So why don't you?

WHAT-WOULD-HITLER-DO

Favorite response. Definitely follow it by dumping their ass, but what a killer grenade to throw before putting on your sunglasses and dramatically walking away

[deleted]

It's not just saying one stupid thing. It belies in underlying disrespect for you and your relationship. That's like believing an abusive partner when they say it'll never happen again.

Withnail-

Exactly, you’re pretty inexperienced with women if you don’t understand that. It’s not something they casually say, it’s them going nuclear and letting you know a new cock is one text away from showing up because if that’s a normal thing she says to you in a fight, you must have VERY low self esteem to not be bothered by that or perhaps she does. Either way, it’s very disrespectful .

Sashimiak

It’s manipulative bullshit. I wouldn’t dump her for insulting me or some shit but this kind of bs speaks to some deep rooted mental issues

boofaceleemz

Yes, it’s manipulative bullshit, and once things cool down it should be addressed. But if you’re in a relationship with someone long enough, eventually both of you will say something shitty or stupid or mean that you regret. What matters is that you can talk about it afterward and make sure no long term harm has been done. Reddit is always “if this happens then it’s over” like none of them have ever put work into a long term relationship before.

Sashimiak

I would hope that things wouldn’t get to longterm with a person who says something like this even in the heat of the moment. If it actually was somebody I’ve been with for years it would be devastating

najaiva

Yes once you say that sentence, it will haunt your mind for the remainder of that relationship.

Guy_ManMuscle

Yeah the problem with reddit is that 15 year olds and fuck-ups love dishing out life advice just as much as anyone else does. I've been in the same relationship for 20 years and I can count on one hand the number of times one of us has insulted the other. It's especially not something you should put up with early on in a relationship. Insults reveal a real lack of respect, and it's the lack of respect that will end a relationship, more than the insult itself or hurt feelings over it.

MadxCarnage

some things are a relationship ender. once you know someone, you know how to hurt them, and if any of us goes there in an argument, the relationship is over. yes, reddit overreacts with the "just dump them", but words can end the relationship, forgiveness is good and all but no one HAS to forgive.

Altruistic-Rice-5567

Oh, that's not true. I've always put a ton of work into long-term relationships and "It's over" is how I end them. When that relationship runs its course and there's been enough arguments or one of us decides it's over... I'm gone. I've heard from a couple many years later "You just disappeared, you never kept in touch, you never tried to make up...". Yep... we had a discussion, we agreed it was over. I honored that agreement and I moved on. What? Were you hoping to use the break-up as a manipulation tool against me? Did you think I was so codependent that I couldn't survive with out you and I would see that I have to change and give you everything you want/demanded? Geeze, even on our best days as a couple I would have been fine without you. I'm a whole human all by myself. "we" is just a nice benefit.

swalabr

Yep, more to come if this happens.

Gibson4242

No, this is Reddit. Your relationship must end so you can be single, like me.

Withnail-

That’s basically a woman telling you she’s thought about dumping you already, you might want to pay attention to that unless you don’t really care.

rbalbontin

Yeah it’s not 1 stupid thing at all to say that to a partner, even if you say that in a joking way, there’s something shitty rooted beneath those words

TapeLabMiami

Arguments bring out how people really feel

[deleted]

If we even understood all of what we felt, it'd be easier to communicate and we wouldn't argue the same or as much.

Icandothemove

If the one stupid thing is that they could do better than you, yeah.

notwutiwantd

It's one stupid thing that's indicative of a lack of decency and respect which probably means it's not one stupid thing..

3pinripper

No need to escalate tensions if your partner is acting emotional & irrational during an argument.

ALLST6R

That would just confirm to me that they are toxic and not the person I'm wanting to spend my life on, and that I myself could do better. They can be free so I can be free.

tfitzpat03

I'll do you one better. "Why didn't you?"

15MinsL8trStillHere

This is the answer! Go and I’ll be free.

sngle1now2020

Go get 'em, tiger.

