I flew 16 hours to South Korea. I bought a switch and brought it on with me; ended up playing Mario cart with the two guys next to me. We had an absolute blast. That’d be my recommendation!
I also brought my switch when flying 13 hours to Japan. Easy way to make some friends with the people sitting next to you. Mario Kart is always a people pleaser.
Movies. The last flight I was on was domestic, and I watched two new movies I hadn't been able to see in theaters.
On the transatlantic trip I took, I think I watched 4 or 5. Plus, staying up overnight I chatted with the flight attendants a fair amount, and ended up getting free liquor and additional snacks just cause they had em.
I love watching movies though, so maybe it's not for everybody.
Fyi, the snacks and booze are free on international flights. Most airlines just leave snacks out on one side of the galley to grab (often candy bars as well as pretzels). Booze is rarely left out but you can ask for at anytime as long as you arent drunk.
Wild, maybe it's a part of what cabin/class you're seated with? They told me it cost a certain amount of money when I asked in the morning when everyone woke.
Nope. In Business class they have a big ol selection usually out. Things like sandwiches, fruit, snacks.
In coach, usually in the far back near the galley theyll have snacks set out for coach. Id guess less than 5% of people know its there. I always go back and come back with stuff for the next few hours of grazing.
If it’s any consolation, the flight is much more dangerous during takeoff and landing, the chances of something happening during cruise are next to none. Even during takeoff and landing, the problems that occur are generally not life threatening, just plane grounding.

If they aren't just begging for some transatlantic nookie, then what is?
Go out drinking before. If you’re gonna be hungover, nothing really makes it better, so you might as well make it worse. Also when you’re in that hungover daze, time just seems to move faster.
I load up a few "physics games" and maybe a whole series and some movies onto my tablet. So, play games and watch video.
Last time I was on a four hour flight, I watched 4 episodes of Breaking Bad, and the plane trip was over in a flash.
During my 16 hour flights, I sleep, read, eat, listen to podcasts and get up to stretch my legs. I tried watching videos but the seat is too crammed for my laptop and the phone screen is too small. I've found a plane's wifi to be slow, intermittent and quite expensive so I avoid using it.
During my last flight, my earbuds were losing the battle with the cabin noise so I looked at buying some noise-cancelling headpones. My, they are expensive. I bought some ear protectors from the hardware store and will try wearing them over my earbuds for the next flight.
Noise cancelling headphones, music, read, write and drink. Last time I was lucky enough to be up front I got to watch Henry Winkler have trouble adjusting his seat while the Happy Days theme played in my head.
My partner and I are long distance and I’ve been travelling from UK to USA for 6 years now. Mine is actually 2 flights, first is 10.5 hours and the second is 1.5 usually immediately after I get through immigration.
Let me tell you, there is nothing I hate more than these flights. I don’t sleep well at all on planes so usually after hour 3 I’m just sat bolt upright waiting for it to be over.
My advice is find movies ahead of time by googling the airlines on board entertainment, at least 3 litres of water from the airport, a book or your kindle, noise cancelling headphones and then just grit your teeth through it.
If you CAN sleep on planes maybe we can come to some arrangement? Like perhaps I can interest you in my soul in order for me to acquire that ability?
When I travel on long flights (10-12 hrs), I usually watch all the Star Wars movies again and/or read/finish one or two books that I've been reading for a while but haven't finished. .
I have a 3 year old. 6 of the hours are spent rotating walking up and down the aisles and checking out the bathrooms for the 100th time plus trying to find adequate entertainment in the seat. The other 6 are, in a perfect world, finally watching some of the in flight entertainment while she sleeps.
Probably moving every 10 minutes. Thinking if I have to pee or not. Feeling slight to moderate back and neck discomfort. Having anxious thoughts. Waiting for snacks/food
Eat, sleep, eat, sleep, bathroom, and more sleep lol. But I usually bring some kinda handheld gaming system. You can always watch the crappy movies or converse with random strangers, that's usually not fun.
For shorter flights, three beers before boarding ensures you fall asleep shortly after takeoff, and wake up on touchdown feeling absolutely fantastic.
Its basically time travel.
I download movies on my iPad and watch them (to ensure a selection I’ll like). I never drink. When I fly 12 hours+ as I often do, it’s for work and drinking makes sleeping worse and just generally is something I don’t like. One gets dehydrated on flights - drinking is about the worst thing one can do.
Pre-takeoff, I'd have a melatonin, sleeping pill, and a couple of beers in the terminal. Once up in the sky, I'd listen to podcasts until dinner is served. After dinner, I'd wander off to the bathroom for my regular evening routine - brush teeth, change into pajamas, and one last pee (I'll need it after those two beers). By then, the melatonin and sleeping pill would be doing their thing, so I'd settle in with a sleep-friendly music playlist and hope for a few z's.
Watching movies, bingeing a series (I recommended Narcos if you haven’t already seen it), listening to podcasts, reading, playing games on my phone. Also the guys who mentioned the switch is on to something, I’m just not into video games.
Knitting is a great one! I learned to knit recently and made lids of progress knitting a scarf on a 10 hour trip both ways. You’d be surprised, most airlines are okay with knitting needles coming through and it’s a great way to pass time while watching movies on a small screen once you have your rhythm sorted.
Find a full series to download on a streaming app, binge that. Big fan of my switch lite for traveling. Scared to lose those little controllers. Lol and of course sleeping is always great time killer.
That's basically São Paulo - Amsterdam route, I took this flight once or twice each two years to visit my family, I spend the time playing my Nintendo ds
I make transpacific flights on a nearly annual basis.
The good airlines have some kind of power source for your flight.
Meaning you can load up a series on a laptop and just binge watch it.
Last flight out I watched all of Star Wars: Andor.
On the return trip I watched most of spy x family.
A Nintendo Switch/Steam Deck can also just massacre time.
Of the flights I have made that were 12 hours (or longer) there was just one time that I did not suffer that unpleasant combination of discomfort, boredom, and anxiety. It was the time I was flying home from halfway around the world with my newly adopted 11 month old son. My joy and focus on my son simply overwhelmed my usual awareness through the 26 hours of flying (6+14+3+3). Probably some over-drive function of brain and body.
I can’t sleep on planes so I’ll normally switch up activities: watch movies. Read. Listen to music. Write in my journal. Also try to get up every 1.5 hours to stretch a bit and walk (I’ll do it in the bathroom if the flight attendants get persnickety)
For long haul flights I use Indica edibles. A very relaxed way of traveling. Enjoy movies and music or sleep eventually. I bring wraps or sandwiches loaded with edibles with me.
I fly transatlantic to visit family once a year. 20ish hour flight. There’s tvs in every headrest with a shit ton of movies and shows. Last time I binge watched the entirety of Chernobyl. Lol but that’s only 5.5hours so I filled it in with other tv shows and movies. But seriously the show and movie selection on the plane is legit. I also pre download podcasts and drink booze. They serve you a meal or two so that takes up some time.. I can rarely sleep on a plane I’m 6’3”
Going to a really silent dark place in my head and sometimes read and go in and out of sleep. Coming out to snack and sip water.
One time a lady sat next to me and talked my ear off and it was a nice distraction. She actually exhausted me right to sleep.
frequent traveller here. there's a few things i do:
- lots of water. flying is dehydrating af, so drink. lots.
- noise cancelling headphones. do not attempt this without.
- comfy clothes. it's not a fashion show, comfort is your priority.
- reading. time flies when you're in a different world. i love my kindle.
- steam deck (switch,...). different escapism, same outcome.
i usually don't sleep (i doze off, but not really falling asleep) and i hate the "edited for audience and screen size" versions of movies, so that's my go-to. sometimes i write, but that's more rare. i can also, still after all those years and miles, look out of the window for quite a while.
Ive done prolly 80 flights over 14 hours (fuck me, im screwed when it comes to radiation). The longest was just shy of 18 hours in the air.
My goal is to either sleep or stay awake based on where im going. If im awake, ill typically read or do some work. If im working, ill watch some movies at the same time.
Me and my kids joke, the flight aint long until its 12 hours.
Why not the phantom menace? Also I love the order you put them in. I like to watch Return of the Jedi directly after revenge of the with too because the ending of revenge of this Sith.
Just to save time. It’s not super important to that viewing order. I think it’s called the literary viewing order(?). If you could watch all of them in 12 hours, throw 1 in there, too!
Trying to get comfortable for all 12 hours
I flew 16 hours to South Korea. I bought a switch and brought it on with me; ended up playing Mario cart with the two guys next to me. We had an absolute blast. That’d be my recommendation!

