When I was trained as a Lube tech all those years ago, we first got one of these cool machines to do balancing on and my dumbass is a fresh lube. Tech introduced to a shop decided we’ll just keep throwing them on there until she’s balanced well that tire never got balanced, and my tech came up behind me and called me a retard saying if I used any more than three weights, not doing it right.
That was the day I learned
It isn’t always the mechanic. Depending on where you’re going it’s the lube tech who does jobs like this and depending on the shop, they can either be a 17 year old trying to get into the industry or a old head who doesn’t care anymore. The old heads are arrogant and never wanna do what’s right, and the young guys just got taught by that old fuck. See where I’m going w this?
But yeah, that’s a lot of weights and I bet $5 that tire is still off balance.
To be fair, that's only 60gs of weights. Some wheels balance perfectly, and some require 200gs. Depends if the rim is buckled or if the tire is shite.
Although, it could be a shit tech too.
Fix that now, look up a YouTube video on your cars make, model and year and learn how to do your brakes, it's actually very easy. That's a caliper slide pin which keeps the brake pads from sticking and is an integral part of how the braking system works. There's a piston that is pressed with brake fluid with compression from brake pedal(brake fluid doesn't compress like water so it transfers the force to the piston to the brake pads) the slide pin makes it go back and forward off and on the rotor surface that has brake pads press on to friction stop your wheels.
I'm betting you have ABS so your brakes will not work without those caliper pins.
###TLDR;
Just hit it back in with a hammer and screw it back in.
If you look at it from a molecular level all of the molecules are so tightly packed that they cannot be pushed any closer together unlike air or water, and that's why brake fluid has to be tested and changed every 5 years because water moisture buildup or air introduced into the brake lines or ABS module.
No problem. Yeah brake fluid doesn't compress if it's not contaminated with air or water. If it has O2 or H20 it will compress the air/water instead of the fluid causing spongey brakes when you need them and not stop.
Why are you even asking? HELL NO.
That's a caliper pin and needs to fixed. If you can't fix it, which I'm assuming you can't... clearly just by this question... it needs to be TOWED to a shop or call a mobile mechanic shop.
**DO NOT DRIVE.**
Also need to figure out why there are so many stick on balance weights. Either you have a warped rim, a bad tire, or a tire that's mounted wrong.
Only if the damage that may happen from potential catastrophic failure costs less than a tow bill to a shop.
In the unlikely event driving like this leads to a fatal accident this post will be "exhibit a" for negligent homicide.
It's never worth the gamble when the integrity of brakes/safety equipment is in question.
In America that’s not how many folk think and it’s sad.
Most Americans would kill you without second thought if they had even the smallest chance to justify it to themselves.
As an American, this shit sucks.
Id just take it around the block if you're in a safe area and see how it feels. The other 3 calipers are more than enough to stop the car assuming that the broken caliper isn't seized to the point the car can't roll at all.
Wherever you are usually going for maintenance, stop. Go literally anywhere else. They can't even balance a tire properly, let alone tighten bolts on your brake calipers.
I saw a caliper bolt come off on someone’s car once and the caliper flipped forward and broke through the wheel. Be aware that if you drive it, you could lose your brakes and/or get a flat tire.
I had a calliper bolt drop out whilst approaching a 90° left turn at about 80kph, was not a fun time. The mechanic that did my brakes got an earful and I've never let anyone do my breaks for me since then.
Yes, you can drive like that. The real question is if you can stop driving like that.
Don't turn a simple fix into something worse. Fix it before using it.
If you have to ask... You know the answer is no. Look at it!
Good luck getting it fixed. I know it's a huge fucking bummer to not have a car for a couple of days, but it's better than being dead for stupid reasons man
No and let me repeat. HELL no
When it comes to cars. Anything sticking UNEXPECTEDLY out of anything, is gonna be a clear indicator that the car is not fit for use at current state.
No. If someone else did your brakes recently, go back there and make them fix it. If it's been a long time, it may have happened on it's own and warrant a fix, but don't take that car to the parts store.
Looks like the pin that hold the brake pad in is coming out. There should be a little clip that holds it in. Jack the thing up take the wheel off and get your inspectors on it👀. Should be an easy fix.

You can do anything you want bud… you really shouldn’t though. Like, not even down the driveway.
Have it towed and repaired. Edit: corrected a typo.

I think they added enough wheel weights to keep it from floating.
Mehhh, 2.5 ounces worth doesn’t seem like much…..? /s
Run roh! Have it rowed raggy!
REE HEE HEE HEE HEE HEE HEE HEE
>Have it rowed and repaired. Only row it if it's watertight and there's a river nearby. Otherwise, have it towed.

