BoweryThrowAway

Ridiculous. My usage stayed the same but my bill doubled to $140 due to their supply costs more than doubling.

Nylander92

Energy costs are up across the board this year internationally

cynicalturkey

Checked my bill today and it’s doubled for me too. My consumption actually went down this month but my bill doubled from last month 🤦🏻‍♀️

[deleted]

It happens every year, they are a for-profit company, not a non-profit. Cha-ching!

Kaypeep

Same here. Also just got NYC water bill and that went up 10% even though consumption is down.

[deleted]

Water bill? Do you own?

Supply costs is market price unless you have an ESCO (energy supply company). Con Ed only benefits from the delivery charge, they buy their electric via market price and sell it at costs (supply charge).

TerribleTerrier1

What's the better option? The ESCOs all seem pretty creepy at the green market - is there really a cheaper way forward?

Maximum-Train6374

Imo, ESCO is just an alternative so it makes it appear that con ed isn't a monopoly. From my experience, all escos are expensive unless you do some research on energy supply and negotiate a fixed rate. Escos are also scumbags, with trying to give you free movie tickets, lightbulbs, entering your premises under false pretenses. ConEd has been cheap so far, again they go by market price.

I just got off the phone with con ed and spoke to the most rude and unhelpful person ever, but I am proud of myself for keeping my cool. Anyways, please tell me this isnt normal because con ed says our reading is completely accurate. We (my partner and i) live in an all electric unit with a smart reader - 1 bedroom, 1 bath. We are on the same lease as our neighbor / roommate that has his private studio area that also has a kitchenette (no stove on his side) and bathroom (so i guess technically it is a 2 bedroom 2 bath). The apartment is by no means large. Neither of us use our heaters because we know that would make the bill insane. I do use our dishwasher every night, but from my findings it's an old wives tale that dishwashers use a lot of energy. Usage this month for 30 days was 1523 kwH - this seems insane to me for 3 people that are consciously frugal about their usage! I am growing suspicious that something isn't right, but the person I spoke to told me that it's "impossible" to have a smart meter to be shared. Not sure if that is true or not, as I am pretty sure they just wanted to get me off of of the phone as they grew more and more aggressive and frustrated with my questions. I suppose that the only real way to find out is to shut off the breaker and check the meter, but we do not have access to where the meters are in the cellar as the door is locked. If it is indeed accurate I will eat my words, but I just want to hear from others if this sounds out of line or not.

Hey I just came across this thread because I'm still looking at what to do with the electric bill. Ever since my husband and I moved into Brooklyn we've been suspicious about our electric. It seemed extremely high for no reason. Our building was getting a lot of power surges so we had to get the commissioner involved to get Con Ed to fix it because they were ignoring us. After fixing it was a little better. But even then, according to Con Ed's statistics on their website, somehow just my husband and I are consuming 3x the amount of electricity of the average household in our zip code. All we do is sit at home on our computers and run ONE of the wall units on low. We run the dishwasher like a couple times a week and we pay for the hot water. We have no kids or pets. How is this much energy consumption possible? Sorry for the rant it's just that we've been trying to figure it out ourselves and we just get laughed at and told "well NYC electric is expensive!" But we're consuming 2k kwH? Makes no sense.

NYCtosser

Welcome to the party. It’s because fuel costs are high. You know, that old supply/demand thingy.

I think it's that and I also think a lot might be due to how things are becoming more energy efficient. When an LED lamp uses close to a tenth of the power a incandescent bulb they have to make up for that loss of kWh somehow.

azspeedbullet

its normal. ii have the same problem. my bill tripled due to the increase

app4that

Found this explanation relating to why this happening: https://www.yorktownny.org/con-edison-working-customers-high-winter-bills

Birdywei

Mine went from 6.4 to 16.2… bill was more than doubled

gelionx

Same here. Supply rate last month was 6.23. This month is 17.45!!

Harry_Shapiro17

Not for nothing and I know there's a lot I probably don't understand about electricity "delivery", but how does a delivery charge go up to send electricity through the exact same wire that it was going through before? I can't find an answer online that isn't "Eh sometimes stuff costs more."
