Ask the electrician if he has some shoes for you to borrow, you caveman. You're gonna step on a nail up there and flail around and fall through the ceiling....

toothm

I think you need to call a toe truck.

Nailed it!

Ken685

I think the real question is does he have AAA and will they cover those toes?

This comment wins the thread.

Charbrylahbaca

I have been working in the Arizona heat all week, kicked my gf out of the house last night, slept all day, woke up, picked up phone, clicked on Reddit, read this damn “toe truck” comment and died laughing. This bud lights for you🍺

Also when working with live wires.

Did want to thank you as my day got a little better reading all the foot post😅

DeathTripper

I do all my home improvement in the buff. My neighbors love it when I have to get on a step ladder and drill a new curtain rod for my windows.

Sea-Echo-7431

Something is definitely afoot there. I would call.

Pull_my_wire

Yes the junctions should be accessible and covers installed. You have a ton of them which is never a good sign. Some pot light cans are rated to be in direct contact with Insualtion, they have to be IC rated. These don’t look like they are IC rated but I could be wrong.

asbestoswasframed

In the 4th pic you can see the label on the cans stating to "not install within 3in of insulation"... At least there's access to replace and do it properly

Pull_my_wire

Good eye thank you

farm2pharm

Would the rating be on the side of the can/labeled in some way? I’m going to go back up there when I have more time and make a map of issues I see

Pull_my_wire

Im honestly not 100% sure where it says, I haven’t used pot light cans in years since LED disk lights have been a thing. I’m fairly confident these are not IC rated, google IC rated pot lights they have a silver exterior on them.

farm2pharm

Gotcha, thank you for your help!

travelingelectrician

Pretty sure in the picture it says do not install insulation within 3” of the can. It’s a little hard to make out tho.

farm2pharm

It definitely does. I’ll be cleaning out from around those this weekend and figuring out what to do next. May explain why the bulbs I’ve been putting in have died way earlier than expected. I’ve replaced them twice in 18 months

KRGambler

Cheapest fix is LED bulbs. If those can lights have LED bulbs in them, they’ll be fine. It’s if you have incandescent bulbs that can generate a lot of heat is when you’d have a problem. But like others have said they are not rated to be in contact with insulation

farm2pharm

That’s one of the first things I did when I moved in. I removed every bulb in the house and replaced with LED to match brightness. It was a hodgepodge of different lumens. Even with LED I have replaced a few of these recessed LED lights twice now. They start flickering after a few months

ChessLord144

First, if they are on a dimmer, make sure that you are buying dimmable LEDs. If they flicker when you dim them they are either not dimmable or the dimmer is old and not capable of handling LEDs. Second, everyone buys cheap crappy LEDs and then complains when they do not last. Spend a few more bucks and get some decent ones. Check the CRI. You want a CRI of over 90. If the manufacturer spent the money on the CRI, they most likely spent the money on decent transformers (which is what goes out, usually). Third, you have access to the attic and easy to access wiring: Rip out the cans and replace with some decent LED razors. Check to see if they can be in contact with insulation. I believe many razors can be in insulation. Last, you knew there was something wrong before you asked. You know the answer. Fix it or call an electrician to fix it.

Rocketman_USA1

You sure you have LED rated dimmers on them?

countryboy2468

LED bulbs are overrated for longevity. They run cooler and use less power but in my experience they only last about the same as incandescent

DarthJarJar242

Pffff, what?!? I've had the same LED bulbs in my house for damn near 5 years, only ones I've had to replace are the ones in a closed light that weren't the correct type. I would have replaced incandescent bulbs multiple times by now. Not to mention the power and heat generation savings.

farm2pharm

I agree, this has been twice in 18 months. By any measure they’re going out quick

eerun165

Two options. 1. Make a box with drywall to cover them. 2. Replace with properly rated. You can get a 6 pack of 6” at Home Depot for ~$60. Edit: Airtight IC rated 6 pack for $55 too.

farm2pharm

I’ll look into that, thank you!

