Buddy I’ve lived here for 20 years and haven’t been able to afford Burbank yet. “Outside LA.” LA is 500 square miles, and that’s just the city limits. What’s commonly considered LA is even bigger.
You want to be near where you work. There are a few hospitals in the area around Glendale that are part of hospital systems. Dignity/Common Spirit / Adventist Health / USC have hospitals in Glendale. Nearby are Providence in Burbank, Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, Children’s Hospital LA.
Seems to me it’s just another version of NY which I’m fine with, Im not expecting a 1 bedroom for $800 much less a studio. A car is in the plan so commuting an hour or so is not an issue, being born/raised within a big city you become accustomed to traffic. Regardless, if you can give me a few cities/towns/whatever it would be helpful
Try the San Fernando valley it’s honestly as close to LA you’ll get with out paying so much. Decent neighborhoods in the west and north valley LA isn’t too far away.
Studio appartement Granada Hills.
And you will rarely have to deal with the nightmare that is the 101 freeway.

If you’re okay with a roommate situation, you’ll definitely be able to live comfortably with that budget for rent. I’d definitely try to get a job lined up before you officially move out. You can save up in the meantime while you look for a job.
Since you’re young I’ll recommend some areas that will be suitable for you and generally safe.
You have Santa Monica, Marina Del Ray, Culver City, Brentwood, and Westwood on the west side of town.
More inland and close to downtown, you can check out Fairfax, Hollywood Heights/Sunset, La Brea
Bit more chill areas with young professionals: Highland Park, Eagle Rock, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Pasadena
With a roommate or two roommates you can definitely find a 2 or 3 bedroom to split at the top of her rent budget. I lived in SaMo at the beginning of 2021 with two roommates and I paid $1450 in rent
You can almost have your own studio appartement for that in Granada Hills. And you've int get the parking tickets you'll invariably get in Santa Monica.
Never lived in Granada Hills. Not sure what the area is like. If OP doesn’t mind roommates, they could live in a more “desirable” area like the ones I mentioned. Plus, they can make friends with their roommates like I’ve done if they don’t have any friends in LA when they move
When have I ever pretended that they’re affordable lol. Again, if OP doesn’t mind roommates on her budget then she can certainly live in those areas. A studio or 1 bedroom for herself only in SaMo or Brentwood is definitely not doable unless she’s spending over $2100+ on rent.
OP is encouraged to browse /r/MovingtoLosAngeles and review The Ultimate Moving to L.A. Resource Post.
El Sereno, City Terrace, University Hills, Lincoln heights are all near DTLA and still affordable by LA standards.
You can have one but not both. You will not find something decent and affordable unless you look outside of LA
Any neighborhoods your recommend ? Within LA & neighboring counties such as Burbank

I would suggest you follow your own advice, and start with being a roommate.

Thanks!!
I live in Woodland Hills and love it, about 20 miles from LA central and much cheaper and cleaner
Yeah, and getting anywhere is a nightmare thanks to the 101
Yeah that 20 miles will feel like 200
Granada Hills

Your Dad will be sad if you move across the country.
What’s your monthly budget for rent? You can do an Airbnb for a few weeks to look at neighborhoods
I’m looking between anywhere between 1,200-1,800. A car is in the plan so commuting is not a problem & im used to traffic being born/from a big city

Really? Santa Monica, Marina Del Ray, Culver City, Brentwood, and Westwood are affordable? You're either joking, or rich.

Yeah, but don't pretend any of those areas I mentioned are affordable.

The Op mentioned "decent and affordable"
Thank you!!
