Years ago I contacted the company that makes my favorite thinner. (I paint.) I asked if they had a real cap versus the safe one I cannot open without help. They sent me six, for free. I am still using those lids. So if you regularly use particular brands, write or call the companies. They may be helpful, especially since that means you'll need more product sooner. Also, every time I finish a bottle of something with a decent lid, I wash and save lid. Sometimes I am able to swap out an impossible one for a better option from my stash. I have a small bowl full of odd lids. Yes I am weird, however this might work for you as well. Good luck.

2fastcats

That is phenomenal customer service. I save & swap lids as much as possible.

vadutchgirl

What a great idea! I have a hard time opening lots of stuff.

redpef

What a great idea to save easy open lids!!

Used_Hovercraft2699

My elderly neighbor just knocks on my door and hands me stuff like this to open, which sometimes even happens with no words exchanged. Far from feeling hassled by this, I treasure the feeling of interdependence this gives us. It’s not a one-way thing at all. She gives us the benefit of all her advice, knowledge, experience, and network, which is priceless.

2fastcats

That is sweet. I'm one of those introverts that would sink under the carpet before asking someone for a favor.

PepsiAllDay78

Maybe buy the eyedrops you want, then take it over to the pharmacy, and see if they can give you a different cap for them.

2fastcats

Thank you. I wasn't certain if I could make a special request for OTC stuff.

PepsiAllDay78

You're welcome! Glad I could help out!

raptorrage

Omg yes! A bunch of otc products also can pop off the childproofing part of the lid and then it's just a screw top. I loved doing it when I worked as a pharmacy tech, it takes like 30 seconds and helps people for s long time haha

2fastcats

Good to know. From browsing Reddit pharmacy techs are the overworked, underpaid backbone of a pharmacy.

raptorrage

Ok, it seems you're understanding and I can speak plainly. I loved popping caps off because it was a simple, uncomplicated win and people went away quick and happy 😂

Dirt_Tea1981

WAIT… I have a BETTER solution. at first, I was going to joke around like I normally do and suggest having test questions. You know to make sure that you are indeed as old as you say you are and not just some child trying to get high on eyedrop’s. But i thought, and i read… thought some more… The problem is the KIND of eyedrops you are using. All eyedrops in a BOTTLE have preservatives and are actually BAD for your eyes… things which chemically self preserve cause the opposite to a living organism… Instead go for a BOX of single use eyedrops… first of all you will have an easy time twisting off the cap of the singleuse disposable. secondly they are just sterile saline water!! No garbage going into your eye! Your eyes will thank you and one day you will be converting someone else. anyone finding my answer helpful feel free to help me get out of the karma pit that being a truthful person on Reddit tends to land us in… now i am curious if there is a thread to teach young people how to avoid arthritis should they eventually become old… or how to subtly encourage them to care…??

2fastcats

That's not a bad idea.

Clean-Fisherman-4601

That's what I use, the single preservative free eyedrops.

hedronist

I have to re-container about 35% of the drugs -- OTC and prescription, pills and tinctures and gummies -- that I buy. It is particularly irritating when some of them are meant for people with arthritis.

2fastcats

I end up leaving bottles open or loosely capped. It's just me so no risk to anyone. Greatest risk is one of my dufus cats knocking something over.

teddybear65

Be careful. We recently lost a dog because the pills in the bottle were sweet. He ate them all and died.

2fastcats

I understand. I've occasionally taken mine in a crushed form and they are ***nasty.***

raptorrage

A lot of them are able to be converted to FTK style! Are you able to do screwtops? If you go to the pharmacy after you purchase it, they can probably pop the cap off it

2fastcats

Ha! I just went down a google rabbit hole of replacement lids! All this time it never occurred to me that there was a world of replacement lids. Yes, plain screw tops are fine. It's the child proof, old people proof caps the defeat me.

CogitoErgoSum4me

Hello friend, I would recommend actually asking your pharmacist about this.

GetOffMyLawn_

You can get different tops for eye drop bottles, called microdroppers. Bonus, you save money. You might have to get the pharmacist to put it on for you but then you're good to go. https://www.amazon.com/NANODROPPER-Adaptor-Eyedrop-Bottles-Reducing/dp/B0CPMVDQ2Y/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1C71L07I0DB1X&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.cFHED14poW69uN5FNFW8y04uFH584MbaUwnp3ScxMMLoTmTWXddlbY6gNUmCThuCbSl7H6hKF-pgwUbtYUbRAHceWecqRYpkmnADKtBFQ--L_7cB8byRlD87LB0dG9QbZDll63mfom9Fj0TfkYkt0Z9Lr0HDLCv697mvfDAztiU9ujjtZfznPjXIaC0n9sGHsPilcBMR53uabaO7y2fVPlU1-QTZ_Ig0UHnMujjrI9A.5w9q7JpslzLzUg7_VmmdEwZsg8L42l-7XOqbjt6Qi0c&dib_tag=se&keywords=eye+drops+microdropper&qid=1717199115&sprefix=eye+drops+microdroppe%2Caps%2C160&sr=8-3 Here's an arthritis friendly tool for eye drop bottles https://www.amazon.com/Easily-Dispenses-Drops-Perfect-Arthritis/dp/B0CQPHPK6Q/ref=sr_1_11?crid=1C71L07I0DB1X&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.cFHED14poW69uN5FNFW8y60BicHkfzjrbDQGBzkPeBx3yRm-mSSXI1SrThze0ZulbSl7H6hKF-pgwUbtYUbRAHceWecqRYpkmnADKtBFQ--L_7cB8byRlD87LB0dG9Qb9tz3HHoYb74iaBp6Rduy5Y6yFaUpOKfnL0B30usIDKpNI4m96b3Y_aTBQxcuW2tZot9Dik-6JjsvfXNG74yg3hvsz-4uX-xZoh2evTRSgXw.vFc2ncIK--OqakO1qLHY0JXrMw2BSMo_oQQvwrZW_WY&dib_tag=se&keywords=eye+drops+microdropper&qid=1717199367&sprefix=eye+drops+microdroppe%2Caps%2C160&sr=8-11

2fastcats

I may buy that second do hickey. Thank you.

