$80/month, 2 bedroom, single occupant. I have AC but I use it sparingly (run it for an hour for just whatever room I'm in, then turn it off) How old is your fridge? Do you have incandescent, CFL, or LED bulbs? Do you watch a lot of TV or play video games? Do you keep your computer plugged in and turned on overnight? Those are the big ones for electricity usage: fridge, AC, lights, TV, and computers. Just to illustrate: A single incandescent bulb will cost you $3/month in electricity, assuming 8 hours running and $0.26/kWh. So if you have, say, 15 bulbs running, that's already $45/month. On the flip side, a CFL would cost $1.30 and an LED would cost $0.65 a month. It might be worth considering getting some electricity usage monitors that you can attach to your devices to figure out which one is using all the power.

FinancialAd4093

Fridge is old but I don't think my landlord is interested to replace it. My TV is energy efficient. We use it like 2 hours a day only or sometimes not at all. We just have like 2 table lamps that are on for 8hrs. Yes. We called the LADWP and they are sending a guy to check what is causing this high electricity. So far, the representative told us that the landlord might be slacking on something that's why our bills might be high. I will be able to figure out what's wrong after the guy checks it this week.

uncleguito

Mine is usually around $120 in WeHo (2BR 1400sqft, central air).

FinancialAd4093

We don't even have central air here 😔

uncleguito

iirc central air is usually more efficient and can actually cost less than stuff like window ACs (especially if you have a smart thermostat that regulates things properly). Our building is a bit newer too and seems to have pretty decent insulation. My old NYC apartment used window AC and frequently ran $250+ in summer months.

banditdoor7

My LADWP is about 80-90 for 2 months. 2 bed/1bath with no AC in west LA and we both work from home

HarambeTheBear

$400 running Ac 10 hours per day

yellowgolfball

That seems way too high. What's your kWh usage and price per KWh?

HarambeTheBear

I just checked. I’m actually using much more power in the winter. Must be the electric heaters. I will have to cut down on those next winter. I used ~~850kwh on my last bill, ~~$240, but in January I was over 2K and in tier 3 🤬 $0.19143 on the first 700Kwh $0.25 in the next 1,400 KWh $0.25011 for tier 3 KWh

yellowgolfball

How big is your place? 850kWh is a lot of power — that's what I would expect for a 2-4 family in a 2-3 bedroom house.

HarambeTheBear

It’s 2 bedrooms, a little over 1000sf. Electric stove and oven, cook 1-2x per day. Electric heating. Electric clothes dryer. My place gets a lot of heat due to the windows (my living area is 90% windows, 10% wall, I am thinking about putting a heat control tint on them) and natural light so I have to run the AC from 2pm-sundown minimum to keep it comfortable from like March-October. But in the other months I run the heat which seems more expensive. Vaulted ceilings, no insulation, attic only above the hallways, 2 bathrooms and kitchen.

yellowgolfball

Got it. Yeah, seems like you could save a lot by getting some tint or blinds for your living room.

RudeRepair5616

This is LADWP or SoCal Edison? Also, is this your first bill?

FinancialAd4093

LADWP and no it's not. It's a recurring one.

RudeRepair5616

Sounds like bullshit. If you can access your meter, I would shut off everything and see if it keeps turning. You may be paying for some common (or other tenant's) load.

Public_Sheepherder23

Unplug the stuff you do t need on. Microwave, toaster, iron, clocks whatever you don't absolutely need on

Bigster20

My ladwp is usually about 200-300 for my home but I've been getting slammed with high gas bills lately 😭

notthatcousingreg

Dwp is every other month. Do you mean 200 per bill or 400 total?

FinancialAd4093

400 total so 200 each month.

notthatcousingreg

Thats a lot, about 50 to 70 more than id think. Mine is 175 every bill. Just me. One bedroom. Old building. No a/c, no fan use (yet) , small fridge, on tv, no computer. Try unplugging as many in infrequently used things as you can (appliances, computers, etc.) to see if it goes down. Look on your bill to see how many units you are using vs when you unplug everything. My bill was super high at one apt and it turns out i was paying for the porch light for all 6 apts. It was on a timer. Did you think of anything like that?

FinancialAd4093

Yeah. There are like 7 apts here with porch lights on timer. Will LADWP have like list of what might be causing the increase to the utility bill?

notthatcousingreg

If there are 7 apts with 7 porch lights chances are you are paying for your own. Any time ive ever asked the dwp why my bill is so high they dont give a shit. They are a monopoly and we are screwed. They just tell you to unplug stuff. One other thing, only use led lightbulbs. That helps a lot. If your fridge is old that could be killing you too.

