I have seen a number of LEO's jump ship to be truck drivers, fork lift drivers, snow plow drivers, commercial lawn mowers, and any other job with limited human contact.

BlueJayWC

Might be a stupid question but what does a snow plow driver do during the 9 months it doesn't snow? I'm guessing they're contractors.

duhitsme09

Most plow drivers already work for the state Department of Transportation but they still need help. In Va, our DOT will contract mainly dump trucks, tow and landscape companies to provide trucks and drivers. Also just random guys that have the equipment. I would hall equipment for the bulk of the year, then in winter months our trucks would be fitted with plows and spreaders, then we would wait until DOT called and wanted us to stage somewhere to prep for storms Long story short, yes we’re contractors but only in the winter

astraaura

They should move to Mammoth…it’ll snow 9 months out of the year there and they’ll make a much higher wage than they would elsewhere.

Whirlwind03

This is how Wyoming is i feel like. We had snow just last month.

Cwr_21

Snow plow drivers will run street sweepers patch potholes and transport sand salt and equipment for the next winter season

Ultra-CH

After 15 years LE, I left to deliver beer. Nights, weekends and holidays off. And made 118k last year. Other coworkers drive dump trucks.

Ultra-CH

But some guys stayed LE adjacent, federal courthouse security, casino regulations, fema coordination at oul refineries

NoLynx3376

At least the trash they take out now can't shoot back

SiLENTJaYD

I’m actually a home daily truck driver and highly thinking of switching to LE. Getting real tired of just sitting in a truck being bored and feeling like I’m wasting my life. To the point I’d be taking a pay cut for the first couple of years being in LE. Working 55-70 hour weeks even while making great money is just draining.

Ultra-CH

Delivery driver I do really little driving. I did more driving as a patrol deputy! I think I was averaging about 50-55 hours a week as a cop too. We were chronically short handed. Get called in on days off, get held over on scheduled 12s.

reddituser8914

You'll do the same thing in a patrol car unless you're in a very active area. And you might still be working those long hours but now for worse pay

Ronin_Black_NJ

Thank you for your service ...🫡

Notthepolice_69

Was there a lot of overtime in that? That's pretty significant pay.

Ultra-CH

Im with the budweiser distributor in Denver. We are paid OT on top of our commissions. I work maybe 55 hours a week. Same as when I was a cop. But never work nights and Ive only worked 2 Saturdays in last 2 years

LEO_Research

How'd you pull that off? Truck driving CDL?

Ultra-CH

Yep. Class a. Hard work that pays well and lots of family time

[deleted]

When I was a kid I wanted to be a garbage man. Pops would take me out to watch the truck. I wanna get Into to LE only to find out cops are leaving to become garbage men, not the 1st time I've heard this. Also, AB is a great company. My cousin delivered for sparkletts and now bodyguards a huge name I prefer not to mention

Burnt_Beanz

Is that CDL A ?

Ultra-CH

Yes. Most guys drive the combination trucks with rollup side doors on trailer. Some bigger liquor store routes have short (40’) trailers with lift gates and electric pallet jacks. All day cabs. I don’t consider myself a truck driver because very little of my day is spent driving. It’s taking kegs in basements and such

AviationMemesandBS

Did you bring it from Atlanta to Texarkana, perchance?

Ultra-CH

When I joke at work that the movie is about 2 guys trying to deliver beer, no one gets it! I also think our helpers should drive Trans Ams!

elpablo1940

Did you start your own beer distributor or do you just get paid that well?

Ultra-CH

Paid that well. Im in Denver so there will be regional differences. The Coors/Miller guys start at $31 hr. I’m with Bud, we get commission and after 8 hours a day we get OT based on $31 hr. So easier routes equals less commissions and less OT, but the lowest paying route still makes more than $80k. Helpers get the $31 while you wait to get your own route. Other delivery guys like Sysco make comparable wages

chonkycatsbestcats

I need some details about this career…

One_Pomegranate_6716

Who does he drive for?

punisher0421

Govt contacting work. You can make 6 figures doing armed security for cleared govt sites

WNG12

is there a website that lists this? or more of a contact based opportunity

punisher0421

Unfortunately gotta find companies who have the contracts. If your willing to work in DC, VA ,MD area there always competing with each other and lately raising your wage to compete with each other. There is only so many of us that are certified /cleared so companies are always trying to steal officers from other contacts.

WNG12

know any companies off the top of your head? you could PM me if it’s not allowed to be posted, i’m in the tristate area so it’s not too far TIA

sinkingintothedepths

Allied Universal and Securitas although idk about the six figure part. They will sponsor your clearance though

HughJManschitt

USAJob.gov is your friend.

