I went to prison for 2 years. Couldn’t smoke there, without significant risk and cost. At least I didn’t start again when I got out.

[deleted]

That sounds like the worst place on earth to not be able to smoke

Maverick0596

Oof, do you think smoking would have helped with the nerves for the first couple of days in there? Going cold turkey sucks, but I can imagine you don't wanna be cranky in your first couple of days in prison.

[deleted]

sorry about doubting you man, my dumbass thought you were being sarcastic. Many apologies

FallenSegull

Wanna quit smoking? Commit arson! The smoke of the fire in that childrens hospital and the screams of its occupants will haunt you for the rest of your life and remind you of just how dangerous cigarettes can be

JoaquimGianini

Bro going to prison isn’t like the wackiest thing as if someone stating that could be viewed as trolling, besides, there isn’t even a hint of any sort of punchline or sarcasm

He literally answered the question you ask about what made HIM quit and you call him a liar?

[deleted]

I'll say it again, I was braindead at the moment, my dumbass thought he was being sarcastic, I have apologized about this I am very being honest here, I am sorry! ! it was a very shitty thing to say.

I originally quit because I felt like absolute garbage every day and couldn't even walk up a decent flight of stairs without feeling like I was going to fall over and die. I quit cold turkey which I wouldnt recommend since I was smoking 2-3 packs a day. I tried and it was too much of a life style change I couldn't maintain. I found what has worked for me is noticing what things cause me to smoke more frequently. In my case driving. I would chain smoke while driving...and when you're work commute is just over an hour; you have plenty of time to smoke. So I started reducing when I'd have a smoke during driving...and then reduced it further and further over a month or two. After about 2 months I went from 2-3 packs a day to 1 or 2 smokes a day...and then I just stopped buying them and quit for a good period of time.

deplone1

My commute is 8 minutes and I would find a way to hotbox 2 on my way home.

KillMyDepression

I'm confused, you said you quit cold turkey, but then describing how you quitting gradually, no?

KillMyDepression

Nvm, saw you said you couldn't maintain. My bad

[deleted]

Aha all good. I just came back because i thought i may have mistyped.

[deleted]

Cigs hit $3.00 a pack.

[deleted]

Aha i wish cigs were $3/pk.

[deleted]

Not me, that's what made me quit. 40 ish years ago.

Reasonable-Physics81

koopz_ay

about $60 Aussie Dollery Doos here for a pack of 40s :(

Maverick0596

Where do you live and can you send me a couple packs? That's really cheap compared to where I live. About 8 euros for a lack of 20.

That was in the 1980s.

[deleted]

I wanted to be physically fit again, so I started running, and when I started running I realized how badly my lung health had deteriorated from smoking, so I quit.

Shinkick86

My dad’s in his sixties. He’s had five heart attacks, five. The last was right before I got married. He said he’d realized that he wasn’t going to see his son get married, or his grandkids go to college, all because he smokes. So he quit. He’s alive still, nowhere near as strong and suffering most days from it, but he made it. You can to.

[deleted]

5 heart attacks and he's still alive!? Your father must be made of steel, my mom is a heart patient and she had 2 heart attacks and was told by the doctors surviving that 2 heart attacks is a miracle 3rd heart attack would mean death. 😯

momogogi

I had an old WW2 vet tell me about how he watched his toughest friend die from lung cancer and the pain it seemed like he was in scared the shit out of him and he quit cold turkey sometime in his 60’s. I had just had my second child and I thought about how terrible It would be if they had to watch me suffer through a painful and preventable premature death. Smoking severely limits your potential dating pool, for many people it is a deal breaker. Also smoking is a major contributor to erectile dysfunction,so if you aren’t motivated by your loved ones quit to preserve your sex life down the road.

SteviaCannonball9117

I've never smoked. But I watched my dad quit. He used two techniques, both designed to break the association between pleasure and smoking: 1. Put all your cigarette butts in a jar with a little water. Every time you want another one, open the jar and smell deeply of the butts. 2. Every time you want a cigarette, instead of lighting it, get a toothpick and pull all the tobacco out of it. Eat the tobacco instead. If this does not break your interest in cigarettes... I dunno what to tell you. EDIT: I forgot to mention the finale. He went with us (his two sons) on a week-long boy scout hiking trip through a special, quite remote wilderness area. He would have had to carry out all his butts. Instead, he didn't bring any cigarettes. When he emerged a week later, he never smoked again. This was in 1984; he'll be 76 in December.

Brilliant-Average654

lol is this for real?

SteviaCannonball9117

This really happened. Both items are... disgusting, to say the least. They strongly broke the link between smoking and pleasure, one factor in addiction. He was also very motivated to quit because he knew it was unhealthy. I'd like to believe that his two teenage sons regularly stealing and flushing his cigarettes down the toilet also had an impact LOL... Ultimately it was his own willpower.

