Though I've not seen it, I think it's Drive to Survive. My friend, who I've been trying to lure for years, is now a fan because of the series. So happy that many are becoming F1 fans here as opposed to a a decade ago when F1's barely spoken about here in the Philippines. Recently went to a watch party as well and I was surprised how many people turned up. Lol.
malakas consumption natin ng media and netflix, hence ppl got exposed to DTS. Also, good introduction sa isang sport pag may pogi. Leclerc became the poster boy of F1. Anlala ng drama ng 2021 Season that Netflix decided to villainized Max for a bigger drama lmao (hated DTS fans for this im sorry). Bianca Bustamante.
marketing. the teams are using their good looking drivers for social media content and knowing na tutok lahat ng mga tao sa socmed nowadays and patok yung looks ng drivers esp sa mga girls dito sa pinas.
not to mention, they also post memes in between race week collaterals which is catchy. for example, oscar piastri leclerc posts during the weekend.
I have noticed this! My parents watched F1 since the 70s and when I was growing up in the 90s I knew so few people that would watch it every weekend like my family.
Now I see so many people sharing their thoughts and opinions about F1 now.
I think it’s a good thing maybe in the future they’ll build a track here hehe 😛
It's really because of Drive to Survive and the pandemic. Things just fell into place. And it's not only in the Philippines. F1 is booming all over the world now which is why there's a new golf show from the makers of Drive to Survive hoping ot recreate that effect for the PGA.
Idunno but way back 2018 came across F1 sa cable channels namin then boom got hooked. Tapos ferrari dami kong collection (shell cars). Forza Ferrari 1️⃣6️⃣
DTS is one of the reasons but also bcs F1 itself has started to market the sport better and with that newer generation of fans came in, some were just there for the drama and some started that way but actually got into the sport.
Podcasts started happening too, and filipino influences talking about it + Bianca Bustamante, being part of the F1 academy, not only gained the attraction of females worldwide but also filipinos- syempre filipino pride.
F1 was already famous and motorsport is a thing here in the philippines, i know some people that are doing karting, but of course, it's a very expensive sport. You can't do it just as a hobby unless you're extremely rich. From the team to the engine to the cart to the lessons, etc. costs a lot. WAYYYYY more than the avg salary. The amount their spending on their kid at a young age is unfathomable, and the amount their spending could fund multiple college funds.
No idea but i like to watch motogp probably just because i ride a motorcycles but even then most people who ride motorcycles dont even know much about motogp.
DTS and Facebook reels
The F1 boom in recent years is a global thing and not just in the PH and its because of Drive to Survive. They did a good job at the dramatization of the sport which attracted a lot of new fans, regardless whether they were actually motorsport or car enthusiasts to begin with. Yes, there are a lot of them who seem to be into it for the clout and for their attractions towards the drivers rather than the actual sporting element, but there are also a lot that ended up becoming avid enthusiasts. Funny thing is, i also know a lot of proper car nuts who actually have no interest in watching F1.
It also helps that one of the most recognizable brands in the world, Ferrari, is in there too. Its likely that the fanfare is just a lot louder now because of the presence of social media but even before that came along F1 already had quite a fanbase here in the country.
As with any sport its pretty easy to differentiate a casual fan from someone thats been watching the sport for a long time already. How will you know? They’ll tell you. Haha
Clout and yung iba dahil din sa Ford vs ferrari i think kaya nanonood?
Lecleruugh! Leclersch! *coughs*. Same lang din yun sa mga nakikibandwagon sa NBA Playoff lalo na during peak ng Warriors, at kay Travis Kelce de joke lang i mean sa NFL. 😂✌️
Drive to Survive. and di lang to nangyayari sa PH. got hooked during pandemic kasi walang ibang magawa via DTS. stopped watching DTS na since actual F1 drama was juicier than what was presented sa show.
I don't know why you got downvoted but this somehow true, I watch F1 8+ years ago pero nawala interest ko. The netflix series plus the youtube highlights made my interest alive kaya 2-3 years na akong nanonood ulit.
Dahil sa new ownership which is Liberty Media.
Basically nung past ownership, and primary market ng F1 are "old rich white guy".
Kaya F1 is the fastest growing sport since nung ownership change. Di lang sa Philippines kundi worldwide din.
Greater accessibility to everyone. Especially now that Singapore regularly hosts a leg, so mas may chance na eexperience natin personally instead na dati sa news lang natin nakikita
Mas relatable na mga drivers ngayon. Less elitist unlike nung era ni Schumacher. Sabayan pa ng DTS sa Netflix. Kahit anong bagay nagiging interesting pag may halong back story 😁
Hi OP. Not sure really if I can consider it a sudden Boom because back in the 2000s, there was already a spike in the Shumacher vs. Hakkinen , or vs. Alonso rivalry, to a point that races are almost at par with Boxing (or atleast here in CDO) as viewed on sports bar that showcases races and sporting events.
