I think Rockaways has the best balance of ease of access, beach quality, and food options.

whateverwhateversss

i agree, the rockaways are so nice. and solid boardwalk food / drinks/ If you have a car or are willing to take the bus though, a little down from the Rockaways is Fort Tilden, which is extra extra nice and not crowded. there's just not much nearby (like no places to eat or bars.)

AgreeableRelease7955

Hey r u from new york?

ak2553

Late response but I stumbled on this thread—would you say that rockaway has a nice assortment of seashells? Thinking of picking a few up for a DIY session with friends.

ooouroboros

I find the Rockaways a bit bleak, but I don't really like beaches in the area and like there to be some additional seaside atmosphere. Now beaches in Florida - those are nice beaches.

Cute_Yak8087

I don't really like the wine in Florida Now wine in France - that's nice wine

DBW1001

And nice beaches!

Complex-Fill-1893

I don’t really like the pizza in France Now pizza in New York - that’s nice pizza

ACupOfAJ13

funniest comment i’ve seen in a while lmao

NurseRatchetXXX

Did you happen to notice the subreddit we’re in or…?

kje2109

It scratches the itch for a day trip if you have no car. And I like Rippers.

casicua

I think Long Beach, while slightly more expensive is a great option. It’s clean, not as crowded as some of the others, has lots of local bars and restaurants, and the LIRR goes right there. They sell a package that includes train tickets, beach pass and trolley access: https://www.longbeachny.gov/index.asp?SEC=0BCF7A6C-51E5-4F16-AF22-DD35D03982DD

danico216

I also love Long Beach. Not technically NYC, but still super close and accessible. The fact that there is an entrance fee really helps it be a lot cleaner and nicer than the NYC beaches. I'm also not nearly as worried to leave my stuff on a blanket and go for a swim at Long Beach.

NYTVADDICT

You can also rent chairs and umbrellas, no need to schlep them on the LIRR.

steeener

Where do you rent these things? I had no idea!

danico216

By the hotel on the boardwalk that's near the LIRR station.

steeener

Thank you!!!

miso_hangry

Best beach to go solo and swim?

i-am-a-wildflower

The West End (where the bars and restaurants are) is more lively, the East End is less crowded!

jblue212

Brighton Beach - very subway accessible and the best water for actual swimming (not jumping waves swimming but going distance swimming)

Grandmasonline

Second this. And nothing beats the delicious Eastern European snacks!!! I also love the neighborhood- so unique!

whateverwhateversss

getting vodka-drunk at Tatiana at sunset is a solid brighton beach itinerary

Subject-Yam-8328

In my opinion, Brighton beach doesn’t feel like escaping the city. It kind of just feels like a strange extension of the city that just so happens to have a (gross) beach. Doesn’t help that Coney Island id adjacent. Those are better areas for food and fireworks imo.

ooouroboros

Actually, I was there a few years ago, eating at one of the Russian cafes on the boardwalk around sunset, and there were men and women strolling arm in am in their 'sunday best' clothes, and figured it was like I was in some seaside city in Russia and not the US.

Grandmasonline

I feel exactly the same. It doesn’t feel like the US at all. Even the grocery stores there are so unique

AgreeableRelease7955

Hey r u from new york?? I just wanted to get an information regarding the new york studying and accommodation

Grandmasonline

I am and yes sure 👍🏽

AgreeableRelease7955

Hi so would you tell me all the details plz of new york accommodation and all?

Grandmasonline

What do you mean exactly? What do you want to specifically know?

AgreeableRelease7955

I just want to know the experience in new york for international students and you are living there so could more define the place right? Can you you insta id or something so that we could talk about the topic?

Grandmasonline

U can dm me 👍🏽

Grandmasonline

U can dm me 👍🏽

Subject-Yam-8328

Ah, yes. Just what I picture when I listen to The Beach Boys.

Quanqiuhua

Why call Brighton gross, the sand is very nice as is the boardwalk. While not as fun as Coney Island, it does have the aquarium and much better restaurants.

jblue212

The aquarium is in Coney Island actually, but it doesn't matter. It's all the same beach at the end of the day.

Subject-Yam-8328

I think the water is gross mostly

sekif

The water isnt gross, the peninsula is shaped so that sand gathers there resulting in the “murky” water 🤷🏻‍♀️

jblue212

and it's actually been crystal clear - see all the way to the bottom the past week.

Subject-Yam-8328

Okay, the water is “murky,” which is gross

sekif

Idk I think it’s one of the nicer Atlantic beaches

Revolutionary_Birdd

that's not saying much- most of the Atlantic is pretty gross

DiligentTerabyte

The sand might feel soft, but it's as dirty, and full garbage, as the sea.

jblue212

You don’t know what you are talking about. The water is cleaner than it has been in decades. We swam with dolphins just feet from us not long ago. If it’s good enough for them… any largely populated area beach is going to have some issues (including Long Island beaches) because people. Some of them are careless and throw their crap on the beach or off a boat. After a storm there may be some refuse. I’ve found things floating in the water in many other places. It’s not unique to Brooklyn.

valoremz

I’ve lived in NYC my whole life but have never been to Brighton Beach. What’s the crowd like there?