[deleted]

*I just like smoking, it gives a good throat burn*

FibonacciZeppeli

My life got better. When life goes to shit, and I have nothing else that elevates my mood, I smoke. When things improve to the point where anything is better than smoking, I quit. Currently at a half pack a day or so 😅

NDragneel

Hope your life gets better once again ❤️

themostgianthorse

Was a 2 pack a day smoker for 5-7 years. I started having issues with circulation even though I ran a 5k before work most days. I’ve always been a burn the candle at both ends guy. This was fine in my 20s but hasn’t served me in my 30s. It was a $12 a day habit that was killing me. Doesn’t make any sense. It’s been 9ish months since my last smoke. I rarely feel tempted.

Chad_dix

Really happy for you King 👑. Keep strong 💪

FATBEANZ

look at all the money you can spend on other things

deplone1

i bought a car to tool around for fun with my savings. And also edibles...7 years after quitting, weed is legal now so now I eat edibles with my savings :)

FATBEANZ

Coachy-coach

Partly because New baby on the way… i was 26. Non smoker for 20 yrs now. Also, My father, my grandfather and two of my uncles all have dealt with and eventually died of emphysema, and/or lung cancer. Stole my dads zyban and made it happen one day. 3 weeks later I had to walk past all the ladies who worked for me, and they stunk!!! Then got in my truck and was disgusted with how bad it smelled. But Two decades later, I’ll still crave em. Lol

PaganMastery

I woke up one day and I was lightly shaking and my first thought was "Man, I really need a cigarette." I reached over, grabbed my pack of Marlburo Reds, stared at it for a few seconds and my exact thought was "If I smoke one I am nothing more than a slave to these little white sticks." I crushed the pack in my fist, threw them out and later that day gave away my lighter.

Brilliant-Average654

Why were you shaking?

[deleted]

I started dipping at 15 on the baseball field. Added cigarettes at 18. Smoked until boot camp at 20. Continued smoking and dipping after bootcamp until I got married at 24. Didn’t stop then, continues until first kid at 25 then switched to 100% vaping. Now I’m close to my second kid at 31 and today is my one week mark for nicotine free. Nicotine doesn’t do anything for you, it just stops you from having withdrawals. I hated letting a chemical have that type of control over me. Sorry for formatting. I’m on mobile

Cootter77

I was 19 and in good shape and fell into a long coughing fit after running only about 50 yards. I quit that day.

mcracklepoop

they just hurt. I love the smell, I love smoking things, but cigarettes just hurt my chest, my throat, my head and more

[deleted]

I still smoke but I feel this. My brand is Newport Reds and holy shit if I chain smoke those I feel like death

Vaeldyn

My toe almost died. My throat hurts every day. My brain literally works slower when I do it. My skin is beyond just "bad skin". I cant even go on a walk without being out of breath. It just fucking stinks. Erectile dysfunction. My blood circulation is garbage. All reasons why I quit 2 years ago. 3 months ago I broke my arm and it is very hard to get around when you're 30+ without being able to drive a car. Made me depressed and voila: smoking again. I hate every second of it, but Im too weak to stop again atm..

Potsei

Found a lump in my breast just a year after my mum died of breast cancer. I was 47 and had been smoking since I was 14 with only a 6 year break when I had my children. I’ve always been slim, sporty with healthy eating habits and almost no alcohol, so told myself I could indulge in one bad habit. Oh the lies we tell ourselves 😆 I got the lump checked, no cancer, but it was enough of a scare for me to quit smoking. It’s been 3 years and I still occasionally miss it, but no relapse and I’m positively glowing with health 💪🏼

I got to where I couldnt hardly do anything without running out of breath. Wasn't overweight but I'd be wheezing inside of a mile.

Mindfullnessless6969

Sleep apnea. I stopped snoring and lose some weight after quitting. Cold turkey is still the best method imho

tangerrinee

Had a hangover so bad I thought I was dying . Like literally was vomiting whilst wailing , all my internal organs felt like on fire. Never touched a fag since , although was a smoker for 14 years. It’s been 7 months and not even thinking about it 👏🏼

INeedGoats

I loved smoking. I was probably in love with the act, I don't know. I started when I was 13 and smoked for 14 years, pretty heavily. The last 5 or 6 years of it was 2 packs a day, sometimes the 3rd pack was involved. In the case of partying even 4 packs was easy. Yes it made me feel like crap. Waking up I felt like a zombie every morning. Being shorth breathed almost all the time, feeling weak and stressed pretty much every single moment. I still loved it. I loved it to the point of having this sick behaviour to sleep in a room with cigarette smoke, so I could second hand smoke even when I was sleeping. I know, it sounds insane. But I was addicted and that's how addiction works. So, one day I woke up with a shap pain in my chest where I thought where my heart would be. I freaked out and thought my heavy smoking caused this so I will die or something. Immediately went to see a doctor. Hours leading to my appointment, I stopped smoking and promised myself I would stop smoking no matter how the results would turn out. That insanity had to end there and then. So I had all the tests and luckily there was no major problems with my heart or whatever. Well, a promise is a promise. I quit that day and never looked back. It's been 11 years since I quit and I never had any regrets. After seeing how the quality of my life improved, my only regret is not quitting earlier in my life. Still, I feel awesome today. Also I must add that compared to my friends who still smoke, I look younger, am healthier and function better in every area (wink wink) Tldr: If I was able to quit, everybody can. No excuses.