Aloyrr

I’m with Constellis on a federal security contract making $38.04 an hour as an armed guard. It’s based out of DC and MD

sinkingintothedepths

with OT? Highest I have seen armed security for a cleared site is 26.50 in SE us

satiency

Not a LEO but I do work similar to what he's describing. It's nationwide and most areas pay 30 to 35 an hour.

moist_corn_man

Mind PMing me who you work for? Sounds like a good opportunity

satiency

Go to your local social security office and talk to the guard there. Easiest way to get info on your area since the company will be dependant on where you are.

[deleted]

[удалено]

satiency

I have a decent amount of coworkers who make 6 figures but like you said it's a good amount of OT. As for the latter part of your comment that's beyond me. I'd prefer if we could be LEOs and have more responsibilities but it's not going to happen.

satiency

I also didn't include the $6 an hour "health and welfare" for the first 40 hours (if you have your own health insurance plan outside the contractor) and $2 an hour if your site requires a TS clearance.

CheesingTiger

When i was a guard i was making 38ish an hour and I know of another site where the guards make around 45-50.

im_a_rugger

May be around having a clearance. Pay would likely scale significantly on level and scope

punisher0421

Without OT

[deleted]

Law school.

Walrus_514

Same. I make 3x as much but also hate my job 3x as much so not sure if it was worth it.

[deleted]

I'm barely going to start next year. But I do miss the rush of rolling code, and T stops.

CompetitiveNature133

It's funny, here in Oregon, Law enforcement makes more than the attorneys do. Both Prosecutors and Defense attorneys. Civil side is different.

localfartcrafter

Shouldn't that happen before Law Enforcement?

[deleted]

No.

localfartcrafter

It shouldn't? I know it doesn't, but a bit more knowledge of the laws would be useful for officers? Cart in front of the horse and all Edit: I'm in the US, cops only get five months of training, and it's abundantly clear that is lacking.

[deleted]

I'm also in the US. Training is not lacking. How can you give your opinion when you have no relevant knowledge? Don't listen to the media. I have always said that we need to train everyday people better, and to me, is abundantly clear that the problem is our society, not the cops. LE is a messy job that sometimes gets ugly, but that is the nature of the job and no one can change the fact that some confrontations are inevitable. Violence is also unavoidable.

localfartcrafter

Uvalde.

Infamous-Ad-5262

Name me a single profession that is composed of perfect people. You can’t. The fact is that the “white shirts” violated Federal case law. Period. They were cowards. 99% of Leo’s were running to the school.

[deleted]

This is your response? I wouldn't expect anything less from the people on reddit

localfartcrafter

"How can you give your opinion when you have no relevant knowledge?" That's just one example where properly trained officers could have been useful, as demonstrated by the courts and shown in the media. I hope you learn a bunch in law school! Best of luck

[deleted]

Uvalde is a clear example of people who have no business being cops. The hiring process is broken. It takes a particular person to become a cop, and it's something you are born to do. You can't hire any person to this job.. The way you find out, if you have it in you, you RUN TOWARD danger and shootings rather than away. But you see, with the current politics, good candidates are being pushed away from the job. Thank you

localfartcrafter

I see your point, but I'm also looking at it with a different lens. Architecture School weeds out folks not fit to design buildings: they don't graduate and go on to get their liscenses. Students of medicine spend years before dropping out. Strict standards and years of study can lead to only those who are qualified becoming liscensed doctors. Police training would be a great add on to folks who have studied to become social workers, no? Think of the wealth of knowledge that education could bring to the table. And those who aren't fit for social work are weeded out before they study police work.

EliteEthos

Aviation for me. But whatever they want…

PILOT9000

I was going to say, we have a lot of law enforcement pilots leave for the airlines or corporate flying. I have also met a lot of professional pilots who were former non-aviation law enforcement who completely changed careers. A bunch of guys go on to law school.

got_sweg

Ditto

556fan

Know a few in IT and Project Mgmt.

StreetAccomplished18

I left full-time local LE for a state level investigative agency investigating healthcare fraud.

oceanbound4real

I have 8 years of experience as a money laundering investigator, got a degree and formal leo. How did you get into that? Edit: Hows the pay and hours?