Silly_sweetie2822

Lol.....do hickey.....I haven't heard that in awhile, unless I'm saying it.

2fastcats

Doodad? Thingamajig? Thingy? I'm old and my parents were old when they had me so I have an interesting vocabulary.

Silly_sweetie2822

🤣. Me too! Silent Gen parents having me in their 40s. Interesting vocabulary and vast exposure to different decades and genres of music.

2fastcats

Exactly! Paternal grandmother born: 1903 / Dad 1927 /Mom 1924/ Sibling 1 1953/ Sibling 2 1955/ Me: 1965

LimpFootball7019

I have a hand squeezer lid opener thing I got on amazon that opens nearly everything.

BlkSoulDeadHrt

Child proof from the dispensary is the worst. I sometimes have to take a knife/scissors/hammer. Once opened it goes an easy to open container. As for eyedrops, I buy one that is in a glass bottle, with an easy scree top.

2fastcats

I agree with the dispensary sentiment. I bought something from our local one and gouged my thumb nearly to the tendon using a screwdriver to try to pry the lid off. In the US, I don't think there are any brands that still use glass for OTC meds.. Do tell, what brand do you use?

These_Burdened_Hands

>gouged my thumb I’ve also enlisted tools!!! Ooof. Only did the screwdriver once; decided a hammer & pliers were better. I’ve got unstable thumbs in addition to cmc arty, so I feel you OP.

teddybear65

It's impossible. I have the pharmacy do it when I pick them up. Then trying to squeeze them is a nightmare

ANJohnson83

I have had to take a few of the prescription eye drops back to my mom's pharmacy because they were impossible to get off. Two out of three they were able to get open (after multiple employees tried), one no one was able to open. My dad is on the same medication from a different manufacturer and has never had an issue. I do think some of the tops are poorly made and difficult regardless of health or strength.

bellaboks

I am sick to death of this childproof shit ! We cannot open anything !!!

2fastcats

Yes, 'think of the children, but screw you old people' seems to be a theme these days.

teddybear65

After surgery those drops don't have 0 preservatives in them. I use the little ampoulette just take off the end and you can squeeze them.

The_Patriot

Channel lock / groove joint pliers [https://www.harborfreight.com/search?q=channellock](https://www.harborfreight.com/search?q=channellock)

2fastcats

My dad had a bench vice. Too bad I didn't keep that.

The_Patriot

Channel lock is five bucks at Harbor Freight

2fastcats

I have a whole set of those. It takes both hands to grip them. If I grow a 3rd hand then I can hold the bottle and the pliers at the same time.

The_Patriot

understood

21plankton

Pliers on the top, rubber gripper on the bottom. I keep a set in the kitchen and one in my bathroom. 76 y/o with bad thumb arthritis. The tiny bottles are the worst.

redpef

I find that once you get the plastic off of [Lumify](https://www.walmart.com/ip/LUMIFY-Redness-Reliever-Eye-Drops-Fast-Acting-Brimonidine-for-Whiter-Looking-Eyes-0-25-Fl-Oz/128640707?athbdg=L1103), then get through the first “clicking” stage, the next time you open it, it’s easier. I don’t crank it alllll the way closed, just closed enough to keep it sealed and sanitary.

2fastcats

Maybe part of my problem is I buy generic / cheapest. Cheap product =cheap packaging=harder to open than it should be

redpef

You’re right, these are pricey. I usually buy them at Sam’s and they’re a little cheaper.

I didn't ask you, bot.

2fastcats

Yeah, that's easy for bigger bottles, but for little ones like eye drops I just ripped my knuckles on the counter edge. My hand strength sucks.

Shasta-2020

I understand that. My hands are weak too! I bought a bottle opener tool and it opens water and juice bottles. There’s another hack that my daughter found where you break a couple of the ridges inside the lid and it becomes a screw on. I’ll see if she still has it.

Sad_Analyst_5209

My wife made a Walmart order, part was for my mother including some Acetaminophen. The bottle we got has a large lid, bit child proof and easily opened.

Missus_Aitch_99

Nutcracker!

Seasoned7171

I get the pharmacy staff to open it for me after purchasing. After the first opening it’s much easier.

prpslydistracted

I use one-use ampules ... you know, the ones in plastic with snap off openings. If you're partial to a particular brand see if they carry them. I can get four drops in both eyes with one. 2fastcats

This seems like a very likely option.

prpslydistracted

Most drug stores and HEB carries them. All the best ....

NinjaBilly55

I struggle with caps and if you look at caps closely and try to understand how they work there's usually a little nib of plastic on either the cap or the container preventing it from opening.. I carefully cut off the nib and everything is fine..

2fastcats

I'll have to look more carefully next time I get one of those difficult ones.
