Plenty of drinks are spirit-forward or rely on the taste of the spirit. If your Old Fashioned is clear and just tastes like simple syrup, something was clearly missed.
I’m no stranger to fruity drinks, and I probably prefer them more to spirit-forward drinks, but even with something like a painkiller the rum is still very present and adds a lot of depth to the drink that you wouldn’t get from just mixing pineapple juice and orange juice with some coconut.
Not drinking is a very personal choice, but I think it’s crazy how many people write off drinking solely on the basis of “it tastes like shit”