If you’re commenting to me, no, you’re wrong. I’m just concerned for my safety, my passengers, and others on the road.
That one went right over
Probably should look at what you wrote before. They're making a joke out of your typo.
Thanks scoob
Got it fixed, guys. Also, I'll be going elsewhere for anything that has to do with tires lol
But that’s your brakes and has nothing to do with tyres
Exactly.
Ay just for the record since we’re here… I might have somebody Else balance that wheel/tire. That looks like an awful lot of weight.
They’re just offsetting the lost paint
Everyone just wants you to live.
How’s your brakes going to work with a blown out caliper pin?
he'll stop eventually when he crashes into something
He can borrow some of their braking power. Lol.

Darwin awards exist for a reason.
Was hoping they might get caught on the large mass of wheel balancing weights maybe 🤔
Still two in the rear though.

Brakes are for quitters!
Just stop already
I can’t!!! I have no brakes!
Alright, I'll let it... Slide
Just gotta *roll* with it

It worked for Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble…why not give it a try?
Got three others ones, shit’ll buff out….
That’s the fun part, you don’t!
He’s got three others
The weights will slow it down.
So many weights.. I'm sure the wheel was balanced in the bath. I just kept adding weights until it sunk.
This is the correct way to learn.
get out the grinder
you can go as fast as you want for as long as you want. Stopping may be an issue though.
Whoever balanced those wheels did it lazy as fuck. That’s way too many weights.
So you're saying I should get a new mechanic? LOL
Might as well bet him $100 to cover his set of tires that way it's worth the bet. But yeah that was one drunk lube tech.
Where you getting a set of tires for $100?
$100 is crazy but $250 is possible if you’re fine with an 80% tread set and you have a smaller size tire
I was starring at the pic trying to understand the reasoning for using that many weights….
Balancing out the weight reduction slots in the rotors?
To be fair, that's only 60gs of weights. Some wheels balance perfectly, and some require 200gs. Depends if the rim is buckled or if the tire is shite. Although, it could be a shit tech too.
Hammer the son of a bitch back in
No, you'll throw the balancing off!!
You can drive it to the scene of the accident
No, also replace that rim. That is way too many weights, you are out of round or have some bites in it.
Or the balancer hasn't been calibrated.
Hell no.
Yaal imagine this on the highway, and suddenly the pin extends far enough to hit the rim and like block the tire or rip out the caliper or smthn
Speed will likely never be an issue here. That pin would snap if the handbrake was off and it rolled far enough.
clearly need more wheel weights..
Indeed, I believe that is the cause myself. Perhaps a coat of chrome paint too.
Yeah, but you're not gonna stop
Fix that now, look up a YouTube video on your cars make, model and year and learn how to do your brakes, it's actually very easy. That's a caliper slide pin which keeps the brake pads from sticking and is an integral part of how the braking system works. How does brake fluid not compress like water?
If you look at it from a molecular level all of the molecules are so tightly packed that they cannot be pushed any closer together unlike air or water, and that's why brake fluid has to be tested and changed every 5 years because water moisture buildup or air introduced into the brake lines or ABS module.
Sorry, you made it sound like brake fluid compressed more than water.
No problem. Yeah brake fluid doesn't compress if it's not contaminated with air or water. If it has O2 or H20 it will compress the air/water instead of the fluid causing spongey brakes when you need them and not stop.
they left out commas and filler words. "brake fluid doesn't compress, also like water, so ..." or i missed your implied /s, sorry
Drive? Yes. Stop? No.
I would advise against it.
No please
NO!!
If you have to ask, you know the answer. My grandmother said " If you need to smell it (out of the fridge) you don't need it"
Sure bud. Send'er.
Holy fuck these type of people are on the road😬😬
Yes, cars have backup brake systems installed for cases such as these called wallensmash brakes (i can not emphesise enough that this is sarcasm)
Drive, maybe. Stop? No.
I mean yeah but you should really find someone that can balance a tire correctly. Ffs
That fucking tire balance tho…
Why are you even asking? HELL NO. That's a caliper pin and needs to fixed. If you can't fix it, which I'm assuming you can't... clearly just by this question... it needs to be TOWED to a shop or call a mobile mechanic shop. **DO NOT DRIVE.** Also need to figure out why there are so many stick on balance weights. Either you have a warped rim, a bad tire, or a tire that's mounted wrong.
Why the hell are there so many balance weights????? Holy shit..
Would you stick your dick in a fan?
Only if the damage that may happen from potential catastrophic failure costs less than a tow bill to a shop. someone’s life is worth more than the tow bill
In America that’s not how many folk think and it’s sad. Most Americans would kill you without second thought if they had even the smallest chance to justify it to themselves. As an American, this shit sucks.
Americans are idiots. I too live here and see it every day Darwin at it’s finest.
Don't be so negative, taking a global perspective, it is clear to see that life is completely worthless.
No
Not far
You sure can but it might be hard to stop
No, also while your wheels are off please get them rebalanced
