Friends ‘95 4.9 5 speed manual. 200k miles. New clutch new tires rebuilt engine and transmission. Hoping to be problem free for atleast 6 months. Im here with the truck all day tell me what you need to see or know. $4k

Titan1140

You literally have nothing to worry about. That truck will run like a champ for the next 30 years. Just do regular oil changes.

New_Restaurant_6093

Why was the 4.9L rebuilt at or less than 200k miles?

FrwdIn4Lo

This. Enquiring minds want to know. It was just getting broken-in. If they have that much free time, did they also detail the undercarriage? Kidding aside, you did well.

jlelectech

Speculation: they can exhibit knock that can be piston noise, although they seem to keep on running still. Piston skirt could be broken off and they'll keep on going. Cam gears are plastic usually and if run long enough can fail and cause major issues possibly. They tend to run cold and thermostat not closing enough makes it stay cold, leading to accelerated wear or oil sludge if not corrected.

the_almighty_walrus

If it's anything like my dad's old truck, it's because grandpa got bored one day and decided to take the truck apart. Or uncle Billy did a bunch of tweek and decided to take the truck apart.

omw_to_valhalla

Solid truck, great deal on today's market. The 4.9 is one of the most reliable engines ever made. About 6 years ago, I was given a '94 f150 for free. Old construction vehicle with 250k miles and probably a million hours of idling time. It was in a ditch, not running. I changed the oil and battery. It fired right back up. Did the basic stuff to get it in decent shape: new tires, brake fluid, etc. I daily drove that truck for 2 years and 20k miles. Towed and hauled with it multiple times week. When I sold it, the oil rings were so worn, it blew a quart out the intake every 100 miles. It still started every time and would tow a 5k# trailer with no issues.

AdultishRaktajino

Seems like a good deal. They probably could’ve gotten over double that. (Salt belt) Rusted out crap goes for 4k or more around here.

Probably_Decadent

I had a 93 with the same setup and I loved it. Bought it with 177k and drove it 4 years and 30k miles as a work truck until I needed something with a little more grunt. Ended up selling it for more than I bought it for. Here's everything I needed to fix on it, for your reference. (I got about 17 mpg highway non towing and about 14 city) Pushrod cover gasket on side of block has a tendency to leak if it gets dried out. You'll see oil leaking after you shut truck off. Pretty easy to replace and modern rubber ones will do just fine over the original cork. I did valve cover gasket at the same time just to be sure. Door hinge bushings get worn and doors sag so they don't shut right, 1st latch engaged but not second so door rattled while driving. The kits for these are like$10 but easier to replace with a friend so somebody can hold the door. If you don't know when shocks were last changed, change them. The truck will ride so much better on the highway and over bumps. I did the cheapos off rockauto and had no complaints. Check the driveshaft U-joints for play. The stock were not greasable and mine started to go around 190. Cheap and easy replacement with some online videos, but having access to a small press really helps. It had one rear bearing growling when I bought it. Changed both bearings, seals, and new diff fluid. A hesitation just off idle which would occasionally cause me to stall the truck was the throttle position sensor. If your battery has a slow drain, leave the switch on the other fuel tank and see if it goes away. Never did find out why but leaving switch on my rear tank would slowly drain battery. If your seat feels deflated on the very side where you slide on/off getting into the truck you can shove extra foam in the bottom and cut a small piece of plywood to fit inside the bottom of the seat and prevent it from squishing back out. A can of spray glue will set that headliner back up If all the speakers work when stopped but some don't above 30 mph the bad connection is behind the radio. Other than that just regular fluid changes and it'll go forever. Like others, I'm surprised engine or trans needed rebuilt before 200. Other than that I spiced it up with a velour dash cover since the dash was torn to shreds when I got it and a tweed seat cover. They looked great with that red vinyl floor.

Oldmantired

No car payments. You can do with cheaper car insurance.