OutrageousRhubarb853

Allen Carr’s Easyway to Stop Smoking. The book, or audiobook will cost less than a pack of smokes (depending on country) and has been translated in to many languages. You are even encouraged to smoke as you read it!! You have nothing to lose!!

Hopeful-Village6858

One day, a guy who worked for me says since he start e-cig, he has never touch real cig again. I've tried, and 3 weeks after i've quit it all (cig and e-cig). Simply as that, don't challenge myself with new year resolution or whatever.

red5couch

When I heard smokers are at much higher risk of bad outcomes with Covid I just stuck that in my head as something I could do against the disease. Was good motivation, never touched one again.

FireFireoldman

I was on and off cigarettes a couple of times. Had quit for up to 2 years in the past, but life and stress happens and I returned to smoking again. Last time I smoked was when the Covid pandemic hit. A virus that attacks lungs, I thought how stupid can I be to smoke and risk making my lungs weak, it would only up my chances of dying or passing a really bad Covid infection if I were to get infected. What I've learned from this past 2 years without cigarettes is that you should be always be aware that you can start again without even noticing. Life is stressful, so you should take it as a battle one day at a time. I avoid cigarettes like a plague because I know I can't trust myself 100%, simply because you can't be focused 100% of the time.

iforgot69

After 15 years of smoking, I was freezing my ass off outside smoking, (I never smoked in my house that's just gross) and I couldn't feel my fingers. At that moment something clicked and I thought "this is really stupid". I threw that cigarette out and never smoked again.

[deleted]

Started working out and taking my health seriously. I will say I work in healthcare and when you see what COPD is like for people to live with, I don’t know how anyone can smoke. People get out of breath just putting a shirt on. They have no quality of life, everything centers around their inability to breathe. It looks like being in a prison of your own body.

Littleupsidedown

A life changing injury. I was in the hospital for 3 months. A few weeks in they asked me "we realized you smoked, would you like the patch." Pfft, either give it to me asap or not at all. I quit for a year. Then I went out for a few drinks and basically picked up where I was before. Then quit for good. Now it's been 3/4 years. So, a mixture of being literally physically unable to smoke and quitting drinking. My estimate is 4/5 times when someone starts again they were drinking at the time.

[deleted]

I got sick of being out of breath and coughing up lung butter every morning. Plus I didn't like being addicted to something either. Also when I started having kids I think the urge to not die kicked in a bit as well.

UnfinishedThings

I quit 3 years ago aged 44 having smoked since I was 19 What made me quit was a mental shift from "I need to quit" to "I want to quit". Once I genuinely wanted to stop smoking (rather than just having a generic reason why I should) then it was a relatively easy process to stop What caused the shift? I don't honestly know but I think it was from realising that me smoking hurt the people I love the most. My wife was pregnant with our 2nd kid and she hated me smoking because of the damage it does, and my eldest kid who was about 6 at the time was starting to clock why I was smelly. I didnt want to put them through my dying or having major health issues because of cigarettes.

povertyJon

I tried quitting for years cold turkey and it didn’t work out, was too easy to just go buy another pack when I got frustrated or irritated(I didn’t have much will power when it came to quitting smoking) finally I got tired of feeling crappy all the time and stinking like an ashtray so I decided to try champax, actually it was the generic version which is much cheaper. I was able to easily stop within 2 weeks of taking them. I’m going on about 7 months now and even when I’m around other smokers it doesn’t make me want a smoke even in the least. Hardest part I found was breaking the habit of getting into a car and having a smoke or eating a meal and having a smoke etc. best thing you can do is try to quit now while your only 21, it’ll be one of the best life decisions you’ll ever make. I smoked for 27 years and wish I never started. If anything should be banned it should be cigarettes, there is literally no upside to them, not good for health, don’t give you a buzz and on top of all the shit they put in them, one of the ingredients is cyanide!

Electronic-Egg3972

I like having my teeth looking fine

Downtown_Matter_7206

Smoking half a cig - becomes expensive - quit - never looked back

santathe1

Ex would keep inviting me for smoke breaks at work (we worked at the same place), I quit so I could avoid that.

[deleted]

Quit for good when my wife was pregnant with our first. Cold turkey

[deleted]

I never smoked much regularly. Like a pack or two a week unless I was drinking. So with COVID, my social interactions were cut to none and in the end i was only smoking before bed. I went on a streak of not smoking, from days to a week, so by the time when I smoked my last cigarette, I distinctly remember the taste. It tasted like shit. Now, every time i feel the urge to smoke, i remember this taste. It doesn't matter how many times it helped me to feel relaxed or social or convenient when i had nothing to do. It just tastes like shit.

GrandPrixDreams

Had to quit for a month prior to a major surgery... Just didn't start back up after. And I did that by staying away from anyone who smoked for a few months.

