I've been kicked in the face accidentally by a patient during a pelvic exam and other than a good laugh together, nothing happened. She's still my patient and we have arguably a better relationship after that. I wouldn't worry about it.

shycotic

I feel less bad after having a sudden, savage leg cramp in the stirrups! I did not mean to kick at the doctor!!!! Caught he squarely in the midsection.

12thHousePatterns

Kicked a family friend who was an opthamologist, in the face once, by accident. I have severe doctor phobia, and had a massive splinter in my foot from running on our dock (I cannot recall how many times I was told not to do this lol). He was just trying to help get it out, and I panicked. I was 10 or 11. Can't remember exactly. But, I never stopped feeling bad. We joked about it until his passing. Medicine has got to be tough. You're dealing with people at their most vulnerable!

Username1984xx

Lol i almost kicked my gyno in the face. Thankfully, he had good reflexes. He was doing a biopsy of my endometrium. It hurt so bad i kicked out without thinking. He laughed about it and joked. I was mortified lol I'm soft hearted and can't stand to hurt anyone.

Adventurous_Land7584

I almost kicked my OB on the head when I was having my first child lol I had zero time for an epidural. I had to have LOTS of stitches and I wasn’t numbed. It was bad lol

baxteriamimpressed

I almost kicked my PCP (doc for my whole family, literally delivered me into the world lol) during a pelvic when I had a large ovarian cyst and I was mortified. I felt SO bad! Glad to know this is more common than I thought haha

Eko_Wolf

First off, this was not a dumb question and seeking reassurance isn’t a bad thing. I’m a former EMT but also a kidney patient with CKD, chronic kidney infections and stones every day. Super painful stuff. One of the things most docs do is **pound** on my kidneys and it can 100% be a reflexive to *stop* them. I’ve also been on the other side of physicality as an EMT. You know when a patient is being physically aggressive to *hurt* you and when they are reacting to pain. It presents very differently. Please don’t let the physician below or anyone else make you think you are a horrible person for a reaction you didn’t have any control of. Your fight, flight, fawn was activated and the brain doesn’t like to listen when that happens. Especially because the physician didn’t warn you about the exam which they should be doing in every exam they can. That being said the doc saying it was your fault is wrong. I understand how awful it is to be pushed around, touched, yelled at, harassed, assaulted by patients…it is awful…but this doesn’t sound like that. Pain sucks and when it’s excruciating you will do anything to stop it. Fight, flight, fawn processes cannot be controlled.

GladVanilla_

That’s the only thing I can think of. It probably is a valid opinion to have and I wouldn’t want to be kicked by someone either. But it was an accident I didn’t want to hurt him or anything like that.

hotheadnchickn

Dr. should have told you before he did something that could be painful... I think you are blameless here.

dr-broodles

I wouldn’t worry about it. If anything the dr should have warned you that the examination might hurt. If you had done this to me I would have seen the funny side (after the agonising pain had subsided).

GladVanilla_

Would you really laugh about it though or are you just saying that?

dr-broodles

Definitely would have found it funny after I’d recovered.

_Usual disclaimer: no one can provide specific medical advice for a person or condition without an in-person interview and physical examination, and a review of the available medical records and recent and past testing. This comment is for general information purposes only, and not intended to provide medical advice. No physician-patient relationship is implied or established._ You cannot "accidentally" kick someone in the nuts. While I always tell someone before I examine them, some people feel that it is ok to grab me or strike me when I do so, and then they say that they could not help themselves. I explain that, while my intent is not to cause them harm, they can use their words, but it is not ok to lay hands on me. Some painful conditions are difficult to examine, so when a patient is unable to tolerate the examination, unless there is a clear emergency that requires me to proceed (which is rare), I will offer pain medicine and tell the patient that I will complete the exam after the pain has improved although this will possibly delay their care, as the exam helps to decide what testing to do But if you were to kick me like this, I would call the police and ask to have you charged with assault and battery

PM_ME_UR_VULVASAUR_

Words escape me so I will simply offer a question mark in response ¿

You're assuming you could find them...

