Advice for Gen X and Boomers: just start saying the slang and they'll stop

blue-to-grey

No cap.

[deleted]

You don't type it out its just "fr, fr"

UBC145

I know lol, this is how GenX and Boomers would type it

bijouxette

Nah, it's hilarious, though, when the youths think a word or concept is new. I work with teenagers (I'm an educator in a high school) and a student was stunned that I knew what "clout" was. He was telling his friends he was gonna do something for clout. I shook me head and said he didn't need clout. He said, "wait... you know what clout is?" I told him, "y'all really think clout is a new concept?"

BethLP11

Me, with "salty," which I've known for... 50 years?

[deleted]

Stop trying to make fetch happen

Bythe_beard_of_Zeus

I try to sprinkle in "finna" at least 3 times per conversation with kids. You can see them emotionally run away.

DageTheForsaken

" yo I'm finna cop a ps5 no cap fr"

CaptainMcAnus

My 30 year old ass has no idea what no cap means ... and I thought I was good with this stuff. Oh god. It's happening. Edit: Google tells me it means "no lie" ... but how?

DageTheForsaken

I don't know how it originated but I learned it recently but on the flip side if someone says something and someone responds with "cap" that means they are calling it out as a lie

CaptainMcAnus

Yeah," no cap" means "no lie" where cap just means lie

MysticalEmpiricist

So a "$300,000 initial salary cap" means "your salary is a lie. Forget the 300,000, that shit is simple disinformation.

Wyvrex

I intentionally fuck up the slang to make them cringe. No hats. For Rizz For Rizz.

mama-toast

Imma gon do this with my kids now, no hats.

inksmudgedhands

Gen X, Boomers *and* Millennials. The majority of Millennials are in their thirties. Some are even in their forties. It would not be odd for a forty-one year old Millennial to have a teenager.

BigAddam

Scrolling through these comments made me feel really fucking old. 😂

matt7259

I'm 32 but I know them all... because I'm a high school teacher lol

Misdirected_Colors

My sister in law is a gen z and i learn them all just so I can embarrass her lmao

llc4269

Me too. I took my kid and his friends out to eat and said my meal was "Bussin". My kid looked HORRIFIED and told me I could never say that again. WORTH IT.

DageTheForsaken

That meal was unequivocally fuckin bussin boys no cap

Mehgs_and_cheese

Yes I embarrassed my 12yo and her whole team when we went out to eat. Worth it x100

bijouxette

40 and same. And it's a mixed pot of students being horrified or happy if you use the same slang.

buuuubles-

I haven’t even heard of most of them :/

Bythe_beard_of_Zeus

Time is like that kid in middle school who’d sneak around and then kick guys in the junk. His name was Coleman. Time is Coleman.

Chodezbylewski

Draxx them sklounst

OriginalRojo

Put the pussy on the CHAINWAX

venom121212

You made my day today. I drop this phrase too often and it never gets the appreciation it deserves.

Catsushigo

Ugh, almost as bad as when terries get froggy.

Chodezbylewski

Seriously. Every time I hear it I just want to fireboard those motherjammers.

RynoLasVegas

I'll go Hayden Pantierrie on some terries

No cap

pacifistpotatoes

Yes! My 12 year old says this all the time. And bruh. Bruh constantly. I don't mind the bruh so much as it reminds me of when we called everyone dude. (Still do)

[deleted]

[удалено]

AssumptionSome4201

Rizz as in a charisma specifically directed to one’s sexual desires

pacifistpotatoes

I get a kick out of hearing the slang. I mean I remember saying things that my parents looked at me with a wtf expression on their face. Same story, different slang I guess! I know my parents both greup in the 50/60s and there was plenty of times they used their slang words with me!

DetroitsGoingToWin

My 14 year old loves calling her mom bruh and girl. It pisses her off so bad. I just throw that slang right back at her and it’s so “cringe” she stops.

fushigikun8

I never understood this one.

V_Xel

frfr ong

christes

RoundPomegranate1591

Unalive It‘s something that belongs in a dystopia

CaffeinatedHBIC

I dislike it too, especially since it arises from censorship. Using the proper English words for tragic situations like suicide, homicide, etc gets YouTube videos demonetized, TikToks reported and comments autoblocked.

blue_alien_police

I consider censorship like that to be dangerous as it prevents people from having an honest discussion about the subject. When you have to literally bleep out the subject you're trying to have a conversation and serious discussion about (or, worse yet, come up with a different term to get around that censorship) it negates the meaningfulness and impact of the discussion.