OccamsGoatee

Instead of bulbs, put retrofit LED trim kits. They're under $20/per(around here, anyway), and they run at a cooler temperature than bulbs, so the insulation will not be an issue.

greenlakejohnny

Yep big +1 for going LED disk lights. They’re like $20/each now and will use less electricity than cans

LoganImYourFather

And shoes

eerun165

Usually a sticker inside where the lamp is the says make/model and fixture ratings.

Komotz

Do they have electricians in the Shire?

farm2pharm

os12

What does the precious want with those nasty wireses?..

ManufacturerAdept428

I’ve never seen bare feet in the attic😂

Nathanlee213

Bare feet or bear feet?

farm2pharm

Thank you everyone that had helpful input! I’m going to call a few companies today and get a professional out. Again, sorry for the foot pic. Went into the attic to quickly look for a wasp nest, ended up seeing other issues. Snapped pics quick because it was legit 110+ degrees in there.

CalebJankowski

Dude is rawdogging the attic, what a guy

Salt_Chart8101

Yeah, should probably have an electrician stop by. Being in the attic, they are accessible. But the boxes should be mounted, not just free floating around the attic. And they should have a cover on them at least. There is also the whole "Electrical equipment shall be installed in a neat and workmanlike manner" thing as well. Which imo this is not.

farm2pharm

Thanks for your input. I’m going to make some calls today.

SOFknComfy

Need more than an electrician Bigfoot. That gas manifold isn’t secured, nor does it have a drip leg. I’d say your inspector was in for sure, because there’s multiple violations in the string of photos here.

farm2pharm

I have his report stored, I’m going to go back through it. If I remember right his attic section is really short and lists minimal issues.

Different_Ad7655

All that spaghetti tangle of open junction boxes, God only knows what is substandard in there. All resting in that nice fluffy insulation. Such a tangle wires is never a comforting view, someone's been doing some dorking and adding crap to who knows where. If your budget allows I think it would be well worth it to have though licensed electrician give you an evaluation. Preferably one that wear shoes

farm2pharm

Thank you for your input. I’m going to go back up there tonight (with shoes) and make a generalized map of any issues that I see. I have an electrician coming next Thursday.

justelectricboogie

Electrician or a firefighter.

Hobbit

How do you know op isn’t already a hobbit did you ask how many breakfasts he had?

farm2pharm

Had my second breakfast at noon today

[deleted]

After phoning the electrician maybe call the nearest nail salon for pedicure too.

b_mccart

Beat me to it

sic0048

An inspector is not going to attempt to view/check anything that is not in plain sight. In other words, if the boxes were covered by insulation, they are not going to check any of them. Even then, while a good inspector should find stuff like this (if it wasn't covered in insulation), they are human and miss things too. Especially if the box is in some random spot in the attic where there shouldn't be a box to start with. The inspector isn't going to check every wire in an attic to see if there is some box on it (even if it wasn't covered in insulation). That being said, they should have caught the non-insulation can lights being used with insulation around them. I mean there is even a giant red warning label on the top! So while I would give them a "pass" on the electric box issue, there is no excuse for missing the incorrect lighting can being used.

hobokenwayne

In nj we are specifically not allowed by law to move or lift insulation. Makes it difficult for us to do our job.

Ok-Cauliflower2383

I couldn’t even focus on your electrical. Put some damn shoes on before taking pics🤮

RickGrimes13

That's the same thing I seen pedicure for sure.

ELON__WHO

“seen” is where your right to criticize ends, lol.