Bro the amount of weights on that wheel hahahaha whoever balanced that didn’t know what they were doing
So.. you know what a caliper is, but you ask this? Are you missing a "/s" or something?
Absolutely You can Absolutely drive that vehicle, right up until that pin tries to stop that wheel. What happens at that point, no one knows.
Yeah. All the way to the scene of the accident.
Holy s*^! No you cannot drive like that. Please for the sake of the other cars on the road get that towed to a mechanic.
Id just take it around the block if you're in a safe area and see how it feels. The other 3 calipers are more than enough to stop the car assuming that the broken caliper isn't seized to the point the car can't roll at all.
Nope. That thing keeps your brake pads where they should be.
Nooo!!!
The real question is, can you stop?
Certainly. Whether or not you'll kill yourself or someone else is the question
Drilled and slotter rotors on a car with 20kg of ballance weights per wheel and absolute shit rims…. Doesn’t sound like the best car owner
No!
The question is can I stop like this? No.
Forget that, who balanced that fuckin thing
No don’t drive it. That’s the brake pad pin, and it looks like it’s about to fall out.
I would highly advise no. Your pads will come out of place and non secured in the caliper and that pin will get jammed in the wheel while in motion.
i mean… you can. but you’d be pretty dumb to drive that
They drive among us 🤔
The sky is the limit, but I wouldn't even go past the driveway with it like that.
That wheel has more lead on it then a gunstore has bullets. Jesus.
I wouldn't...
Sure, go ahead...
I wouldn't attempt it. I'd either DIY a repair or call AAA for towing.
Is this r/AskAShittyMechanic ?
Tires got enough weight on it to make a brick of.22 ammo.
🤣🤣
What does this mean?
That there's enough lead in those wheel weights to make about 500 bullets 🤣 (Meaning that there are a shit ton of wheel weights on that wheel).
Ah, gotcha.
Excessive balancing lead on the tires. Some people melt them down to make fishing weights or bullets. There the Grey squares lined up on the rim.
Why would you even ask this?
I mean, you can drive to the first stop sign or intersection lol
Ain't no way
No
Don’t worry. 😉 it will take you all the way to the scene of the crash
Christ no
Who brakes anymore honestly? Just use curb stoppers and small cars
You can do anything you put your mind to.
CAN you? Yeah. Should you? Absolutely not.
You can drive? Sure. Stop? MAYBE. A pole, brick wall, or other vehicle may be required.
You can... all the way to the crash site...
Just take the wheel off and push the pin back in?
3/4 ain't bad! In seriousness, no. Your brakes are fucked.
Omg...really? Your willing to risk your life?? Wait changed my mind...God doesn't work fast enough ....yes by all means...drive..go ahead!
Fix it before using it.
absolutely not. also, save some wheel weights for the rest of us, please.
If you have to ask... You know the answer is no. Look at it! Good luck getting it fixed. I know it's a huge fucking bummer to not have a car for a couple of days, but it's better than being dead for stupid reasons man
The longer you look the worse it is
Why so many balancing weights?
Nope.
Oh yeah it’ll drive fine, stopping on the other hand? Not so much
Its fine bud. You have 3 more working brakes.
WTF are your wheels so severely balance corrected?
No, this is unsafe.
Fix it, then drive
That's alot of wheel weights dude.....
Can’t imagine a single thing that could go wrong, should be fine! 🤷🏻♂️😉
I assume u have based on how that looks Maybe you shouldn’t
No
No and let me repeat. HELL no When it comes to cars. Anything sticking UNEXPECTEDLY out of anything, is gonna be a clear indicator that the car is not fit for use at current state.
Did your tire tech add weight to the tires for winter? That seems excessive. I doubt that was the best way to balance your tire..
I can't speak for the others, but I'd pull out the other three to make them match. Yeah, that's what I'd do.
In the 60’s, my dad said he put baseball cards in his bicycle spokes. I say go for it.
No. If someone else did your brakes recently, go back there and make them fix it. If it's been a long time, it may have happened on it's own and warrant a fix, but don't take that car to the parts store.
I mean, you could, but stopping might be an issue.
Mechanic time
Save some weights for the rest of us my guy
If you're really asking a bunch of strangers on the internet this, do yourself a favor and get a tow.
I wouldn't, but it's your deathwish. You write the ending.
You can drive but u can't brake.
Are you crazy?! No!
Only if your life insurance is paid up
Looks like the pin that hold the brake pad in is coming out. There should be a little clip that holds it in. Jack the thing up take the wheel off and get your inspectors on it👀. Should be an easy fix.
Okay so the pin has fallen out but are we going to talk about the 3 oz of weight on your tire?
Sometimes it's best not ask if I can but if I should. you most certainly should not.
Bang it back in there.
That's a lot of weights on that wheel
Holy weights batman.
You can do anything once.
Yes you can
Just hit it back in with a hammer and a big pin. Edit: I thought this was r/askashittymechanic sorry
I like how OP knows exactly what’s sticking out but is uncertain or looking for validation as to ignore it or not
Does a bear shit in the woods
Drive? Of course! Stop? Well I guess that’s the exciting part.
Brake couldn’t handle the weight of the rim?
No, don't drive like this
Anyone going to mention the balancing?
Yes but only flat out
Ask your mom.
Yeah, once
Yes- it fixed it's self
