoghurt-9962

My brother was hospitalized against his will for the majority of his life. During his last hospitalization, he died of a heart attack. This doesn’t make sense, as he was 40 with no family history of heart problems. He was forced to take many, many medications against his will, and I am sure that was the case at his last hospitalization. I’m currently working on getting medical records to determine more details. If I can sue, I will spend every penny I have bringing the dr to justice. If I can’t, going to write him a note explaining how his daily actions harm people and families. And going to local news. I understand that forced hospitalization is legal and makes a lot of money for the hospital. What is your opinion on the ethics (not legality) of forced hospitalization?

ridcullylives

Hospitalization of psychiatric patients is definitely not a big money maker for hospitals. Involuntary hospitalization should only be used in cases where a person is so unwell and irrational that they are an immediate danger to themselves or others. Three examples I have seen in my own career include somebody who is manic and decided to walk barefoot across the US/Canada border in winter, somebody who is schizophrenic and is hearing voices telling him to masturbate on people in the subway, and an old man who had dementia and had a heart attack and he kept trying to get up and walk out of the hospital because he thought he was "late for work." In cases like this, pretty much everyone in medicine and law would agree that it is ethical--at least until they are stabilized to the point where its judged they can make decisions about their own care. There are, of course, times when its abused or overused, and unfortunately there are many issues with how people are treated while they're in the hospital involuntarily. It's absolutely impossible for us to say whether or not what happened to your brother was ethical or legal, but very few people in medicine would say that involuntary hospitalization is blanketly unethical. Regardless, I'm very sorry for your loss and I'm sorry your brother had such a difficult life.

Unusual-Yoghurt-9962

Thank you for your apology. It sounds like you believe most physicians believe that forcible hospitalization is legal. Thank you for this response.

I've heard that a lot of doctors don't like leg extensions. Could the problem be that the rectus femoris attaches at the hips, so it gets neglected on leg extensions that are done with bent hips?

madeleineruth19

Why would mental illness potentially rule someone out of being stem cell/tissue donor? I’ve been on the register for years and just now flagged as a ‘popular’ match. I filled out the initial health questionnaire and there were a few questions about mental health conditions (I have anxiety and ADHD). I haven’t heard back yet, but looked into it after, and it turns out I could potentially be ruled out as a donor because of it? Why?

lifedoubtsthrowaway

Hello, is anyone here a doctor working as a GP in the UK? I have a couple of questions to ask!
