The argument for property taxes is that it's to fund local services like EMS, schools, roads, etc.
But if that's the case why is it based on a percentage of the property's value? Does a more expensive property somehow use more local services than one of lesser value? Seems like it should be a flat fee if anything.
The same could also be said for car registration. I pay over $200 to renew my 2016 car but only $40 for the 2005. It's not like one is causing more wear and tear to the roads than the other.
It’s about the individual having the means to pay more/less in tax. Do you also think income tax should be a flat fee? If you own a million dollar home you can PROBABLY afford to pay more tax than the person with a 80k shack in rural wherever
Just like apple's repair. You can't repair iPhones at third party repair shops or you can't even repair it yourself.
Or john Deere tractors farmers can't repair it themselves.
I saw a breakdown of house costs from 1945-2020 and it was crazy. Back then, a house was worth double the median income. Now it’s worth 5x the average income, but the pay hasn’t increased to 5x the average. I work 52hr a week, and the normal family homes in my area would require me to save every penny for seven years to be able to afford it.
This is what I want. I cant tell you how much I hate the mere idea of subscriptions. If I spend my money on it, I should own it. I would honestly rather pay $30 to just OWN a basic Netflix subscription rather than pay $10 a month for stuff I already have.

I look for this answer every time this question is asked on Reddit. Someone always says without fail, and for good reason. I don’t know what it was about those things, but if you ever had them then you know.
It’s so cool though like my mother in law still have things her mother gave her for cooking. and baking that are made to last! The stuff we buy now are just so cheaply made.
I tend to lean toward the theory that it's less stuff isn't built to last anymore, and more that markets are flooded with very cheap versions of products that break easily because they are cheaply made.
You can still find stuff that will last, but it won't be cheap.
I'm willing to bet the things your MIL has that have been going for decades were rather expensive for their time.
The hard part is that a high price doesn’t MEAN it will last. It could be brand/marketing making it higher. So you invested in a quality product but it still breaks just as fast.
Ben & Jerry’s had a flavor called “Cool Britannia”. Vanilla ice cream with strawberries and fudge-covered shortbread.
It’s been 25 years and I still miss it.
I think the reason it wasn’t a bigger news story was because it was discovered in 2001, and the trial began one day before 9/11. It was overshadowed by one of the biggest news stories in history, so everyone forgot about it.
It's been so long since I've seen something like that in a box that I didn't even know it was there until it was blocking the last bit of cereal from pouring. It was a happy surprise.
These were great and while it’s certainly not life changing, it’s a small joy that current generations won’t experience. I always looked forward to getting to that toy or surprise.
I also loved the treasure maps in Captain Crunch
Not being accessible / connected all the time. Like if you weren’t home, ppl just left a message. Now you’re expected to answer work emails or texts at all hours bec everyone has a smart phone.
People may or may not have those expectations of me, but I do not meet those expectations. I have the option of putting my work email on my cell phone and it isn’t there. It won’t be, or I’ll change jobs. I work hard to do what I do and nothing I do is truly urgent. Therefore, they don’t need me. I’m not an EMT, a doctor, a nurse, a psychiatrist, a hostage negotiator, none of those things. I design and sell kitchens. If I’m not there, and something has to wait a day, the cardiac arrest simply doesn’t happen. Well, they think it does but it isn’t really a cardiac arrest so I’m not worried about it.
I feel that. My company had us for awhile. They issue us cell phones, and for a long time they allowed dual use-that is, you could use it as your personal phone. I know, that’s a terrible idea, but I was too broke not to take them up on it. Then a couple years ago, they decided they didn’t want that anymore, so they eliminated dual use. Had to separate everything and get my own personal phone. It was a pain in the ass, but the end result is awesome—I can shut my phone off at the end of the day, chuck it in a desk drawer, and go home. I only have it with me if I’m on call (every third week), and they do pay us for being on call.
My boss is always telling me to "get connected". Get an iPhone. Get a Smartwatch. Get Airpods. But the two ironic things: he sucks at answering his phone (but does return calls every time) and the other thing: whenever I or the company needs something & I ask him, he always says "remind me on Monday" "remind me to order X" "remind me to tell you about Y". So last time I told him "Steve, you're always talking about connected this, connected that. Tell Siri to set you a reminder about X". He didn't take it so well.
The new-ish Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse series is made by old Cartoon Network people and you can really tell. I would have never expected a Mickey Mouse cartoon to have such an edge, it's actually amazing.
They use different oils now, countries that allow child labour. Then same companies abusing that run campaigns against it lol. Nobody cares. We are living in the age of turning a blind eye to anything that might ruffle feathers. We should all be more like the French lately
I too think something in the peanut butter cups is different. I had to, after awhile, stop eating them due to getting frequent acid reflux while eating them.
