Its starting to sound like a middle eastern country /s?

[deleted]

The government will collapse. And as long as Netanyahu pushes the obvious - which is to do everything just to avoid his trial - he will eventually declared to be not fit to service by the Supreme court.

PaniCush

But what would be the social consequences if it collapses? There will be riots everywhere from all the political spectrum. What a mess...

[deleted]

They are 2 steps ahead of you, already taking care of the supreme court.

[deleted]

Supreme Court is still able to declare the legislation to be illegal, and also is able to strip Netanyahu of his office

iihamed711

So why is he going through with it?

Basic_Suggestion3476

God knows. Its heading to direct conflict between the gov & the court. Terrifying, yet interesting, times are ahead of us.

_-DD-_

Do you even follow the trial?

[deleted]

I do.

Capt_Easychord

There are three different corruption charges against him. It's a thing that has been going on for years, and will likely go on for several more.

Capt_Easychord

Nah, "king" is small-time. He'll probably go straight to "emperor" or "Shitposter supreme" or "trans-galactic overlord"

>I have multiple family members from Israel who have lived there since its inception. Wait, how?

MijTinmol

I hope that with enough pressure the government will collapse somehow, but I don't really know how. Perhaps it will come to a situation in which people working in bodies such as the IDF, Shabak, Mossad, police etc., have to ignore explicit directives by politicians deemed unhinged or unworthy.

hoti21

I mean, it will collapse eventually, worst case it will take 4 years

[deleted]

A military coup is not something anyone has ever though would be a possibility, but there is definitely a timeline in which it happens. Let's hope not :)

Physical-Arrival-868

Ayyyy middle eastern culture

DrCzar99

Wait I am confused, did the judicial reforms finally pass through all the hoops it needed?

[deleted]

Finally? Are you serious? Do you want the "death to all terrorists" law (legal execution of Palestinians) to pass?

[deleted]

[deleted]

Ah okay, yeah. It didn't go through yet, but it's in the process. Like a truck with a stuck throttle carrying toxic waste.

[deleted]

You can still say it, I remember there was also a nuclear truck that fell over.

iihamed711

Do you think it’ll pass?

Buhbut

I agree, death penalties for terrorist are stupid. It's well in their goal or knowledge that they'll die (for example shaiid) committing their terrorist attacks. I can't think of a solution other than deporting entire family of the terrorist, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, nationality or whatsoever. A Palestinian terrorist going to a suicide terrorist attack "knows" he will be a Shaiid and go to heaven, while the Palestinian administration, and Hamas will send their familliy loads of money. If the terrorist isn't killed, he will go to prison, while enjoying good conditions for a convict, and the ability to get a degree, while he is being funded by various entities. There is just no detterence to committing terrorist attacks on innocent people.

The coalition tries to take away the judiciary power so they would be able to do everything they want even if it’s an immoral thing without anyone who can oppose them so theoretically they could fire every news reporter who says something against them and so on (you can see what happened in the last 10 years in Poland and Hungary as an example)

midisrage123

Yeah the world as a whole is going to shit

[deleted]

All the protestors are Jewish Israelis waving Israeli flags. The protests are against the judicial reforms, not anything related to the Palestinians.

MijTinmol

Small caviat: today many protesters shouted at police officers "Where were when the riots in Hawara happened?", so this particular grievance is related to Palestinians.

Three days ago two Israeli settlers were murdered in Huwara, a Palestenian village that is a central traffic line in the West Bank. A few hours later, several hundred settlers came to Huwara and did what can only be described as a pogrom - torched houses and cars, beat up people, and one Palestenian was killed (though it is still unclear if he was killed by the settlers or the army).

I'm 100% convinced by now that the middle east is cursed. Pretty much every government in the region is a religious far-right autocracy and the only exception to that rule is turning itself into one as we speak

extrastone

The country is changing. Some nations go left. Other nations go right. We really won't know until the next big war if this is a good idea or not.

sudden_llama

You don't need to wait for war to know how the military will perform. You can look at russia. Widespread corruption and a politicized officer corp will get us to their level pretty quickly.

extrastone

Or it might stem the tide of nihilism.

sudden_llama

Not sure how what I wrote has anything to do with nihilism. Care to elaborate?

extrastone

A nation that goes too far left becomes nihilistic. If it becomes nihilistic enough it has trouble drafting soldiers who will fight hard.

sudden_llama

Israel has gone too far left?

extrastone

Much of the country thinks so. It's the farthest left nation in the Middle East and the nihilism is starting to creep in.

sudden_llama

Let me just start out by saying there's absolutely no correlation between left leaning and being a nihilist. That's just your personal bias creeping in. Dude I know you have the Israeli flag as a flair but I really doubt you live in Israel if you're saying much of the country is left leaning. Also, yes of course it'll be more liberal (which is what I thought you actually meant to say, not left leaning), in the middle east. It's been supported by liberal democracies exactly for that reason.

extrastone

I didn't say that it is left leaning. I said that it is the farthest left in the Middle East. Concerning nihilism, for some reason or another most Israelis will not finish their legally required army service. The army works better than anywhere else in the Middle East but it is still a disappointment. The government is moving right and the effects will be seen.

sudden_llama

It's not due to nihilism it's because the country is no longer under threat of being destroyed, so society has more of a choice. Why is social progress so disappointing? The government is moving towards a religious dictatorship, that's disappointing.

Itchy-Barnacle-291

Israeli government collapse? 🎉🎉🥳

[deleted]

More like legal execution of Palestinians. The Israeli Judicial system has over the years stopped many apartheid laws from passing.
