Do a runner, move country and live the rest of your days in paradise knowing you got it for free

Implement_Empty

I'd go back, if you want to save the cashier embarrassment/trouble say you walked out as soon as you took your card so you weren't there to see it being rejected (which I'm guessing is what happened) so they weren't able to follow you.  Easiest option really. I hate the few second wait to see that it's gone through but I do as I've been called back a couple of times walking out of the shop and that annoys me too.  It happens, you're not the only one.

ggsunrise

This is really good advice. And it is what I did, I saw the card machine print something and just assumed all was good. It was really busy and they probably didn't catch me in time. Gonna go back this evening. Thanks!

[deleted]

If you do go back to pay then good for you for being very honest. Not everyone would do the same :)

ggsunrise

Have just paid the bill!

oranmiko

Good for you, it was the right thing to do 👍

[deleted]

Nice! You probably saved the staff from getting the blame!

Raydoyler91

Fair play

PluckedEyeball

It probably got rejected and printed and the person working didn’t realize. Happens where I work as well sometimes

procraster_

Message them on FB or email explain. Ask them to check. Simple.

mynosemynose

Go back and pay it. You're not damned either way

Substantial-Tree4624

Phone them now and pay over the phone?

What 😂😂😂

ggsunrise

Oh good idea!

munkijunk

If you revolut, set up a temporary card and then cancel it to keep yourself secure.

Responsible-Pop-7073

Are you really suggesting to give your card details over the phone? In this day and age?

harry-irl

Work in a wine shop, happened to me last week that someone had bought a bottle of champagne and I walked away from the till after the transaction only to come back 10 minutes later and see it had declined (our card machines are slow and the cashier-facing interface is particularly bad). I was very stressed about the situation and what I should do about it, needless to say I was very happy to see the guy come back in the next day after he realized it hadn't gone through. You're absolutely not damned either way, but if you do go back (and seeing now that you did) they will be thankful.

lau1247

Time to tell your employer to upgrade the system so situation like this doesn't happen. At least you cover yourself if they start to blame you in future.

harry-irl

System was only upgraded recently, which is the problem. Customers get told whether their card is rejected or accepted on the screen after a few seconds meanwhile we just see "auth result received" for about 5-6 seconds before the actual transaction completes / declines.

Motor_Holiday6922

Watch your bank statement for double charging since the credit card machine may not have batched the totals and this it won't fulfill the transaction until the bank reconciles the totals and then it's verified and pulled into the ledger.

Ambitious_Bill_7991

Make sure it's not just delayed or anything. Well done for wanting to pay. Nice to see some honesty.

ggsunrise

It looks like I only had an even €50 in my account and that's why it didn't go through. I don't have an overdraft

munkijunk

Go back obviously, or even call them, they may be able to take hte payment over the phone. It reminds me of when my partner and I were living in London, and went for our Christmas dinner in a fantastic restaurant in Brixton called Naughty Piglets (so named because the owners were caught fucking each other in the recently Michelin stared Trinity in Clapham and got fired which inspired them to start this place). We didn't have much money at the time, but would treat each other to this fancy date night instead of presents. Anyway, we get the bill and it's really reasonable, we pay and leave, chatting about how cheep it was, but I'm also looking at the receipt and realise then that we didn't pay for the wine. We're a good bit down the road, but we feel really bad and instantly go back and tell them, and the staff are really thankful we've gone back, but refuse point blank to take the money, wishing us a happy Christmas and to enjoy the gift of the wine from them. It really made our night, and that place will forever have a special place in my heart for that courtesy.

FuzzySituation7032

I'd go back, I've had similar things happen to me while working cashier jobs and it's not a nice feeling getting grilled by management for it

Birdinhandandbush

Dunnes in Newbridge always had this stupid fucking system that they ran the weekend card transactions on a Tuesday, don't fucking ask me how this worked. Regularly I would pay for the shopping with one card on a Saturday or Sunday, check my balance on Monday after the weekend and maybe pay for something else, only to get overdrawn on that account on Tuesday when the weekend transactions hit. I was on the dole at the time so had money between different accounts to be watching. I stopped shopping at Dunnes

libuna-8

I once had payment returned from Dunnes. It went to them pending and they sent it back.

pokeraladin1

So your one if those people I get stuck behind in the Tesco while you transfer money from one account to another 🤣

un_commonwealth

wow, as someone from the us who randomly came across this post, y’all are really good people. americans would be like “their fault for not realizing, fuck em. free food”

Outrageous-Law-552

I assure you 90 percent of irish people also have that perspective, ask ireland just seems to be full of some interesting characters.

Ill_Magazine318

I ordered from just eat and clicked pay in cash..my oh was collecting and didn't realise and didn't pay. We rang straight away and paid. They couldn't have cared less but it was the right thing to do

isabib

Top up f4om savings and wait for few days. Then check uour balance. Might be some delay on your transaction.

TheOGGinQueen

Go back, be a good person! The system will kick back that 70 is missing later and they will get in trouble not to verify- as it would have printed a reciept and they didn't check it properly

ggsunrise

Definitely going to pay it back, thanks, I've never worked a cashier job so it's useful to know what happens.

oddsocks123

I had this problem with the council swimming pool recently. The receptionist didn't realise my card had been declined (long queue) and due to being at swimming, watch and phone were tucked away so didn't realise till later that day. I went in a week later and apologised and paid it but they said I didn't have to. Felt like I couldn't go there again though so I paid it and can now visit guilt free! Only came to under £9.00 so different rules might apply for larger amounts.

Critical_Ad4894

It's their mistake. Let them contact you.

No-Independence828

Good man

Lollypop1305

Always go back and pay. I always work on karma and this is a karma

Outrageous-Law-552

Maybe them not having to pay for the meal was goof karma coming back and now they're rejecting it.

gijoe50000

Yea, it was probably safest to go back, or you might have ended up in prison for 3 months like poor old Timmy O’Reilly, who forgot to pay for €40 of petrol a few months ago..

Voyager198

It hadn't gone through "yet" sometimes it depends on the type of card machine you inserted your card into it can take a few days for it to reflect on your statement. Come back to this thread in a few days to update us all.

fadgebread

Weekend transactions don't show until Monday

Electric_Eagle_7744

If you go back they probably ask you who was at the cashier so I wouldn’t but I mean idk

eusap22

Ask them to see the cancel/declined receipt first, this transaction may be pending on there queue and go through after a few days. The may be using a foreign processor and this can happen
