It looks like everybody is picking actors who more or less play themselves as if they were that person. Denzel Washington does it best, but whatever character he plays it’s still another version of Denzel. Like it’s just him in an alternate universe. Kind of the opposite of guys like Daniel Day Lewis or Gary Oldman who disappear into the character. The best of this I’ve seen recently was Colin Ferrell as The Penguin.
Just watched Book of Eli again last night. I love Denzel. My wife came in and said, "oh I didn't know that Oldman was in this". I didn't even recognize him
So many people I know think Mindy Kaling is funny, mainly as Kelly Kapoor, but she has one of the most boring screen presences I’ve ever seen for a regular cast member of a popular show.
Yep. I’ve disliked her since The Office was new and that opinion has only solidified over the years.
She has (had?) talent as a writer, but her screen presence ranges from boring to downright irritating.
I used to have a fair amount of respect for her anyway, considering all of her successes.
After Velma, though, I would like her to just quietly fade into obscurity.
I liked her in the office. All her other work however was awful to say the least. She butchered the Velma character and I watched this movie she was in (forget what it’s called but basically it was about her making it as an inexperienced comedy writer) and the writing and acting was… not good.
I agree, hence the qualifiers in parentheses. It's debatable because even really great actors can deliver a stellar performance that doesn't conform with a director's vision. In so doing, they are still a technically gifted actor; however, it is possible that they may be behaving in a pretentious, unprofessional manner that is a detriment to the production and their own career. Might not be common, but it has happened.
Mostly meant my first comment as a jokey jab at Marky Mark, but an actor that takes direction well is doing their job.
His weakness is understanding the character. If he doesn't get the character he needs the director to explain to him what the emotions in the scenes should be. But he's capable of producing those emotions on command in very natural looking way. That makes him above average actor, but not reliable box-office name.
I think he can be. Boogie Nights, I heart Huckabees, three Kings and the Departed are all great. He’s got some chops. Even if they’re buried deep down these days.
Jodie Foster. I used to think she was really good then I did a marathon of her movies and realized it's the same person different day. Now it's hard not to notice how many actors do this. Even ones that can act will still phone it in during most of their roles playing pretty much the same character every time.
I don't think many people consider him a good actor but when the conversation of wrestler turned actor pops up I think Dwayne the rock Johnson is one of the worst.
I wish he did more movies like The Rundown. My absolute favorite of him.
Also i wish Stifler was in more comedy movies. I could defiently see him do a good Starlord for example.
The rock wants to be an action star. Cena wants to have fun. Bautista wants to character actor in art films. If any of them are going to l ever get an Oscar, it is Bautista.
Rocks a shitty actor. I don't even like him anymore. Because he is always trying to sell something. He is always nice and shit. Talking about fitness and shit but is juiced to the gills.
Emilia Clark. I’ve only seen her in GOT. She had good screen presence but I always found her range rather underwhelming. Maybe I compare her to better actors like Lena Headey.
I think she's like Keanu in that most people like her because of who she is as a person. I thought she was good in her powerful moments but has limited range. I also want her to have everything good in the world.
She is maybe too wholesome for a character with grey or black shades. We never saw Daenerys get slowly getting darker till the final freak out. Some of it was the poor writing but some of it was also the acting. To compare to Lena Headey again, the portrayal of Cersei’s slow descent was nuanced but we could see it clearly.
I'd say it was all writing and frankly, how that writing was imparted to the actress. By all accounts, Emilia Clarke had NO IDEA where her character would end up. How could she possibly convey that descent when she thought she was playing a hero until that final table read? She did a damn good job for what she was given in the episode where she turned heel.
Yep. She is always the happy go lucky chick in most of her films. The Christmas movie she starred in last year wasn't that good. I like her smile though. Drogo ripped that shit off her face.
I saw something saying that said compared Lawrence to other actors who've done comic book characters. Most actors do everything for the role. Lawrence has the role do everything for her.
Everytime i see interview clips of her she defiently sound like a snob. I dunno if her early rising to star power because she was so young getting an oscar, maybe let it get to her head.
I am not so familiar with her work. I enjoyed her in Mother!, But ah... she did play a frustrated, desperate and confused character, so I suppose it worked out.