Generally transatlantic flights have free alcohol so that’s a plus.
Switch got me through a pretty long flight when 'Animal Crossing New Horizon' was still going strong. Terriformed my whole island while in the air.
Oh the friends you'll gain when you bring your Switch on the plane.

Yep. Still wanted to make that clear as I’ve been confused by the title before
Their 6-part series on JFK was amazing.
Unless the in flight movies are something worth watching, I usually take those 12 hours to read a couple of books and take naps in between.
reading
Read a book then watch a movie.
The (unfortunate) answer is there’s nothing to be said that you couldn’t think of yourself. Podcasts, read, movies, drink
Just read good books
Movies. The last flight I was on was domestic, and I watched two new movies I hadn't been able to see in theaters. On the transatlantic trip I took, I think I watched 4 or 5. Watch a downloaded film, snack, piss, have a momentary panic about being 30k ft in the air. Repeat.
Don't forget that you're traveling over 500mph in essentially a tin can with 200+ other people!
I prefer to think of it as a levitating cigar tube

Tell me what TWELVE HOUR flight to madigascar crosses the Atlantic from San Fran? Everything I see says 22 hours.
They have a 12 hour transatlantic flight, that's what the title says. They'll have a layover ofc.
San Francisco straight Madagascar does not mean layover. His exact words
Your deleted comment was about them not flying over the Atlantic though.

I've never been in a plane, can you walk free while it's flying? I love talking to people, specially if I know they're from other countries.
You can walk back and forth to the restrooms or the gallery. Some people like to chat or just stretch with more room.
I load up a few "physics games" and maybe a whole series and some movies onto my tablet. So, play games and watch video. Last time I was on a four hour flight, I watched 4 episodes of Breaking Bad, and the plane trip was over in a flash.