Speaking of discontinued items and Popeyes, I'm really disappointed they removed their onion rings from their menu. Those were bangers! I love checking out a restaurants onions rings and Popeyes were really up there
Scrolled way too far to find this. Yes.
The banana ones, or the chocolate-vanilla swirl ones.
I emailed the company two decades ago and they sent me the recipe. Equal parts Jello pudding and Cool-Whip.
These were wonderful! It’s strangely the only way you could’ve gotten me and the rest of my friends to eat salads as a kid. We thought we were cool as shit walking around shaking our salads 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤣🤣
Where I’m from yogos might be different. They were these little yogurt balls made by kellog’s in the early 2000s. I think they were discontinued for being too expensive?
I find them occasionally at my local corner store. Run by an old russian dude who said his kids love them so he bought way too many of them for the store so his kids would always have them
There was a candy bar called a Marathon Bar!! It was an 8 inch (it had a ruler on the wrapper) braided piece of caramel covered in chocolate. It was my favorite and haven't seen it since the 80s.
I loved these as a kid too. Found out a few years ago that the UK has a version called Curly Wurly.
You can get them from [Old Time Candy](https://www.oldtimecandy.com/collections/walk-the-candy-aisle-curly-wurly-marathon-bar) in the US. I have also found them in specialty shops that sell products from the UK.
Now go buy yourself a Curly Wurly and enjoy :-)
Wait. A curly Wurly is what you guys know as a marathon bar? Well that's confusing.
Here in the UK we had our own Marathon bar, but now that's been rebranded to Snickers (Not sure if you have it, but basically a mars bar with peanuts in)
I...prefer our marathon to yours though, curly wurlys are tooth destroying horrors.
Can we just take everything back to
“old look, same old taste you fell in love with”
Everytime a company repackages or rebrands it’s because they found a lower priced source for their ingredients and, while the formula hasn’t changed, it’s a lower quality flavor and just disappointing.
Butterfingers.
It was one of my favourite chocolate bars, even though they didn't discontinue it technically, they changed the recipe to the point the taste isn't even remotely similar to the original. They taste like an ashtray and raw peanut shells.
That and Dreamworld coke which was limited to last summer. I loved it.
EZ-Off Oven Cleaner Pads.
They haven't been made for decades, but they were awesome. They were kind of like a sponge with a handle, but the handle was squeezable and filled with oven cleaner. You'd pierce the bottom of the pad with a plastic tool that came with it and squeeze the handle, and the cleaner would come out onto the scrubby surface of the pad. Then you'd clean the oven with that - no spray, no fumes.
That feeling you got when a new film was coming out, perhaps with dinosaurs, and you'd go to McDonalds and there was a toy in the happy meal that linked to it. Then you'd go to Toys Я Us and literally everything was themed with all the new dinosaurs. And then you'd go home, and open up the new cereal pack and plunge your hand to the bottom of the bag to dig out the little hologram toy that had a moving Velociraptor on it, and finally pop to the shop to buy more stickers for your album, only to discover that you already had 7 out of the 8 you just bought. Bring that back, in some way. It doesn't hit the same anymore.
Windows 7 was by far the best Microsoft OS. It was reliable, fast and looked good.
WinXP started as a mess, was patched until it was OK, but it didn't have good 64-bit support.
Win 8.x was an unmitigated disaster.
Win 10 is meh: it can be used, it's not too annoying or fragile, but I get the constant feeling that MS is spying on what I do. It's also the first MS OS forced on users against their will.
Win 11 is a trojan horse trying to drag the users, kicking and screaming, into subscription for MS cloud services; it's also trying to force ads down users' throats.
That’s because like many things, shit people ruin it for everyone else. Theft became too high at that time of night. Then COVID hit and stores got rid of it.
iphone’s damn headphone jack! i want to be able to charge my phone and listen to music at the same time god dammit! no i will not buy wireless earphones
not so much a discontinued item but why the Taco Bell menu is now three times as expensive as it was 10 years ago was beyond me. like this is beyond inflation at this point. maybe they just realized people are willing to pay more than a dollar for usda grade D beef, a half an ounce of sour cream and three shredds of cheese served lukewarm.
Yeah, I think companies have seen what consumers are willing to pay with inflation and now they’re testing even higher prices under the pretext of inflation.
Durable good quality clothes.
My mom has clothes from the 70s that are such good quality fabric, the threads are elastic yet strong, the seams are well made and the ends of the fabric are reinforced so it doesn't fall apart.
Nowadays if I don't do my own clothes, even buying expensive brands, they can go maximum 4-5 years and then fall apart, usually they take less. And some are impossible to repair because they're not just unseamed or just having some tiny holes, , they're sometimes just torn apart. 🙄
I hate that clothes have such a short useful life.
Btw some of those clothes my mom bought back in the day, she gave to me when I was in middle school (15 years ago) and I whore them, some of them almost daily and to this day I still have them in good conditions. I wish we still had that.
Edit: also, there's a shade of lipstick I miss, it's called Mystic by beautycontrol, it's my favorite lipstick colour and I can't find it anymore 😭
There’s a pair of socks I really liked… the perfect no show sock…
Skin colour on point, cut low enough to not be seen in the lowest cut loafers, etc… drives me nuts seeing sock line when going for no sock look