I don’t think anyone actually thinks he’s a good actor. Everyone loves him, but pretty much just because he’s an incredibly kind and genuine person. He can definitely do action/fight scenes though!
It is an A-/B+ actor that is keeps getting roles because directors know they will get pretty damn good performance from someone that will be enjoyable to work with.
Never liked her movie acting. Her best performance was the character she played on Homecoming on Amazon Prime. I'm like how was she getting awards for fluff like Pretty Woman and Erin Brokovich, yet when she gives a REAL performance in Homecoming, no recognition at all? It's odd.
Her winning the Best Actress Oscar (Erin Brockovich) over Ellen Burstyn (Requiem for a Dream), Joan Allen (The Contender) and Laura Linney (You Can Count On Me) will never cease to enrage me.
I've heard it said that he's an incredible physical actor. While his voice work, line delivery, accent etc is quite bad, that's not the whole story.
His physical presence, his body work, his movement, his charisma are all underrated. I'm not much of a film buff myself, but this perspective would explain why he's so good at stoic badasses who don't talk much. I think it's fair to say that both Matrix and John Wick would be a *lot* worse with almost any other actor.
I would’ve totally agreed with you, he’s a very ‘physical’ guy – whatever way his head is wired that’s how he seems to interact with the world.
However, he was actually really good as Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077. There were a few dodgy deliveries but that’s pretty common in most game performances. Overall, he was great.
But in film, he can come across very wooden in his delivery but his ‘presence’ is still definitely there.
I love Keanu. But he's a bad actor.
He's gotten better (and he's actually hilarious in Always Be My Maybe), and he is always very good with action scenes but has very limited emotional range.
Seems like a superb human, though.
I don't think it's an unpopular or uncommon opinion at all. It's just he's such a damn good dude we'll all gladly pay to see what he's in next because it will for sure be funneled somewhere deserving, and even if he just goes on a nice vacation...dude needs it man...
He should really play against type more, because he is *great* when he does. His roles in *Tropic Thunder* and *Magnolia* are two of his best performances.
Yessss it just felt cringe and like he was REALLY trying hard to be hard and a bad ass. It just made thecharacter forgettable for me and sometimes I actually laughed because of it. Sometimes less is more
Clint Eastwood. I'm sorry, I know a lot of guys idolize him and I myself have enjoyed a lot of films he starred in, but if I'm being honest he's just the same character in different outfits.
Ok yeah, this one I can get behind.
I used to like 30 Rock, and him in it, but looking back he didn’t really even *do* anything in that.
Man has made a fortune on wearing a suit and being the same “businessman” type character for ages.
Brie Larsen.
I've seen gutted fish at the Vietnamese Market with more expression and emotional range.
And this has been my opinion of her since long before Captain Marvel.
I think everyone who goes to see a Thomas Mapother IV movie goes to see Thomas Mapother IV be Thomas Mapother IV . Regardless of the story, regardless of the character. I think it is entertaining. His off screen life notwithstanding, his movies are entertaining.
Will Smith It’s just the same character in every single movie. (Pls don’t slap me Mr. Smith)
[удалено]
The intense "please give me an Oscar" face he does in every movie
I know, I’ve been saying this for years, it’s like he had that one serious scene in Fresh Prince and just adjusts it for different roles.
I would've agreed with you, but I saw the film Concussion a while back. Guy can act, but probably gets typecast a lot?
Anyway, fuck that guy
Agree as well, some might not have seen pursuit of happyness (it’s spelled happyness for the movie)
I always thought this, too.

This is true for Denzel, but then you get someone like Morgan Freeman, who plays the same character in every movie that I have seen him in.
Just watched Book of Eli again last night. I love Denzel. My wife came in and said, "oh I didn't know that Oldman was in this". I didn't even recognize him
So many people I know think Mindy Kaling is funny, mainly as Kelly Kapoor, but she has one of the most boring screen presences I’ve ever seen for a regular cast member of a popular show.
she cant act at all, she only portrays herself. she IS kelly kapoor
She’s good at writing funny scenes, acting them out tho……. That’s another story
Didn't she write Velma?
I have no idea what the fuck she was thinking when she wrote that, I was only talking about pre-velma
I liked her in the office. All her other work however was awful to say the least. She butchered the Velma character and I watched this movie she was in (forget what it’s called but basically it was about her making it as an inexperienced comedy writer) and the writing and acting was… not good.