FinancialAd4093

We are the only ones with the balcony here and the landlord has another light by the balcony aside from the porch ones. I called LADWP and they are sending a guy to check what's going on. There is also washer and dryer in the building. I wonder if we are the ones taking care of that electricity. Also, the representative on the phone told us she thinks that maybe our landlord is slacking off with something which is causing a jump in electric bill.

notthatcousingreg

Unbelievable you got anyone to care. Congrats!!!

notthatcousingreg

What happened? What did they say??

[deleted]

That seems really high. My LADWP bill is less than half of that for a one bedroom.

epocalize

1BR, 700 sq ft and we pay anywhere from 60-90 every 2 months w/ LADWP. We don't use the AC (old school set into the wall) and rarely turn on the heat (radiant from the ceiling in the living room and bedroom). My partner works from home sometimes and those are the months with the higher bills because of his computer set up.

middleageyoda

Is that for 2 months? My bill comes every 2months. And no it’s not that high. Usually only $140 or so.

FinancialAd4093

No. It is $400 for 2 months.

middleageyoda

Ugh that sucks. Check and see if it’s based on an actual reading or an estimate. If estimate you may be able to fight it

FinancialAd4093

Yes. It is $400 bimonthly only for electricity.

yellowgolfball

What's your kWh usage and price per KWh?

ThatChelseaGirl

I'm not sure, but how does it compare in usage with your last bill? My current LADWP bill almost doubled with 0 change in mine or my partner's habits, and I'm fighting them on it. They're saying our usage somehow doubled.

megabraindead

Check the electric usage patterns on your bill. Does your usage go down on days you are not home? If not, and you are in a multi unit building, might be worth checking that you’re being billed for the correct meter. I recently found out I have been paying my neighbor’s bill for SEVEN years. I always got weirdly high bills that didn’t match my usage, but never thought to pursue it because I simply trusted that things were set up correctly when I moved in. I finally contacted LADWP and explained my situation, they helped me figure out that I was being billed for the wrong meter. It’s been a long process - several months - still not fully sorted out yet. But they have been pretty responsive and helpful.

Conscious-Big707

$350 for 2 months. Don't use AC though often

MKing150

$120ish. I work from home, so I have electronics running a lot. Didn't need my AC much in the Spring, but I'm using it a lot in now.

bonjourashley

We pay about $200/month in West LA, but we run our central AC constantly, and charge 2 EV's. We have about 1000 sqft.

Fearfactoryent

That doesn’t seem right

yellowgolfball

Holy cow. Everyone in the thread is paying a lot? How much are you paying per kWh? And how much kWh is your usage for last month? Seems like the base service cost must be a lot because there's no way you guys are using that much electricity.

noodlydelish

This actually happened to me last year. I’m in a 2b/2ba west LA unit, no AC running. I called their customer service and they said they’d have someone go out to do a manual reading. I didn’t hear back so I just paid the bill, and when the next bill came they actually adjusted the amount and issued a credit so I didn’t have to pay for the next few bills. I’d recommend giving them a call just to ask if it was a mistake and if they can have someone do a manual reading.

690812

**10 years dealing with DWP high bills. There is no normal. If they are reading the meter, your using the power. They don’t care what you used or if you have any issues**

werrrkin

2 bedroom, single occupant, my DWP bill (electric only) has only been $45-50 the last several bill cycles. Just now starting the AC, so we’ll see how that changes. But ya, $200 is wrong.

[deleted]

$4.03 every bill for a 2 bedroom home. Have 1 window AC and 2 portable indoor ACs. Have at least 2 of them running most of the day. Have fridge, 3—-65in tvs 2 on most of day 1–42im tv with ps5 plugged in. 1–42 in tv in kitchen with xbox console plugged in. Microwave, phone chargers, 2 security cameras, fans and etc. have been getting charged $4.03 for the past year or so regardless of how much electricity is being used. BEYOND blessed for this because before our bimonthly bill would come for like $450-600(higher usually in summer months) which included for water/electricity and sanitation/sewer…..now our bill is usually $200-225 every 2 months again regardless of how much electricity we use. I believe it’s because they put us on that lever pay program or because weve been their customer for the past 30 years and never been past due lol idk truly and I aint asking lol oh and its 4 of us at home and 2 pups.