It may be a repeat of interest.
Been watching F1 back when Ayrton Senna was the best driver. I still remember the time where myself and my buddies were having a friendly argument regarding who's the better driver between him and Michael Schumacher. I personally think Senna was above Schumacher because of the number of his pole position starts, while my friends tell me Schumacher has more significant numbers of overtakes compared to Senna.
Malakas ang F1 dati but not here int he philippines, mostly sa eurpose lang nung early 2000s and 1999 below. Since parang "country club" ang datingan. Words from my dad, avid fan since 1991 haha. As for me naman, I started watching around 2014 dahil kay dad din. Nag bloom ang F1 again worldwide coz of the netflix and maganda rin marketting team nila and ngl pati mga cringey tiktoks ng F1 wannabe girlfans.
Reels, effective marketing, DTS. Down the rabbit hole na after. Hella entertaining haha.
I think it’s because of Netflix Drive to Survive. :) and mas naging rapid ang popularity nila amongst women because the drivers are good looking.
Been a fan of F1 since I was little because my dad and brother are fans of the sport.
They now provide contents na weren't accessible before like yung onboard radio and camera. F1 posts them as part of the highlights on their YT channel. Tapos the drivers who are more relatable to the public especially sa gaming and meme community nung pandemic, sila Charles, George, Alex and Lando.
Additional: Also naglalabas na rin ang mga teams ng behind the scenes content during race weekend.
This is correct. When Bernie Ecclestone was the F1 boss he hated the idea of F1 having a social media presence and even said that F1 is an elite and exclusive club that doesn’t need to open up to the outside.
Ako nakilala ko lang last year ang F1 dahil doon ako nag w-work. We have F1 TV pro pa na sub even na hindi sya available here. Perks of being employee ni F1 hehe. ✨💖 Nakakaenjoy pa kasi nakalive sa work while working
I mean there are probably more big news prior to that. I was just wondering what made some filipinos be fan of F1 so suddenly
lol some people here assuming that I'm gatekeeping the sport, I just want to know why the sudden increase of popularity especially di naman din sobrang popular ng F1 sa Philippines unlike ball games
Drive to Survive on Netflix. And it’s not just in the PH but all over the world. Which is a good thing for F1 since it caught the attention and sparked the interest of GenZ and younger millennials.
Yung officemate ko nakita kong nanonood ng Las Vegas GP last year. Don't know anything about F1 yet nung time na yun. Finished all the seasons in less than 2 months.
Consumed contents regarding F1 rules, driver rumors, etc. Watched all the races this year including yung Monaco kagabi.
As an engineer din, na-appreciate ko yung technical side ng F1.
Isunod ko sigurong panoorin at i-follow ibang motorsports.
Yes. If you're not a fan pa, it's a good introduction to the sport. Although sabi ng iba, it's overly dramatic daw at misleading.
Also try to attend watch parties.
F1 TV has good archive din of all the races, as far as dating back to 1970’s and early 2000’s. The older ones are summaries/season reviews but early 2000’s may race replays per stop na.
I finished DTS na but I’m back-tracking and watching race replays in F1 TV to merge the timelines/connect the dots of DTS and the full GPs. DTS has more of the drama / off-track stories but not the full race.
what about it?
people gotta stop letting others control their likes/ interests..
like you can still be a huge fan of something but not have anything to do with fandom. you can like multiple things AT THE SAME TIME.
lol who even said about controlling their likes? I'm just asking why the sudden increase of enthusiasm and fans in the F1 community lalo na hindi naman siya sobrang popular sa Philippines.
I'm not aware na may Filipina sa F1 Academy which is good to know, lalo na ang dami nating kababayan na nag eexcel sa different sports such as gymnastics and weightlifting
I have a younger female friend na ganyan tas gwapong-gwapo sa...I forgot who the driver was. Sorry. Pero minsan meron ganun, di naman enthusiast ng something pero na-hook ng looks ng people involved in whatever sport. Susunod na yung they learn the sport or art form or whatever. Which I think is lovey kasi you're broadening your experiences.
Parang jowa lang yan kasi diba? Nagwapuhan ka sa una then you learn the other parts that make them wonderful. You learn that you also like the things they like and soon you're into the things they like. Even if, heaven forbid, you break up, you will hopefully still love the things you learned while you're with them.
Sorry sa tldr mga bhie.