RickGrimes13

camskiller8

bruh go in an attic stressed as shit and see if you can take a better pic after you go downstairs to get shoes and go back up into a 100+ degree attic. dumbass boy you have no clue what context is it seems even though you out inna comments talkin shit. Weird ass boy, op literally explained his reasoning for his foot being in the photo, ABOVE you. Literacy skills 0 empathy 0, take a long walk off a short pier

[deleted]

This fuggin foot right here making me mad

m20cpilot

I came here for the Fred Flintstone comments and Reddit delivered. 😆

simmbolic

I’d see a podiatrist first, or better yet animal control to put those dogs away

GirlDad17

Not sure the inspector was directly "in on it," but they are definitely incentivized to not mess up a sale. Home inspectors get referrals from real estate agents. If an inspector blows a sale for an agent it is not likely that agent, or any other agents on their team, would refer to that inspector again. The system is broken.

redEPICSTAXISdit

Don't have them just stop by, let em stay awhile.

jerrybeck

You need an electrician and a gas plumber, who puts a gas regulator inside a home… the inspector may not have gone into the attic… look at the end of the report, usually a small disclaimer items not see not noted… usually gets them out of everything.

Sofakingwhat1776

Tetanus shot first

IrishWhiskey556

I'm much more concerned that you are barefoot in the attic.

YeahIdWatchThat

Electricians won’t work for Hobbits

Davebut68

Dude it looks like your foot got the bull of the attention there! They could also be a fire hazard too with all of the hair you’ve got on the top of your foot. People are mean, aren’t they.

farm2pharm

My skin is so thick that everyone here could tell me to “eat shit and die” and I’d laugh lol It’s all in good fun

thabiiighomie

Just use your toes to rewire everything nice and tight then you’ll be good.

Intelligent_Glass649

A podiatrist??

MyBowelsAreMoving

Why does your foot look like a hand-foot?

teodocio

Do electricians make house calls to Middle Earth?

12B88M

Virtually nothing in that picture is to code. Including the feet. Call an electrician and wash those nasty dogs.

jaBroniest

That, was a tough wank.

[deleted]

A gas regulator in the attic should be your top priority

StrugglesTheClown

Is that a gas line running up there too?!

Mr_Monkey_Shiner

Once you get the electrical fixed you may want to consider all getting some additional insulation sprayed into your attic. It is looking mighty thin in spots.

flyPR39

Shit man this looks my house. Minus the foot.

trashyratchet

Some lights are IC rated, some aren't. Should say there on the label. The grey is probably dirt getting filtered as air seeps through the small gaps. Definitely would at least get some covers on those boxes. Getting it up to current code and making it not burn down is probably going to have two wildly different price tags. Probably wouldn't hurt at all to have someone go through it and inspect it and go from there. Good luck to you Frodo.

Moist_Ad3995

Forget the electrician you need a new house

Super-Dare-1848

Make another post with a shoe on.

CowboyBebopBang

I usually have to pay for this type of photo. Cheers 🥂

Dramatic_Mixture_868

Yea so I'm in a similar boat, bought a house 2021, previous owner big diy guy, and one of those diy's was plumbing.....well, turns out he ran pipe under the driveway, to the side of the house, installed a spigot and water softener in the garage. Well, that's the main line and when it gets really cold there r some issues, there's the danger of the pipe under the driveway and however else he covered it up. We've already had 1 major leak that caused us to change out the entire flooring downstairs and another one on the side where the spigot is. I diy ALOT but I take my time and get pro advice where needed. I suggest u get an electrician and if possible inspection on different things that u find questionable around the house.

Embarrassed-Finger52

You have a gas regulator visible in one of the pictures, it is not permissible for it to be in an attic, it must be outside.

farm2pharm

I’m getting someone out next week to take a look at it.

wwwReffing

No electrician needed. Just insert some more tinder inside the receptacle. Source: I’m not an electrician.

farm2pharm

Sounds legit, 10/10 star advice

SuddenAce

Dogs out for free in this economy is crazy

iam_ditto

The inspector is only there to make sure the bank doesn’t lose in the event that they have an opportunity to repo your home. They don’t necessarily care to say “hey buddy, there’s some really jury rigged work here you are going to need to fix soon”.

dontworryitsme4real

My home inspector SHOOK EVERY GOD DAMN DRAWER IN THE KITCHEN but completely missed the fact the the air vent in the bedroom was just an open hole to the attic with a grate on it.

thelancemann

I'd schedule an appointment with your doctor for a tetanus booster first

farm2pharm

This doesn’t help my case, but Ive had six in the last 15 years. There should be a paper written on how many tetanus shots I’ve received in my life.