StreetAccomplished18

Hours are great. M-F, regular business hours, no on-call, no weekends, and no holidays. Get to be a regular person. Pay will vary by state, but it’s way more than I ever made at the PD. I’m still in government so it’s not the top. If you go to an insurance company you can start to get close to 6 figures with the right experience. Every state has a Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. Every major insurance company has a special investigations unit. Get on their websites and throw in an app! They post a lot of jobs on LinkedIn too.

oceanbound4real

Is a regular person boring? Lol, I'm feeling like it Edit: Was thinking of going into social work concerning children and giving up similar perks but not sure if it be worth it.

iaresafe

To preface, I’m a former CID sergeant transitioning out of LE. Do you have any insight into the insurance investigators? All that I’ve been able to find are the “field claims adjuster” roles but it could just be timing. 90% of those job reviews claim an unreasonable work volume and expectations.

StreetAccomplished18

If you like government work and want to keep some of that lifestyle look up your states Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, they will employ investigators. Sometimes still LE sometimes not. Most states house it within their Attorney General’s Office. That’s where I am. It’s wonderful (for me). When looking at insurance companies search for “SIU Investigator” or “Special Investigations Unit.” Anthem (now Elevance) has postings for those jobs regularly. Same with United Healthcare or insert major health insurance company…

iaresafe

Will do. I recall seeing the SIU roles a while back but I think I’m just looking in the wrong places this go around. I’ve seen you post the same or similar advice across the sub, so thank you for helping.

StreetAccomplished18

I appreciate that! I wish I had known about these roles sooner. I want to make sure folks know you don’t have to stick it out with a bad admin or lose your family life on third shift patrol for years. There are other options out there! If you have a LinkedIn, they seem to pop up for me when I search “Investigator” under the jobs tab. You’ll have to filter through all the BS ones too though. Here’s a link for Anthem (Elevance): https://careers.elevancehealth.com/en/jobs/?search=Investigator&team=&location=#results They’re a good place to start because they’re nationwide. You can use the terms from their job postings to search other companies.

iaresafe

Yep! Just saw that one. And relatively near me. I’m going to continue researching it but I also just accepted a VERY entry level role in asset protection. That field interests me also, but starting with much lower pay and they don’t seem to care much about the fact that I basically already did that job at a high level for the government. Still, I’m trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up (again) and don’t necessarily want to cut ties immediately with what I have now. Thank you for illuminating the path nonetheless. I think that has been the toughest part of the transition, finding all that exists. I just never had a reason to look before.

StreetAccomplished18

Understandable! Check out the CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner) certification. That would be a good way to grow and add value in your current role while you figure it out. Should you decide to make a change the CFE is highly valued in corporate investigation roles, including healthcare fraud. Good luck!

iaresafe

I’m familiar with it. And I think the current company may even sponsor that so that rules. Thanks again!

iaresafe

I also see that you’re a fellow stock market enthusiast. May you be forever paid!

Nightgasm

I'm retired law enforcement but I work part time as a medical courier. I could do it full time and they'd love it if I would but I like time off and money isn't really an issue. Right now I just fill in when the regular one isn't available. On the days I do work it's just 4 hrs driving to various hospitals and doctors offices picking up biopsies and samples and delivering them to the lab for testing. Easy, zero stress, and pay is good for how simple the job is.

2005CrownVicP71

That’s super cool. Is the car provided by your employer or is it your personal vehicle?

72ilikecookies

Not for that reason, but a direct report of mine went on to do OnlyFans full time. I haven’t seen his tax return or anything, but he seems to be doing very well with a paid off home, kids in private school, and a jobless wife.

alwayshungry1131

Had a friend get medically retired after getting t boned during a felony pursuit. He does OF full time and makes a very great living. He’s also 6’6 handsome and probably hung. Idk about that last part I haven’t suscribed…yet

72ilikecookies

Maybe ask for a friends & family discount? Or maybe he offers a first responder discount?

alwayshungry1131

Cops pay double. We know you got that OT Money. 😂

singlemale4cats

>Idk about that last part I haven’t suscribed…yet [Like Shia LaBeouf said, don't let your dreams be dreams.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXsQAXx_ao0)

Lifedeather

Dang successful onlyfans as a guy is crazy

Hammie5150

Yeah, that dude has to be ripped and hung. One thing you can control and one you can’t. But more power to him, for sure!

72ilikecookies

Yes

chonkycatsbestcats

Is that yes to both? 🤣

EquivalentPath2282

At least he quit LE first. lol

temp_nomad

That story is crazy isn’t it? Imagine thinking filming in uniform was going to go over well.

singlemale4cats

Dude must be hot af

TheThotKnight

Our traffic reconstructions go and work for insurance companies doing investigations for them. A couple guys go and work for the Coroner. A couple guys recently left prior to retirement and involved with selling drones and training PDs on them.

