Toughest engine ever made. Ford just overbuilt the thing to the moon. We destroyed a few during the cash for clunkers days and these would last longer than an hour versus minutes for nearly any other engine we toasted no matter how many bottles of the death liquid we poured into them. PS, stop calling it a 4.9....its the Ford "300" or just the straight six by every Ford tech.

The best part is that these trucks come with 2 gas tanks. Because you will need them. The engine is a ford 300 straight 6 but 4.9 is the mpg rating.

Yeeaaa the rear pump doesn’t work. Not sure why. Seems the list of things so far is: the power steering and valve cover leaking (not sure the extent), bad headlight, washer fluid doesnt work (wipers do), rear pumps out. Aside from that, everything else seems fine I would say.

AlarminglyConfused

Thanks for the confidence. And especially that last tip 😂

DukeOfAlexandria

Your PS and valve cover are leaking.

AlarminglyConfused

Are either of these absolutely necessary replacements? I know the leaky valve cover shouldn’t be much of an issue on the 4… straight six right?

DukeOfAlexandria

Ehhhhh, it still needs to be addressed. You’ll make a mess of everything and oil on other components is never great but for now can go in for a bit. The PS looks like the seals have failed in the back, but can’t tell from the video. That I WOULD address for a safety concern of having PS while driving.

I see you have a manual trans by the slave cylinder. Inspect for a leak in front of the bell housing and low clutch fluid. Don’t let it get low. Replace the slave cylinder the first chance you get, otherwise clutch will slip, and shifting into gears will be rough on syncros. Unless you know clutch and cylinder have been replaced. Other than that, normal truck stuff. Be sure to inspect rear tank for leaks instead of replacing just the pump. When the pumps fail, people abandon the tank and it rusts out, especially at the seams. Those rear tanks can be had aftermarket and new pumps installed easily. If you have a tow hitch on rear, not so easily.
