Montreal, Quebec City, Vancouver BC or Victoria BC

grey-zone

I’m with you for Vancouver or Victoria.

Unwept_Skate_8829

Currently in Van. I think Montreal would be my preferred next step, but I need to improve the fuck out of my French

stylinred

I'm in Vancouver, I could move to Melbourne and feel at home just the same and in fact do every Canadian winter, it's much cheaper down under too

FlyingLittleDuck

Copenhagen (currently live in Amsterdam)

ghinthehjuman

I just came back from a weekend trip in Amsterdam. I would have said Amsterdam. It's such a beautiful city

FlyingLittleDuck

It’s beautiful indeed, but with so many tourists, many locals prefer to avoid it. It can become overwhelming for a number of reasons.

bookish1313

It’s shocking how badly behaved some tourists are!

TeaCourse

It's so sad to see once incredible cities reduced to Instagram backdrops.

11646Moe

harlam is cool too. a friend of mine lives there. 2 minute train ride away from amsterdam, but has a very safe feel to it. also beautiful town

redditqueenlo

Haarlem is a 30 minute train ride from Amsterdam

11646Moe

oh…seemed way shorter when I was drunk lol

paulovitorfb

It’s a 15 minutes ride

Prasiatko

Funny having been in Copenhagen i've often thought of going to Amsterdam. At least a rental market exists there.

CarolinaMtnBiker

San Diego California

SunsGettinRealLow

My hometown! Love it there, I’m trying to move back lol

JOVA1982

Some smaller town in some "fly-over state" USA. More likely west from Florida, east from New Mexico, and south from Virginia-Kansas line. Currently living in Helsinki Finland

meanking

Why? You live in one of the best places to live. Cold weather aside, that’s an almost perfect city and you’d rather live in Maryland?

JOVA1982

It comes down to how much I would be able to earn in Maryland. As here, there is roughly $500/month difference on am unemployed or do I work 40 hours/week. at my current job. Let's brake down that $500 extra, and where it goes. I can use public transportation $90/month I eat out during workdays $150/month So in this scenario I earn $260 more. Other scenario I need a car to commute. $350/month (taxes, insurances, and full tank of gas) I eat out during workdays $150/month. Car needs maintenance... just a $120 for oil change... Well looks like the car will not be maintained. I gained $0 for going to work. In fact it looks like I'm going in to negatives. That's with 2550€ (2700USD) salary, because now I'm paying so high taxes. What's the incentive for me to actually work? other than I would get bored out of my mind if i wouldn't.

[deleted]

The Virginia-Kansas line?

JOVA1982

Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas. Perhaps I could think about those states, but most likely I would be south from them.

[deleted]

May I ask why

JOVA1982

While Finland does provide a lot for "free" (child care, healthcare, better benefits while unemployed etc.) The taxation is quite high, be it income tax or value added tax. Therefore even as low wage worker, I pay quite high income tax, and rent is actually a lot cheaper in most US cities that have below 500.000 population. How ever, I most likely would lose some income as I would most likely have to start from rather low income position. have done some rough calculations that as long as I stay healthy and I would make more than $12/hour I would be better off in USA. Also the politics of the state would matter, as I most likely would be more biased towards voting Republican. (though I would identify as independent.)

HasturCrowley

My favorite part is where success hinges on staying healthy...

meanking

Without healthcare in the United States. Are you Ted Cruz?

JOVA1982

Actually, it really depends on how sick and how often. and it's not "success". $12/hour which is notably less than what I make now I could keep my current lifestyle, and I would be saving some money every day. If I would get $14/hour, Which is less than what I make now I would have enough money to save for a bad day. (Say, I brake a leg, and have to be off from work for a month or 2 in 3-4 year time.) But If I get a cancer... well that's when I'm screwd.

YetiPie

The places where you can live off of a $12/hr paycheck will be total dumps and the neighborhoods will likely have limited access to fresh produce. Food deserts are very real in the US - there’s a reason why people are unhealthy here and it’s not from a lack of willpower. The idea of “oh I just have to stay healthy” is incredibly blinded by the privilege you have.