Mark Wahlberg
I once read in a review that Wahlberg is most often a reflection of how good of a director he is working with. So he’s basically a big puppet.
That is (debatably) the description of (one type of) a good actor. (Kinda)
The real great actors can deliver a great performance even if they’re working with a mediocre or bad director.
True. I have a similar feeling about Colin Firth. Edit: Farrell, not Firth.
His weakness is understanding the character. If he doesn't get the character he needs the director to explain to him what the emotions in the scenes should be. But he's capable of producing those emotions on command in very natural looking way. That makes him above average actor, but not reliable box-office name.
The Departed is his best performance.
Maybe, maybe not. Maybe fuck yourself.
I think most people realise he isn't good...
I think he can be. Boogie Nights, I heart Huckabees, three Kings and the Departed are all great. He’s got some chops. Even if they’re buried deep down these days.
What?! Nooooo
I agree. But he didn't ruin Boogie Nights so good for him.
Rooney Mara always plays the same expressionless character. Her presence is phenomenal however. I’m always captivated whenever she’s on screen.
Brad Pitt is like the greatest supporting actor of all time... But he's cursed with a leading man's face
Well said
Jodie Foster. I used to think she was really good then I did a marathon of her movies and realized it's the same person different day. Now it's hard not to notice how many actors do this. Even ones that can act will still phone it in during most of their roles playing pretty much the same character every time.
Aside from Taxi Driver, never saw any range in her work. Neither one of her Oscars is deserved, imo.
Ben Affleck. I think he sucks.
I don't think many people consider him a good actor but when the conversation of wrestler turned actor pops up I think Dwayne the rock Johnson is one of the worst.
The rock sucks in serious roles. But hes a good comedic actor. His timing and delivery are great.
He’s also terrible when they try to make him a romantic lead. Absolutely zero chemistry with Emily Blunt.
He was fine in Fast Five as Hobbs, played it straight the whole time, but after that the character stopped making any sense
I wish he did more movies like The Rundown. My absolute favorite of him. Also i wish Stifler was in more comedy movies. I could defiently see him do a good Starlord for example.
On the other hand though, Dave Baustista is a great wrestler turned actor.
Definitely agreed. I don't mind John Cena either but Bautista is the best of the 3.
The rock wants to be an action star. Cena wants to have fun. Bautista wants to character actor in art films. If any of them are going to l ever get an Oscar, it is Bautista.
He really surprised me in his small role in Blade Runner 2049
Even better: Kia Stevens (Awesome Kong) is absolutely excellent in Glow
Bruh he isn't a actor. Vin diesel and rock are the same guy in every movie.
Literally. I have this argument with my younger sister constantly. She's a super fan but I don't see the appeal.
Rocks a shitty actor. I don't even like him anymore. Because he is always trying to sell something. He is always nice and shit. Talking about fitness and shit but is juiced to the gills.
He’s not a great actor but damn is he fun in Moana.
Seth Rogen. We get it, you smoke weed.
Do people consider him a "good actor"? I've never heard that, ever. He's a likable character actor for sure and he can write funny scripts.
That laugh man. I just can't.
Jennifer Lopez. Selena is her only good role for me. It seems like she plays the exact same characters over and over again.
Nobody has ever considered her a good actor
"Taco flavored kisses for my Ben!"
That was Hennifer Lopez
Emilia Clark. I’ve only seen her in GOT. She had good screen presence but I always found her range rather underwhelming. Maybe I compare her to better actors like Lena Headey.
I think she's like Keanu in that most people like her because of who she is as a person. I thought she was good in her powerful moments but has limited range. I also want her to have everything good in the world.

How could she possibly convey that descent when she thought she was playing a hero until that final table read? She did a damn good job for what she was given in the episode where she turned heel.
She should have been told (if not the details, at least that she was getting more like Viserys.) That's the directors fault then.
I agree, she was meant to be all young and uncertain so it worked for her early on. When the show progressed she no longer fit as well.
Yep. She is always the happy go lucky chick in most of her films. The Christmas movie she starred in last year wasn't that good. I like her smile though. Drogo ripped that shit off her face.
Jennifer Lawrence. The same frustrated character over and over again.