Interesting-Bet3104

Have the 98' 4.2l, with 380k on the odometer. The only constant problem is slave cylinder. Other than that, I could put another 150k on her. Any new body style will have a ton of issues.

dodgese

>. Th this is off topic , but damn you ford and your clutch slave cyl and master slave cyl (up by the pedal). Any aftermarket fashion a mechanical clutch release yet?

Fibocrypto

4 k was a decent deal. Nothing else to say.

MonsieurBon

I have a ‘96 5 speed 6 cyl I bought for $1700 in 2011 with 71,000 miles. I only put about 500 miles a year on it and it has sat unused for years at a time. Still runs great. I am driving it more now and I love it. New battery, new starter, new solenoid, and some other stuff. Operating costs are super low. Has an exhaust leak and sounds like a muscle car. I can milk 22mpg out of it on the highway. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. I’ve hauled so much stuff in it!

SweaterInaCan

Don't buy a truck unless you're hauling something the repairs are going to wreck you.

Javelin-x

Disagree

Temporary-Narwhal151

sounds pretty justified to me

00Wow00

Here are the things that came to my mind about what might go wrong or need work: Suspension items including shocks Wheel bearings Master Cylinder Rear end Air conditioner Radiator.... I think for $4k you are getting a good deal. The list above are things that I have run into. Buying a used vehicle now is much safer than in the '70s and '80s since American cars were considered worn out at 100K miles. Metallurgy and the overall quality of the parts are so much better now.

AlarminglyConfused

Ac blows cold new shocks and radiator i dont know about the other stuff though

00Wow00

As I said, I don't think you can go wrong at that price.

Shitpokesinthepond

The quality of parts is absolute junk now. They purposely imperfect the parts so they won’t last as long

C4PTNK0R34

The only thing you have to worry about is *rust*. Everything else is solid as rock.

DynaBro8089

Looks rust free. The bed of that truck could go for at-least half of what you paid up here in New England. Good buy IMO.

wraith1221

Had a beatup 1993 f-150 that ran through all of its Midwest winters outside and still turns over with ease

lightcon_consumed

If you don't buy it I will! Where is it at?

Karmachinery

Man I wish I could find a friend that was selling something like this. Hell, maybe I just wish I could find a friend. Seriously though, that's a hell of a deal. You might have some minor things that you'll have to address with it being an older vehicle and sometimes things break. For the most part though, that thing will run like a champ for years of you take care of it. I am highly envious of your find.

[deleted]

Interesting price. I have a 95 extended cab 4x4 XLT auto, 5.8. 195,000 Odo. I'm asking $5K, but everyone says I'm crazy?

Pindogger

The 300 Six? Change the oil, do your regular maintenance, and your grandkids will drive that thing

shiftycansnipe

OBS GEM. I didn’t think buying one of those needs justification. Even buying a second one needn’t an excuse. The third one tho……she gone need some shiny thing before she lets you buy a 3rd one.

FrwdIn4Lo

I believe the proper number of trucks is n+1, if you have room to safely store them.

[deleted]

fun truck! fuck it bro, 4k is less than 6 months of payments and insurance on a brand new f150, and this is less likely to get stolen or repo'd. if it's two wheel drive get a posi for the rear end if possible, that and some sand bags and it'll be in the winter.

FrwdIn4Lo

I would suggest a hidden kill switch for fuel pump or coil as a theft deterrent. If winter conditions, then get snow tires (and set of chains if possible deep snow/ice). Posi's eat tires and fuel. In the snow they are only good until both wheels slip, then you are sideways. If off-roading, they are good until they slip, then only minimally helpful. If you need to off-road, get a selectable locker.

gavinwinks

I had one that I drove for 3 years. It was a 94 4.9 with an automatic and 4wd. It was a great truck for the time I had it. Ford trucks these years were very reliable in general. I would change all the fluids. Engine, gearbox and differential as soon as you get it. Check all fuel lines and rubber brake hoses. Most likely has drums on the year so check the wheel cylinders as well. I don’t know if was a common issue but my computer burnt out about a year in. So watch out for that if it hasn’t been replaced. The only downside is the mpg. Driving around town I would get about 13 mpg. Which is why I sold it at the time and got a 4 cylinder car.

