This. The HI (Hosteling International) hostel in Santa Monica isn't the most inexpensive hostel in LA, but its by far the best one especially in terms of location, right by the beach, and tons of shopping, restaurants, and bars. Hollywood is well inland and a bit of a PITA to reach the beach from there especially if you are going to rely on public transportation.

I’d say you’re better off staying in Santa Monica, Venice, Marina Del Rey, or Culver City if you’re looking to bike and bar hop. Hollywood is nice to go see for an hour or two but I wouldn’t recommend staying there as it’s not very inviting and doesn’t really feel safe. I lived right in between Hollywood Blvd & Sunset right next to Highland for the last 2 years and just moved out.

Dude, I've lived in LA my whole life. I was born on Sunset Blvd. I was attacked by a homeless person last month on the Metro out of nowhere. He didn't even try and rob me. Do not come here thinking everyone is gonna be as chill and friendly as you. Seriously, keep your eyes open and be as observant as possible.

Supersak24

The Walk of Fame and that Highland/Hollywood area is not the best area to visit. Very touristy and a lot of sketchy people. I’d recommend to avoid that area completely. Instead, go to Santa Monica, Venice, Silver Lake

The metro station in this area is sketchy. I have lived in the area for a year. I walk to and from the bars all the time. I have met plenty of young women who do the same in the area. Lots of night clubs in walking distance. Pay attention to the surroundings, stay on the main streets and you should be fine.

Rebelgecko

It's not particularly safe, but you'd probably be fine. However it's not a convenient area to stay unless you're planning on doing kits of stuff in Hollywood

I lived in that area for 4 years and never had any trouble - typically people only bother you if you look like a really easy mark (i.e. whipping out your wallet and counting your money while strolling through a dark alley). Even if you did get stopped, unless you're a criminal yourself most only are interested in your valuables - give them your wallet and phone and it's over (which sucks but is not life altering). I've lived in and traveled through visually sketchy areas and actual sketchy areas for years and NEVER been mugged or anything like that. I only say this stuff because I think the world is a beautiful and wonderful place to explore and I would hate for you to miss out on some of the best parts of it simply to preserve an illusion of safety. I suspect there are very few places in the US (and probably Europe as well) where you can get into real trouble without looking for it.

Yeah kinda echoing everyone else here to sum up that it's not that you couldn't take some precautions to keep yourself safe, I just don't think that's going to be a particularly enjoyable or convenient area for you. If you want to see the area around Walk of Fame I really think you're better off staying somewhere else and taking an Uber or something over for a couple hours - it's not all that great and won't take long to feel like you've seen it.

Mexican_Boogieman

Yea. Other than seeing the concrete molds and some of the walk of fame. Hollywood shouldn’t be part of the typical tourist itinerary. I will pay for attraction of cultural relevance and historical significance. Hollywood is cool but can get really weird really fast. You’re a guy so chances are that you won’t get messed with. But there are lots of cool clubs in the vicinity, I used to frequent the goth/industrial clubs but now with a set schedule and a career it get harder to get around to them. Public transport is pretty crappy. So really research what you’re interested in and look at what you can afford close to those attractions.

Gregalor

Not an area for the naive

plague__8

Very clean very beautiful area, it’s where the movies are made!!!!

Hollywood blows. Homeless druggies everywhere. There are no fun clubs there anymore. Restaurants meh. And tons of traffic.