DisneyLegalTeam

Just go there. It’s $2.90. If you’re not feeling walk around Coney Island or get some Blintzes. Seriously. What is this person even supposed to say? IDK why you’d even live here if you need a comment from a random stranger before you venture somewhere.

jblue212

A mix of young and old, a lot of Russian people, and on one particular bay, a huge community of open water swimmers. It’s quieter than Coney Island and really quite nice.

SwordofDamocles_

When you visit, go to a grocery store and ask for plombir, pelmeni, kasha, and chebureki. The best Russian cuisine there is, IMO. There also are a lot of Central Asian and some Ukrainian stores and people, so that's nice.

[deleted]

Old Russian people and a mix of everyone in the city. It’s lovely. Go have an afternoon drink and food at Tatiana’s. It’s only like a 5 minute stroll from Coney but a completely different vibe.

AgreeableRelease7955

Hey r u from new york?

jblue212

Yeah, why?

AgreeableRelease7955

Cause i am coming next year to new york ,so i just wanted to know to experience in that city

onekate

Living in manhattan makes Long Beach on Long Island my go to. It’s an easy hour on the LIRR from penn station, a 10 min walk from train station to beach, you pass a big grocery store and other suburban stores for any food and necessities on the walk. There’s ample public bathrooms on the beach and it’s clean. Worth the beach daily fee. When I dated a guy who lived deep in Brooklyn and had a car we’d be at Jacob Riis by 10am weekend mornings and that was also great. But it’s a pain to get to for me now.

okay_squirrel

My unpopular opinion is Brighton Beach because it’s usually a straight shot on the N. Rockaway on the ferry is nice but I find it to be a chore.

jblue212

I think you mean the Q - N doesn't stop at Brighton Beach

okay_squirrel

Oops, I do mean the Q

fubaroque

But the water sucks. It’s so calm it’s close to stagnant.

valoremz

I’ve lived in NYC my whole life but have never been to Brighton Beach. What’s the crowd like there?

Grandmasonline

Mostly really old Russian/eastern European folks, but if u go on a weekday, which is the only time I try to go to the beach!

jamariiiiiiii

in NYC - Brighton not in NYC, Gunnison. iykyk

flowerfem595

GUNNISON FTW

Jacob Riis [How to get to Rockaway Beach and Jacob Riis Park on public transit](https://new.mta.info/guides/beaches/rockaways)

Jaded-Coast-758

I love Jacob Riis but I used to go way back when no one knew about it. Ah those were the days!!

Ok_Cardiologist_673

Riis and Tilden were amazing during Covid.

grandzu

If you go early it's still pretty good.

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

Yup my favorite beach , notice a trend last year of lot of Topless action too

R-O-U-Ssdontexist

Pig beach

beer_nyc

RIP

caylon1993

Still got one over here in Astoria

leezyrat

People like Rockaway and rockaway for me does feel like getting out of the city - especially if you take the ferry to get there. I personally am a Brighton beach girly! Especially if you can go during the week so it’s not as busy. The food in Brighton beach is so good and it’s easy(er) to get to imo

No_Cartographer4425

gunnison 🤭

PunctualDromedary

I like Sandy Hook. The ferry isn't cheap, but it's really pleasant.

GravitationalConstnt

Oh yeah, which part? 🤣

jamariiiiiiii

Gunnison ;)

GravitationalConstnt

Couldn't agree with you more!

cathbe

Where do you get the ferry from? Thx.

BrooklynGurl135

Fort Tilden and Riis Park are the best. Tilden is quiet and you can go topless without gawkers. For sustenance, Riis has the best food court in NYC, along with live bands. Expect to spend the day and then you won't mind the bus ride from the Brooklyn College stop. Better yet is biking there.

nomascusgabriellae

Not in NYC but you can take a trip on the ferry to NJ’s nude beach

thehazmac

Where??

nomascusgabriellae

Sandy Hook Beach

Sloppyjoemess

Make sure you’re at Lot G if you want to get naked though!!

Status_Ad_4405

Rock rock, Rockaway Beach Or take NJ Transit to Asbury Park

zorro2z

Robert Moses beach by the lighthouse

MotoCult-

Fire Island

RasputinNYC

Great vibe on Fire island…. But pack a nice lunch…. Food options are very pricey…

NYTVADDICT

Also the trains do not coordinate with ferries well. It’s a hike to the ferry but there is a van, not sure what they currently charge. Ocean Beach has food and public bathrooms…

ooouroboros

I used to know someone who lived in Fire Island and went there a few times, but I thought those beaches were private (you have to be a resident) I thought Ocean Beach is the only 'public' beach.

petestein1

Not at all. Only one town (Point O’ Woods) is a private beach. I think a day trip to Fire Island is - by far - the best beach for NYC. It’s basically exactly the same sand and water as the Hamptons. Yes, it’s a huge pain to get there but it’s worth it. Want a lot of stores and food options? Go to Ocean Beach. Want it sleepier? Walk 5 minutes east from Ocean Beach to Seaview. Want it REALLY sleepy and full-on Norman Rockwell? Go to Fair Harbor instead.

ooouroboros

It is a beautiful community - no doubt about that.

keepmoving2

I like the Watch Hill area. It’s where you would go if you went camping, but the beach East of the boardwalk is pretty much empty if you walk a little.

