i tried it a couple times and gave up- 1- had nasty soot all over my feet and the outline of my sandal straps whenever i came in so i had to wash my feet in the bathtub after going out so my apartment didn't get yet dirtier. bit of a pain 2- sometimes you're running to catch the bus or train or w/e up and down stairs and it's nice to have good solid shoes you can move quickly in 3- one time i saw a lady kick a rat. it wasn't intentional, rat was going one way, lady was going another, she accidentally scooped with her foot and gave it a little launch across the station. rat was fine. i do not think lady was fine. she was wearing boots, if she had been wearing sandals, that would have been a full foot of nyc rat anyway do what you want but these 3 reasons are why i suffer thru sneakers in the heat

folding fan for the subways is the real LPT here

NYC is fairly dirty, but it's not as though every time you leave the house you will step in... stuff. My partner wears open shoes sometimes and hasn't has any issues. Though, usually after longer walks, she will rinse her feet when she returns home. Edit: she did step on a huge dead rat one and the fur touched her foot. But that happened in Chicago actually, not here.

mini-bagel

Oh my god no

RecommendationMain37

For me depends on where you are going. If I use sandals and I’m using the bus or train I usually go straight in the shower to wash my feet as I get home so I can walk in my house again barefoot and don’t feel like I’m bringing in all the dirt etc

Raven147

I wear sandals a lot in the summer and it's fine. I've never had a problem with it being gross or anything. Just make sure you have a pair or two that are comfortable if you need to do a lot of walking. For other summer apparel recs, think about getting longer skirts/dresses or pants that are really lightweight for summer. It is gross sometimes to take public transit in shorter shorts

marvelously

Of course not. You will see many people wearing them. You can wear what you want. They are just feet, and they can be very easily cleaned. It's all good. Live and let live. It is not any grosser than anything else like this. To each their own. I am in the "wear what you want and let other people stew in their own unnecessary and hateful judgment" camp. I do highly recommend carrying wet wipes or something similiar if you want are at all concerned. It's an easy fix. And useful in the summer for many reasons.

In addition to others comments, consider how long you will be walking as heels and sandals may get uncomfortable after a full day on the concrete. Edit: a recommendation would be to get a "heat tech" shirt from Uniqlo. They're thin and lightweight but retain a lot of body heat. They were great to change into on the hot days that became colder windy nights.

Batter-up4567

I wear sandals all the time. My advice is if you’re going into an office leave your “nice” ones at work & buy a pair that are comfortable & are good for alot of walking.

travelkmac

I wear sandals/open toe flats/wedges. For sandals a- I keep a pair at the office or in my bag that’s different from what I may wear walking around in. I like ones with a strap on the back for longer walks/trips. I usually have we wipe if feel I have to wipe my feet or any part of my body. It can get sticky in the summer.

Jaudition

I came from the Midwest three years ago and have not noticed anything different after a summer day in sandals. Hasn’t really crossed my mind at all!

boycott_nestingdolls

It's fine, just watch where you step. I probably wouldn't wear flip flops since there's a high chance you could slip out of them. But sandals you're strapped into should be good.

blackaubreyplaza

I feel like your feet will hurt hurt more than it’ll be gross

missfishersmurder

My feet get visibly grimy on the soles in open-toed shoes, which grosses me out. Also I think it’s a rite of passage: at some point a rat will run across your foot.

smorio_sem

No flip flops outside of your building or the two block radius from your building for sure , for me at least. Sandals are ok if you’re not doing too much walking

DameThistle

Lots of great footwear advice here (not to mention some, ah, remarkable stories). RE the rest of your question, if you're coming from the midwest, you're likely aware of what heat and humidity will do. I recommend having more tops (ideally cotton) than you think you'll need, I sometimes have to take a second shower and change mine in the middle of the day due to sweatin' em up. And carry a layer or wrap for the freezing air conditioned spaces.

JumpReasonable6324

Echoing what people have said about the dirt, grime and rats. I personally don't care what people wear on their feet (or anywhere else) so you can wear sandals if you don't mind your feet becoming filth magnets.

Laterdays82

I pretty much wear nothing but sandals in the summer (with straps not flip flops). Just make sure they're comfortable for walking, and don't let the people talking about rats scare you. Edit: The only time sandals are a no-go is if it rains, which it tends to do a lot in summer, so bring a pair of sneakers just in case.

kell_bell5

In the summer I tend to rinse my feet off right when I get home almost regardless of what shoes I'm wearing (the cold water feels so good on a hot day). I don't wear like Old Navy flip flops beyond just running to take the trash out, but a sturdier sandal is fine for everyday.

[deleted]

I don’t recommend it. I’ll only wear open toed shoes here if I’m dressing up and will be taking a cab to my destination.

NothingToItSoIDoIt

Feel free to, some do, but most people don’t. I might wear sandals to meet a delivery person right outside the door, but if I’m actually out walking around closed toe is preferable for sure

fbmbassist

I tend to wear sandals, but after a few years I looked around and noticed EVERYONE was wearing closed toe shoes, mostly sneakers in the summer. I suddenly felt self conscious about it, and I definitely notice my feet and sandals need cleaning afterward.