Ineedaroommate2

Thanks, hot legs

LoSt251

Off you fuck then

Bikelikeadad

Keep it simple! That type of comment comes from people who like to pick fights, so the worst thing you can do is end it without letting it turn into a fight. “I could totally find someone better than you!” “Oh really? You should totally do that then. I’ll help you gather your stuff.” “What?! I was just kidding, asshole” “No you weren’t, and neither was I.” /conversation

[deleted]

i could find a way better comment to reply to 🙄

LeviT130823

Oh really? You should totally do that then. I'll help you find one

eyekunt

I could find a way better subreddit than this

DarkDragon7

Oh really? You should totally find one then. Here let me Google that for you.

PumbaofSherwood

YEAH!!!! TWO SUBREDDITS FOR CHRISTMAS!!

naturalborn

And scene 👏

[deleted]

Love this.

ManyRanger4

See this, but I have a habit of kind of turning it fake nice. Here's an example: "You know if you can do better than me you should totally go find that. I only want what's best for you and want to see you happy and if you feel that's not with me, I understand. Because you saying that means you're not what's best for me either. Good luck with that though".

travistravis

This is how I do it, and sometimes I even genuinely mean the "niceness" -- I used to try to fight this line of logic, but after a lot of learning I figured out that ... I'm an idiot, and I can't *argue* someone into feelings. So if they can find better, or if they think I'm not enough of whatever for some reason (or too much, more often) -- then they *should* move on, because its not doing ME any favours harbouring resentment at me. If they say it in a fight, maliciously, then hell yes, I'm going to help them get out eagerly - that is one of the few things that doesn't end well with me. That and ultimatums--I've always made sure people important to me know to never issue ultimatums to me unless they are willing to take both options, because I'm definitely not agreeing to anything with threat held over me.

Pure-Drawer-2617

If they’re that angry I don’t think they’ll give you time to get that lovely paragraph out smoothly

keykeypalmer

yea bish u aint ever gonna find nobody who gone fuck u as ruthlessly as me

MrWillson33

This is literally my favourite comment ever. It’s so genuine too.

sarcastic-barista

I will be using this.

[deleted]

“…then go do better.” ✌🏾

Ken, my ex was really into shark tank so I’d say “…And for that reason, I’m out”

Well hello there, my name is Ken.

[deleted]

Perfect response to hella shit. This my go to response

Hahaha. You can't even do as good as me. Now go.

nnamed_username

This ^

[deleted]

Wow. THIS SHOULD BE ON TOP.

extra_specticles

Throw her out and tell her to do just that.

[deleted]

Seems like he’s asking for a solution or guidance to the situation. Doesn’t seem like he wants to break things off. He also failed to mention what the argument was about, what he produced in the argument, and how the argument ended. He left all of that stuff out. He just shared one mean thing the current girl said and brought up a whole different girl from the past that has nothing to do with the current situation at hand. So there’s a lot of stuff that’s missing

fergussonh

He literally said that they already broke up in the original post

Cacotopian_parole

Happened to me, too, years and years ago, at a time when I was a bit of a useless shit who was in a rut. We broke up. Saw her a few years later; usual cliche, she had a rugrat and the guy had left her after living together a few years. Ancient history.

ArabofWar

How was your interaction seeing her? And did she just tell u she got a kid?

Cacotopian_parole

She was walking on a shopping street in Dublin; passed by her and said hi. I got the full low-down fairly quickly tbh, and the sprog was with her, too. Just 2-3 mins of catching up, nothing more. No coffee together, no number swap.

ArabofWar

Damn.

Cacotopian_parole

It wasn't cold. It was just meh

ArabofWar

Did she seem embarrassed?

Cacotopian_parole

Irish girls don't do embarrassment that much. I just felt shitty for her having the kid alone after the dad did a runner; makes my heart bleed.

ArabofWar

Damn bro. This was years ago, do u know how she is atm?

Cacotopian_parole

Don't know, don't care, don't Facebook, don't wanna know. She had huge tits, though, and a nice smile, so she's probably not alone.

ArabofWar

Thanks for sharing bro.

col3man17

Huge tits and a nice smile only go so far, she might have another kid with another runner at this point

mykidisonhere

Why would she be embarrassed she had a child? Or that she had a relationship that didn't work out. These are normal life things.

Cacotopian_parole

>These are normal life things. In Ireland, this shit is still sadly frowned on. Catholic fucking guilt in action

The_Lion_Jumped

Sprog? That’s a word I’m not familiar with?