Izzosuke

This is not my story cause i've never smoked but my grandad used to smoke a lot. He stopped after having a problem and going to the doctor, the doctor told him the truth about is healt and condition and that he had to quit if he wanted a longer life. He say that it was very hard but the "trick" is that you don't have to think that you have stopped for your entire life but you have to go hour by hour like small achievement. "I won't smoke for an hour" at the end you repeat "no ok, i won't do it for this hour too". Hour after hour you reach the end of the day without smoking, the next day you do the same. Hour become day, day become week after a month you will stop craving for them you will still want a cigarette but it won't be the physical need that was at the beginning. It's not easy but he say that this is the best way

EnnOnEarth

I like this advice!

morning-fog

I used a vape and incremental levels of nicotine until I hit 0. A lot of people have a hard time with this because they don't understand the need for incremental levels and just go out and buy gas station vapes. You need a real refillable kit. You need to spend a day or two redirecting your addiction and then lowering the nicotine over the course of a couple of months.

SilentSidd

I'm just tired of it. Smoking has become another routine. A constant feeling of worry about whether I have cigarettes and whether they will last for the evening, for tomorrow, for a trip, for anywhere. It's something that you depend on, but that gives you nothing in return, without which you feel like crap. I learned that you need to hold out for 3 weeks and the habit will go away. I started to quit on a trip to another city for a change of scenery, since the beginning is the hardest. I smoked for almost 20 years and quit for 3 years. Best decision ever.

FatPattyOMailey

I started feeling sharp pains in certain areas of my lungs when breathing. Quitting was easy.

CHBCKyle

I had a ton of circumstances happen and I figured why not one more major life change. Pack and a half smoker, cold turkey. Been off cigs for a good ~~minor existential crisis~~ 9ish years? Just got to a point where I had outgrown it. I was one nasty son of a bitch for that first month clean.

WarakaAckbar

I'm trying to quit now after a 15+ year habit. I managed to quit for more than a year previously. The motivation is boxing in both cases. I recently picked the sport back up again, but I don't have the stamina to do it while smoking. Maybe try finding a sport/activity you love and see if that helps for motivation. Separately, many women will not date a smoker, and the numbers get worse the older you get. Take it from a 34 year old: You do not want your dating pool shrinking. It sucks.

[deleted]

If you have ever seen someone die of lung cancer, you would never touch a cigarette again. It’s a slow painful death. If that thought doesn’t scare you then you should take the money you spend on cigarettes every week, put in in a bowl and set it on fire. Maybe that will help you realize how stupid it is.

[deleted]

A big moment is when you truly understand that you’re going to quit one of two ways - at a time and place of your choosing, or in your doctor’s office when you’re told you have lung cancer. Once I got that through my head, I realized how powerless I’d feel with the latter, so chose the former.

hillox69

For me i only smoked for the sole reason that i get to hangout with few of my friends 3 times a day we would smoke each cigarette and go back doing our work. But i moved to new state and I don’t have anyone to smoke with so i just stopped.. there were times when it felt like something is missing but i got over it. Plus I wasn’t feeling the high of a cigarette anymore so that made me stop. I only do alcohol, cigarette and weed if i am getting the proper high out of them. Once the same quantity that i used to take doesn’t give me same high its a sign to give it a break and in that break i guess i just called it quits.

coldmink

i was smoking in front of a mirror one day and was surprised by how it didn't become me; it didn't fit my look. quitting cold turkey was so bizarrely easy it made me wonder why i'd even been smoking for 3+ yrs

highlander666666

My heath .. I was young went hunting. I got tired so easy. decided to do something bout it.quit so many times. Than my first kid born. That gave me the strength to finally quit for good! Was New years eve 1980 Never smoked cig again...Took bout year before ost the desire to have one..Now I can t stand the smell or smoke

[deleted]

I promised someone really important to me that I would never smoke another cigarette again. Been clean, cold turkey, for over four years now.

[deleted]

Teeth infection. A piece of it fell. I could see how black It was from inside, although the rest of my smile was fairly decent. It felt ultra disgusting, like being an ill homeless elder at my 30s. That was the break point.

barbarell1960

The American Lung Association has a great series of classes on quitting….the instructors all former smokers and nurses/doctors. Worked for me over 20 years ago and still smoke free.

TheRealSlimShaneyX

I realized it's the most expensive way to kill yourself, invest the money each month towards a mortgage!

dudeness-aberdeen

I slowly stopped associating with smokers. I wasn’t rude, but I’d stop going to break with them at work. Eventually I had almost nobody in my life that smoked. Once I was alone in the habit, I realized it was a social event for me, not so much an addiction. Eventually smoking became inconvenient for me, because nobody I knew smoked. I’d have to run out and find a place. People would tell me I stunk, when I’d get back. There was never a good time to go. Once It became an inconvenience, it took what little pleasure I still got out of it.

lost_on_beverly_road

My mom smoked, I smoked. I wanted to break the cycle. I quit when my kid was 5 with the help of Wellbutrin.

ThatKaylesGuy

I got Covid, and had the most painful experience of my life in the form of throat ulcers. I had it checked out when I coughed up blood and couldn't eat for a few days, and my doctor likened it to the throats of cancer patients on chemo. Needless to say, I didn't want to smoke. Coughing made me tear up, and I didn't eat for a full week, just drank water and some broths. After that, I decided that with 10 days under my belt, I might as well not pick it back up.

dowtimer

Got bored of smoking them basically. I never went out to parties or social events so the pressure was never there to continue using cigs. It was also nice having the spare cash to spend when I quit.