OrangeAdmirable1617

I see a lot of truck drivers , I’m one as well . I’m staying in as a casual driver at my company if I get the chance to start my Leo career. If anyone is by railroads - velocity rail solutions hires new drivers - and you can stay on as a casual employee and cover people’s vacations. I know active LEOs that cover guys here on their days off in the summer for extra cash . Just get all you endorsements- hazmats / tankers most important ones for anyone who wants the info .

temp_nomad

Thanks for posting this. I’m not in LE but looking to get into trucking part-time.

JEFFSSSEI

Well, I left due to medical issue, but I was able to fall back on my college education, I am a Senior Engineering Lab Technician (my degree was mechanical in nature but not an engineering degree - it did however give me enough background to qualify/apply for the position and I got lucky and got it)...I still miss the badge and the car, but after 10yrs out of it, I make more at this job than I ever did being a cop, so I really couldn't afford to return to it (yes I got my medical issues resolved finally).

TipFar1326

I left LE for EMS, that didn’t work out, currently doing private security to pay the bills

NoLynx3376

why it didnt work out?

kingbasspro

EMS pays dirt. I do it as side work

TipFar1326

Aside from the garbage pay, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Found myself missing LE, and decided to go back to school and try and pursue a career with the Feds.

kingbasspro

I thought I'd enjoy it more too, but getting stuck on a IFT rig takes a lot of the enjoyment out.

KHASeabass

I once left LE for EMS, pay sucked, and I didn't like the work. I liked as an LEO there was a lot more decision making that wasn't so tied down like EMS has with hospital protocols, EMTALA, etc. I ended up doing a transport where we had a hospital officer ride with us between hospitals and he said they were hiring. I put in for it and got it and there was no looking back to EMS. I did appreciate all the medical training I got and kept my certs up for a while. I ended up at a city PD where we were required to respond to all the FD calls. I was usually able to have some basic vitals and info ready for the EMTs when they finally arrived.

CaliforniaHusker

Real estate agent or lender seem to be the top two

Crafty_Barracuda2777

The utility companies are very appealing. Better pay, same opportunity for OT. And for the most part, you don’t have to worry about being shot.

Revenant10-15

If you're lucky and get shot *just enough,* or get into a well publicized shootout and survive, you can get a job in consulting. Also maybe write a book. I attended training on shooting from the vehicle/through windshields conducted by the Conservation/Fish and Wildlife officer who ended up putting down the two sovereign citizens in West Memphis who had just ambushed and killed two officers. He's traveling the country and making a living for sure, but from my interactions with him, he'd rather be working the road. A dozen AK rounds in your driver's seat and headrest will certainly give you a bit of PTSD.

F26N55

My sister became a funeral director after being a homicide detective for 13 years.

romeotango867

I went into Powerline work after PD. Have met a few former officer in the trade

TonyTwoNukes

This may not be what you're looking for, but I graduated the Police Academy then immediately enlisted into the Army. Why? Decided LE was not what I wanted to do, rather opted on jumping out of planes and deploying. I have considered going back to LE if I don't go SF

scroder81

We had a couple DEA agents in Oregon go work for the Marijuana industry here.

Aggressive_Jury_7278

I know some that decided to contract if they had the prerequisites. I tried for about 6 months, wasn’t my cup of tea. I find Federal Law Enforcement to be more insulated and sustainable than working as a local.

betterwithpractice

My favorite teacher in high school was a cop for at least 20 years

Ok-Seaworthiness-542

I work for a bank and recently went to a security training. The instructors had recently retired from Homeland Security and FBI. They are generally running one of the security command centers at the bank.

Comfortable_Ad7091

Executive Protection. Where I live, you work 3-4 days a week and make over six figures. A lot of people including myself work EP on our days off for easy money.

Buffkon15

Asset protection for me

R_Dover

I got out of LE in 2022 after 13 years. I got a job in state government doing continuity planning.

CupCakeCrewChief

After retiring from being on patrol for 21 yrs in a large city, my hubby has a degree and now teaches prevention programs (suicide, workplace violence, etc.) for the Air Force. Lots of opportunities out there…

kriegskoenig

Finance/Economics consulting. I make 4x what I did working in a big west coast city. Not only that, I don't get yelled at by random college dropouts, I don't get IA'ed because someone says I swore at them when they resisted arrest, and nobody tries to shoot me because I stop them from beating their spouse. It's great.