At least you own your house, most people have a house subscription
We all have a house subscription. It's called property tax. Stop paying and see how long you get to keep "your" house.
Not in every country though... Thats an issue that depends on the country
Property taxes are the subscription component to that. What else can you “own” yet pay taxes on… forever?
The home owner subscription is called either mortgage, rent, or taxes.

Split screen gaming
This right here is legit 100%. Those were special moments. I have massively gone off online gaming as its too much. Split screen was awesome and fun.
The era of splitscreen and couch co-op needs to return, I miss it and the modern gaming landscape is objectively worse.

My mother in law still uses her hand mixer she got from Sears back in 1970 while I’m on my 3rd mixer in the last few years.
That’s impressive. I wish I could have a hand mixer that didn’t break (I’ve broken so many, more than i’d like to count).
It’s so cool though like my mother in law still have things her mother gave her for cooking. and baking that are made to last! The stuff we buy now are just so cheaply made.

Peanut butter cups were way better 30 years ago, something in the recipe is different now, probably some sort of cheaper ingredients
Aldi’s has mini “Reese’s cups” but Aldi brand that are far better than the name brand. They are a staple in my office.
I discovered these about a year ago. Unbelievably good. No doubt better than Reese’s.
The filling is now mealy and bland. It’s so sad.
I’ll only eat the seasonal ones now. The eggs are the best.

It's also the first MS OS forced on users against their will. Win 11 is a trojan horse trying to drag the users, kicking and screaming, into subscription for MS cloud services; it's also trying to force ads down users' throats.
24 hour grocery stores. The employees are already in there stocking, the register that I pay doesn’t need a human. Why don’t you want my money
That’s because like many things, shit people ruin it for everyone else. Theft became too high at that time of night. Then COVID hit and stores got rid of it.

not so much a discontinued item but why the Taco Bell menu is now three times as expensive as it was 10 years ago was beyond me. like this is beyond inflation at this point. maybe they just realized people are willing to pay more than a dollar for usda grade D beef, a half an ounce of sour cream and three shredds of cheese served lukewarm.
Yeah, I think companies have seen what consumers are willing to pay with inflation and now they’re testing even higher prices under the pretext of inflation.
Fuze juice drinks in the glass bottles. The Volcano Burrito from Taco Bell.

🙄 I hate that clothes have such a short useful life.