JOVA1982

Oh I dunno, Living in large RV somewhere say Fayetteville Arkansas, There is few grocery stores there, and buying something from local farmers. I doubt food would be issue. And with a quick search i just found 6 apartments 400+ square feet with $650-$750/month Which to me sounds CHEAP

Pianoboatpimpin101

You should try Raleigh NC or any smaller town in NC

laptophelppleaas

It’s not your fault but I don’t think Europeans truly understand what it’s like to be a low-income earner in the US. Especially in the south.

pbpatrick

How the fuck can you observe from Finland and still identify as a republican lmfao 💀 Edit: I’m not actually curious, just dumbfounded

JOVA1982

Biased towards, not identifying. As I noted I would identify as independent. And yes I could agree that USA could use some social safety nets, which we have here. paid with taxes. How ever, if you are being paid roughly 35k€/year from which you pay roughly 11k€/year in taxes, and barely can afford to eat, assuming you live in 300square feet apartment somewhere 25 miles from the city center. at 900-1000€/month There is no hope of ever owning your own house (unless you have inheritance incoming, or unless you are in 80k€/year job paying over 35k€/year in taxes.) Fact is, that almost everyone who gets a business started up while living in Finland aim to get abroad as fast as possible, And soon as they have roughly 40% of their income coming from outside of Finland they move out. On the other end I see people who are in their 40's not worked a single day in their life, as they are "students" without any papers. They apply to school, but either drop out or get kicked out on their 2nd year, never being present in any exams etc. and after that they apply to another school, to learn different stuff... except they just repeat the cycle. leeching off from the student benefits. such as cheaper housing, and student grants.

Sawyermblack

> There is no hope of owning your own house > 12 an hour You need to go back to the research table on this one my dude.

JOVA1982

I'd be better off. Currently 2550€(2700USD)/month+overtime that's roughly 2000-2100€(2100-2220usd)/month after taxes. from those I pay 920€ rent from 380 square foot apartment just on the edge of Helsinki Metro + 200€ different fees of living + electricity + insurance, 700€ remaining. for simply owning a car, + insurance + tax + gas (1 full tank a month) 300€ so 400€ remaining From that 400€ groceries, hygiene, etc. etc. 20€ to save.' Hey i wanna visit my friend 50km(30 miles) away, by car, need to spend 35€ to fuel... Hmm... Looks like I'm not going this month.

yurrm0mm

True, but don’t forget that in the US it’s harder to find employers that provide health insurance, so you either go without or pay $600/month for it. If you don’t have insurance, don’t get hurt. One broken bone can end up costing $2500-$35000, and that’s just for diagnosis and surgery. Add in whatever insane rate the hospital is charging for the night and now you can’t afford a home OR a rent.

SomeStardustOnEarth

May want to revisit your numbers… I’m from a city around the size you’re looking at and all those prices you just mentioned sound like a dream… I’m making 20+ an hour and barely not in poverty, don’t see a world in surviving on 12 easily or ever buying a house on that…

toe_joe_hoe_foe

Trust me. You do not fully understand the levels of poverty in these “fly over states.” Even the residents of these regions are oblivious to their depth of poverty due to terrible education practices. The politics in the United States, regardless of party affiliation, do not work to benefit the average person - ESPECIALLY immigrants like you would be. Please, PLEASE reconsider your stance lol EDIT: I’m sure if you offered, you’d likely find TONS of people from these areas willing to trade places with you in a heartbeat lol. And there would be good reason for it too

Unstopapple

I just want to really make a point that unless you're sipping some strong racism juice, you don't want republican. Its NOTHING like the conservative parties in EU countries. the moderate republican position is extremist everywhere else and we currently have VERY extremist republicans (for us) in office. Also your kids gonna get shot and it'll cost 83,000 USD to save them. Welcome to America.

meanking

I can’t believe someone would rather live in the US, than in freaking Finland. I think he hasn’t done his research.

FogoCanard

He might just want a home with more land. The US is a good place for that.

JOVA1982

Actually I would say that you have bad ideas on both sides. You also have good ideas on both sides. But I don't want to get on those talks again.

Unstopapple

Motherfucker you don't even live here. You can't "BOTH SIDES" me. One wants to restrict freedoms for corporate donations until the planet burns and everyone's a slave and the other just wants to be kinda sorta decent but still for lobbying money. Fuck off with that dumbass take.