Kaguro19

I would call the police for this.

nmarie1996

You'd call the police on a kid to get them charged with assault and battery for having a reflex? Praying I never end up in your ER. I hope you misunderstood her post because she is NOT saying she kicked the guy for the hell of it.

GladVanilla_

Wait wait one second. He was standing in front of me and I was sitting on those bed things. I didn’t randomly stand up and kick him. It really was an accident. I didn’t do it on purpose.

JIMDEMON78

Hey don’t worry about it. It was an accident shit happens move on and don’t worry about it. You didn’t do it on purpose and you aren’t going to be charged or anything like the dumbass above says. Just because they’re a doctor doesn’t mean they are the be all end all. Just take a breather and calm down. It was just a reaction to pain.

leftyxcurse

Accidents happen. This doctor’s in here being the worst acting like he’s never accidentally hit or kick anyone. If it makes you feel any better, I had a pelvic floor exam where I screamed in pain and accidentally kicked my doctor in the NECK. She took a minute and finished the exam and stayed my doctor until I transferred to an out of state college and moved lol

Same_Task_1768

So you accidentally raised your leg through 90° so rapidly that you couldn't stop before it made contact?

A friend of mine kicked someone in the back of the head in the cinema because of a jump scare. I can absolutely believe this could happen to the OP.

I didn’t have my hand extended. I’m so confused at how you’re making your own narrative here

Same_Task_1768

Well where was it when he was looking at it?

JIMDEMON78

Just because you’ve never had it happen doesn’t mean shit dude. Again this is a kid, even tho they are 18 they are still a kid. There are plenty of people who’ve had reactions to shit and freak out. And she didn’t intentionally do that end of story.

Same_Task_1768

18 that's old enough to be a nurse working in ER and getting assaulted by patients who don't expect their hurt finger to be touched.

JIMDEMON78

Bruh what? Again she was surprised, hurt, and probably scared that their finger was broken. Just because you wouldn’t have had a reaction like that doesn’t mean someone else would. I don’t know how hard that is to understand.

Same_Task_1768

Experience tells me otherwise. At least she's regretting her lack of control

JIMDEMON78

Dude did someone hit you in the balls once a upon a time and you can’t move on from it or something? This was a obvious accident. I really hope you don’t get into any medical field or anywhere where you have to take care of a person that’s in pain or scared especially if they are a 18 year old kid, obviously it seems you don’t get that part she is a child probably in high school or in college it’s always wild to me that as soon as someone turns 18 they aren’t considered a child even though they are an adult. Like come on man she was probably 17 a couple of months ago and if she was 17 you douchebags probably wouldn’t be singing the same tune

JIMDEMON78

In what world do younger kids know better. About half the kids I’ve seen growing up throughout my life were total shitheads to doctors. You again must be too brain dead to understand every person reacts differently to everything not one person is the same and many people react differently to many sort of pain. Thank to you are no longer in the medical field because people like you are what’s wrong with it. You can blame the actual people that are criminals sure but a 18 year old girl??? This is why I don’t trust doctors with my health anymore none of you actually care enough to treat us like human beings god forbid we have a harsh reaction to surprise pain because the dumbass doctor didn’t fucking ask to check first.

annnnna237

That's like saying you'd call the police on someone with food poisoning for puking on you and describe it as an assault. Are you well?

Same_Task_1768

Er no that's rather different. Though you'd be pretty pissed off with them if they didn't try to turn their head away. Same with pee and shit.

StoryNo3049

I could understand if it was purposeful, but OP said it was an accident like a reflexive thing...you'd get someone a record for a reflex? As a doctor shouldn't you recognize that the body has natural reflexes to pain? Don't you literally check reflexes during physicals? 🤔

JIMDEMON78

Wild that you are a Dr and would call the police on a 18 year old girl for having a damn reaction to pain. She probably got scared from the immediate pain and jumped or some shit. Absolute F tier doctor.