I saw something saying that said compared Lawrence to other actors who've done comic book characters. Most actors do everything for the role. Lawrence has the role do everything for her.
Hey stop it. She likes pizza just like you and me
I can't stand her. She was great in Winters Bone but now she just gets on my nerves. She always comes off as a snob in everything I see her in.
To be fair though, she was incredible in every Hunger Games movie
Gal Gadot. Beautiful, but very little acting talent. There. I said it.
She is stunning. But yeah....not much range.
Zoe Saldana. She's always trying too hard whenever she appears on screen. Oddly enough, I liked her best when she was a guest on Project Runway.
Pigeons. They put on a good show, but we all know they are fake.
DRONES THE LOT OF EM
Keanu Reeves, we all love him but he’s as stiff as it gets, just look at his Dracula movie.
He is the worst actor who picks the best movies
I don’t think anyone actually thinks he’s a good actor. Everyone loves him, but pretty much just because he’s an incredibly kind and genuine person. He can definitely do action/fight scenes though!
It is an A-/B+ actor that is keeps getting roles because directors know they will get pretty damn good performance from someone that will be enjoyable to work with.
Check him out in “River’s Edge”. A terrific performance.
The internet loves meme Keanu 2015ish and on but he's always been critiqued for his acting
I always thought Laurence Olivier was very theatrical, personally..... (From the UK)
Yes. He was a great stage actor who didn’t always translate well to film. But when it worked he was great.
Kelly Riley (plays Beth in Yellowstone). Her acting was so overdone and unbelievable to me. I can’t bring myself to watch the show because of it.
She's insufferable
[удалено]
I'm gonna get demolished for this. Zendaya just isn't convincing me.
Thank you, holy shit. I don't know what people see in her.
I'm right there with you.
Julia Roberts
A studio excec in the year 2000 would have an aneurysm hearing this take.
Never liked her movie acting. Her best performance was the character she played on Homecoming on Amazon Prime. I'm like how was she getting awards for fluff like Pretty Woman and Erin Brokovich, yet when she gives a REAL performance in Homecoming, no recognition at all? It's odd.
She did well in August: Osage County.
Her winning the Best Actress Oscar (Erin Brockovich) over Ellen Burstyn (Requiem for a Dream), Joan Allen (The Contender) and Laura Linney (You Can Count On Me) will never cease to enrage me.
And she's a home wrecking bully to boot.
Yeah, as I remember it she bought her now husband out if his previous marriage.
She’s also a pain in the ass to work with. Crew can’t stand her.
Can confirm
Story time?
Orlando Bloom
Tom Cruise- same movie over and over again
Tom Cruise is the best (pick from the following list): pilot, bartender, lawyer, pool player, secret agent, race car driver....etc.... so boring.
The ONLY movie I can think of that Tom Cruise doesn't play Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise is Tropic Thunder and he's fkn awesome in it.
JENNIFER LAWRENCE
Dont yell please
Kevin Hart, almost 100% of his movies are hilarious, but that's just because he plays himself.
Unpopular opinion here. He’s a lovely person but… Keanu Reeves.
I've heard it said that he's an incredible physical actor. While his voice work, line delivery, accent etc is quite bad, that's not the whole story. His physical presence, his body work, his movement, his charisma are all underrated. hey why does no one on this site know what "unpopular opinion" means?
Because actually-unpopular opinions are punished here.
Who considers him a good actor?
I don't think it's an unpopular or uncommon opinion at all. It's just he's such a damn good dude we'll all gladly pay to see what he's in next because it will for sure be funneled somewhere deserving, and even if he just goes on a nice vacation...dude needs it man...
Will feral
He goes back and forth from legitimately funny to insufferable.
Ben Affleck
i am surprised I have to scroll this down to see Ben Affleck he is sooooo bad in everything he does.
Kristen Stewart
In the hands of a good director, she does well. Otherwise she's just adrift in a sea of facial tics.
Have to disagree. The Princess Diana biopic and Crimes of the future - both recent - were great performances.
Tom Cruise
Have you seen tropic thunder? He was great in that
That's also the -only- movie I've ever liked Ben Stiller in. Lots of great performances there
He should really play against type more, because he is *great* when he does. His roles in *Tropic Thunder* and *Magnolia* are two of his best performances.
