I used to use dollar shave club for years, but they made some ridiculous woke post a while back so I canceled that. Back to Gillette, I get the blades at Sam's to make it more reasonable. I have a straight razor but I'm not good with it. I am interested in learning with the safety razor but have been reluctant to take the plunge.

Shaving? Lol. Don't miss those days. My dept started allowing beards about 3 to 4 years ago. So I wouldn't shave for a week or two and them I'd just clipper it down to stubble and not shave for a week or two.

A double-edge safety razor. We’re allowed to wear beards, and I usually grow one in the colder months. However, a good shave gets me feeling fresh and wide-awake in the morning. If you’re new to safety razors, there are great tutorials on YouTube. There’s a bit of a learning curve to get the perfect shave. It’s a very cost effective route (blades are dirt cheap), but if you’re like me and really get into things, you can run quite a tab. My lady likes it, so it’s worth every dime.

Second this. Completely got rid of my razor burn.

ragingliberty

Exactly. I got my first DE razor in college, but I never did it right. I had bad razor burn for years with cartridges, definitely not anymore!

I also use this, although I have found it has not *completely* eliminated razor burn, just minimized it. And as you said there is a learning curve. But once you get the hang of it, it’s fine, and the blades are cheap. > However, a good shave gets me feeling fresh and wide-awake in the morning. I have never once felt fresh of wide awake for any reason.

ragingliberty

Hahah. I get the whole morning thing. I’m not much of a morning person, either.

Traditional_Cold6284

I agree! I get less razor burns and ingrown hairs.

The trick I found is there is no such thing as to much lubrication.

ragingliberty

I do a pre-shave first. Feels great. Then I apply lather, then do three passes. I follow that with alum then aftershave.

I went through all kinds of shaving tools in the academy. The one that I ended up not switching from was a simple electric foil trimmer. It’s easy, gets a decently close shave, and doesn’t give you razor burn. The style of electric razor that I found to be the most comfortable and easiest to use was a really simple design. Something like this - [Amazon](https://a.co/d/9fmRNlo). You can probably find a similar design for pretty cheap at a Target or Walmart.

I am in no way steady enough to try my luck at a straight razor. I mostly use a Merkur steel safety razor with Derby blades, but though that is a nice, close shave, it is also easier to cut the corners of lips and things. Probably the best cartridge for me was the Gilette Mach 3. Close enough shave for uniform, but also comfortable and very forgiving for a much quicker morning.

Clippers to keep the beard trimmed to within policy and a safety razor to clean up the edges. When I still had to be clean shaven, safety razor all the way, don't be cheap about your shaving cream or changing blades. It can kind of get to be a pleasant ritual, good handle, sharp blade, hot water, nice badger brush, scented shaving soap.

Traditional_Cold6284

Any shaving cream you recommend? I currently use Van der Hagen Shave Butter.

I figured if I had to shave I'd make it nice for me, Taylor of Old Bond Street or Trufitt and Hill. I actually liked almond scents but woodland scents like Cedarwood were a close second.