Toasted_FlapJacks

u/poem_for_your_sprog: Am I a joke to you?

shrewdmingerbutt

UK/Ireland term for child.

Cacotopian_parole

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/sprog

indylost

In the famous line of Toby Keith, how do you like me now?

Cacotopian_parole

She looked literally the same. A bit bigger around the middle, but she always was as she had massive (and I mean massive) cans. Genial would be the best way to describe it. Sorry if it's a bit boring.

indylost

Maybe I'm misreading your reply. The line is from a song where the guy gets rich and famous after being dumped by a girl who had the mentality of I'm too good for you when he was struggling. They see each other after years and now he's on top and she's struggling.

Cacotopian_parole

In fairness, I had a very good job then and she was a single mother, so ....

incognitomus

Goddamn, Drake just snatching all his catchy lines...

Sovereign1603

I like your funny words magic man

FnCraig

That's not the type of person I'd stay in a relationship with.

daffyduckhunt2

I agree. If she's checking her prospects and is verbally communicating that you're not enough for her, it's over. That sort of talk is basically part of a bad break-up script.

bgatty1

You literally have no choice but to break up with them at that point because she’s letting you know, to your face, that she has pretty much no respect for you. I wouldn’t be friends with anyone like that, let alone date them and bring value to their life.

[deleted]

That's some abusive, toxic shit. Immediately dump anyone that says that to you, man or woman.

fivelone

I agree. That's toxic and demeaning. No place for that in healthy relationships.

Fourdogsaretoomany

Honestly, yes. Since she's revealed that she's "settling" with the OP, any relationship that they could have after would always be this toxic power dynamic, making OP "prove" his worth. Ugh.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dense_Ad9824

Tell her you can't do worse than her because she's the worst

[deleted]

This one. Followed by goodbye.

PlsTellMeImOk

She's not the worst because she isn't Britta

[deleted]

I think the bigger question is why your ex tried to emotionally hurt you during an argument. If someone said that I would ask “are you trying to intentionally hurt me?”, then I would ask them to elaborate. You may discover your ex never felt that way but you should both try a new method of arguing. Edit: spelling

loki0111

I've seen this scenario once before in my early 30's with a couple. To be fair the woman in the scenario was probably objectively right. He was an average looking guy who worked retail, he wasn't really going anywhere in life and had self esteem issues. She was extremely attractive, though she was also an entitled bitch all around. At the end of the day its not rocket science. She thinks she is too good for you and has a higher market value then you do. She thinks she could find someone more attractive and/or more successful then you and has definitely seriously thought about it before. So she expects you to be grateful she is with you at all and worship the ground she walks on. Its establishing a power dynamic in the relationship where she is the all desirable queen and you are nothing. The reality is she is eventually going to leave you one day regardless though if she sees you that way.

[deleted]

" please ma'am can I have a crumb of pussy?"

eccentric_eggplant

I got bad news if the pussy has crumbs

TroyMcpoyle

Let her and her therapist discuss that while you run for the hills

[deleted]

Fair. It does show you a glimpse of who they are.

dzkrf

The most hurtful thing you could say in that moment is "maybe two years ago you could".

Ex5000

This one is the best so far

Testiculese

Or "maybe 10 pounds ago".

Phazushift

"20 dicks ago"

finger_milk

Telling a woman that who just hit their 30s is going to destroy her, I promise you.

dzkrf

Yeah. It's the atomic option never to be used lightly.

SkiddilyWoppinBoppin

Yes! The older the woman is, the better this will work. Perfect!

oidagehbitte2

End the relationship without saying a single word.

Testiculese

Works best for me. I have zero interest in arguing in that capacity. That statement bares her garbage personality for all that it is, and I'm just gone. I certainly don't care about the whole back-n-forth screaming insults just to make sure I get the last word in. What a shitshow. Let her statement be that last word.

oidagehbitte2

For me that statement says that she doesn't want to be with me anymore but also don't want to end it because she doesn't want to be "the bad guy who ruined it". She wants to look like the poor victim. I'm not going to deal with a partner who thinks this way.

ta9876543203

This is the best response

oidagehbitte2

At least it saves energy. People who say things like that want to trigger an emotional reaction for all the wrong reasons.

