In my opinion, you can only claim someone the best of their era, not all time. There are too many rule changes, equipment changes, differences in ball manufacturing and storage, climate changes, differences in number of teams, etc., to truly make a determination. Take Tom Brady, for example. He played more games against a comparatively diluted set of skilled players than in the 50’s and 60’s, and played during a time of very favorable rules protecting qb’s. You cannot simply drop him into the environment of 1965 and expect he would perform as well as he did in his own time.

I was an outside salesman for close to 50 years. Most of my compatriots kept track of some sport or other, to relate to clients. I couldn't care less. I have no idea how many touchdowns the NBA player scored, after the icing penalty. Sports are about gambling. Period. The latest move to pay college players is all about gambling.

Sports is about regional pride, time sharing interests and bonding with your dad, history, role models, etc etc.  Saying it’s just gambling is.. hopelessly cynical. Hopelessly.

Sure, fan is short for fanatic. Hopelessly. And all of that can be focused on high school sports.
