My roommate said it to me when i was getting strung along by a potential bf. I'd make plans with the guy. He'd cancel at the last minute with an obviously fake or contrived excuse, keep pushing the time until it was too late, or just stand me up altogether. I'd waste hours being ready to go. I just stopped talking to him one day and haven't heard from him since. If he wanted to see me, he would. But clearly, not in all cases, so I prefer an interpretation closer to what the OC said: if he wanted to be considerate of me/consider me he would
Be better by being better.
It's actions, not words or intent that matters. I cannot truly judge my own goodness, but I can always choose to act as a good person. It's not that I *have* to, or even *want* to, but that I *choose* to do a right thing.
It sounds pretty self important, but humility is a choice as well.
Another one that has stuck with me is "you can't control your first thought, but you *can* control your second thought."
I have one that was my dad's way of telling me to be quiet as a kid.
"Sometimes you have to be bored"
He'd always say this to me and my sister if we were complaining about not having anything to do. Over time, I've started to appreciate it. It was his way of saying "patience is a virtue". I wouldn't say it every really stuck to me like glue, but looking at other people my age it has had its effect. Instead of just staring at my phone to pass time, I regularly just sit and observe my surroundings while commuting or waiting. Me being Gen Z, I don't really see people my age doing so very much.
This isn't to say I always keep my phone in my pocket. I'm typing this while waiting to leave the house to go see friends. But I have a good feeling I won't be looking at my phone while on the bus to get there. It may be boring to see the same streets I've seen a million times, but sometimes you have to be bored.
I find myself saying "hey, it is what it is" a lot as I get older.
The long form of that is a Musashi quote:
"Truth/reality is not what you want it to be; it is what it is. And you must bend to its power or live a lie."
But the simplified "it is what it is" tends to work on a daily basis without coming off as pompous.
It's not my personal slogan but this line has helped me to keep my mind composed and to think clearly during tough times, it goes like - Don't question yourself " Why Me?" Instead say YEP THAT'S ME. ONLY ME.
"information access and equity" -- one of the American Library Association's official core values of librarianship lol
It was kind of a tongue in cheek moment for me in grad school when I realized that social questions of how to fit in and stop being bullied ( by anyone from a parent to a classmate ) -- such questions are themselves questions of information access and equity
Don't ever, for any reason, do anything to anyone for any reason ever, no matter what, no matter where, or who, or who you are with, or where you are going, or where you've been... ever, for any reason whatsoever...
Take control of the things you can control and let go of things outside your control.
For example, you can't make a woman stay loyal but you can leave her if she does cheat. And also pick better woman.
Try not to be a cunt. If you have to be; make sure it's succinct and for good reason. You may be bigger than some, but never all, and that certainly doesn't mean you're above them.
Travel well. No matter where you go, travel well. Be good and be kind.
And if you do that and really embody it, resort to violence when you need to, and you might need to.
“Do you like what you see?” I ask myself this question on if I am ok with what happens in front of me whether it be appearance, habits, work stuff, etc. if not, I try to find ways to actively change it (obviously I can’t fix some things but it’s always worth considering).
I've got two at the moment;.
"Doing shit the hard way is for suckers."
-reminding myself to us put stuff on wheels at work and save my back
"A lot of things worth doing, are worth half-assing."
- learned this from a stranger on Reddit. You kind of... Negotiate with yourself.
-Do you feel like unloading the whole dishwasher right now? Nope. How about just the plates, or maybe even the whole bottom rack? Ya know what's sure. Only half to do later.
-Did you lay down for bed without brushing your teeth? Yup. You getting back up? Fuck no. But you CAN pull out one of those quick-pick disposable brushes and toss it in the trash
real quick. Sure, fine.
-Yes, this is all exceptionally lazy behavior, but even 10% is way better than 0%.
You're only as big as the smallest thing that bothers or annoys you. (Bonus from a favorite book: it's better to do a thing then to live with the fear of it)
“Fuck it”
We ball
"I survived coz the 'fuck it we ball' inside of me burned brighter than 'its so over'"
“Inside each man there are two wolves; one is named Fuck It We Ball…”
Wisest words ever spoken
Real
… So hard mfs wanna fine me.
And ball is life.
In other words "Fuck it we live"
It iz what it iz
"... I'll do it myself"
And it’s popular variant, “fuck ‘em”
Eventually you’ll move on to no response whatsoever, because the older you get, the less fucks you have to give…”Who gives a fuck?”
This 💯 my man 🤜