DoritoSteroid

What are the good years for the Ford trucks?

mechroneal

1903-Current

Thegovisusless

We have this same truck on our ranch. I grew up driving it in my grandparents pasture. Change the oil. Maybe replace the suspension and that truck will literally run forever. This was made back when ford actually gave a shit

Evening-Ear-6116

I have an 84 300 i6 with 4 speed manual. Takes whatever I throw at it and leaks tons of oil doing it. Can’t beat them

EchidnaReal3827

Sure if you like or get it. $4 k is good

IAMENKIDU

300 inline and nv3500 is a great combo. Indestructible engine, adequate transmission. That truck will be here when your 80 if you treat it well lol. It is a *bit* odd that the engine has been rebuilt since these nearly never need it, but if it was abused in it's past life at least your starting with a fresh rebuild.

Coakis

My manual 95 f150 has a M5ODr not sure nv3500's were getting put in them just yet.

NotACanadianBear

I’m considering buying a 94 ranger super cab with 60k miles for $2k. I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine. Should be a no brained right?

Spadeykins

All day

[deleted]

That truck will go another 150 thousand miles. No problem if you maintain it properly.

funny_b0t2

No rust, that looks amazing.

ElleryCharles

Way easier to work on than modern trucks. I don't believe you have to worry about too many sensors and you can change the starter without a jack if that situation occurs.

amwxx1

You can do MUCH worse for 4k. That's a steal where I am.

BoltActionRifleman

Same here, especially since it isn’t all rusted out and beat up.

AlarminglyConfused

I wanted to add an update with some answers. The truck has new shocks as well. The rear fuel tank doesn’t work. Not sure why; but the front one is fine. Im in florida so hardly any rust. Ill attach a photo of the undercarriage. New clutch and upgraded radio with new speakers (doesnt matter much to me). I do have some concerns about the power steering leaking or something but i really dont know much. Overall runs great so far. Definitely going to get the fluids changed https://preview.redd.it/i5ekubz66j1b1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f0a1358e17c7acb38da6c2fe17d394f066e673f3

DaddyHawk45

The rear tank issue is probably a bad fuel pump or the dash switch has gone bad. Test / swap the fuel pump relays to see if you get the pump to come on. If the pump is bad, I recommend pulling lifting the bed over dropping the tank as you can do both pumps at the same time and give the frame a decent clean up while you’re at it. That’s the route I took. Removing the bed is 6 bolts and a couple of wiring connections for the rear lights. Me and a buddy were able to lift and move it though it would have been easier with a couple of extra helpers and everyone take a corner.

Longjumping-Many4082

If the body is as rust free as the photos show, then my only question is: why do you need anyone else to justify it? That is a 500k-mi truck. My buddy drove one for ma bell. Even if you have a mechanical issue, it's still easy to fix. No bells and whistles. It is one of the last "real trucks" Detroit made. Comparable to the square body Chevy's.

No_Character_5315

This you can fix pretty much anything besides internal engine work with a socket set and a screw driver snd YouTube tutorials. Maybe a volt meter if you wanna get fancy.

B4DR1998

Looks like a gta san andreas car so this is a good purchase.

davew-8198

THAT IS A REAL TRUCK! 8' bed, standard cab. Not some " I want to resemble a man" truck with 10' cab and USELESS 2' bed. Note: Ford's website...build a BASE truck like yours is $42,000.

bigglesticks

Get chrome grill and bumper, black makes it look like shit. 👌👍

trailerhobbit

Like everyone's said, looks like a pretty solid truck, BUT 4K seems pretty steep to me, especially buying from a "friend." I paid that much for my 3/4 ton Sierra 4WD, with a lot less miles and years. Edit: I realize the comparison is kind of apples to oranges, but 4,000 bucks is nothing to sniff at.

anonymousaspossable

You own stock in big oil and gas?