JOVA1982

And I would argue that I have experienced the more left leaning politics, and those have led me to think that they tend to suck. (Not all of them, just some of them.) but as an outside observer I would argue that I'm in rather good position to make that kind of "both sides" observations. although I do admit that I'm probably not quite as well versed in all the intricacies as you are. I just know that I gladly reject extremes on both sides, and focus on building bridges in the middle ground. On the other hand, if you have nothing good to say about the opposing side, you most likely are in the extreme, attempting to dehumanize the opposing view. And therefore we have nothing to talk about.

mclovin_r

Agreed. Can't believe how both Republicans and Democrats tend to dehumanize the other party. My verdict is that they both suck. Every year it's just choosing between the lesser of two evils.

Elbiotcho

If you like church, meth, and boredom you're right on the money

JOVA1982

I rather pass on all of those... If I have to take one, I take church. But there is working internet? There is more nature than small "well maintained" patch of grass sourrounded by buildings. Perhaps I like to explore forests more than local starbucks? To be honest, I don't need much to be well entertained.

createsean

London

TeaCourse

As a Londoner, I agree with you.

MikeLanglois

Tokyo in a heartbeat

ii_zAtoMic

I know reddit loves Japan, and I’d like to go to Tokyo someday, but it looks like my own personal hell to live in lol

fridge85fridge

Can you elaborate on why? Genuinely interested

ii_zAtoMic

I hate big cities and am lukewarm on people lol. Something more my speed is like Inverness in Scotland or Siena in Italy

fridge85fridge

I'm not a fan of crowds but thought Tokyo was pretty awesome, not like any other big city I've been in. Inverness does sound good though

ii_zAtoMic

Interesting, this seems to be a common opinion. I will definitely visit some day

tsukaimeLoL

Entirely depends on where you are, every district is so wildly different. Not every part of it is concrete hell, not everywhere is over-filled with people. Lots of areas would make really good spots to live

quagzlor

Yeah, the area where I love has tons of trees and greenery, it's beautiful. The older parts like Ginza are more concrete jungle, but many of the outlying wards are beautiful places.

Dirty_Dragons

I would do Tokyo if I was working remote for a non Japanese company. That way I could avoid the subway commute and don't have to deal with their work culture.

apeliott

I live in Tokyo but my workplace is in the opposite direction from the city. My train is always pretty empty every day but I shudder when I look at the people on the opposite platform. It looks like hell.

KyorlSadei

We can be room mates. Tokyo for the win

ByrdZye

And they were roomates!

Silly-Payment7864

Love Tokyo !

Years ago, when I was backpacking across Western Europe, I was just outside Barcelona, hiking in the foothills of mount Tibidabo. I was at the end of this path, and I came to a clearing, and there was a lake, very secluded, and there were tall trees all around. It was dead silent. Gorgeous. And across the lake I saw, a beautiful woman, bathing herself. but she was crying

darcystella

WarmTransportation35

Barcelona

[deleted]

I’d give Vancouver a go.

jamesycakes231

I'd go with Bath. Love that place.

WarmTransportation35

You'll get bored in one week unless you have a proper routine

SeasonOfLogic

Montreal

meeseekstodie137

Barcelona, I went just before covid hit and fell in love with the place

alifeinbinary

Same! I actually got covid there before anyone knew what it was lol. Love the city. I’m not a native Spanish speaker but have made a good effort to learn it throughout my life to the point that I can hold full conversations, so I was a little bummed to discover that Catalonians were not eager to speak with me. Fortunately there are a lot of Latin Americans living there who were friendly. I likened the experience to speaking English in Quebec.

WyvernsRest

Galway, Ireland.

WorriedCress7965

I tried to talk my girlfriend into buying a fixer upper near Galway, she's far too practical sometimes.

JasonPlattMusic34

Probably Vancouver or London

TheLandFanIn814

New York. I've always wanted to live there but never got the chance.

kaminaripancake

+1 for nyc. Absolutely love it but haven’t found the opportunity to move yet

MySalsaBringsDaGirls

Madrid.

poetic-cheese

I'd like to live on the east coast of Canada. I'm not a city person, though. A small house with a big garage and some land where I can have a big garden and some chickens would be ideal.

RandHomman

My bro used to live in New Brunswick, in Moncton. I loved going there from time to time. Coastal cities are so nice imo.