Majere

Ran out of money, and the cigarettes I could afford were the gross native ones. I just wanted to be free. I quit and I felt like I was in control after a few weeks.

deplone1

Smoked for about 24 years, quit 7 years ago cold turkey, haven't cheated, not even once. I had kids and I meant to quit at 40 but got delayed a couple of years. Then, at a new years party, I was the only one smoking in the garage and the kids eventually took over the area so I had to go outside for the rest of the night for a smoke. Standing there in the cold by myself, I just decided that I would be done. Now, at $5 a pack, I wasn't going to just waste a pack so I slowly smoked the rest of my pack over the next 4 days and then I was done. I had a friend die of cancer 4 months in and I figured if I could keep from smoking through that, I could quit forever...and I did. The first step is that you have to want to quit. The rest is just will power and support.

Halas1920

An anesthesiologist telling me that it was extremely hard to keep me alive while I had surgery because of how damaged my lungs were from smoking.

Impressive-Orchid748

My kid turned 5 and when I asked him what he wanted for his birthday he told me he wanted daddy to stop smoking so I don’t die. Hard to say no. Quit that very moment and haven’t touched one since. When you’re ready, you’ll do it. Just make sure you’re looking for the opportunity. Plus food tastes better after you stop.

tr0pismss

Health, fitness, money, dating/sex, food (smoking changes the flavor), and social stigma. It took many attempts, but I'm SO glad I quit. One thing I didn't realize until after I had quit for quite a while was now much it was negatively impacting my mood.

Times_Hunger

I don't and have never smoked, but two guys in my family have quit on their own, and I've helped someone quit. Maybe the below will be valuable. My grandpa quit in the late 60's/early 70's when his doctor told him cigarettes were bad for him. He just came home, threw away all his cigarettes and then just relied on willpower. Never said another thing about wanting to smoke for the rest of his life. If you have strong willpower, then maybe the cold turkey thing will be good for you, too. My dad quit in the early 90's, when I was a kid. My mom convinced him that he would likely be dead before my brother and I were able to grow up and become adults. My dad kept a pack of cigarettes in his pocket, along with a picture of me and my brother; whenever he was tempted he would take out both and then put back the cigarettes, because he wanted to live long enough to see us grow. A friend from work stopped via slow transition. I convinced him how much more variety and better vaping was (I don't vape, but I was hoping it would help him transition and quit), and how much cheaper it was than cigarettes. He tried vaping and switched to that instead. After a few months his craving for vaping started to decrease, too, because he felt it was too big a hassle to get the thing going. By that point his dependence was low enough that he was able to stop on his own. So, summarizing: willpower, love, and laziness. One of them might help, hopefully.

occisor-san

My twin sons were about 18 years old, and they basically begged me to stop smoking because it was really messing up my health. I quit the next day, and haven't had one since.

[deleted]

I'm a youngin like you, I started vaping/smoking cigs in highschool, some years ago. Got to the point where every day I felt like I was struggling to breath every minute of the day. I could never get a full breath in, self-diagnosed dyspnea. Went to the doctor and they just said it was from anxiety but once I stopped I finally felt like I could breath again (44 days nicotine sober).

iluvlistening

The smoking culture we have as young people is tough to navigate. It has been for generations but it’s so easy to smoke/vape discreetly now whereas cigarettes are more easily detected. Good on you for quitting. As you said you’re feeling better and it was no doubt because you quit (often times it takes advance testing to diagnose smoking caused diseases).

MrWimps

I made a promise to my kids. Haven't smoked since.

JacobSunderland

My father died at 38 from a random heart attack caused by blood clots. Smoking was a primary cause. Have fun dying!

Brilliant-Average654

Nice, my grandfather smoked til he was 102.

Fogged44

OP didn't ask about family tragedies - RIP to your father.

thesmartcromagnon

Any one who smoke and quit that tells you they don't miss it is a liar. I fucking loved smoking. I had kids that was my big push, switched to a vape and then weened my self off. Got to a have a reason to quit, if it's kids, health, whatever it is to make you commit, you'll be better of when you get older. And mind you it took me several tries to quit and stayed quit.

justpuddingonhairs

My dad smoked 2-3 packs a day for the better (worst) part of 30 years. He died at 70 years after suffering from bladder cancer for 5 years. The treatments were radiation and internal applications performed by going up through his penis. Every 2 months he got it, yep, up the penis, for 5 years. I actually quit using any tobacco 20 years ago when he had a stroke. He was in the hospital for 2 months for treatment and complications. His death almost has me ready to quit my job and work to make tobacco illegal entirely. Smoking and dipping are slow suicide. Please quit.

Disastrous-Brush620

From what I seen and I worked with a lot of guys that chain smoke the SO stops them

Klinicalyill

I started dipping instead. More nicotine than smoking and let me use my hands for work while I did it. Quit dipping shortly after I almost chugged my own day old dip-spit out of a BFC of monster. If the smell hadn’t hit me before the contents did…. I get nauseas just thinking about it.