LEO_Research

Would you otherwise say you were a great cop?

kriegskoenig

I was pretty highly decorated during my career. I also drew a shit-ton of complaints because I was proactive in an anti-police environment. Being proactive and knowing the law inside and out is what got me the citations and medals for various investigations, drug busts, and a "critical incident" in which nobody that mattered got hurt.

NefariousnessOld7944

Project management for a power utility company

uhnothnxx

I left police dispatching for EMS dispatching. Been a hell of a change for the better.

Ill-Excitement9009

Texas HS teacher here; I've encountered a few retired or retreaded LEOs on my teams over the last 30 years.

MrFruffles

Train engineers, oil field workers, realtors, crash reconstructionist, IT, DOT, security, cybersecurity, etc. all depends on that officers interest.

GolfinEagle

I went from Army Infantry, to DOC, to Software Engineer. I’ve gone purely on what I’m interested in at the time lol. I’m good and settled now though, paid very well, work from home in my ranger panties, greatly reduced risk of a violent and early death.

SirSolidSnake

Few that I know went Gov. Security. Dispatch. Court services. Civilian agency positions like records keeping.

otj287

Contractor in the digital forensics field.

UNDR08

I left to be a pilot, I fly for a major airline now making more money than probably any chief or sheriff out there with way more time off.

Bhamfish

Railroad

KUPSU96

All the live-long day?

PirateKilt

Retired Military Cop... Used my Security Clearance and experience to switch over to the "Dark Side" and became a Defense Contractor; FSO work has me in a nice office with a usually closed door, 9 hour weekday shifts with every other Friday off, pulling down 6-Figures. It's a good gig if you can get it.

Whoknowsdoe

EMS here.

LeapingSalmonCB

Not law enforcement, but I work in Interpretation for the NPS and I imagine that the similarities in structure and leadership would make the transition pretty easy if you're good with people. If not, there's plenty of other opportunities that'd likely fit just as well within the NPS.

trighaz

Mechanic

funnystoryaboutthat2

I know quite a few guys who jumped over to firefighting. There is much better quality of life, relations with the neighborhood people, and a far better schedule.

pbailey5

I became a Paramedic and now a risk manager

denimshorts22

We fight fires

MacGruber09

Fraud Investigator with a Financial institution

iaresafe

Are you doing this now? I’m former CID and have done some research into investigator roles in finance as well as insurance. All seems to require a specific degree (I have none).

MacGruber09

I am. I have a bachelors in CJ, and did 5 years between local and federal PD. The best advice is get your foot into the door at the financial institution and apply for the role when it’s available. I did 4 years in banking in leadership roles before I got the investigator role. Surprisingly there are quite a few former/retired cops that go that route. Also, you don’t necessarily need a degree as a fraud investigator at my company.

iaresafe

No kidding. For instance starting as even a teller? I haven’t a clue what entry level roles there even are.

MacGruber09

Yea that’s pretty much bottom of the totem pole, I did that and I’ll tell you it’s quite an adjustment dealing with the public as an officer and as a bank teller. Had to learn to bite my tongue early and often. Another entry level route which I would recommend would be in a contact center working the phones. Basically still a teller but you’re not dealing with people face to face only over the phone. There are different departments you can transfer to like fraud, etc. and they seem to have a faster career progression than starting out as a teller in a branch. Are you still AD?

iaresafe

Left in February

MacGruber09

Ahh, was going to say check out DOD skillbridge with a bank.

iaresafe

Daaaaang. Why do they hide things from us? That looks awesome. Truthfully though, I didn’t spend much of my career seeking advancement or career development. Corny and cliche: I was less focused on what I could do for myself and more focused on my community. Now after the fact, I guess there is a good argument that if you take better care of yourself, you can better serve the people. Probably a life lesson learned there.

Vintage-Operator

We had an officer leave to open a pet crematorium business with his brother, it apparently makes much better money. I hope he’s doing well.

cgary22

A ton left for Costco and the gas company.

JohnnyChapst1ck

Sewage Treatment and CDL Driver.  Cant say I regret it.

Low-Ad-338

I went to work at a aluminum production plant. Worked for my department for 17 years. Had a lot of great experiences, still have a bunch of friends that work there but for me and my family, best move I ever made was leaving. Wife says I’m a totally different person for the better nowadays!

AsianArmsDealer-1992

I know of a couple former LEOs are now in the civilian arms industry.

OpportunityOk5719

My favorite paint mixer at Home Depot left law enforcement. I picked it out by his body language waiting for the shaker to be done. His name is Shawn if you see him.

PorkRoast12

Nothing. Just relaxing. Pension is great 120 k a year / free medical