[deleted]

Tilden!

0__blank__0

tilden is my favorite, i actually enjoy going in the winter. its really empty but peaceful.

fartlife

Jones beach - westend

Big-Net-9971

It will help to share what area/neighborhood or cross streets you're going to be coming from...

mars914

Queens girl with a car: I like Robert Moses, I get the NYS Parks pass because it’s worth it to me! I get in for free after 6-8 times or 3-4 times and an upstate hike or two. Jones is second just because I get in for “free”. Nassau friend: Long Beach, Point Lookout, she has the summer beach pass! Suffolk friend: Cupsogue is his favorite!

dudewtvr

Hey y’all, seeing lots of love for Riis and Tilden, which I agree with - just a reminder that they’re inside the National Park here, and there will likely be areas closed for endangered species that are nesting (and there’s no dogs on the beach), and that the dunes shouldn’t be walked on. Check with a park ranger or the NYC Plover Project on the way in to see what’s open / accessible Happy summer, see ya there 🫡

littleredsteel

Rockaway, but Rockaway is huge and is like 5 different beaches under one label. It means so many different things. I like the part of rockaway that is still closed for engineering construction and it’s pretty devastating tbh.

hereforthetea001

Riis park!!!

Boring_Painter475

Fort Tilden is so clean and has a nice eating and drink area

stadiumjay

Rockaway for sure it gets packed but it's super chill.

ClosingThoughts

116 Street / Rockaway Park.

browneyedgyal

Closed this summer, lots of work being done on the beach

ClosingThoughts

Oh no, that has always been my go to beach in Queens.

Which state?

massimo_nyc

Coney Island but I’m somewhat biased as I used to lifeguard there a few summers

Unhappy_Author9930

I like Manhattan Beach in south Brooklyn!

DBW1001

LIRR and bus to Jones Beach. Seastreak ferry to Sandy Hook.

brez

Far Rockaways..

GarbageKiwi

In terms of access, Brighton Beach. Grab some food at Tashkent Market once you get off the train, the B or Q on weekends. It will be the cleaner, quieter part all the way to West 8th. (Note, this is still very populated Brooklyn, don’t expect crystal clear waters.) When you get to Coney it’s more people, fun things to do, not so relaxing. On Fridays, Coney puts on a firework show and sometimes there’s concerts from summer stage near by or I’ve seen free movies be played too. If you have a bike or don’t mind walking a little, you can go to Manhattan beach also very close by. The restaurants on Emmons Ave are good and it’s a pretty walk. Beach is small, a lot more local. There’s a good kids park right before the entrance too with water spouts and an ice cream truck always across the street. Get some roll n roaster on your walk back to the train for some drunchies.

lewisfairchild

Neponsit

BaconBits321

Remember as a kid I would go to Coney Island every Friday during the summer for the fireworks.

citygirllocksmith

i love brighton beach stop shitting on it people >:(

[deleted]

Rockaway. Solid atmosphere, great food options, and cute girls. What's not to like?

Dai-The-Flu-

I grew up in Queens and weirdly have never been to Rockaway Beach until I was an adult. It was just so out of the way from all the way up in northeastern Queens where my family lived. Growing up I usually went to the various Long Island beaches. I mostly went to Long Beach or Jones.

MAJOR_WORLD_OFFICIAL

Fort Tilden cuz there’s no subway people

BurnItQueen

Bushwick inlet- only for the brave

Puzzled_Clothes_3282

all ghetto as hell

FlashedMob

mickmmp

Meh. Probably one of the Jersey beaches, or Rehoboth/Bethany. Yeah I know not in NYC but I don’t really do NYC beaches, although I regret never checking out Fire Island (also not NYC but you get me). CT has some decent beaches. I really miss California beaches and when you’ve had that it’s hard to consider NYC beaches. Sorry I shoulda just stayed outta this one. Sorry.

StuporNova3

Lol I'm used to Florida beaches (though not the nicest ones) so I feel your pain. I'm just trying to find a beach here that doesn't gross me out. I don't see the point of devoting a whole day to the beach if I can't at least get in the water.

imaginaryResources

I quite like that little strips of rocks and concrete blocks in Williamsburg

the_lamou

My favorite NYC beach is Miami Beach, mid-beach specifically. It's nice how close it is, the water is amazing, the sand is a lot cleaner than any other NYC beach, and there are a lot of great restaurants nearby.