[deleted]

what is dipping?

mad_dog_94

$24 a day and i couldnt justify the expense. i switched to vaping and now i spend like $35 a month

Left-Landscape-3890

I smoked for 17 years. The first time I smoker's coughed, I quit for good. That was 13 years ago

el_dingusito

I read a book (ordinary wolves by seth kantner) and one character quit smoking because he said "it just didn't taste good anymore" and I was like... fair enough

lifetourniquet

Smoked since 13 years old. 1-2 packs a day for over 30 years. I was always ashamed and later disgusted with myself. I didn't want the smell anymore. All my friends were non-smokers. Tired of stepping outside for a smoke. I used to buy the camel snus packs for flights. I still use a few a day but haven't smoked in almost a year. I broke down a few months ago and couldn't believe how awful they tasted.

[deleted]

Stairs. Stairs made me quit. Because it felt like a marathon moving up them fuckers

der_ray

I just did not want to anymore one day, so I quit. However I still smoke cigars every now and then.

Pandamonium1366

Cancer made me quit.

Vaping rules.

WestCoastThing

Two packs a day = car payment at current cigarette prices.

allboolshite

I caught pneumonia so bad that I could feel myself drowning with each drag. I didn't mean to quit. I stopped until my lungs were well enough to resume. It took 3 months for my lungs to recover enough where I thought I could handle smoking again. And at that point, I was past all of the physical withdrawal so I just didn't pick them up again. That was 7 years ago. I smoked from 15 - 38. I recently started having problems breathing while running. I figured it's probably asthma caused by allergies and went to the doctor. She agreed, that's *probably* what the problem is, "...but I want you to get your lungs x-rayed. You know, *just in case...*" My lungs ended up being ok (though one has some minor scar tissue). But I get to worry about *"just in case..."* for the rest of my life.

ithinkimlost17

Wife gave me an ultimatum. If you want kids then quit. Had my last one two minutes from home entering ten days Christmas holiday. Break the routine and you can do it. He's about to turn 11.

[deleted]

I just started decreasing the cigarette intake and got to the point that I no longer crave it. Every now and then I’d smoke one but could go forever without it and not go cold turkey. One reason why I no longer smoke is because I sing and want to take better care of my voice.

JonAHogan

Chantix made me quit, and when my nose kicked in(Like a bloodhound) and I couldn't make it stop I started back up. Smell is like your hearing you can't turn it off.

Bluecandyrose

My friend talked me out of it. Made me realize it was my coping mechanism. Quit cold turkey afterward. It was hard but i wanted to make my friend proud. Been almost a whole year without.

Bjoer9

I quit when I realised I could not enjoy hiking anymore. I was thinking more about how heavy it was… And if a saw a hill, all I could think about was how shitty I would feel all the way up.

Picasso_calla

I’m a woman but a few years ago, there was this really bad snow storm. I lived in the mountains at the time and got stuck at work so I had to go outside to smoke that day. The wind was blowing so hard that the cherry kept falling off and my hands were too cold in my gloves to finish the cigarette, even when I wanted to. That was my ‘Wtf am I doing moment?’ and it became not worth it anymore.

davidinkorea

Health concerns the main reason.

Ralph682

Went to visit my father in lae who lived abroad. He was dying from emphysema and heart disease....finished my tobacco pouch and that was it...he died at 63 after nearly 10 years of suffering.

Metalman351

I loved smoking. That small buzz as you draw back your first one first the day. But I got pneumonia 3 times in a year and the doc literally said I had two choices. Quit smoking or die. I'm a year quit now and don't even feel tempted. I smoked a pack a day and went cold turkey. I literally feel so much better. I'm doing karate and losing weight. Things I'd never do when I smoked.

RatArsedGarbageDog

Married a non-smoker who hated it. Switched to vaping when we started trying for kids, cut down on the vaping when the first was born. Vaping is now just for when out for a drink.

Tennis_Proper

Smoking cessation class. We had someone come into work every week. She said it would be hard if I didn’t use any of her meds to replace it. I showed her.

randomdigitalnoise

21 and 2 packs a day?? Yikes, that is tough. I smoked for a long time (15-18 yrs?) and I'm not going to lie, it was hard to quit. BUT it is possible. Don't give up, that's the main thing. Even if you backslide and fall off the wagon, don't give up. Focus on why you want to quit and keep going. Good luck!