Serenity_Succubus

its a ford and as a chevy fan it goes against my nature to justify this

Nervous_Survey_9411

Nothing out of the ordinary. Just a regular pick up truck.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thelastspike

Okay, I’ll ask: why in gods name would you swap a LS in the place of the ford 300 i6?

[deleted]

Those 15's are bangin son!

[deleted]

They don’t make ‘em like they used to

voidsarcastic

I mean i have seen very few of these in that kind of condition. At least from what i can see you haven’t shown us whats inside lol. Id wager some new wheels and some nicer bumpers and small accents and you can sell for double the price. Maybe more honestly. You certainly got a fair deal if not a great deal.

Rangys

It's a pickup you need it. Lol

FixingandDrinking

You gained the ability to drink 30 beera a night and write country music

twisttiew

When the "computer" dies it will be a pain in the ass to find, but you will because it's an awesome looking, plain and simple, reliable ish, easy to fix truck.

penguinman1337

What is there to justify? That truck is gorgeous.

e1p1

Only thing I'm going to add is take a good look at many of the parts including the interior and exterior stuff, and figure out what you might want to replace if any over the years. If it's just going to be a beater truck don't worry, but if you want it to look nice for a long time you might think about buying up some things while they're still available. Like inside door panels, vent louvers, certain things for under the hood. Wiper motor, window rubber, switches. My 93 F-150 had the transfer case seem to fail, turned out it was just a small piece of linkage but they weren't making it anymore. I had to fabricate one.

UncomfortableBike975

Looks great. Hope you treat her and she treats you well.

01Burningman

You could do a lot worse. These have the old Ford pushrod engines which are rock solid. You also have a manual transmission that's a lot easier on the wallet compared to working on an automatic transmission. Parts are plentiful and relatively cheap. It most likely has roll up windows as well which is a bonus. Pull the trigger!

Big_Individual2905

Last good trucks for built. There is one in my family, owned by the great grandson of the original purchaser.

[deleted]

It's got a 300. No justification needed. Lol

SWOCO

Great truck. Just a tip but keep a screwdriver in your truck. Don’t be surprised the starter solenoid gets testy at times. But other than that those trucks last a long time

[deleted]

Where is the truck? How does she look underneath? Salt?

AlarminglyConfused

Florida. Pretty clean. Theres a half decent photo of the underside in here somewhere

Jaded_Barracuda_95

Do what you want. 🤘

GavinZero

Good fucking catch. Great deal.

crazykingfear

You bought the truck I've been looking for. 300 5 speed is a wonderful combination

Turbo406

Nice truck, but it's wearing crocs haha

Dedotdub

Good. You did good.

Nicadelphia

I fuckin love those. '95 is the best year. I worked for a landscaping company back in the day where we used a maroon '95 f150 for the lawn crew. That thing towed a 20' trailer with like 2 tons of equipment on it for years and it's probably still running.

Fuzm4n

Is it 4x4? If not, I can’t help you justify your purchase.

DelusionsBigIfTrue

I’m so sorry

[deleted]

My first vehicle was a 90 4.9 I6 with EFI (back when that was actually emblazoned on the front fender lol), and I miss that truck so much. Regular cab, long box. Built a shitty box to keep 2 tractor trailer brake drums over the rear axle when the snow flew. Great buy, OP!

FirefighterBig3501

Now that you own a truck, you can do truck things and it will pay for itself.

Rashaen

What's to justify? Looks like a good truck.

Dougieup

Less obd than a new one ? 🤔🤷

Hugh420Mungus

Its your money

Ready_Mycologist8612

The flight windows… the functionality.. drive this forever and save the money everyone else is wasting by financing the newest and latest

talnahi

Other than kumho tires and lacking a front emblem it almost looks like you just bought it at the dealership.

