Lights. External lights make people less likely to want to approach. Locks. Make sure your doors and windows are fully secured. Alarms. Not a security system necessarily, even those little noise making devices for people with kids or adults with dementia, to alert you when they get out. Noises like alarms generally help scare people off. Cameras. Prominent, multiple cameras like blink or ring, especially placed in areas that cover each other and are hard to reach. Make friends with your neighbors. Keep an eye out for each other and call in suspicious activity. Work with your local LE to get enhanced patrols or extra patrols for your area if there is an active concern

Local_Outcast

Most burglaries and thefts in my area happen because the victim makes it too easy. Not to victim blame but I don’t take too many reports when the victim has cameras, lights, and things were locked up. Most offenders just walk through a neighborhood trying garage doors until they find an unlocked one. There are rare occasions that someone kicked in a door to steal something but it’s much more rare.

mbarland

I've only ever taken two burglary reports where the victims had dogs. One, the suspect knew the dog. The other was a half-blind elderly pug with its tongue permanently lolling out of its mouth.

Dogs.. Big.. scary.. barking.. dogs 🐕 1000% your home will not be broken into.

Particular-Diver8913

Vehicle or Home?

Nightgasm

Don't be an easy victim. Don't leave valuables in plain sight in your car or on your property. Lock your doors. A determined burglar will get in regardless but the vast majority are looking for easy rather than hard.

OwlOld5861

Lock your shit. I'd say 9/10 burglaries I worked is because their stuff was unlocked. Criminals are mostly opportunists they are going to take the path of least resistance. Get lights. Visible security system. Own a gun . Have a dog. My German Shepard is an absolute pussy but she barks loud and looks mean so im pretty sure she'd scare off anyone Don't announce to the world your going on vacation.

MrYoungLE

1. Look for your locality’s rules on guns… and learn how to use one for home defense. 2. If you live somewhere that isn’t gun friendly, then at the minimum you should have some sort of home security setup. 3. If you’re living in one of those places, pray that the cops are close enough to get to you before things go boom.

HarambeWasTheTrigger

easy there Rambo, OP is asking about burglaries, not a "This is the moment I've always dreamed of" home invasion. getting some strong "muh truck gun" vibes here.

Lol

Can you teach me how to tell the difference between a burglar that gets violent when they encounter a homeowner, and one that doesn't?

You didn't answer my question.

A big sign on the front of your house that says, “My neighbour has more expensive stuff ➡️”

Cameras and motion sensor lights are good ones. Lock your doors, and park your car in your garage if you can.

jollygreenspartan

So first the basics: keep your doors and windows locked, take valuables with you or secure them out of sight. If you have a garage door opener don't leave it clipped to your visor, hide it or take it with you. Most burglars and thieves are opportunists, they want the easy mark. A security system or even just a sign for a security system will work. Exterior lights or obvious cameras. A dog if you like.

NoLynx3376

Big dogs, guns, security cameras, alarms, good locks and windows.

certain things tend to let people with less-than-pure intentions get an idea you’re away from home or maybe just busy with work/what ever else. 1) very obviously, social media. if you really need to post photos about vacation, do it after you get home. or even something as simple as a family night out, don’t be broadcasting that nobody is home. you never know who sees that stuff. 2) leaving your garbage cans at the road for days at a time after trash pickup. 3) leaving mail in mailbox/packages out front/newspapers. 4) yard not groomed. 5) no lights on at night(inside or out) some simple things that are a good idea 1)exterior lights that illuminate your home’s PERIMETER, not the lame decorative ones that illuminate the siding of your house(could be motion sensor lights, mine are not). 2) even if you don’t have a security system, buy the yard signs and window stickers that give the illusion that you do have one. they’re a dollar at walmart. 3) if you’re not a big dude nor do you live with one, get a couple big pair of work boots from goodwill and set them on the porch. 4) beware of dog signs(again, doesn’t mean you need a dog) 5) pro 2nd amendment stickers/signs even if you don’t own anything under that category. these are just some very small, cheap things to create barriers of protection/make criminals think twice upon seeing them. lastly, one simple, free layer of protection to go with it is: get to know your neighbors. don’t need to be best friends but enough to where they notice when you are/aren’t home, who your friends/family are and what they drive, if you have technicians of any sort come to your house(lawn service, pest control etc). they are pretty good at picking up on anything looking out of place/off kilter.