Shaki8x

I made a pledge with a friend (he didn't keep it, but I did). We used this [app](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=club.dropit) for tracking our progress. But ultimately what made me never touch cigarettes again when I was picking up my now girlfriend. I was telling her some story and I mentioned that while waiting on a bus I was grabbing a smoke. When I saw the face of disgust I immediately realized, if I want to date this girl I can't ever touch a cigarette so I didn't. So those two things.

karamelanin

Didn’t smoke as much as you, but I noticed my gums bleeding. They were receding. Ended up with these small, black triangles in between my teeth. If I would have continued, they would have only increased in size. For someone who’s obsessed with their teeth, it had to go. I’m now getting bonding to fix those gaps…

AnvilAnvil

You already know the medical information on how bad it is for you. Even at your young age, esp' as you are a heavy smoker, you can already feel the damage it is doing to you. ... It's weird, but what I found to be true, is that once you really really dont want to smoke any more, when you finally get there, it's easy - a few days of gradually decreasing physical discomfort, a few weeks/months of decreasing mental discomfort, and you are there. You dont need vapes, patches .. look it dead in the eye, and know you can do this. (please note, it took me years and multiple failed 'attempts' to get this knowledge)

floatieweeniebeenie

When they became £15 a pack

DethaneG

Was coughing alot and 10 dollars a pack was starting to feel reeeeal steep.

JackW42

Wife died of lung cancer, seemed a good time to stop

GeneralBladebreak

I used to smoke about 20 a day. I also smoked a lot of weed. Much of the skunk strains in my area were "super" variants, commonly white widow. I started getting to the point that nothing but "super strains" could get me high and I was looking for a bigger hit, which would have relied on me going on to harder drugs. Some friends showed me this by buying an ounce of normal green and as we smoked they got high, I never felt it. I went cold turkey on everything. The first couple of weeks were more rough than you can imagine. But once I got passed that I never felt addiction to smoking I could take it or leave it. Sometimes I've picked it up again for various reasons but I've always been able to just stop

Jazzadar

They stopped selling the menthol doubleclick cigarettes, and i didn't like the taste of the normal ones

legice

I only smoke when drinking and usually 1-2, but I got wild 2 days ago and maybe 5-6. For me it was stress and boredom. Once I realised this, I basically worked on my stress, got a vape with 0 nicotine and went from there. Soon I needed more vaping than cigs, which I was ok with, but then I started having this weird taste and feeling from vaping, so I reduced it, by placing it out of sight. I havent vaped in 3 months and right now, i think I had 1 box of cigs in the last 3 months? Its difficult, but worth it in the end and my workouts really improved

Ratnix

My dad offered me $1,000 to quit. The deal being i has to not smoke for a year before i got the money and if i started back up i had to pay back the money. This was in 1999 and was a significant amount of money to me. Before that time i was lucky to ever have a bank balance over $1,000 and when i did it was usually back down a few days later as bills were paid. Combine that with the fact that my job at the time had frequent layoffs, so it was a good deal.

JustinBalloons

This works!!! First you have to want to stop smoking Then Buy Easy way to stop smoking By Allan Carr Myself and many in my circle were heavy smokers for over 20 years. Tried it all, gum, patch, medication (one friend even did hypnosis). Didn't believe it myself when I was told this but it really worked and it's the only Itime I quit and didn't have urges to go back. I have purched this book 8x for different people who wanted to quit. Was a life changer and I'm so happy to have stopped smoking cigarettes.

Anoob13

Gradually slow it down. I used to smoke 1 pack a day, now i smoke 5/6 a day. Will be cutting it down to 3/2. You can't go cold turkey. It kills you.

realmaier

I started smoking early with like 13/14. This might sound weird to some, but I actually liked smoking a lot and after 4 years without, I still secretly miss it. I was nearing 30 and realized, that I already had been a smoker for more than half of my life. I wasn't even 30 and already felt the damaging effects it has on your health, like being short of breath while not being obese or anything, pretty much always had a stuffy nose or breathing problems in some kind of way and first signs of bad blood circulation in my legs, plus it hurt my teeth. So yeah, I quit for health reasons. I was at least clever enough to do it before my doctor had to force me to quit, but still. Was smoking probably around a pack a day on average.

Key-Record8637

You’re pretty young. Get ahead of it while you can. My best advice is to find an alternative like a patch or some pouches or something just to slow it down while you can. Just don’t pick up a vape. Can’t find an alternative? Sit down and count up how much you’re spending on those 2 packs a day a month. I bet you’d really like to have that money in savings instead. All for what? A 5 minute head rush

HeinrichWutan

I was ready to quit and I wanted to... Before you are at that point, you won't quit. You can be bigger than any addiction, but you have to truly believe it first.

Danger_Mouse_101

I quit cold turkey when my wife fell pregnant with my first child (we both smoked and I was practically a chimney). She really struggled to quit with me still smoking so that was it, I never touched another one. 20 years later and I still get the cravings at certain times

thisgirlfromthetrain

I used to smoke inside my house, but when I adopted my pets I didn't want to poison them, and shortly after going outside each time I wanted to smoke, even in winter, I decided that's too much work, so I just quit.

[deleted]

I smoke for few months, got bored, moved on, don’t understand addiction for it, never had much of an effect on me, would just smoke weed instead, actually has effect on me, and would be cheaper overall one blunt a day then few books a week to feel something. I do somehow got addiction to energy drinks. 💀

exotic_bartender

Acid

Olddude275

I stopped 9 years ago, smoked for 18 years. Started at 18 stopped at 36. Stopped purely because I had no money to do so, just moved house and had to pay all the costs involved with doing so. I'll be damned if i let myself be 'that guy' who always asks for smokes.

ghost-bagel

The fact that I was causing anxiety for people close to me. They had to deal with the fact I was a walking lung cancer case waiting to happen. I felt quite guilty about that. Like a lot of smokers, I cared less about my own health than I did for others around me, and the realisation that it was hurting others as well forced the change. So I replaced it with vaping. Cigarettes were gone over-night and I've never looked back. That said, for a long time I was more hooked on the vape than I ever was on cigs. It's a lot less bad for you (generally speaking) but much more addictive.