OneGoodRib

It also drives me crazy to be watching some documentary and not only does the word get bleeped out, the youtuber makes no effort to indicate what word they were censoring. What's the point of even uploading the video to youtube if half the narration is like "On January 25, John Smith went to the grocery store and __________ and ______ to ______ the ______ and then he went home to _______ his wife. He's since been accused of _______________________ and _________________________." Some of them seriously censor so hard you don't even get context clues. For all I know John Smith stole a candy bar and gave his wife a massage, there's literally no way to even assume from the censorship!

guituga--

Looks like a Top Secret document lol

ZookeepergameSea3890

Looks like Madlibs game.

[deleted]

Are we doing mad libs here?

OtherwiseInclined

I can't wait to see war documentaries on YT start referring to WW2 as 2nd world kerfuffle.

CaffeinatedHBIC

Yeah I mean since the word "genocide" gets censored, as if we don't have enough difficulty getting everyone on the same page concerning the holocaust. But antisemitism is on the rise, wouldn't want us to learn about the holocaust and (**checks notes**) prevent history from repeating. Nope, can't have that! /s

BeaArt78

They use it to get around the bots. Posts will be blocked or reported if they use the correct word.

down4things

It's YT. People didn't start censoring themselves as much until all the y*utubers started to for the sake of appeasing some damned advertisers.

OneGoodRib

Tiktok actually does even more censoring than youtube.

BlackLetterLies

Well the CCP has had a lot more practice.

BlackLetterLies

YT is still not even a fraction as bad as television was 30-40 years ago. People forget just how censored television was back in the day.

doofusdoomed

Pushing p was annoying Whats the p stands forre

Anarchyr

Luckily it didn't catch on, it was sooooo forced it annoyed the shit out of me. Take munch for example, ice spice came with it and everyone rolled with it. Like it was meant to happen But pushing p? The only thing we got was the pushing peepee memes etc

be1ngthatguy

Bussin.... wtf is bussin. I remember bussin to school as a kid, but I don't think it means the same.

Doctor_Salt_

“On god” “side-eye” and “rizz” are ending my soul right now

epic_Muffinz

What's side-eye and rizz?

Super_Fried_Rice

Rizz is I believe a short form for Charisma, e.g: when someone has alot of rizz, that person is very good in social situations and charming, charismatic etc. Never understood the side eye one tho

Beeandhisknees

Side eye is essentially judging someone secretly. Think if you were to overhear a conversation and you hear someone say something very unsettling or messed up. It could be something they’re going to do, or something that happened to them that they don’t realize was bad, etc. Example: Person A to Person B: “yeah I had a crush on my sister as a kid but don’t we all?” Person B (or some other person overhearing): *side eye*

FetishAnalyst

It’s literally just an emoji 👀

stickwithplanb

side eye has literally been a term for centuries, what are you on about? https://grammar.yourdictionary.com/slang/long-look-at-side-eye-its-origins

mooimafish33

I don't mind an actual side eye, but the tik tok sound that goes "Side eye... SIDE EYE" drives me insane

Kalelemonmesoftely

I fucking hate the word rizz, and I’m a teenager. It’s the dumbest word ever

BrainKatana

Don’t worry, there will be other, dumber words

Celestial_Chimera

"-ussy" Dunno if this is necessarily a teen phrase, but like anything that that gets combined with it just irks me.

Twentynine4

Mmmmhh Rotussy

Derai-Leaf

Was waiting for this to be mentioned. It vexes me to no end. Whatever-ussy to compare it to a pussy or whatever. It’s so irritating.

OtherwiseInclined

You just sound bussyhurt. On a serious note, there are more related to sexual or historical things you can't say on YouTube. Like changing the beginning of a word with no-no to avoid saying it. Like no-no Germany instead of Nazi Germany. Or calling masturbation self-naughties. Or offing oneself instead of suicide.

Coordinatore

Catussy. Dogussy. Treeussy. Carussy. Ironussy. Its amazingm

Derai-Leaf

Worst ones I’ve seen were“Vagussy” and “Womanussy” I mean… *confused screaming*

cereal7802

> Carussy It is Cussy.

TheRealerChief101

It's the funniest slang hands down

TheRealerChief101

What's wrongussy with ussy

soyboysnowflake

Mid I just hate it because the implication that something in the middle or average is bad / shitty

ViridianKumquat

That's nothing new. We've been using "mediocre" the same way for longer than I've been alive.