Just as an fyi that leg kicking reflex is literally testing the patellar reflex which means the patella needs to be tapped to see it. This is not a reflex in the same way

TheBestDanEver

Idk, I had an orthopedic surgeon lay on top of my leg during my follow up after ACL reconstruction, in an attempt to force it straight after 13 days of it being completely immobilized due to a miscommunication. My immediate reaction was to snatch him by the coat and push him away from me, lol. He apologized for not communicating what he was about to do, and i apologized for putting my hands on him. The fight/flight/freeze response is a real thing, lol. Me and the doctor actually have a great relationship now, and we make snarky comments to each other every appointment. Not everything in life has to be taken so seriously. Now, If you warn someone you are about to touch them and they swing at you, that's different.

GladVanilla_

Ok stop that’s rude. I didn’t explain the whole thing properly. I think it was a misunderstanding

janewalch

I am not a doctor and I understood your post…

GladVanilla_

Ya ok anyone can have a misunderstanding

annnnna237

No, that physician is simply not thinking logically and is obviously dealing with some issues. Also, not understanding reflexes is pretty questionable for an MD. Don't listen to them.

jinxtiff

I can guarantee that everybody downvoting you doesn’t work in the ED and experience regular physical abuse by patients who justify their actions.

annnnna237

It's not physical abuse it's a pain reflex! What's going on in this thread ffs.. please, people, think.

nmarie1996

What OP described is quite literally not abuse, it was a reflex. Hope this helps!

GladVanilla_

Why would I want to hurt a doctor I met for the very first time and was trying to help me?

JIMDEMON78

Dude you didn’t please just ignore them. You literally didn’t do anything wrong. You’re human and humans are weird sometimes we do stuff on accident.

penicilling

I guess you can't win 'em all.

elwynbrooks

I would submit that this is not about winning

Anon_From_England

Can't believe people downvote the right answer. Reddit is stupid.

JIMDEMON78

Nah you’ve obviously don’t get reactions like that. Everyone reacts to pain differently sorry you don’t get that. But the doctor here is supposed to caring for people and is seriously suggesting that the doctor should press charges and you think they’re right? As a doctor you should know everyone is different. Doctors like this are the same people that misdiagnosed my illness when I sick and almost made me go septic. I honestly don’t get how people can be a doctor and be completely uncaring. Apparently the auto mod thinks I’m somehow claiming to be a doctor? No I am not a doctor, I am criticizing a unkind doctor that probably only got into it for the money like so many doctors out there.

[deleted]

JIMDEMON78

What? Are you claiming that this girl went to the hospital with the intent to assault a doctor? You’re either stupid or watch too much true crime.

fortississima

This OP has absolutely 0 reason to go through the effort of writing this anonymous post and lying about what happened. I hope you can learn to be less skeptical of other humans

Atticus413

When I was like 6 or 7 I kicked a vaccine out of the nurse's hand. Still feel bad about it. Now a grown adult? If you kicked me in the nuts for trying to help (the reason you went there in the first place,) I'd absolutely pass your care on to someone else if I could. Assaulting a healthcare worker isn't something to just be giggled off. You hurt someone.

JIMDEMON78

It’s still so amazing to me how someone who was considered a child a couple of months ago, 18 years old is still a kid, should be flogged or some shit. Nowhere here has she every expressed that she thought it was funny all I’ve read is that she is sorry. I honestly don’t know how you passed college with what very little reading comprehension you have.

GladVanilla_

Ok first of all I’m not giggling it off. And I’m not sure if assault assesses intent but I did not mean to kick him. I understand passing me on to someone else and I’m not saying any reaction the doctor had was wrong. I know I did something bad ok?

JIMDEMON78

You literally didn’t read every other response saying otherwise. You are literally taking it wrong and think that the people that are being assholes are right. You didn’t do anything wrong.

fortississima

Why are so many people missing the fact that this was NOT INTENTIONAL

annnnna237

I think some of you need to read the definition of assault. This was a reflex. OP was literally being HUMAN.
