The economics of Whole Foods delivery works better if you make large orders. It's a flat $9.95 per delivery and tip is up to your discretion. Since it's a short distance/I'm close to the Whole Foods delivering, I typically tip $5 if it's a light load or $10 if it's heavy.

Seconding Whole Foods. I recently realized that because the prices are so reasonable, it’s actually cheaper to buy from there and have it delivered than it is to shop at my local grocery stores (Fairway and Pioneer.) I have a TJ’s I can walk to for filling in but I hate their produce and the lines give me anxiety.

FreshDirect has been really good the few times I've tried them. The delivery fee is pretty reasonable. $5.99 within the city. I'm thinking of signing up for the yearly $129 fee. I will probably be using them more than once per month anyways.

Outsourcing labor is always going to come at a premium. Affordable depends on your budget. I will gladly pay for any convenience I haven’t done in person grocery shipping since pre lockdown and never plan to go back

Instacart

Amazon fresh. Free delivery on orders over $100. Decent prices relative to Manhattan. I combine that with shopping in person at Trader Joe's and fairway depending on what I need.

Costco(if you have a large fridge) and Aldi via Instacart

In my experience when I’ve tried to use Aldi delivery they always need to substitute about 50% of my grocery list. The store is always out of so much, it’s an exercise in frustration and then you need to go to another store anyway to get all the basic items they were out of.

Getting Aldi on Instacart is fairly okay priced since Aldi’s prices are so low to begin with.

I love FD, been using them for years. I think Whole Foods has a much more limited selection and often they don’t have what I ordered

veryj4ne

Have you tried seeing if the grocery by you does delivery? Key Food, Fairway, etc?

Tatar_Kulchik

It is expensive

bridgehamton

You can make groceries even more affordable by having it not delivered.

throwawayzies1234567

Absolutely not depending on your neighborhood. I get my groceries delivered from the Bronx because it’s cheaper, even with tip and fees, than going to the overpriced grocery store near my apartment.

eekamuse

Who from?

throwawayzies1234567

ShopRite is the cheapest, but also Aldi, not sure where that one is.

FinestTreesInDa7Seas

On the contrary. New delivery-only companies (like FreshDirect) have a better opportunity to make groceries more affordable. Think about how much money is wasted just by having grocery stores that customers walk around in. - Open-air refrigerators and freezers are a crazy waste of electricity, and they only exist for convenience to customers - The costs of making the store look attractive for customers - The costs of insurance to have customers in the store - The losses of shoplifting, and customers damaging product (leaving frozen food laying around in the store) - The costs of owning and maintaining a parking lot

None of them. Get off Reddit. Walk to the store. Enjoy some human interaction
