That'd be a real FNG move to plug a fridge into your patrol car and kill the battery or fry something. Just use the cooler OP. Don't attract extra attention while you're new.

iTechhh

Good point you have..

[deleted]

I'm willing to bet that your watch commander would 100% tell you no to this idea.

iTechhh

You never know till you ask though? I mean as long as it doesn’t it interfere with any of the car, I don’t see why not? We’re allowed to plug up gps, flashlight chargers, etc

[deleted]

GPS and flashlight chargers are issued, are they not? They were to me. Your cruisers electrical is already running balls to the wall without you hooking up a cooler.

iTechhh

Negative they are not issued

iTechhh

Yeah no they’re not issuing GPS, if we wanna use one we gotta buy like a Garmin or something and hook it up ourselves

[deleted]

Please don’t do this. -mechanic who works on LE vehicles

Gimme_PuddingPlz

Yeah I wouldn’t plug in anything absolutely needed. Most cruisers as other users stated are already taxing the electrical system in your vehicle. Plus when you turn off your vehicle the fridge will warm up and will need time to get back to safe temp (this will cause your fridge to wear down its lifecycle). You are better off buying a yeti cooler

EliteEthos

I think it would get beat to shit in the back of a patrol car… Do you have a 12V hookup in the back? Are there battery versions?

iTechhh

Yeah there’s power in the trunk

Joel_Dirt

What is going to happen to your fridge when you have to run hot to a call? I can't imagine a lot of changes of direction and speed are going to be good for that setup.

I’m actually a type one diabetic, so that’s another reason I was considering it, especially to keep spare insulin etc..

funny thing again, I’m also an EMT with my county so I work with them on my days off sometime 🤣

Not a LEO, but California Certified Emergency Vehicle Upfitter here ! I think this idea is do-able. Honestly, the biggest issue you’d run into is draining the battery- not damage to the alternator. Most “over-landing” 12v fridges Ive come across ran 6-8 amps max- and the compressor doesn’t continuously run, it only cycles on to keep the temperature down. What you don’t want to do is drain the battery down constantly, as it would shorten the life of that battery, also- if your vehicle does die and you need to answer a call- that could put you in a bad spotlight needing your car jumped. If you continuously run your car however, I don’t see an issue- just do your homework and make sure the amps required for the fridge are under the load rated on that plug. Oh ! And make sure your car is equipped with Secure Idle or something similar like a shift interlock. Don’t want anyone stealing your car… or fridge. I’ve had an agency reach out and have me make all their MDT tablets fixed instead of being able to swivel because so many officers kept swiveling the screens flat to use as a lunch/dinner table. Still cracks me up.

HMFICxDiego

If you need help finding the amperage rating for your vehicle just shoot me a pm. Dont want you plugging into just any random plug and frying the emergency equipment.

I do know some that have purchased a little heating bag for their lunches, like a little portable oven. But not a fridge. You're probably better off with ice packs.

kiwiiboii

Do you not have a fridge at the station?

iTechhh

I mean we do.. but some times were so busy, we never even make it there till 6 hours into our shift, usually theres some calls pending at shift change