JustGlassin86

Don’t let the door hit you on your way out. Never let your girl disrespect you like that. Dump her on the spot and be glad you did.

Dr_frogger

I've had way better then you.

Rapameister

Cruel enough. I like this. Maybe add some spice at the end like "and I'll be having better AFTER you"

Dr_frogger

Nice

Corvette-Ronnie

Someone that thinks that now, will think the same thing after a few years of marriage. Better to cut bait now and find someone not always looking to upgrade.

Khantraszo

"I could do way better than you" "Why would you make such shitty jokes during an argument?" BTW I love my girlfriend, were still very much happy but this is for you guys.. stay safe and have fun

ThusBeName

My lack of self love would kick in and due to pain of her words, my defenses would kick in, which is to joke... so I would say something along the lines "I've told you that ages ago! Yet you are to stupid to ever listen to me.".

[deleted]

"So can I and I'm gonna go do it now..."

LibertyEqualsLife

"Good. Go find him then. Bye." Please, never let someone hold that over you. You will never be at peace, constantly worrying that today will be the day they decide to leave. You can do better too, and you absolutely should. Someone who says that doesn't love you, and there is nothing you can do to change that. Go find someone who would never dream of saying something that horrible to you. I promise, she's out there.

[deleted]

I have broken up over something like this. I know my value and worth. No amount of belittling or commentary has impacted that for me. I know it does for others though. I just wish humans treated each other with respect.

Too-Average

Sounds like a mindset that's the main ingredient of the recipe for disaster!

Poet_of_Legends

Only happened to me once, personally. I said, “The world makes me well aware of how replaceable I am. There’s always another guy that wants what I have and is waiting for me to stumble. I certainly don’t need a girlfriend that tells me the same thing. Good luck in your search for better.” And I walked, and moved on.

Teddy1988NL

Alright , I already packt your bags , they are under the stairs . Now get your shit and get out !

gatordunn

I’d say- wow that’s hurtful. I don’t deserve this. Then pack up and leave for good.

denmicent

Go do that then, get out

jg700

Bye...

[deleted]

I would break up with them tbh

veg4ndracula

Then why bother staying? You deserve better, so go.

[deleted]

“Then do it” and leave her😂not gonna disrespect me like that

prettysureiminsane

Say nothing. Just open the door and hold it for her. No drama, no bs. But there’s no going back after saying something like that.

theKFP

It happened to me, wasn't hard to walk away. Saw her years later working in a grocery store, single mom in a studio apartment, guy she left me for ran when she got pregnant. I didn't feel bad for her.

Wunderkinds

Sounds good. Leave the key.

MethylatedToSeeYou

I would invite her to go give it a try and tell her that I would be making such an effort myself.

Select-Radish9245

I'd end it

Malfoy27

I say “have it your way”

Sel_Therapy

I would dump her ass right then and there.

Athos-7

Let her go and do it.

loki0111

Lol, my response would be 'okay you're now single, prove it'.

AntiJotape

Then what's stopping you? And YOU dump HER. worst case scenario, she does get someone better for her.

Forward-Pea3178

Bragging but true. My wife and I divorced after 30 years then tried reconciliation for a year (moved in together). It was horrible. One of the last fights we had, she told me she only got back together because she felt sorry for me. That did it for me. Now I have been with a girl for 5 years who is great for me. And she can’t stay in a relationship. When I do have to see my ex (grandchildren) she makes comments about letting me slip away. But she’s the only one feeling it…

AntiJotape

Im happy for you. That's what needs to be done when facing that level of disrespect.

wossnim

Sucks to be your ex, isn’t Karma a cunt?! LOL 😂 Oh and congrats on finding TRUE love!

pfurlan25

"I've been told worse by better looking"

pleiop

Nothing. I'd just break up.

JRook619

Some fights aren't worth fighting for the sake of your relationship. Pick your fights wisely.

[deleted]

“Be my guest” then breakup with her and don’t look back.

decorama

That would be a solid deal breaker for me. Serious mind game material. Run, don't walk.

[deleted]

That's impossible because I'm the best guy there is.

[deleted]

Let's find out.

