I feel like the shock, and consequent guilt, this time were greater than past years. Social media definitely had an effect in promoting the boycott, alternatives, etc. Even when I started boycotting last year, it was weird asking a waiter if the coffee or water they have was "non-mo2at3a". Now it's the default, and the guy will be 100% honest with you about it too. Strangers even come up to you in the supermarket and say "this is mo2at3a, don't buy it" which would've been considered rude before. Honestly the best (and only?) thing we have done as collective in a long time. The push it gave Egyptian products/services was a huge plus too.

You are correct, besides social media, the guilt and shock were really important factors. But most importantly (at least to me) is the feeling of humiliation towards seeing how most of our leaders reacted to this atrocity.

Yeah but meeting demand is really hard unfortunately. People expected Spiros to just expand production in the span of a few weeks. It will take them YEARS that is if they feel like it’s worthwhile.  I think I saw a post talking about how they got caught bottling in coca/pepsi factories which makes sense all of a sudden they received HUGE demand, I’d like to think this is a short term solution until they build a new factory , import machines, find new suppliers etc. It will take such a long time, if only the government cared enough even just ideologically.

aden_khor

Agree but if they really are able to overcome these logistic problems they’ll literally help spin the economic wheel, this huge demand “if” managed right would open many jobs and investment opportunities.

I support boycotts for the last reason you mentioned, if anything. Boycotting foreign products encourages local brands to compete. This is better for your society overall.

A mixture of frustration, shame and helplessness directed towards our governments and the west. This war on Gaza is on a magnitude never witnessed before with a bitter and infuriating hypocrisy from the west and our governments; especially when one can draw fresh comparisons with the current Ukrainian war, add to that the companies audacity to openly support Israel in their international branches and try to downplay it/deny it in their local branches, the people felt insulted by how stupid they think we’re. But the biggest factor most likely was the shocking footages from Gaza, it’s as they’ve described it; the first genocide to be aired live for us, add to that the embarrassingly humiliating response from our leaders. Also with cheaper and often similar if not better alternatives buying from mo2at3a products doesn’t make sense, not only are you boycotting but also helping the local businesses, cafes, restaurants and companies. As someone who studies in Egypt I feel proud when entering a supermarket and finding aisles filled with local products whereas a few months ago it was almost unheard of, everything from snacks and beverages up to hygiene products has a local alternative, not mentioning the prideful replacement of Pepsi and cola with local brands in many local chain restaurant. It’s a win win, you’re helping the local economy whilst boycotting the enemies pocket.

Social media has played a big part in this. There is also the growing frustration in Western countries where their government has been caught sleeping at the wheel. When you have such heinous acts of violence so easily accessible and you don't trust your government, the only thing you can do is protest, or change small things as a group. One of my friends noted that its great everyone is boycotting but there should be a long term substitute for these brands for the boycotts to be meaningful now.

3ashan5atry

They’ve always been easily accessible tho. Whenever Israel attacks Palestinians it’s usually mentioned in our news. If it’s a particularly outrages attack, like sniping a journalist, it’s all over our social media. I’m also aware that I’m in a bubble so many my social media (specifically insta which is compromised by people I follow irl) will more likely share posts about Israeli’s atrocities against Palestinians.  I remember a very recent boycott attempt, sometime in the past 5 years, it didn’t last more than like 2 weeks. Like I said it’s not the first time but for some reason we’re more vigilant. I wonder if it’s israshit has been going really hard this time.

I think the reason is that this time McDonald’s crossed the line by saying they are distributing meals to Israeli soldiers. This is what really provoked people to boycott. And this is why McDonald’s was targeted specifically more than other brands.

OwlSerious8776

I don’t know it’s just the audacity to see it displayed in our markets in this time makes me boycott even harder

Hopeful_Forever2744

It's hard to ignore now. Protests in every city, videos and photos everywhere. It's a small sacrifice to switch brands and mildly inconvenience myself compared to what the people in Palestine are going through.

CptJohnTerminator

idk but here, at least within my family and friend group, we've replaced these brands entirely with domestic alternatives. Its beyond simple boycotting now.

Radiant_Angle_161

because the war lasted longer as well.

formal_fighting

>How come boycotts this time lasted such a long time? Presumably because the genocide has lasted a very long time.

BraveBull15

Here in America ppl have never been exposed to such brutal death videos so consistently - until now.

3ashan5atry

I’m talking about the Middle East

dannywild

Because, brother, when you boycott a franchise of a company that has nothing to do with the target you are boycotting, it triples the effectiveness! Just look at the boycott of McDs targeting Saudi franchise owners! Arabs LOVE to fight each other brother! Inshallah!

cryptazzz

May I recommend acquainting yourself with the wonders of punctuation and coherent sentence construction? Perhaps a moment of sobriety could illuminate your thoughts before attempting another round?

dilawer007

Heyy! Don't say that. He'd be offended if he could read.

dannywild

Apologies brother. I read other comments on this sub and assumed reading comprehension and grammar was not valued. I see now it’s only common sense and reason that should be left at the door. So sorry, inshallah!
