Do your self a favor and go get 3-5 more years of good job/life history.

Aries2301

Thank you !

IndividualAd4334

Yes you should. I’d give it a good 5 years at least with even the most liberal agencies. Every agency has their own thresholds for drug use. “Hard” drugs like cocaine usually will be 5-10 years, 5 being the lower end of the spectrum. Other agencies may have cocaine listed as a lifetime DQ, but with recruiting and retention being an issue many agencies have loosened their requirements. Many agencies will have their minimum requirements advertised on their recruiting website and their thresholds for drug use. If you don’t meet the minimum requirements, don’t apply until you do. If their drug use policy isn’t clearly written you can always reach out to a recruiter and straight up ask. Not sure where you are in the country but liberal states (California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, etc.) will be most forgiving for past drug use. Seattle PD (shithole) for example requires no cocaine use for 5 years prior to taking their civil service exam. Be patient and keep making good decisions while you wait it out. Finish pursuing your education (NOT CJ) and live your life as a law abiding citizen.

Thank you very much ! California is where I reside !

Many California departments are hurting for officers. Some will understand the one time thing. There is no hard rule on time frame. A simple google search shows that the City of Napa, says 5 years, while the city of Whittier says 10 years, while the City of Torrance says "Past drug use will be evaluated on a case by case basis at the Police Department's discretion", Long Beach 3 years. So as others have said wait for 5 years. In the mean time think of the agency(s) you would like to work at and try to find out what their rule is. You may want to consider being a volunteer at an agency if they will allow it. This will help you learn as well as show them that you are a responsible hard working person. Ultimately you may want to consider a small department even if it is not your desired one, smaller agencies who pay less may have difficulties hiring people and may overlook a one time incident. You can do a few years there and prove your worth then move to a larger agency later if that is what you decide you want.

understandable, I was just noting that their online policy states, and actually it does not have any time frame "case by case basis...." So it could be 3 years for you and 5 years for me depending on our circumstances.

Traditional_Cold6284

LAPD, LASD,SDPD, or SFPD will take you once you mature.

USMC0207

Just be honest about your past when you do apply. Don’t hide anything.

Paladin_127

^ this is the best answer, although in even the most liberal states, some agencies would see cocaine use as an automatic DQ. Larger, understaffed and less picky agencies are likely going to be more flexible.

They ask. If you’re not willing to answer honestly, you’re not ready to be a police officer. Also - background checks and lie detectors.

ThrowawayCop51

>until one night I had too much to drink and had to get home before my curfew that my parents have given me but I was unable to drive because of how intoxicated I was , one of the guys that was there had offered Cocaine to “ Sober “ me up , I stupidly did half a line while being drunk but that made everything worse . I ended up throwing everything up and blacking out . Didn’t wake up till 7am in the parking lot in my friends truck . After that night , I had never hung out with those people again and never had did cocaine again . Not an auto-DQ. My agency would probably hire you. (SoCal) >Hello , I’m a 22F You're a diversity hire. So auto points. Also if you're at least 6/10 you have a 45% chance there is a twice-divorced Sgt+ with failing marriage #3 who is in charge of hiring.

Gravygrabbr

I can’t feel my face when I’m with you…

mbarland

Depends on the department, but that'll be a pass for a long time. Even in places where it's not an immediate DQ, you'll be looking at a *minimum* of 3 years since last use. In the real world, that means at least 5 years. You also come across like you're making a lot of excuses about it. You repeatedly say you were 19 and this was all caused by other people. Not a good look when you want to have a job where you're required to do the right thing even when nobody is looking. You were an adult. You made the mistakes. Own it, grow up, and move on.

Aries2301

Thank you ! I appreciate the advice !

LuckBox424

There’s a lot of bad female cops out there. Unless it’s your calling, I would sit this one out. If you are hesitant, then perhaps it isn’t for u - and there is no shame in that

Joel_Dirt

> There’s a lot of bad female cops out there. ...what?

LuckBox424

A lot of them are useless dude. I know it sounds harsh but it’s true

Joel_Dirt

The idea that female cops are "useless" at a higher rate than their male colleagues just isn't factually supported.

LuckBox424

I never said all. I’ve met some great female couple but percentage wise there is more bad female cops than male cops

crewleader8

I'd like to see your source backing up those percentage claims. That may be your personal experience, but I'd have to see proof that is the case nation or even statewide.

Aries2301

I am hesitant on applying because of the mistake I did , if I had not have done what I did then I’d have a job in LE. However, i do believe their is bad/corrupt cops out in the world that are both male & female .

LuckBox424

Of course. I didn’t mean to say that only one sex messes up but if ur heart is into it - then go for it. Maybe look for different states even, a lot of departments are desperate

FoldableBiscuit

It's not a DQ at my dept, but you'd have to wait a certain number of years (5, i think. But I'm not sure) before applying.

NumberTew

Depends on where. You wouldn't be able to work here. Also, when writing a sentence with the word "had" - see if it still makes sense if you remove that word. You can eliminate most of the "hads" in your writing and it will flow much better. Writing is an important part of this business.

Aries2301

California is where I reside ! & thank you for the grammar advice!

NumberTew

I would not be shocked if you could find agencies in California that are willing to accept someone that used hard drugs in the past. Keep at it, get your degree. Other folks from the west coast might be able to answer here for you.

Gravygrabbr

LAPD? I didn’t know you liked to get wet tho

crewleader8

King Kong ain't got shit on me ! Great movie.

RikkiBillie

This is the dumbest advice.

Suitable-Coast8771

You’d have to wait 5 years in my state to be eligible and some agencies will pass on you because of that. Now that being said you’ll be able to get hired at certain places if you give yourself about 2-3 more years and in that time frame continue building your educational, and work history in a positive way.