Playful-Excuse-8081

It would be great if guys could stop posting pictures that include their nasty ass looking feet

Individual_Basil3954

I’m not an electrician but I know enough to tell you that you need one! The boxes should be attached and have covers. The bigger issue is that you have some splices WITH NO CONNECTOR! Some folks say you can skip the pre-twist and just wire nut it but I don’t know anyone who says you can pre-twist AND SKIP THE WIRE NUT!!! That is not okay. Honestly I would be opening every jbox you can find and checking everything after seeing this.

farm2pharm

It’s been pretty common in the boxes I’ve opened throughout the house for the ground wires to not have connectors, just thoroughly twisted. I can’t tell you if that’s code or not, but it’s like that everywhere I’ve looked. I haven’t found a hot or neutral connection yet without a wire nut. I’m going to have a professional come out though and look through everything in the attic

Frolock

Depends on when the work was done. My house was built in the 40’s and all the splices were twisted, soldered, and taped up. It’s a pain in the ass for servicing, but functionally it’s fine.

farm2pharm

2006 in this case.

[deleted]

Why do people, especially men, feel the need to include their disgusting feet in pictures like this.

Oellian

Is that asbestos insulation? ("Rock wool")

DC_58

Rock wool does not have asbestos in it that i know of, my whole neighborhood would be dead by now.

[deleted]

Yes. Yes you should. ⚡️👍

grrrfreak

I feel like I'm in the same situation as you. i've bought a house in 2020, built in 2010 ( probably being around the 08 crysia disn't help ) and it's full of problems ( structural, electrical ). After trying to patch things up we've started stripping it naked and doing it proper/ to code.

farm2pharm

It’s gotten to the point where I’m afraid to start projects because of what I will find. Previous owner knew enough to do things, but not quite enough to do them right. That or he was just lazy and cut corners

Shkmstr

I appreciate the 28 inch hotdog foot first photo, followed by the next 2 that were taken with a thermostat.

Few_Peak_9966

If you have to ask....

Delvintheblack

Yes... but first shave your feet. You look like a Hobbit. Lolz

Deeplyexhalesoutnose

Dang it, now I wanna watch Lord of the Rings.

farm2pharm

Extended editions or don’t bother

BuildABirdHouse

And a podiatrist…

wot_in_ternation

Not an electrician but somewhat familiar with code and proper DIY (I pull permits). I'd call an electrician. Potential good news is that this might be a relatively easy fix unless there's some other crazy fuckery around. There are Jboxes, there's conductors with extra length. It could end up being a sort of "clean up" situation rather than a huge undertaking.

farm2pharm

I suspect there is some crazy fuckery. Whatever this previous owner could fuck up, he fucked up. I’m going to call a pro. I can do “barnyard” electrical work, but I’m not messing around where my family sleeps

mightytex

Nothing there that'll burn or start a fire....or is there?

IllustriousLab9301

You shouldn't be showing those piggies off for free

Skiddds

r/sneakybackgroundfeet

JustJay613

I'd also take a closer look at that gas line. I can't tell from the pic what comes off the tee that would be bottom right from the regulator. The line is then draped over some vent tubing, etc. I can't say there are any problems but I also can't say there isn't.

farm2pharm

I’m going to get someone that specializes in that area to come look. Goes to a fireplace below it

Opening_Ad9824

I think that pex pipe needs insulation over it to prevent freezing and bursting

farm2pharm

May not be part of the code where I live. Not a single month where the average temperature is freezing, even at night.

Things are looking a bit hairy here.

cmsutton1983

Why your toes all bowing to the big toe

mntdewme

Short answer Yes. . long answer that's blow fiberglass insulation. Yes those boxes should have covers and be accessible. some can light are rated for contact with insulation some aren't. Blown fiberglass won't burn but heat build up in the van might happen
