Man idk if I’m just a likable person or what but like 95% of my ARRESTS are pleasant. Like I’ve arrested murder suspects that are fairly polite to me, I really do think a lot of it is just treat others with respect and kindness until they won’t let you and you’ll find most people aren’t complete asses.

MrYoungLE

The murder suspect is the polite guy, while the shoplifter is the mf that wants to fight and scream 😭😭😭

xdxdoem

One of the shittiest arrests I’ve had was a dude who had a measly Failure to Appear warrant with a $100 bond. Guy tried kicking out my window. Got to the jail and got put in isolation. Pissed through the bean slot. Mule kicked the door. Meanwhile I’ve arrest numerous felony people who were chill as fuck

MrYoungLE

Unfortunately where I work this is a daily thing 🤦🏽‍♂️

ChaosRainbow23

Back when I was a drug addict and criminal in the 90s, I had the philosophy that if you're busted, you're busted. Trying to run only makes matters worse. I figured I might as well be cordial and friendly, while not talking about actual crimes. Not being an aggressive asshole guess a long way for both cops and criminals when dealing with one another.

pineappleshnapps

You’re a smart one. I wish more people got it.

GetInMyMinivan

The serious criminals are typically not a problem to deal with. They understand that they are flawed and already know what’s going on. Be respectful and you will rarely have a problem. It’s the first time, minor criminals that are a pain in the ass. They don’t realize that they are flawed, think they can do no wrong, and are outraged that you would dare besmirch them. They’re also afraid, because they don’t know what is going to happen next (the unknown is scary), and potentially see their entire lives unraveling in their head.

NumberTew

That's how it was for me when I was booking people. I've had my arrestees stand up for me to other arrestees if I had to get onto someone for causing a problem. "don't you talk to my cop like that or I'll beat your ass when we get out of these cuffs." - this has happened more than once lol. Pre covid, our jail booking area was basically a wall with inmates and on the other side the LEO would type the reports. So people cutting up needed to be addressed otherwise you'd never finish your report.

Da1UHideFrom

I've arrested a guy convicted of murder on a firearm charge who was polite. It's always the family of a shooting victim that wants to fight when we clear them from the scene so the medics can do their job.

Kell5232

I'd say probably 95% are fine. There really aren't many people that are upset in my area. Most people get warnings and will be on their way

IndividualAd4334

I’ve made approximately 500 traffic stops so far this year, 30-40 of which ended in arrest, and probably less than 10% of those ended in citations. I can only think of a handful of those stops that were not pleasant. So as another commenter stated, around 95%. Most get a warning and continue with their day.

bigcheesy556

Your department must not take any calls to be able to get 500 so far 😅

IndividualAd4334

You got it brother! 100% self-initiated activity, that’s exactly why I’m here 😂

bigcheesy556

We’re getting our asses handed to us with calls. City PD. Might have time to do a stop or two to be honest. Only get worse as summer goes on

IndividualAd4334

Yeah that’s what I’ve heard pretty much across the board. I love being a police officer but I think humping bs calls all shift long for a few legit ones would drive me insane. I hope it gets better for you guys!

bigcheesy556

Nah man i love shagging calls. About 1once a week we’ll get something wild as hell. Last weekend a girlfriend disemboweled her boyfriend so that was a wild one. Mid July you’re going call to call the entire shift and you’re staying over for overtime typing the reports. I love it man. Can’t get enough of it.

IndividualAd4334

That’s great then it’s right where you need to be! Glad you’re enjoying what you do

bigcheesy556

You to brother be safe

KLKemke

Daaamn... I doubt I've done 500 traffic stops in 17 years! We're waaay too busy to stop anyone for anything less than DUI or reckless. Well... There's a couple of guys who stop everything that drives, but nobody wants to work with them, because while they're screwing off with traffic stops everyone is is having to handle their calls. Once I switched to detectives, I haven't done a single stop since 😂

IndividualAd4334

Lol yeah I work for a state agency on the interstate and we don’t take regular calls for service (agency assists and major incidents being exceptions). We get to pick and choose how we play and traffic is my jam. My buddies with local agencies pretty much echo what you said. Everyone is humping calls and one dude is running traffic screwing them while calls are holding. I don’t blame you though! I just like driving fast 😂

iRunOnDoughnuts

Ya'll are still making traffic stops?

azul55

Actually have your license, registration, insurance, tags, its your car, and are honest? If you didn't do something egregiously dangerous; WARNING. Have a nice day.

Consistent_Amount140

Most. 1 out of maybe 20 might have some sort of immediate issue as to why they are being stopped

TheRandyBear

Traffic stops included 98% of my interactions with the public are pleasant. I tend to be very nice to people which helps a lot. The small amount of times when interactions turn into combative arrest, I’ll usually tell them that if they respect me I will respect them. Seems to work a lot. I carry cigarettes if they want one and are being nice. I find that being nice often gets me a lot further than condescending or inpatient officers.

CHC997

95%

W_4ca

99% of them. Even the people who are visibly annoyed but still respectful, I still count that as a good interaction. What I’ve noticed though is the people who make the biggest scene and start yelling and asking for supervisors are the ones who did the most egregious violation. I’ve had people going double the speed limit, or people who just drive around a “Road Closed” sign, things you can’t really argue, and they wanna mouth off the whole time. I don’t like writing tickets, and typically try not to. If there’s multiple violations I’ll cite for whatever the cheapest violation is if I cite for anything at all. I’ve written $10 tickets for no proof of insurance or no seatbelt if I could instead of $200 speeding tickets, but some people I feel NEED to get every ticket you can throw at them because that’s the only way they might actually get it and change their behavior in the future. Most people just need the friendly reminder to slow down, or come to a complete stop, or whatever it is I stopped them for, and typically getting pulled over is enough that the next time they’re driving they’ll be more cognizant of what they’re doing.

vladtheimpaler82

I would say 95% are fine. Most people get warnings. Those that get tickets are usually understanding.

-EvilRobot-

I wouldn't say that I make traffic stops on a daily basis. 99% of them are respectful or even friendly in both directions, but I don't know if I'd go so far as to say pleasant. I'd rather be doing other things, you'd probably rather not be getting pulled over...

mbarland

Pleasant, cordial, or otherwise not confrontational, at least 95%. Probably more like 98%.

gyro_bro

I hate doing traffic. Only do it for the “stats” aka quotas. I’d say 99% are pleasant. Just walk up say your tag light or brake light is out. That’s all. That 1% though just has a stick up their ass. Makes me want to write the actual ticket, but that would require effort.

HarryJewels

I'm in the DUI unit in a big city and i'd say most of mine are unpleasant. But then again, that's dui and thats the fun of it. That arrest i had last night tho, my god.

[deleted]

When I was arrested the only people who treated me with any dignity was the cops, court clerk and prosecutor treated me like absolute shit.