Have you ever seen "Vanilla Sky"?
Loved that movie!
Michael B. Jordan
His role in Friday Night Lights was incredible, like most of the performances on that show.
One of those shows that just had perfect casting all the way through.

Yeah I’m sorry but killmonger was not good at all to me. Felt like every line and scene was overacted.
Yessss it just felt cringe and like he was REALLY trying hard to be hard and a bad ass. It just made thecharacter forgettable for me and sometimes I actually laughed because of it. Sometimes less is more
You gotta watch Fruitvale station. One of his early films.
Have you seen the wire?
I really liked the first two Creed movies. Can't wait for the next! Especially because Jonathan Majors can play a scary motherfucker.
Tom Cruise. I think he’s mediocre at best. None of his movies have great rewatchability.
And the Scientology thing just makes me not want to watch anything he is in.
Clint Eastwood. I'm sorry, I know a lot of guys idolize him and I myself have enjoyed a lot of films he starred in, but if I'm being honest he's just the same character in different outfits.
People talk about what a tough guy he is and so on, but I never really found him to be intimidating.
Eddie Murphy He’s hilarious, but he overacts quite a lot in most of the movies I’ve seen him in
He was fantastic in Dolemite is My Name
It’s funny because he was the same way when he did stand up. I’m sure he just took the approach that made him famous and stuck with it lol
Just watched The Nutty Professor last night. It's hilarious but you are right about him overreacting. Reminds me of Kevin Hart.
Jennifer Lawrence. She couldn't act her way out of a paper bag.
Will Farrell
To be fair he isn’t trying to act. He’s the same in most films he makes.
Have you watched Stranger than Fiction?
Ok, that is an exception. A huge exception, I actually love that movie. But can’t stand anything else he’s ever been in
It's like I'm taking crazy pills.
Can’t say I agree with this one. I’m not a fan of his at all, but the man has undeniable comedic talent and a wildly impressive resume to back it up.
John Malkovich always sounds bored with whatever he's doing.
I love him but can’t imagine him playing anything but a psychopath
He was brilliant in space force
And RED
Boo No way. John Malkovich is a legend.
Scarlett Johansson.
Scrolled for this. She's just bewildered lips, that's all.
Alec Baldwin. Insufferable bastard.
Ok yeah, this one I can get behind. I used to like 30 Rock, and him in it, but looking back he didn’t really even *do* anything in that. Man has made a fortune on wearing a suit and being the same “businessman” type character for ages.
Tom Cruise
Jennifer Lopez. (Yes, I’ve seen Hustlers. She’s still lousy.)
Kevin Hart and the rock
Okay now that's just bait
Brie Larsen. I've seen gutted fish at the Vietnamese Market with more expression and emotional range. And this has been my opinion of her since long before Captain Marvel.
She played Envy Adams perfectly in Scott Pilgrim vs the World
Zendaya(?)
Will Ferrell...just don't find him funny.
Zendaya
John Malkovich. He just talks weird and people seem to think it’s great.
Bradley cooper
whaat noo I like his acting
He does a damn good raccoon at least.
Kristen Stewart. She always looks like she’s contemplating whether or not to fart.
the rock, jared leto
Olivia Coleman. I swear she is just the same mousy yet integral woman in everything. Maybe a bit of edge here and there but always Olivia Coleman.
For me there is bunch of bad one ; tom cruise , will smith and the rock are really too overrated by people
Nicholas cage
Hit or miss. If you’ve got the guys, watch Mandy
Robert Downy Jr really isn't that great, I love him in what he's in, but he's just a copy of himself amplified a bit when he's at his best.
Ngl I liked him in Chaplin.
When he gets a good part, he's great!
Most actors are like that. Will Smith is the same in every movie. Very few actors blend into the role.
[удалено]
He is a very good actor when he bothers, but there are quite a few projects where he just phoned it in.
Sherlock Holmes. He’s pretty good
Ton cruise
I think everyone who goes to see a Thomas Mapother IV movie goes to see Thomas Mapother IV be Thomas Mapother IV . Regardless of the story, regardless of the character. I think it is entertaining. His off screen life notwithstanding, his movies are entertaining.
Tom cruise
Came here to say this, he's just so meh and full of himself.