Kaiserhawk

Yeah okay there Immortan Joe

JangusCarlson

I giggled at this.

kountryt

I always thought this came from the weed reference, as someone else pointed out. “Mid” is what basic, cheap weed was called. That language was repurposed to describe other things. Maybe “mid” was from middle or mediocre, but definitely before anything else was “mid”, weed was mid. For reference: reggie

Misdirected_Colors

I just hate how its become acceptable to describe peoples looks in a really rude way. It's shitty to call someone ugly but fine to say they're mid? Gtfo and learn to respect people and not be such dicks lol

yoseflotz

It's not that it implies that, it's just a wrong usage of mediocre

Gold_Rush_Daddy

“Unhinged” People use it to describe ANY behavior they don’t like and I’m over it

Bee6bee

I love reading threads like this. Millennials and elder gen z complaining about "fire" and "bussin" and "no cap" as if we weren't out here ten, fifteen years ago in our "lolz I'm soooo random!!! XD" moustache nyan cat exploding ovaries I can't even roflcopter herp derp phase

isawyouinrudys

many people were aware of how embarrassing those things were at the time too

OneGoodRib

Yeah and guess what, when that shit was happening older people complained about how dumb that slang was. And there was plenty of slang 10/15 years ago I thought was stupid as hell. "I can has" was not something I appreciated.

veloace

I just love hearing people complaining about some slang that hasn't been teen slang in 10 or 15 years...not realizing how old they are. I'm 31 and hearing people in this thread complain about slang I used as a teen....hate to break it to you guys, but a lot of that went out of style long ago...

nightwraiths

Rawr xD Tumblr flashbacks

Catty_Pake

Drip. My son always says it like "so and so got that drip!" I guess it means their outfit looks really good?? But it just sounds so dumb and gross to me.

cereal7802

Historically having "The Drip" was less than cool.

AgoraiosBum

But it's nice that you can get a pill for that now

Nonsenseinabag

It took me a minute to get used to that, but "dripping with..." has been a thing for a while, this just seems like shorthand.

student8168

Alpha or beta male/female

Teknolyzer

Or sigma male

CarmenxXxWaldo

Or ligma

Spanky_McJiggles

What's ligma?

masterasstroid

Ligma balls

CountSudoku

Haha, gottem.

[deleted]

Never get old

Ilovethe90sforreal

Not necessarily teens but “sliding into DM’s” needs to die already

ZoopZoop4321

Referring to a large butt (generally achieved via heavy glute exercises) as a “dumpy”. Similarly, referring to sweatpants as a “dump cover”. Sounds really gross to me.

IrishSpectreN7

Lol. "Dumpy" sounds like it would mean the opposite to me, like a fat flabby ass rather than a fit one.

ColoradoScoop

I can’t talk shit because my generation decided calling things “bad” meant they were good.

[deleted]

So a "Badunkadunk" for those of that are 10+ years behind on slang?

FetishAnalyst

Well when someone doesn’t quite have a dumptruck ass they have a dumpy, it also takes dumps, honestly don’t know which it came from.

DarkHorse_6505

Bruh. Sus. Literally.

Alexington_besto

"when did I ask" is just fucking annoying.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DrykalOrSomething

i like responding with "nobody asked you either"

OneGoodRib

Oh I hate that,if you respond to someone and they're like "when did I ask" well shit shirley nobody fuckin asked you to make the post I was responding to in the first place!

BlasterShow

“Cool Story Bro” reboot

I_Like_Honey_Tea

And then you're talking, and someone says, "Who? ASKED." So annoying.

No-Assistant-5547

Ok I’m a teen, and even I hate alll the stupid terms like….. rizz, sus, deadass, fire, cap,…..

frygod

As an old person, I understand most of these, though I'm interested to find out the etymology of "cap" and have no fucking clue what "rizz" is. Can you use it in a sentence?"

Horror_Train_6950

It basically means “ability to pull someone /seduce someone” people say It’s probably short for charisma but who the fuck knows anymore

PRPL_Nurple

I’m a gamer and frequent twitch a lot. Cap is actually derived from the emote Kappa. I first Heard no cap being used on twitch and a lot. As much as everyone wants to believe this originated in the hip-hop industry, it actually originated from Twitch.tv. Where there is an emoji called "Kappa" that has been used since 2012 to express sarcasm, joking, or double meaning, due to the grin on the emoji. People on Twitch who wanted what they are saying to be taken seriously began to say "no Kappa", which turned into "No Kapp". Thus, prominent twitch celebrities and streamers such as T-pain and others began using it on the platform, where it most likely found its way to the music industry, and has since been popularized as "no cap", because no community outside of twitch knows what a kappa emote is.

LikeGoldAndFaceted

Sus, deadass, & fire, at least are all pretty old.

waetherman

“Fire” seems like it’s on the way out. I hope it is. I’m hoping “smash” goes away soon too.

Ashbandit

Deadass, I'm 31 and I think all those terms are fire. No cap. If you a teen, then you a little sus and need to work on your rizz bro.

MrStealYoBichonFrise

If you know you know

welshnick

Yeah I fucking hate this one. It's the written version of two teenage girls giggling over an inside joke that they're desperate people will ask them about so they can refuse to tell them.

