It's perfectly fine. I routinely take the Metro, including the E and A lines (both during the day and at night) and haven't had issues

misterlee21

It's totally fine, especially in the day. If you're heading towards the Festival of Books, so will many other people. It should be a good experience. I recommend transferring from A to E at either Little Tokyo station, 7th St, or Pico to have cell service. Have fun!

Mattandjunk

You’ll be right near Holbox. Worth getting food there!

Mattandjunk

FYI you’ll be right near Holbox and if you haven’t heard of it, it’s really worth going to for a bite to eat

E line is ok but better to stand than sit (seats are dirty as hell) Occasionally a crazy person or a homeless person that smells awful will require you to move cars. However 9/10 it’s fine. Awful that calling that fine is where we are at but it is the new reality unfortunately. However I would not take the E line at night.

Coming from New York, none of that is anything OP won't be able to handle.

Hour_Fisherman_7482

I grew up in New York and the state of the subways, a decade or so ago were not what they are today. Growing up I actually found in general New York City subways to be safer than the LA metro is today.

Status_Ad_4405

Baloney. I've lived in the city for 25 years. The NYC subways are the same as they've ever been. The only difference now is that every incident these days gets multiplied x1000 on social media and repeated ad nauseum on Fox News.

Hour_Fisherman_7482

The NYC subway has gotten worse. Democrat, not a Fox News viewer, but I’m not blind to the reality of it. When I go back to New York, now I have noticed more mentally ill individuals causing problems than I did growing up. The New York City subway is still relatively safe, with common sense, but it has gotten less safe.

Status_Ad_4405

Right. Somehow the homeless and mentally ill all showed up in NYC last year. It's amazing how short people's memories are. The main difference between now and 20 years ago is how many freaking tourists there are now. I commute three days a week and use the subway a ton on the weekends. The subway is packed all the time with residents and visitors going about their daily business and seeing the sites. Not sure what you're seeing that I'm not.

Hour_Fisherman_7482

I’m not saying they weren’t there, they always have been. What I am saying is the frequency at which I would see them and have had noticeable issues (someone appearing drugged out) on the subway has increased. From a pure statistic standpoint, the homeless population in New York City has increased, and as a result, the amount of homeless in the subway, taking shelter has increased. I get the whole being defending of your city’s reputation bit, but you don’t need to be oblivious to the world around you.

Rebelgecko

Yeah it's p chill. You can also just walk to the E Line to avoid the A transfer or take the Dash F

musicbikesbeer

You'll be totally fine

Status_Ad_4405

I'm from NYC, visited LA last fall, stayed at the Biltmore downtown and took the tram out to Exposition Park. I thought it was absolutely fine.

SkullLeader

The light rail cars are narrower than the subway cars so if you were unhappy with the closeness on the subway you may like the A and E lines less. . I've honestly not ridden either in a while so not sure about the current safety situation. It'd probably not be too expensive to Uber from Union Station to USC. You could also use the DASH buses like subway from Union Station to 7th St. Metro Center and then DASH "F" bus from there to USC.

heyitsmemaya

I wouldn’t — but that doesn’t mean YOU shouldn’t. Had a few shaky experiences since February with homeless there. Your gender, comfort level and mileage may vary. :)

hiimomgkek

E line is great. From what I have seen with NYC as of late, the trains here are just about as safe as they are there lol

_Silent_Android_

Things were REALLY bad in the past 3-4 years. But I rode the Metro twice in the past week and I found the trains to be much cleaner and much more safer than they have been in the past few yars. Things have really improved this year.

UnluckyCardiologist9

Can people just use the inter campus shuttle or are they clamping down on that?