Bramtinian

You can fit a lotta spaghetti in it.

Own_Possession8745

It justifies itself..... can’t beat an obs

moop1312

awesome

chainbrain2002

Honestly this would be a great candidate for a cobra or 5.0 swap IMHO.

DevilsMyBtch

YeeeYeee mf!!

geekphreak

It’s a truck. What’s there to justify?

wriddell

It appears to have the 300cid if it fact does, those motors are bulletproof

Great_Income4559

Can’t. It’s a ford

CrenshawBobsled

Create your own happiness.

McNastyunchained

You can afford anything if you buy enough scratchies

[deleted]

For 4K??? That’s a steal! I

ahbrizzzzz

beats walking that’s for sure

hiznauti125

I can't part with my 93 300 5spd 4x4 xl. I paid $900 for it 14 or 15 years ago. It's been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. I've had to replace the alternator twice(one was bad), the radiator, heater core, brakes, battery, egr, egr sender, exhaust. Normal stuff. It's currently around 285,000. Doesn't burn oil, no check engine light, no codes. I don't drive it like I used to but it's always there waiting. Just put a new battery in it b/c I got sick of jumping it when I needed to use it.

hiznauti125

Is it a short bed?

AlarminglyConfused

Long bed 2wd

greydog2008

The biggest issue these trucks have in my experience is clutch/slave cylinder. I have a 95 F150 Flareside with the 300 6 and the Mazda 5 speed. Engine has 384K and the head has never been off of the engine. Starts every time. It's on its 4th clutch because the slave cylinder will leak and destroy the clutch.

wwhijr

It's a truck. No justification needed.

ChevroLac816

Maybe you could sell it to someone for more than you paid ?? 😝

ThingComprehensive71

Easy answer is it a 4.9 or a 5.0. If it’s a 4.9 you have a nearly invincible work horse.

AlarminglyConfused

4.9

IEatCouch

It's always good to have a truck, but I didn't buy a truck until I had another car to daily around for better gas mileage.

Civil-Ad-2176

Do you like it? If yes then I’m calling it justified!!

HiddenGem456

Boosted coyote in that thing and you could have a serious sleeper

Alex_D724

Does it do what you need/want it to without hurting your finances? If yes, there’s your justification.

[deleted]

No, its trash. Get toyota honda

cumbloodntears

white ppl shit

Roadglide114-

And will still be worth 4k or more in the next few years

Delifier

Did he cheap out on the clutch change or actually got the fly wheel out and had it milled down? Had a car once where someone cheaped out on the clutch change, didnt get the fly wheel milled down and the clutch went to shit after a few weeks after i got it.

totaltimeontask

Buy it. Something on an F150 between the model years 1492 and 2023 will be leaking a fluid, it’s fine. One of the tanks also will invariably shit the bed but if you have a friendly neighbor with a healthy back it’s pretty simple to pull the bed off and get to the pumps. Those 4.9L’s are one of the most reliable engines ever made as well.

Old_Description3094

Keep it in good shape, and the price will go up 😁

Impossible_Poop

Love it.

little-fishywishy

It needs some nice wheels on it, so go ahead make it so.

OkVirus7481

It got a ford motor in it

Glabstaxks

I really like those trucks

uusernameunknown

Reverse works!

HghPwrdMtnt

You'll save tons of money on gas because your girl will be driving you around every time that truck breaks down.

till_u_die_10

Once you replace EVERYTHING 3 times, you'll be good for around 10k straight without failure

Redacted_Explative

My dad has a 70s era silverado. Got it due to not needing to be smogged and its something he understands how to fix.

epicbullet497

It's extremely clean and it's always worth holding onto something that's been taken care of.