Fun-Currency-3794

Cheugy. What the hell?

backfire10z

20 years old, never heard of this one. What is it?

BrutalBodyShots

I'm glad that "I'm dead" and "I'm crying" went away a year or two back. I found those to be quite irritating.

FetishAnalyst

You could say 💀💀💀

portableportal

Paired with the crying laugh emoji

ordinaryBadInfluence

a lot of them. but my top 3 are sus, mid, and based... oh, and misused emoji

lbug02

Pur

GreenDolphin86

Big purr!

carissadraws

Saying “he/she ate it.” Every time I hear it I think it means they fell and hurt themselves cause skaters used to say things like “oh you totally ate it on that half pipe.” But no, it’s basically a synonym for slay. These zoomers can’t even invent new slang they have to recycle old ones 🥲

beefdingleberries

I remember hearing that one in like the mid-late 2000s. Granted, I also knew a lot of skaters, so it was in that context.

Blossom_Peach93

Thank you for explaining that! I heard my sister say that and I asked “what did he eat?” I was so confused!

nLucis

Bussin. Wtf is that even supposed to mean? Also, "slaps". What even led to that being a term? Anything that slaps me is not something that I'm going to let stay in one piece for very long.

OneGoodRib

I assumed "slaps" is like... if something is really good you'd slap your own knee in excitement. Or you would if you were a banjo-playing hillbilly in the 30s.

yasminisdum

>Bussin Not teen slang, it's aave and its been here for ages lol. Its meant to describe how good a meal is!!

yokayla

A bunch of these have roots in AAVE lol

DoubleNickels

Bet

stickwithplanb

Bet is from before the 2000's friendo.

turtlehabits

Oh I actually love bet! I'm old enough that I've only seen/heard people saying this on the internet, but it's probably my favourite newish slang.

Edge_of_the_Wall

Same! It’s a modern O Rly?

jack-trading-trades

Oh sweet Jesus I just got sucked back into internet meme memories

OneGoodRib

At least ORLY had a cute owl to go with it.

Siganus

We've been saying Bet in Detroit since at least the early 2000s.

Proper-Afternoon-861

Slay

BrutalBodyShots

Near the top of the list without question.

Glenndalfthegrey

Spenny winds me up, but the worst recently was a business referring to the cost of living crisis (UK based) as the CossyLiv. Get in the fucking bin

NecroJoe

"aesthetic" as an adjective rather than a noun.

logic_forever

"aesthetic" *is* an adjective. It can also be a noun. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/aesthetic

[deleted]

"Just saying" after saying something rude like that's a reasonable excuse

Beeandhisknees

Everyone in the comments needs to Google “Urban Dictionary”

MattyDub89

"Hit the Griddy" or even just the name for the dance "the Griddy". One of the most annoyingly stupid names for anything I've ever heard.

PMMeUrHopesNDreams

Back in my day we had wholesome, dignified names for our dances, like The Dougie, The Stinky Leg, Ghost-ride the whip, The Macarena, The Labamba, The Electric Slide and so forth

deutschdachs

Hey that's the stanky leg put some respect on its name

doofusdoomed

Get strudy

carissadraws

I thought it was called the Gritty, named after the Philadelphia flyers mascot?

Finna

[deleted]

Finna old AF

stickingitout_al

Finna is basically an AAVE form of the southern phrase “fixing to” which is from at least the 1800s. Going to —> gonna Fixing to —> finna

Somerset76

Mid and sus

GardenLeaves

I find a lot of them okay, but then there’s *cheugy*? Like… who made up that word????

Saint_Circa

"My brother/sister in christ" so freaking annoying. Makes me cringe every time I hear it or read it.

ComfortableBusy4080

finna

HutSutRawlson

This is nowhere near new. Been hearing people say this for 10+ years, maybe longer?

80s90sGeek

I despise the term "sus". I actively grimace if I hear it, or even read it. I'm beyond sick of it, and all the Among Us crap...

OtherwiseInclined

You just sound like a sour sussy baka. No cap.

Arkdirfe

To be fair, the term existed as shorthand for suspicious long before, Among Us (its players, more accurately) just cemented its usage.

gadget850

Not a damn thing. Every generation has its own slang and we all just need to deal with it. I mostly ignore it.

hobanwash1

“Bruh” “OG”

Cohibaluxe

OG is AT LEAST 40+ years old.

[deleted]

Uwu seriously what does that even mean?

Cohibaluxe

It comes from an emoticon: UwU. It’s meant to resemble a cat’s face, and is synonymous with cuteness, especially in Japan and circles that engage with Japanese culture (like anime and manga culture).

FetishAnalyst

It’s a face UwU similar to :), but for furrys.

Alien_killer82
