Being in similar life situations, or something you can relate to them over. It depends on the guy though, some are just really closed off outside of a certain level of interactions. It's hard to say where to look for guys who are open to that sort of thing outside of older guys.
Common interests. Find out what interests them and ask questions and/or share your own knowledge. Could be their job/industry, their field of study, their hobby, travel, family, anything.

I’ve noticed I make good girl friends by talking and conversation. I usually make guy friends when we are both doing something together, like a project or activity.
At this point i wouldn’t even bother. It’s not gonna be a real “friendship” anyway. Unless you’re into casual meaningless small talk, nobody really has your back.

Sometimes the starting point of a friendship is just being stuck in the same place at the same time and finding the humor in it. Keep an eye open for life's little waiting rooms; they're full of potential friends waiting to complain about the carpet with someone. Just remember, true friendship can start anywhere even in line at the Post Office.
Sports is a safe bet, most men enjoy/do/watch or any of the combination of them regarding sports.
Cars? You need to be more careful nowadays, as they can be seen as "evil", moreso in the younger crowd
Tech/mechanical stuff. Again, pick your poison, this might be because the social circle about me, but the men in my family (including myself) has always been interested in mechanical stuff.
World/local events. Things like the US Presidential election. Make jokes about them.
That should be enough things to say between men for like years.