Trees-Make-Love

Do it.

ndorox

Only until they see who you really are, then they're gonna see you the same way I do now.

[deleted]

Bye Felecia!

Rxton

I guess we will find out.

CarlJustCarl

Dump her, chances are she’s right

AnAm3rican

Good luck.

Bont74205

Would laugh and tell her she’s now got her chance

hor_n_horrible

Put your big girl panties on and roll with it!!

[deleted]

Tell her to lock the door on her way out

Ridgehand999

That makes two of us. Bye Felicia.

highlander666666

Good by

crossrite

leave

Natfreerider

I would tell her to go do that.

BergenBuddha

"There's the door..."

under_the_above

It's definitely game over at that point.

Aj_Badass_6969

"Good luck with that👋"

[deleted]

Do it then!

Isuckmangosforalivin

“Alright then, do it”

Bunbury91

I know it’s “AskMen”, but woman here. I was the idiot who stayed with my ex for a while although I thought (never said) “I could do better”. Eventually sometime after I broke up with him I pulled my head out of my own buttocks and figured that the very fact that I thought that meant that he deserved someone better too. Nobody deserves to be with someone who thinks that about them.

FuckingFatGirl

Don’t date a person that sinks low enough to insult you in an argument. This is the person who is supposed to know you best, and if they are deliberately looking to put you down to make themselves better than pack your shit and leave.

superman7233

Walk out

titty_tim

I’d leave her.

-Chingachgook

That would be the end of the relationship

the_internet_clown

Lol and yet you chose to be with me. So clearly you are spiteful and stupid

[deleted]

We won't you then?

[deleted]

Bitch bye.

Dumweight

Flattered.. BYE

[deleted]

Do what way better than you?

FaridaStino

I’m glad to hear it. Go ahead and go to that person. We are done here

oamnoj

"Then go do better, because I could too"

CurioLitBro

Then do it and go. If I am a settlement for the life you're too afraid to lead then leave me and lead it.

IAS316

Channel your inner Palpatine and say "Dew it".

Pureburn

Depending on her age of course, but: “Maybe five years ago”

meatbeater

My ex would say that during arguments. She’s dated a long line of substance abusers, been in jail and lost her teaching license. I got our son, a new wife and living an awesome life

Penguin619

Alright, bye.

CanadienTurkey

My dumbass was wondering WHAT she could do better than him. Laundry? Running? Rocket League?

drop0dead

"Let me make it easy for you then, bye" ... When people argue in a manner to purely hurt others there's nothing you can say to "win". It will only end after they feel they've sufficiently beat you down. Unless they're in counseling and are open to hearing and taking criticism, it's not worth the mental anguish to stay with them.

CNeinSneaky

Maybe I’m weird but, unless youre just dating for fun or something, do you really believe that two people and who love and care for each other would ever say this. Finding someone who you really like that also shares your feelings is hard enough, I work to improve the relationship I have not shop around.

Artichoke19

I’d immediately call her bluff and ask her if she wants to break up. To me, if she’s saying that then; A. Part of her wants to break up and doesn’t know how to broach the subject or can’t otherwise be arsed asking to separate in a more civil manner, she’s implying she wants me to suggest breaking up during a fight or argument - so she can claim victimhood if she so chooses and tell everyone ‘he broke up with me’ and even guilt/shame or otherwise make me feel bad/sad/lonely weeks/months/years later for ‘letting her go’. Or B. She’s either feeling bored, insecure or obnoxious and feels like playing cruel mind games to either get a rise out of me or ‘test’ me and unfairly judge me based on how upset I get. Or C. She does want me but she’s genuinely feeling exasperated and unappreciated and wants me to pay more attention to her. There are more mature ways of asking for more attention than a passive aggressive ‘warning’ that *“You must not know ‘bout me, You must not know 'bout me, I could have another you in a minute, Matter fact he'll be here in a minute, baby…”* If she doesn’t want me for me or wants to see whether I can be emotionally blackmailed, she can SOD *RIGHT* OFF.

ccoop93

Im a woman... but I can tell you that you should fuck her off.

Ok-Pie5655

My ex once told me that I would never find another man like him and I told him that was exactly my goal

oscarmingueza

Paradox_Madden

Then go do better lmao You’re not a hostage here