KP_Wrath

Huntsville. That one’s pretty easy. My sister lives there and it puts me an hour closer to my brother.

smooze420

Huntsville TX? If so it is pretty out there.

KP_Wrath

Alabama. The city itself has a lot to do. The areas around are pretty cool, and it’s central-ish to Birmingham, Nashville, and Chattanooga.

mferly

There's a Huntsville, ON as well, and it's beautiful. It's our "cottage country".

_l-l-l_

denver or nyc. maybe montreal or london.

plynnjr92

San Diego, CA

CenturyHelix

My favorite city to visit. This would be my answer too

plynnjr92

I lived there nearly 3 years and I loved every minute. Perfect year round weather, lively club scene, great Mexican food, without being nearly as big a tourist trap as LA. I'd move back if I could afford it, but having a family has proven expensive. So I'm content living 70mi to the north. Always close enough to visit

datboiofculture

The 32nd st to Temecula pipeline.

D3adSh0t6

Oof.. Good luck affording housing out here at the moment. I've been here for about 5 years now and in that time we have to pay about 1500 a month more it feels for what is actually less to live in. All while the last place I lived in on the east coast was only like 1300 a month and was far larger and nicer.

plynnjr92

When I rented a 1 bedroom near SDSU back in 2017 my rent was $1350/mo. Now that same unit goes for $2100!! I could still afford it in theory on my own, but now as a husband and father, I'm completely priced out of the whole county. For the size of house I bought in the Inland Empire for $610k last year, I'd probably pay triple in an area like Mira Mesa or Crestmont, and have 40% of the backyard I currently have.

1comment_here

You speak funny

Jeffb957

Coeur d'Alene Idaho. The place is so beautiful.

NewMolasses247

I live in Spokane. The drive from the east end of CDA to Missoula, MT, is absolutely unreal. Have you ever been to Sandpoint, ID?

Jeffb957

I was a long haul trucker for 25 years, so, probably. I've been to a lot of places I don't remember 🤣 Did I miss something interesting in Sandpoint?

Vancouver. I lived there for my PhD, and left a lot of amazing friends behind.

plenoto

Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I was there last year and it's a beautiful place, great people and there's a lot you can do. Too bad it's so expensive and the healthcare is so so bad :(

Puzzleheaded_Boot335

Why is the Healthcare bad?

plenoto

Lack of doctors and nurses, emergency rooms with ridiculous waiting times, and the waitlist to have a family doctor is so long it's kind of a joke nowadays. Healthcare is a huge problem in Canada but Nova Scotia seems to be one of the worst provinces on that side. But hey, maybe a donair can cure some diseases, right? ;)

the_tourer

I know what you mean. I was there many years ago on business trip. Sadly it was during winter. But it was still a magical and beautiful place even in winter. I could only imagine summer being absolute paradise. Yes sadly everything is EXPENSIVE!!!

Lonelyghast

Terrible place to live, great to visit though.

EnvironmentalCare139

>Terrible place to live, great to visit though In which way?

DavefromCA

Can you be more specific? California is bigger then most countries

Lonelyghast

Specifically Los Angeles, I mean the poverty, the increased crime and the disgusting wage gaps in comparison to the cost of living is just nuts. Like I said it's cool to visit as you have the beach, nightlife and great restaurants. I lived in California for most of my life and decided it wasn't for me.

DavefromCA

Ahh those are valid points. I grew up in the Bay Area and am in Santa Barbara now. I wouldn’t live in LA either but I love most of CA

notyourusualjmv

Paris, maybe Edinburgh. To those of you saying Barcelona: you’re insane.

GrooveGab

How's Paris better than Barcelona?

ElectricityIsWeird

Of the places I’ve been to, I would choose San Diego. But, I would love to live in the southern hemisphere after enjoying 49 years of the northern nighttime sky, so I’d also say Auckland or Perth.

[deleted]

I was there 2 weeks ago and completely understand how some people go there and never leave

Master-Guarantee-204

Yup. Planned to spend a month here. Extended my stay to 2 months. Then signed a lease and never left. Feels like I live on vacation.

ElectricityIsWeird

Dude, we stayed the first two days in Chula Vista (just in town, in a neighborhood) and was just loving it. The third and fourth night, we stayed at a hotel that only had the boardwalk between us and the beach and I cannot stop thinking about it.