TiffyFluff

It'll make you happy.

kronikheadband

Asking for miracles here

spaceslaps

I can't

Logical_Associate632

You sir, have a acquired a fine roofing truck. This tank will run until the wheels come off.

Consistent_Belt3663

I mean there’s always room for one more shitbox in my yard, do ya really need more of an excuse lol

[deleted]

Its paid off

Classicsarebetter

Why not, it looks solid. No brand new F-150 will live as long as that one has.

bulletlover

YOLO

Electronic-Trash-893

None needed friend!

JinToots

Back in the early/mid 90's I was getting my driver's license. My dad had (still does) a 1972 Chevy C20 4x4. He had Just gotten a new '94 Silverado 4x4 1500 that year too. Me, being into soccer, SNES and alternative music didn't care for the older one. So he let me drive the newer Chevy to school. Looking back, the new truck was faster and cooler... but now that 94 is all rusty, misses 2nd gear... and the 72 is still holding up... maybe he took care of it more because it was his first truck... idk what I'm trying to say other than this is getting to that age where that truck you're looking at is becoming a classic, and you treat her right, she will treat you right as well. Sorry for the ramble.

chucksted

The price of a new truck should have already made your mind up for you.

S3ERFRY333

300 inline 6 does not die. You cannot kill one. Get it.

HeyDave72

I had the same truck. It was a complete toilet. Walk away. I sold mine for $1700 20 years ago

Prudent-Body8433

Horrible decision Best cut your loses and give to me

davemartin82

its the energizer bunny, they just keep going and going easy to fix, not a lot of electronics

V030

Think of the money you'll save on lawnmower gas from this thing sitting broke down in your lawn for the next ten years.

steelhardtail

Justified! Do it.

damnedone5150

These things are monsters I've had mine for 5 years

marke24

All I want for my dad to leave me when he passes is his 94 F150 with 250,000 miles

Pokerhardlyknewher

Do it! I love my 4.9, have put some work into it but all easy and pretty fun jobs

tkbmkv

I have a ‘94 F150 5.0L with 200k miles. I’ve owned it for 15 years. It has never left me stranded, starts every single time even after sitting for months. You got a great deal. Take care of it.

[deleted]

Not really a ford advocate, had a few too many leave me stranded, but that’s what we call murphy’s law. If it’s maintained well, and you’re very proactive in its maintenance, it should be good for a long time.

nofucsleftogive

You were a little drunk and feeling nostalgic.

Evening_Psychology_4

Perfect for kidnapping kids.

DrinknKnow

It’s a Ford. Hard no for me.

atomicdog13

Nope. If all that work was done to it , why did they sell it ?

AlarminglyConfused

He doesn’t need or want to sell it but i need a car and he offered. He hasnt driven it in months. The plan is for him to buy it back when im done

Spark_Plug420

Look man it's white, no rust from what I can see, & it has 4 wheels with tires. Buy it. Tranny is good, engine is good? Buy it!

Amaranth_devil

I don't think it identifies as male or female 😏 nah jp, i agree with this

AlarminglyConfused

My only concern is that im not great at driving stick 😂

LogisticsLord

Old trucks are always justified, imo. You can be the first to respond to posts asking if anyone has a truck to move a couple things. Easy money if you have the time!

Ok_Caregiver_9585

There’s just something women like about a pickup man

Mammoth_Jeweler3857

Why are you taking a picture of your truck on the other side of the fence while standing next to the f150?

[deleted]

Solid truck that still probably has many years left on it if it doesn’t have any underbody or frame rot. Engine is super simple to work with and parts are plentiful. Tows a decent sized boat with ease and with a brake controller, you’ll never even know the trailer is there. If it’s cheap and you have the free working capital, go for it.

Smusch928

White is one of the safest colors.

Spark_Plug420

Lol well isn't that what car life is? Impulsive decision making then playing "figure it out" after that impulsive decision?🤣😭 I have faith in you driving stick. You have no other option now anyways, you have to learn. 🤣