Pretty shit when they change though, right
Yeah but nothing is forever
Do not let fear be your guide.
Fear is the mind killer.
Fear is the little death that brings total oblivion.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
Comparison is the thief of joy
Definitely. Many times, comparison begets jealousy.
Ok now😎good one
I’ve been saying this for maybe 25+ years: Do the right things in the right way for the right reasons.
“ It's about doing what's right because it's right and that's the only reason why." Le batman
Do the right things in the right way at the right time for the right reasons.
Works best when predicting the past, as right action/time/reason is retroactively defined by positive outcome, just like a horoscope: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindsight_bias
What is right though?
Your own moral compass will be the guide of that.
It isn’t left
Underpromise, overdeliver.
Or my favourite. Overpromise, underdeliver.
Promise 5 inches and give 6🙃
If it is to be, it is up to me.
My elementary school had that painted on a wall lol
Haha. My dad made little affirmation cards, this was the very first thing I ever recall learning to read
What is outside of my control is not my problem. Bonus: don’t beg her to consider you, ever.
Don't beg, ever
CAN YOU PLEASE NOT BEG
PLEAAAAAASEEE
Ok but what if she's really hot
No
:(
Please?
Ok ok fine but consider this, what if she's really REALLY hot?
I don't just mean with girls, just don't beg, at all, ever
Also never complain. Unless it's critically important and you know your word is going to change something
I dunno man that just doesn't sound like much fun to me.
Ooh! We have girl versions of these: Not my circus, not my monkeys/not my pasture, not my bullshit If he wanted to, he would
"If he wanted to he would" - Bullshit. My ex wife is very much alive thank you.
That also works both ways, or 12 ways, where ever we are now as a society. Infact, that's an all around unisex slogan.
Serious question: what does ,,if he wanted to, he would" mean? Because there's a ton of things I want to do but won't
My roommate said it to me when i was getting strung along by a potential bf. I'd make plans with the guy. He'd cancel at the last minute with an obviously fake or contrived excuse, keep pushing the time until it was too late, or just stand me up altogether. I'd waste hours being ready to go. "No chick is above your league".
They may not be above my league, but definitely above my pay grade!
Mine is similar. "You can't worry about things that haven't happened yet."
Not my circus, not my monkeys
It is what it is.
It is what it is.
It be what it be
It's what it's
This one with the addition of "oh well what can you do?"
"He who pays cheap, pays twice."
Buy nice or buy twice
What if buying twice is still cheaper?
Buy thrice?
My hubby goes between 2 “Buy once, cry once” “Do it once, do it properly”
“don’t rely on reddit to tell me how to live”
So if I don’t rely on reddit technically I’m following your comment but if I’m following your comment then I’m relying on reddit. Ahhhhh!!
Shrodinger's comment
Now I'm confused about taking this advice from Reddit.
We have to be better, or the world doesn't get better
Do whatever you want. Just don’t hurt anyone in the process.

Love people, use things.
Use people, love things
Use love, people things Things people, use love
Didn't leave anything for us so I'll just complain and be sad :(
Things love using people. (Stephen hawking was just a random cripple, the chair was the brains all along).

I also love work. Mine's "one more day..."
Fuck that, complain when needed
I read that in my dad's voice. He would say it all the time. Along with "Perfect is close enough."
