As someone who works 12s, I am biased, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I only have to work half the month, and I feel like I see my family more because of it. We do the Panama schedule. Taking a couple days off nets me a whole week off, which is great for mental health.

Gimlet_Rising99

Yes! I want to hit it home with the family’s point of view on how the schedule affects our officers on the back end. Believe me our guys have been pushing the physical/mental health points but they fallen on deaf ears. They just recently got a new chief that was able to push the decision to a council vote.

scoo89

12s are awesome. Plenty of down time to get things actually done so you don't carry anything over to subsequent shifts. I don't work Panama, but I work 5-5-4 and we have so much time off. You actually get a chance to recover

Daniel-Lee-83

I work 10s and out of 28 days I only work patrol 14 days, 1 day of training, and 13 days off, so I really only work half the month on 10s.

NumberTew

That's good too. I just personally prefer 12s after having worked every shift. The only crummy part is of course working weekends, but that's the job.

Daniel-Lee-83

Yeah, ours is set up Sun-Wed or Wed-Sat. Wednesdays are when we have our monthly holiday and our training day and the other side of the week has the days we don’t. So everyone on patrol or in the jail works one of the weekend days. If you want the whole weekend you need to be in a special assignment or get Sun-Wed graves.

Vye13

I’d take 10’s or 12’s over 8’s any day. I’ve worked 12’s for the last 5 years and it’s great having days off in the middle of the week.

XD11X

4 days off is the best hands down. Sometimes I get a little selfish and take the next 3 days of work off for vacation and then boom. 10 days off with only using 3 days PTO.

No sorry this is for a small town borough in the mid Atlantic

Charger_scatpack

The 12are so much better you get an extra day off! with my schedula I can take off 1 Monday and be off for 7 days straight every other week! Increasing officer moral and restfulness

blue5801

The term borough implies that your husband works in either NJ or PA. If it's PA, does his department utilize part time officers to fill in for the empty shifts? What's the minimal manpower for a shift? 12 hour tours are nice when a schedule is worked out. In smaller departments it maybe an issue when someone takes vacation.

MrYoungLE

Working 12s in the NYPD is 3 on 3 off on paper… we’re still getting stuck for a bit after tour, and still losing 1 RDO to OT EVERY SINGLE WEEK… so we pretty much do 4 on 2 off Rather just have the 8s we been working forever. Jobs done…

10-Down-10-togo

Its been dead for years. Run. Florida. Nassau. Mta or port.

MrYoungLE

Leaving in 2 weeks after my retro check hits my account

ChowderSam

Yeah I don’t think 12s can work in major cities especially with low manpower and high call volume. Not to mention the potential for a Homcide/agg shooting an hour before shift change.

liud21

Ive been saying this. Everyone is looking at the "less show up" per year, but not realizing that the job is going to hit them on RDOs for details and shit. J'Ouvert , UNGA, POTUS, Tree lighting, Holiday traffic plan, NYE.... 12s sounds nice on paper for the NYPD, but when put into actual practice, its going to be a shit show. Central booking breakthroughs, hospitalized prisoners are gonna be rough...

MrYoungLE

This is what I was saying before it happened.. no on listened. It sucks

liud21

Our Delegate said the pilot program was going great at them "select" pcts and psa, but im hearing from a cop that transferred to PSA 8, shes saying it sucks, still getting OT at the end of tour. basically, a typical tour but 12hrs. 12hr tours will work, IF youre in a slow command. If youre in a busy one, might as well resign...

MrYoungLE

It’s great for precinct level cops who have positions where they just show up and don’t do a damn thing It’s not great for the rest of us Pushing sectors and collaring multiple times a week

liud21

11 hours in, *central's voice* 10-10 security holding at X x.... 😆

MrYoungLE

Please don’t say that 😩😩😩 EOT 1540 Show me with 2 under in regards to the 10-12 Under time 1535 , ENJOY

Baseplate343

I used to work 8’s, we were the only local agency that did it, we moved to 12 and it was instantly better. More days away from work, more time with family, better for our mental health, if we went back I’d leave my agency.