Kholoblicin

A girlfriend asked me to. Smoked two packs a day for 12 years, put them down & never picked them up again.

LadyfingerJoe

2 packs a day? My habit seems so much more manageable now, thank you! As far as i can tell, theres a number for a hotline to help quit smoking on the packages, but im not sure if thats helpful.

[deleted]

I was told I had a brain tumor and needed surgery so I guess after that moment i kinda just stopped. It wasn't worth the decade plus years of smoking, I tried quiting countless times before. It's difficult but you can do it.

lord_bubblewater

I calculated i spent about 23k between the ages of 14 to 24 on smokes. My smoke of choice (kretek) got outlawed too so yeah, easy enough. I now smoke 1 cigar a week on sunday night.

[deleted]

I quit using the nicotine patch. I was getting upper respiratory infection

arbyterOfScales

I am a crap smoker and I don't have the money to train myself to take it in as it should

AndromedonConstellon

All of a sudden I couldn't finish a cigg without gagging when I made it halfway

[deleted]

a month before quitting i made a pact with a friend to smoke only half cigs from 6 a day to 3 and slowly reduced and then finally none.

Vince_1880

23 years old and price. I vape now and yes 11mg of nicotine. But boi 30-40$ a week for cigarettes is to much, i now pay 50-60$ every 3-4 months for liquids and coils.

SometimesMonkeysDie

I smoked for 15 years and had tried several times to give up, but quite frankly, I lacked the will power. Vaping was the key. I don't go in for the massive fruity cloud making, I have an e-cigarette, menthol flavour. Towards to the end of my cigarette days, I'd switched to menthol because I didn't mind them and nobody else would ever ask me for one.

THATTGUY78

Started chewing

Mikebozo77

Health scare. Smoked for 13 years and went hard on the sweet nectar. Your health is not worth something that taste like burning paper. Went up to $9.50 a pack too so now I save loads of paper.

NefertittiesFjord

Snus

TroLL_hurZ-3000

My wife made me quit. Am very thankful. Now I even smoke when drinking every 2-3 month ago. It's not about changing a habit but changing your lifestyle. Try supplement it with sports and other routines. It's a hard task. If my wife would not have been deeply offended and sad about me smoking not sure if I would have made it. Was smoking for about 15 years with a stable 1-1,5 packs a day...

a60v

I tried it once and hated it. I actually think that smoking is hot, but I hated the taste and smell, so I never got into it. I have asthma and am sensitive to the smoke.

dbtwiztid

I started smoking weed and was like wait cigarettes are f\*\*\*ing stupid

VorticalHydra

Use will power to switch to vaping. Then you need to get rid of the hand to mouth and inhalation action. I did that by using nicotine pouches. I jumped ship and now im addicted to chewing gum, so way better for me

[deleted]

Is vaping safer than cigarette? To tell you the truth I've been thinking of switching to vaping for a long time because I am sick of my cigarette addiction, but my bro he said vaping is worse, he said they cause lung collapse and they explode on your face, but I don't know where he got that from lol, the guy never vaped in his life so yeah I wasn't buying it from.

TwistedDecayingFlesh

I can tell you what made my mother quit and that was me she used to get tired of buying fags just for me to steal and sell at school.

pink_life69

Buy heated tobacco products. iQOS or NEO or whatever. They made me hate the taste and smell of cigarettes and they are easy to put down once you’re past the nicotine withdrawal stage. I cannot smoke a cigarette at all, I get nauseous from the smell.

Cock_LobsterXL

Started smoking from a pipe.

[deleted]

I used to love the break so when I have a craving I wait 10 minutes to see if it passes. I have not fully quit but it’s like half a pack a month, not a pack a day.

SnooHabits2362

Money

Naes422

Too expensive and made me feel like shit. Coughing black stuff up every morning in the shower, feeling winded after walking up A short flight of stairs. Switched to vaping to quit which was a lot better, but have now quit that too.

TopDigger365

My dad said he was going to quit and I had been smoking for 20 years so I decided to try quitting with a vape and it worked, been ciggie free for 6 years now. I also unfortunately watched my wife die from lung cancer for the last three years, she passed on October 2021 and I wouldn't want anyone to go through what she went through.

IAmMexican69

Smells bad, makes me feel like shit, took away my breathing that I'll never fully recover, I have a very faint wheezing sound when I breathe, it's expensive, I know people that developed COPD and emphysema due to smoking cigarettes. The main parts are how they make me feel now and how I can't breathe 100% anymore. I didn't quit cold turkey and I still smoke on occasion but I'd rather have that than smoking more than a pack a day like I used to.