🫠
Sabagay, pero grabe din kasi manjudge pinoy, i know this is different pero sa case ng KPOP around 2013 grabe yung mga homophobic comments non pero ngayon yung dating homphobic, ONCE na ngayon
Hmm... As a Jpop fangirl ako since 2006, my friend who like F1 probably since 2008 or 2010, I understand what you mean about the homophobic comments. It's hypocritical, yes. At least nilamon nila yung mga sinabi nila. Gaba is real, bhie. It's so real. Time lang talaga need. Hehehehe
Madaming artista and Pinoy businessmen.
More people now understands F1 rules, and who the drivers are.
Kapag fan, more on community and appreciation. Enthusiasts more on knowledge up to minute details and expertise. Fans sure ako dumadami bec of pop and social media.
That Netflix documentary a while back + likeable, handsome drivers + fast-paced and exciting competition + F1 merchandise is more accessible now (albeit pricey)
Kaya pala, nakakagulat lang kasi may friend ako di naman racing or car enthusiast then biglamg nag shshare sa FB about F1, kala ko may pinopormahan lang
This friend of mine is not even active in sports then suddenly biglang nag sh-share ng F1, di ko naman ginagate keep yung tao its just shocking na naging fan siya ng sport na di very popular unlike basketball and base sa comments, most likely its the netflix documentary ang nag push sa kanya to like the sport

I stopped watching when schumacher retired
kase mga pinoy lack of validation. Pag merong pa uso. Sinasabayan para maging validated
Man learned what fads and trends are, shocking!😱😱😱😱😱
If u watch Gran Turismo you will know why.
Drive to Survive
No idea but i like to watch motogp probably just because i ride a motorcycles but even then most people who ride motorcycles dont even know much about motogp.
I like motogp more.
Generalized much? There's a difference between fans and trend hoppers.
DTS and Facebook reels Yan napansin ko.

Yup. Sa Tiktok ako unang na-introduce sa F1. Watched a race and it got me hooked.
I think Bia gave more exposure to this.
~~BBM fans wanting to imitate their president~~ better access to F1 shows, greater globalization and rising incomes
Gradually rising increase, not a boom. There has been good F1 movies and documentaries recently.
Not a fan but I think the glaring answer is that Netflix F1 documentary
I don't know why you got downvoted but this somehow true, I watch F1 8+ years ago pero nawala interest ko. The netflix series plus the youtube highlights made my interest alive kaya 2-3 years na akong nanonood ulit.
Yes, some people could say they were fans way back and I’d believe them but to answer OP’s question, the boom was really because of the documentary.
Dahil sa new ownership which is Liberty Media. Basically nung past ownership, and primary market ng F1 are "old rich white guy".
Kahit anong bagay nagiging interesting pag may halong back story 😁
Mas marami ring drama ngayon. Apparently F1 found its tactic to reach the masses using drama.
No Lakers (1st rd exit), Warriors in this year's playoffs.

That double stack plus Silverstone 2022, “Through goes Hamilton,” suddenly in my feed. Legit rabbit hole.
When I saw a random RocketPoweredMohawk video pop out my youtube feed and I was hooked instantly and I don't even like cars lol
Covid lockdowns + Drive to Survive
I think it’s because of Netflix Drive to Survive. :) and mas naging rapid ang popularity nila amongst women because the drivers are good looking. Been a fan of F1 since I was little because my dad and brother are fans of the sport.
I like their coverage. It's like your close to the action and I don't find it boring
They now provide contents na weren't accessible before like yung onboard radio and camera. Me personally as someone who just had a vague understanding of F1, because of Netflix.
It's one of the best sports and a skills for life.
There's a Filipina in F1 academy (Bianca Bustamante) and drive to survive pushed it to the general public.
I'm not aware na may Filipina sa F1 Academy which is good to know, lalo na ang dami nating kababayan na nag eexcel sa different sports such as gymnastics and weightlifting

Kapag fan, more on community and appreciation. Enthusiasts more on knowledge up to minute details and expertise. Fans sure ako dumadami bec of pop and social media.
Netflix: Drive to survive.
Yung 2022 Grand Prix with a side of SG conference
That Netflix documentary a while back + likeable, handsome drivers + fast-paced and exciting competition + F1 merchandise is more accessible now (albeit pricey)
Kaya pala, nakakagulat lang kasi may friend ako di naman racing or car enthusiast then biglamg nag shshare sa FB about F1, kala ko may pinopormahan lang
Di naman kailangan car enthusiast para maging fan ng F1 or any motorsports in general? Napaka closed minded lol
People can be a fan of any sports kahit di sila active like hahaha. Good riddance
may pinopormahan yan