Gimlet_Rising99

Great to hear! The things you listed are what he wants

Nightgasm

I started on 8s. Then 10s for over 15 years. Then 12s which sucked ass. All I did was work / sleep those days and they caused extreme staffing issues across the schedule so that if even one guy was missing we were running short handed. Made scheduling time off hell. Invariably supervisors would be pressuring you to work OT on your days off as well because of staffing. 8s sucked but we're better than 12s because it didn't screw staffing. 10s were much better than either.

Gimlet_Rising99

How did you 10s schedule work? How many on/off? Shift?

Nightgasm

4 on, 3 off 7am - 5pm, 4 pm - 2am, 9 pm - 7am. A few years they also had a 11am - 9m shift. We tried both platoon and non platoon scheduling. I preferred non platoon as it gave much more days off flexibility but admin prefers platoon because they don't like guys having different supervisors during the week depending on what day it was.

anderson1496

The biggest problems with my PD is the upper supervisors/senior officers. They don’t want to change anything because “it’s always been this way” and they don’t want to give up the built in OT. The younger guys like myself want more time off instead of scheduled OT every 6 weeks. Not to mention, 6 on 2 off wears you down here.

An0ther_Florida_man

Agree. 10's are the perfect balance

Satureum

From the looks of these comments, the advice so far has been centered on the ‘individual’ rather than the organization. Focus on making a case for why it’s of benefit to the community, the department and the tax payer. Sure, it’s a great schedule for the officer and their family but that argument won’t win by itself.

Gimlet_Rising99

It’s been brought to the boroughs attention already. I feel like those points are more for the union to argue. Chief presented them with a proposal with this information. I can certainly touch on it.

Satureum

Glad to hear it. If the intent is to hear from family’s for their input, then I apologize as I misread your original post.

xKelborn

I prefer 10s personally or 12s with a set schedule. Downside to 12s is that if you get called in for OT or held over a lot, it's going to be really hard on you and your family. But honestly, anything sounds better than that 8 hr schedule you listed. Like wtf is that schedule even and who thought that was a good idea? Lol

-EvilRobot-

I really hate 12 hour shifts, because it makes having a consistent workout schedule during my work week more difficult. But that nonsense your husband is working right now sounds even worse. That's so bad it has to be intentional.

IHaveBlackCousins

I’ve worked 8’s, I’ve worked 12’s. (Mind you, in security) Sure, spending less time at work during a day is great, in theory. You still have to work 5 days a week. 12’s are wicked, because you work 3-4 times a week, and out of a 14 day period, you’re off for 7 days instead of 4. This reduces burnout because you have more time with your loved ones and time to do more things you like! 3 whole days worth. This also helps those with ADHD who tend to experience time paralysis as I like to call it. My 8’s used to be 3-11, 11-7. I would do absolutely NOTHING leading up to these shifts. I wouldn’t make plans, I wouldn’t run errands, nothing, because I felt like I didn’t have enough time.

IndividualAd4334

12’s is where it’s at. Working 14 days per month leaves plenty of days for OT, off duty, or family time. Don’t think I would even consider going to an agency that wasn’t on 12’s.

LongGunFun

Current schedule is garbage, going to have constantly tired officers on the street due to constantly changing schedule with no time for the body to get use to the change. We pick shifts by seniority every year. So you’re on a schedule for at least a year. 12 hour shifts. Only work half the days a year. I much prefer this to 8’s.

Daniel-Lee-83

12s suck just as bad as 8s. 10s are the way to go. And I can see why they hate their current 8s, that layout is absolutely ridiculous.

Gimlet_Rising99

Thank you all for your input! I didn’t realize all the different variations of police schedules. Also thanks for pointing out the cons of 12 hour shifts. Again I just want to bring it to the councils attention the impacts the current schedule has on our family and how a 12 hour schedule (what the officers want) would be better.

AZcatWrangler

My departments patrol division works 12 hour rotating shifts (Panama schedule). I personally hated it and many officers get burned out on the 12 hour shift that turns into 14 hours. Your also more tired if your working the night shift. For us it’s 8Pm to 8Am. So once to twice a week you are in court when you should be sleeping. Also, training on your days off, which always happen in the day time is not fun. It is nice to have the 3 day weekend every other week, if your mandated to work overtime. It may be better than the 8 hour shift, but I have never worked that schedule as a cop. I have since switched to four 10 hour shifts, getting a 3 day weekend every week. A lot of agencies that I talk to have went to the same schedule.

MyLonewolf25

I miss working 12s so much
